A family ditched their traditional Christmas tree for a standing sculpture and said they'll never go back.
Alexandria Masse, 24, created what she calls a "Christmas obelisk" - which will replace her family's tree this year.
Alexandria, a textile artist, made the "obelisk" last year but hated the result and stored it in her parents' guest room for over a year and a half.
When going through her stuff last month, she rediscovered it and decided to transform it into a Christmas tree.
She dyed it green and added some baubles and lights and now it has taken the role of Christmas tree in her family's front room.
Now they are thinking of keeping the "obelisk" and using it for "years to come".

00:00This is my family's Christmas tree. Well, we've been calling it the Christmas obelisk,
00:03so I made the sculpture out of garbage and foam last year and crocheted and knit a skin for it,
00:07and I absolutely hated it. I had this idea to dye it green so we could use it as our Christmas tree
00:11this year. First thing is that I need to take the skin off. The last time I dyed it, it turned out
00:14horrible, so hopefully I can redeem myself. I used all-purpose dye and synthetic dye because
00:19I used acrylic cotton and wool yarn. I didn't have a pot large enough, so I ended up boiling water
00:22and dumping it in a big bin. I don't know what I was thinking, but it actually fit and it did work
00:26out. I left it overnight like this, then I mixed a bunch of green paint and I started covering this
00:29thing. Once the paint was dry and the skin was washed and dried, I put it back on the obelisk.
00:33So far, it looks so cool. The wool really took to the dye and all the acrylic is kind of this
00:37light green. Once I stitched it up, I wanted to add some surface crochet, which was so fun to do.
00:41I stitched the bottom back down and added more surface crochet, and it was all done,
00:44and I think it looks gorgeous. The details are so fun. It's weird and kitsch, but it's so me.
00:48For reference, I'm 5'9", probably 5'10", in these slippers. I decided to move her to the living room
00:51so we could decorate. We started off with Christmas lights and just went nuts with the ornaments. To
00:55keep the star in place, I put it on a barbecue skewer. We thought it was so funny to keep it
00:58lopsided. This is what it looks like with the lights off. Next year, I definitely need to get
01:02more lights. She's looking a little sparse. I think it's so fabulous and weird and a fun
01:06alternative to a traditional tree. It's nice. It's comforting. It's artistic. It's daring.
01:10It's modern. It's camp. But most importantly, my family likes it. Okay, so my Christmas obelisk
01:15sculpture went viral, and I'm overwhelmingly surprised by how many people loved my alternative
01:20Christmas tree. A lot of comments told me it reminds them of Delilah Deet's sculpture from
01:23Beetlejuice. To be honest, I've never seen Beetlejuice, so I had to google the reference,
01:26but I totally get it. A lot of people also said it looks very Grinch and Whoville-like,
01:31as well as a Tim Burton prop, and I agree with both. And to answer the question,
01:34does your cat try to destroy it? No. Luckily, Felix is really chill. He's
01:38never cared about Christmas trees in previous years, so this one isn't any different.
