00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:25 up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:28 I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Monday 12th February.
00:33 Goals galore!
00:34 Dover Athletic tackle a ten goal thriller away from home.
00:40 Gymtimidation.
00:41 We visit one in Thanet to find out top tips to beating gym anxiety.
00:47 And rowing for the towns.
00:49 Medway's rowing club relaunches with big ambitions.
00:54 But to start tonight we look back at the headlines.
00:56 Gillingham's head coach Stephen Clements believes their win over Notts County would
01:00 have been felt across the league.
01:02 Goals from Ollie Hawkins, Max Clarke and Connor Masterson clinched all three points at Notts
01:07 County and lifted Gilles up to seventh in the League Two table at the start of the weekend.
01:12 The head coach said after the game that there's no better feeling than getting a win away
01:16 from home.
01:17 Now down to ninth, the Medway side are just a couple of points away from a playoff place
01:21 as they prepare to face rivals Swindon at Freesville tomorrow.
01:26 Here's striker Ollie Hawkins reflecting on that mission ahead of them.
01:31 Yeah, I mean I'm not too sure about that myself but yeah, it's going to be another tough game,
01:35 completely different game probably.
01:37 Going back home and I think Gaffer said previously he wants us to show some character and go
01:42 away from home and win a game and go back straight home and win as well.
01:45 So we know we want to go there on Tuesday and obviously back home and win and show another
01:50 good performance and then get up that league.
01:53 Of course we'll have more on the football results later on.
01:55 Now an inquest has heard details of the death of a young jockey at Charing Racecourse near
02:00 Ashford.
02:01 25-year-old Keegan Kirkby died after his horse refused to jump, bolted into a fence and then
02:07 threw him off before landing on him.
02:09 The hearing at Oakwood House in Maidstone was told the 25-year-old was given immediate
02:14 first aid but paramedics were unable to save him.
02:17 A post-mortem confirmed that he died from multiple injuries.
02:20 A fundraiser has been set up for Keegan's funeral.
02:24 It's now reached more than £50,000.
02:27 Tickets for Maidstone United's FA Cup fifth round clash against Coventry City are set
02:33 to go on sale soon, with the club due to announce when it'll happen tomorrow.
02:37 United will travel to the Championship Club Stadium on Monday 26 February for their history-making
02:43 final 16 match.
02:46 The size of the away allocation has not yet been announced but the Stones should be allocated
02:51 around 4,000 tickets.
02:53 Prices will start at £15 for adults and tickets for Maidstone's previous FA Cup match against
02:59 Ipswich sold out in less than 100 minutes.
03:03 Now sticking with Maidstone, Sam Noakes has become British lightweight champion with a
03:07 ruthless stoppage victory at London's Copper Box Arena.
03:11 Noakes bested fellow unbeaten opponent Louis Sylvester after putting him down twice in
03:16 the third round and again in the fourth.
03:17 The Aucklandshireman's corner then threw in the towel.
03:20 The win sees Noakes add the British and WBO international titles to his Commonwealth and
03:24 WBC international silver crowns.
03:27 Noakes' record now sits at 13-0, all by stoppage.
03:32 Now let's take a look at the football results from the weekend, where National League South
03:36 basement boys Dover Athletic found themselves travelling away to Worthing.
03:42 Welcome to the Football Roundup.
03:44 This week we're kicking off with Saturday's National League South match-up between Dover
03:48 Athletic and Worthing FC.
03:50 Dover really need the win here to climb for the bottom of the table.
03:54 Now after several shots at both ends, Worthing's Tommy Willard sends a long ball up all the
03:58 way to Dylan Fage.
04:00 What a ball that is.
04:01 And he takes it and chips it just around the keeper at the last moment to start the scoring
04:05 in the 20th minute.
04:07 Next a corner sent into keeper Gennady's box.
04:10 He's forced to make another save, but he can't stop the onslaught of shots.
04:14 And the third one is just too strong for him.
04:16 Fine, until Oli Pearce is forced down the right side by Gennady.
04:20 He can't shoot from there, but he does and places it just where Holding can't clear it.
04:24 The third Worthing goal.
04:26 Now for Dover fans this must be really hard to watch, but you can't look away.
04:30 And what a strike of the highest calibre.
04:33 George Wilkinson's free kick is untouched as it rockets past the keeper.
04:37 Could this put them back in the game?
04:38 And Luc Baptiste takes a touch in the box and he's sent down by Fage and the ref takes
04:42 no time.
04:43 He knows and so do we that that's a penalty clear as day.
04:47 And he slots it bottom right.
04:48 The keeper had no idea.
04:51 Into the next half now and a clever one-two sends the ball just across the Dover net.
