00:00 Many of the editors here at Afar would agree.
00:09 Portugal is an amazing travel destination.
00:11 One of my favorite things about it is the food.
00:14 Join me as I show you a few essential Portuguese foods you must try on your next trip.
00:25 Bacalhau or salted cod is one of the most common foods in Portugal, and nearly every
00:30 Portuguese restaurant has a version of it on the menu.
00:33 You can find it baked, grilled, in rice or as fried croquettes.
00:37 My favorite preparation happens to be the most popular, bacalhau a bras.
00:42 Basically the bacalhau is shredded into scrambled eggs with onions and fried potatoes.
00:47 Delicious!
00:48 As a coastal country with islands like the Azores and Madeira, it's not surprising that
00:54 Portugal has a lot of seafood.
00:56 There are braiser clams, mussels, shrimp, lobster and limpets, a type of sea snake.
01:01 And that's just a shellfish.
01:03 To try a bit of everything in one dish, look for arroz de marisco, a seafood rice dish,
01:09 or cataplana de marisco, a hearty seafood stew.
01:13 Both are loaded with a mix of crustaceans and fish.
01:19 No matter how you feel about tinned fish, there is no denying that sardines, both fresh
01:23 and tinned, are very popular here.
01:27 Usually the preparation is pretty simple.
01:29 Grilled sardines served with boiled potatoes, or if you are at a bar, sardines straight
01:34 from the can served with bread.
01:36 Okay, so it's not all seafood in Portugal, and a great example is a dish originally from
01:42 the Alentejo region called arroz de pato, or duck rice.
01:48 The rice is made with a flavorful broth mixed with shredded duck, then topped with spicy
01:53 chorizo sausage and served with orange slices.
01:56 So good.
01:58 Next we have the francesinha, which is an over-the-top sandwich made by stacking cured
02:02 ham, linguiça sausage and steak, or roast beef, between thick slices of bread.
02:09 It's then covered in melted cheese and drowned in a hot tomato and beer sauce.
02:14 Finishing touches can include a fried egg and a side of french fries.
02:18 This is the pride of Porto.
02:20 It's both a hangover cure and a ticket to the emergency room.
02:26 Last but not least, we have the country's most famous dessert, pastel de nata.
02:32 These small tarts have a flaky pastry shell filled with creamy egg custard.
02:37 They're usually topped with powdered sugar or cinnamon.
02:40 I love how the tarts are sweet, but not too sweet.
02:45 Of course, these are just a few of the many, many delicious things you can eat in Portugal.
02:51 We have a few more suggestions for you on Arfa.com and I'm gonna include a link to the
02:55 article below.
02:56 But we'd love to hear from you.
02:58 What are some of your favorite Portuguese foods?
03:01 Let us know in the comments and as always, thanks for watching.
