SMNI promises ‘better’ programming once back on air | Business and Politics

SMNI consultant and former TV host Jay Sonza says the suspension of the network is not based on solid ground. He said the network is recalibrating to produce better shows and programs. Sonza also recalled the early beginnings of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KJC) church, whose known leader, Apollo Quiboloy, has been a long time friend.

00:00 So I just want to circle back to what you said earlier, that your family, just like the Pastor's family, migrated from Pampanga to Mindanao.
00:12 Do you know your family members? And maybe you should clarify also, did you get involved in the Kingdom?
00:18 Did you get involved here? What is your relationship with Pastor?
00:24 Pastor and I are friends and childhood friends. He is a bit older than me.
00:32 But when I started broadcasting in Davao, of course you are looking at the small people.
00:40 And I found a good pastor as one of the very few.
00:45 I saw him, the first church he built, the chapel, he started at Our Castillo in Jerom.
00:55 It was like a bank in Tondo.
01:00 You said he was just 7 years old?
01:05 He was patient. And then I saw how he grew.
01:10 First of all, I am not a member of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
01:15 My mother is a Roman Catholic, locked up, and thrown out of her house.
01:21 But I thank God.
01:24 Anyway, he was so kind.
01:27 I am witness to the fact that he studied a lot.
01:32 To the point that he was really fed.
01:36 He built buildings by himself.
01:39 When those buildings were not popular, when they built the kingdom,
01:43 when we were passing by, it was a mess.
01:46 Then we saw the members of the kingdom, helping each other, building the post.
01:52 The one who was reading.
01:55 So I said, no wonder, his members are really loyal to him.
02:02 We saw how he treats everybody in his organization.
02:10 Degong is not a member of KOJC.
02:13 But they are close.
02:15 Probably, you know Filipinos, or even non-Filipinos, the envy.
02:22 Because you can't imagine how big he was.
02:25 First, the churches, the LCI, etc.
02:31 But he grew, he grew.
02:34 And this is a secret, not many people know.
02:38 This SMNI, is the one who pays his workers, despite the fact that they are members of the church.
02:46 Because the others are just volunteers.
02:49 I don't know what his English is, but he doesn't want to be paid.
03:01 So you can see, even in the car of the SMNI, he is really top of the line.
03:06 If you are going to serve, you should give the right amount.
03:12 So that what you are giving is right.
03:15 You know, just to acknowledge some of the criticisms, they say it's like a cult.
03:22 What do you think?
03:25 You know, that's what always happens, even my mother is like that.
03:30 Because first, we started, most of us are Catholics.
03:34 But when people started learning and practicing the teachings of the Bible.
03:41 When you are Bible-centered, you are called a cult by the elders.
03:46 Because they don't understand why you dedicate so much.
03:50 So much time.
03:53 Because the typical Catholic, he will go to the church, will do the cross,
04:00 then will listen to the mass,
04:02 when the priest is humbling himself, the men will come out, they will listen to the gospel, they will talk.
04:06 That's typical.
04:08 But in Christian communities, whether SMN, KOJC, 700 Club, all of them are Bible-based.
04:17 Even the Quran-based Muslims, when they worship,
04:24 because my son-in-laws are Muslims, are Islams, their practice,
04:31 it's really...
04:35 So the criticism is unfounded.
04:38 But have you ever been recruited?
04:43 No.
04:44 Didn't you force to make friends, or you are childhood friends or something?
04:48 Even when I...
04:49 What is your friendship?
04:51 Our friendship is like this, if he wants to talk, he will call.
04:56 If I'm not doing anything, come here, let's talk, let's have coffee.
05:00 Just like that.
05:01 And since we are old...
05:03 He didn't pressure you?
05:04 No.
05:05 He said, "You are younger than me, you are already breathing, because I have asthma."
05:12 He is already 70, almost 80, but he is still playing basketball, full court.
05:19 You got into trouble a little bit, who doesn't?
05:23 Didn't you tell him, or teach him or whatever?
05:29 No, because my latest trouble, were all Trump charges, as a matter of fact, they were all dismissed.
05:36 So he is not like that, like preachy?
05:38 No.
05:39 He just said, he brought it to me, because we don't meet often,
05:45 what is this called, he just said to our common friend,
05:50 "I know Jay can withstand that."
05:52 Okay.
05:53 Which is, maybe he prayed for me, I'm sure he did.
05:58 As others would have done, those who are with me in the Oasis of Love Catholic Renewal Community.
06:05 So, that's it.
06:07 But what does Jayson know, that other people don't know, about Pastor...
06:13 He is too kind.
06:14 Okay.
06:15 To the point that he abuses.
06:17 Because I look at those who accuse him,
06:21 Oh, you believe it? He raised them, fed them, educated them, even became a lawyer.
06:28 He even gave them cars so they can practice.
06:31 And yet, they are the ones who...
