A young couple say they are on track to make their first million - after launching a sweets business from their dining room.
Charlie Wells, 23, and Georgia Conlan, 25, founded Sweets and Sour during Covid.
They started off slowly but their popularity exploded after posting videos on TikTok - and they turned over £750k from 2021 to 2022.
And from 2022 to 2023 they turned over a stunning £895k - and the pair from Egham, Surrey, are forecasting 2024 to be their first million-pound year, they say.
They sell imported and exotic items from around the world - with bestsellers including cake mix and bagel seasoning from the US.
Charlie said: "We've just turned over £895k and now we're aiming for our first million.
“Our best sellers are usually the limited-edition new releases - we sell a lot of Lays, Cheetos, and American cereals as well as energy drinks like American Monster.
“We sell American groceries like bagel seasoning, pancake mix, Betty Crocker cake mixes, stove top stuffing mixes – they taste completely different from the products in the UK.
“One of my favourite products ever is Starburst swirlers – they're insane.
“Georgia’s is the new KitKat lemon crisp – it’s a limited-edition creamy KitKat with a lemon filling.
“We’re really proud of ourselves and our team for getting it as far as we’ve got in such a short time.”
Georgia and Charlie started their sweets business after Charlie lost his job as a holiday rep during Covid.
After considering other options including wax melts, they decided to start selling sweets after spotting a seller offering wholesale sweets cheaply.
They started selling the goodies online but initially were only making one sale per week on Facebook.
After making the switch to TikTok in March 2021, the couple quickly went viral with their livestreams packing orders.
They went from one order per week to 600 orders per month – and when they moved to a bigger space in June, they leapt up to 4000 orders per month.
The entrepreneurial couple then opened a shopfront in Egham in October 2022 where they now employ seven staff.
The business continued to grow and after a period of going viral in August 2023 they made a whopping £51k in just three days.
“We’ve got a website and TikTok shop which led to £750k turnover in our first year and now we’ve got a website, TikTok shop, high street shop and seven staff members who run the business day to day,” said Charlie.
“We always have the newest and rarest imported stock which takes up quite a lot of money as it’s not cheap to import.
“We’ve been refurbishing the high street shop so the online site will stay as imports, but the shopfront will be traditional sweets.
“Three years ago, we thought this was a temporary business and now it’s our full-time job, we want to keep it going and put the money back into the business.
“We’ve gone back to front and started on social media, and it’s been our own growth which has led to us being able to rent a shop.
“It amazes me every day that social media has allowed us to change our lives.”

00:00 Oh I dropped a poor dolphin.
00:02 A baby dolphin.
00:04 Poor dolphiness.
00:07 That's £1 for those ones then please.
00:11 Six piece fudge.
00:15 Pickaxe.
00:17 We just, we'll play over there if you're not.
00:21 There's a purple cup and the large is...
00:26 Yeah, a medium cup of course you can.
00:28 Yeah, of course you can.
00:30 Raspberry and strawberry.
00:37 Raspberry and strawberry.
00:39 Where have you guys been?
00:51 Yeah, not too far.
00:52 Yeah, what's next?
00:53 Hi, I'm Georgia.
00:56 And I'm Charlie and we own Sweets and Sour Ltd.
00:59 Our little house logo.
01:04 Keep talking.
01:05 Okay, I think the Peter's lollipop rings look really cute.
01:08 They're like little bunnies.
01:10 Perfect for Easter.
01:11 What looks cool?
01:12 Our cardboard boxes that we ship our orders out in.
01:15 They're so colourful.
01:17 They're really strong.
01:18 I'm going to make sure our orders get there safe.
01:21 So when we first started Sweets and Sour
01:24 it was in 2021 coming out of lockdown
01:26 and I just lost my job.
01:28 I used to be a holiday rep working overseas
01:31 and Georgia was still working.
01:33 I was still working my normal job when we first started.
01:36 Which was as a care worker.
01:38 So I decided to buy some sweets that I found on Facebook
01:42 and they were wholesale sweets
01:45 and we started popping them into,
01:47 distributing them into small little bags
01:49 where we then sold them on Facebook Marketplace
01:51 for different prices.
01:53 As just a hobby to try and fill some time.
01:57 I'll make myself a milkshake.
01:58 It explodes everywhere.
02:00 Do not recommend.
02:02 Yeah, well that's half term this week
02:03 so there's been no pattern to it.
02:05 It's just been madness.
02:08 We should have really sorted out the crisper
02:14 and made it look all light and neat.
02:16 We then went on to Etsy
02:19 as we got a little bit more well known
02:21 and created our own website
02:23 and started up a TikTok page.
02:25 And that's how we grew our social media following.
02:27 So TikTok really did boost our business.
02:30 We went from getting one order a week to about,
02:33 it went from one order a week to slowly building up
02:36 to then 400 orders a week within a couple of months.
02:39 The case was starting from the till.
02:41 Remember?
02:43 What we're looking at at the moment is Sunkist.
02:45 That's it.
02:46 Yeah.
02:47 That's the water.
02:48 I was going to say appetiser,
02:49 but it's not far.
02:51 Yeah, that's the fridge in the shop.
02:53 So is Pepsi Max, Joey.
02:55 You sure it's not the fridge?
02:57 No.
02:59 We then decided to take out a lease
03:02 on the shop we're currently in now.
03:04 Yes, which obviously opened up
03:07 our retail side of the business
03:09 whilst we're still growing our online side.
03:11 So online we stock over 8,000 products
03:13 from around the world.
03:15 Products from America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada.
03:18 There's over 45 countries we import products from.
03:21 And then our lease for our shop in Egham
03:23 is where we have our traditional sweet shop,
03:25 selling traditional pick and mix
03:27 and all the old school favourites,
03:29 which has grown the business as a separate part.
03:31 So obviously bringing in more customers.
03:33 M&M's, Chick-fil-A, everything but the bagel and key were at M&M's.
03:37 Yeah, that's correct.
03:39 That comes to £38.96, then, please.
03:41 Thank you.
03:43 Would you like your receipt today?
03:46 No.
03:48 So now we usually get about 3,000 to 5,000 orders a week.
03:52 That is across our website and our TikTok shop.
03:55 And then we do have quite a busy shop
03:57 that's open seven days a week,
03:59 serving hundreds of customers a day.
04:01 So the business has grown from doing one to two orders a week
04:04 to what we're doing today.
04:06 And it's still growing every single month.
04:08 Each month is busier than the previous month.
04:11 Army Navy, Cherry Lips, the real floral gums.
04:14 Then we've got stuff here as well, like Cola Q's.
04:16 Grandma likes lip gloss and cosmetics.
04:18 Yeah.
04:20 And so we're waiting like quarter.
04:23 And now here we are, just over three years later,
04:27 with seven staff, our shop, our website, our TikTok shop.
04:31 And this is our lives now, isn't it?
04:33 Yeah, full-time.
04:35 Full-time.
04:37 So the growth has been absolutely crazy.
04:39 Went from nothing to...
04:41 Well, we're just about to hit our first million-pound turn over a year.
04:44 So pretty insane for a sweet shop.
04:47 Yeah.
04:49 What's next?
05:02 Let me jump.
05:08 [laughs]
05:10 Thank you. See you later.