06:33 I don't know, for whatever reasons, I don't know the reason why they did it.
06:40 But when you talk to them, because most of those original members of...
06:46 Because in Davao, we almost know each other, Davao was just small that day.
06:51 Even if they were selling cigarettes, selling shoes, we know each other.
06:56 So, we know, right?
06:59 The people who grew up in Davao would know.
07:04 The ingots, of course, that's a story.
07:06 Sure.
07:07 That's a story.
07:08 And I am not surprised because, of course, you know,
07:11 some people are doing business, this is their name, Relayon.
07:16 Sure.
07:17 So, maybe they are jealous because,
07:19 think about it, I have seen that there are big schools.
07:23 Their school is full of air conditioners.
07:26 It's like the school of Manila Times.
07:28 I saw that, but we are not that big compared to them.
07:33 But Juan, it means, you provide an ambience for students to really learn.
07:40 So, what do you think, is he the target?
07:43 Or the president, former president, is the target?
07:46 Or are they both the target?
07:48 Now, they are both the target.
07:50 That's what I said, three things.
07:53 But you can't...
07:56 Because they are really friends, they are friends.
08:00 They are family.
08:02 So, what the white thinks, I would say,
08:07 if you put Kibuloy in the middle,
08:10 he will be able to meet Mayor Digong, President Digong.
08:14 And the other one is not like that.
08:17 So, that's one problem.
08:19 Second, this one, because there are news,
08:25 there is an obsessed position.
08:28 I would even venture to advise him to take the other route.
08:35 That you are friends, don't fight.
08:39 Because, what, let's say he is not a last-termer.
08:45 He still has one term, so he will stay in that position.
08:49 But he intends to run for a higher office.
08:52 By the time, by the time he runs in 2028,
08:58 maybe the algorithm of SMNI and New Media will be different.
09:02 But are you saying that the pastor is like that?
09:05 That he is vindictive?
09:09 Yes, vindictive.
09:10 He is not.
09:11 Because when we talked to him, he said, let's pray.
09:15 Of course, he is a lawyer and image maker like us.
09:19 Or operations, broadcast operations people like us.
09:23 Our recommendations are different.
09:25 Because we are already being pushed.
09:28 We are already being pushed. We are already being taught, right?
09:32 I said yesterday when we had a meeting,
09:35 we of course caution our anchors,
09:39 that if you are going to go forward, don't.
09:43 Just attack left and right.
09:45 So what do you think, what's the endgame here?
09:51 What do you think will happen?
09:52 Something's got to give.
09:54 Either SMNI goes by the wayside or
09:58 the assault will back off.
10:03 What's your take?
10:05 The win-win situation is actually simple.
10:07 If they have the goods to revoke the franchise,
10:14 by all means, the perpetrator has the right to do so.
10:19 But if they don't have, I mean,
10:22 Who told me? I think it was Justice Conrado Vasquez who told me,
10:29 "There is nothing wrong with admitting a crime."
10:34 It is even healthy.
10:36 So, they don't have to go public and apologize.
10:42 Or simply, they should just end it.
10:45 Or tell the NTC, you do your job according to your process.
10:50 They remove the pressure.
10:53 But table on the side of SMNI.
10:56 Is there a mistake that should be made?
10:59 What's your...
11:01 There are changes that should be made.
11:05 And we intend to do that.
11:07 Especially when we go to free-to-air.
11:11 Because it's different.
11:12 In free-to-air, you have a limit.
11:14 This is the difference between print and broadcast.
11:18 In print, we can do everything.
11:21 In broadcast, you have a franchise.
11:24 That has limitations.
11:26 Like, I remember when Maring Winnie started with me in GMA.
11:33 I said, "It's cheap, Maring Winnie."
11:35 "It's not allowed."
11:37 Although, there is a jurisprudence in the Supreme Court
11:40 that it's not wrong to make the PI cheap.
11:45 But if we're going to stop it, let's stop it.
11:51 So, we always think
11:57 when we go back to free-to-air,
11:59 if ever we are granted the opportunity to go back soonest.
12:04 Because we're going to go back.
12:05 I'm hopeful we will be back very soon.
12:08 What we're saying to the viewers,
12:13 expect a better SMNI.
12:16 If not the best SMNI.
12:19 I think that's a good place to end our discussion.
12:22 Very interesting talk, Mr. Jeyo Sonsa.
12:24 Thank you.
12:25 Thank you very much.
12:26 But before we go, maybe you want to leave our viewers with some final thoughts.
12:30 To all the viewers, especially those in Mindanao,
12:37 I hope you will not forget our promise
12:43 that we will continue to be humble.
12:50 I hope you will also go to Central Luzon, especially Pampanga,
12:55 if you are able to leave
12:58 and join the SMNI,
13:01 I will be waiting for your updates.
13:04 Goodbye.
13:05 Goodbye.
13:06 Goodbye.