04:56 How did no one hit that first time?
04:57 But it doesn't matter.
04:58 Oli Pearce leathers it at Gennady for his second goal.
05:02 It goes to Klaas who goes down and it's another penalty.
05:06 Can you believe it?
05:07 Is this a ref who just loves his whistle too much?
05:10 Well it's Pearce ahead of the sticks.
05:12 Can he make it a hat-trick?
05:13 He can.
05:15 Dover will need a miracle to come back from this.
05:19 And that's a big error from Charles Cook.
05:21 Klaas takes it down the flank.
05:22 He goes up against Gennady and that makes four for Pearce.
05:27 Dover are down by four goals all thanks to one player.
05:30 No matter whose side you're on you have to give the striker some credit.
05:34 He's done his job.
05:35 Now time is running out for Dover.
05:37 They're on the counter again.
05:38 Henry Young works his way down to the line.
05:40 Finds Wilkinson and it's a great goal from him again.
05:43 But only mild cheers from the away fans who know that was nothing more than a consolation
05:47 prize.
05:48 Oh and with the sun setting on this match George Nikhaj makes a run.
05:53 Finds Hatcher at the far post and he makes it six-four.
05:57 But it was not enough as the full-time whistle goes.
06:00 Just a ten goal thriller of a match.
06:04 And here's how the National League South table looks for your Kent teams.
06:08 Can Dover make the climb back up from the bottom and can Maidstone make it to promotion?
06:14 Now let's look at the other side of the pyramid.
06:16 Gillingham managed to put three past Notts County last Friday and are currently only
06:20 just on the top half of the League Two table.
06:24 Tomorrow they face 17th place Swindon to hopefully claw back up the table.
06:28 I'm just really pleased for everybody.
06:30 Obviously we've got a lot of work to do.
06:32 Still got a lot of games to play.
06:34 But I think we've had 950 travel up here today on a Friday night which is absolutely fantastic.
06:40 So thanks for all their support.
06:41 They were absolutely brilliant.
06:42 I could hear them all night.
06:44 And they really helped the boys.
06:46 But it's one win and that's all it is.
06:50 We've got to now go and get another one on Tuesday.
06:52 Now in the National League it's not looking good for Ebsleet after their two-all draw
06:56 with Chesterfield.
06:57 They really needed a win here.
07:00 And here's the National League table just to show it.
07:02 And they've only got Oxford City below them and just three points walling them off from
07:06 relegation.
07:08 And finally we had a classic Kent derby in the Isthmian League this Saturday.
07:13 Chatham Town saw off Margate in the Bovell Stadium.
07:16 Here's the rest of the Isthmian Premier.
07:18 Chatham Town need to continue their strong form if they have any hope of catching up
07:22 to Hornchurch who are just running away with the League.
07:25 Well that's all for this week's Kent Football Roundup.
07:28 Thank you so much for watching and we'll see you on Friday.
07:31 Ten goals, can you believe it?
07:33 Some really good ones there as well.
07:35 Now don't forget you can keep up to date with all the latest football news by reading Kent
07:38 Online.
07:39 But did you also know you can have your weekly digest of non-league news from around the
07:43 county sent directly to your email inbox.
07:47 Just search Kent Online, email alerts and sign up on the website for all the latest
07:50 written transfer news, match reports and interviews.
07:53 There's also the choice to read all the latest from Gillingham.
07:56 I've got a really nice one in my inbox this morning.
07:58 Do check it out.
08:01 Now many of us across Kent have decided to pick up going to the gym as part of our New
08:05 Year's resolutions.
08:07 But more than a month into the New Year and many will have already given up after suffering
08:10 with gym anxiety.
08:12 It's something that affects two in five UK adults who find themselves avoiding the shared
08:16 workout space because they feel self-conscious.
08:19 This week, producers of Kent Student 101, Daisy and Charlotte headed to the gym at Thanet
08:24 Pro Wrestling to speak with their coach about how to overcome gym intimidation.
08:29 For some students, going to the gym is a habit and just another part of their routine.
08:33 But for others, it can feel inaccessible and even daunting.
08:37 If you experience gym anxiety, you are not alone.
08:40 Today we'll follow Charlotte, a student at the University of Kent, through her introduction
08:44 to the gym.
08:45 I've been to the gym probably twice when I was a bit younger to go to a class.
08:50 But normally I exercise at home.
08:52 I find that exercise is really helpful for maintaining my physical and mental well-being.
08:58 It improves my mood and also gives me a sense of productivity.
09:01 I'm feeling a bit nervous, but I'm here to show people that it's OK to try things that
09:05 you're afraid of and we can all benefit from doing things for the first time.
09:15 Professional trainer Jordan is here to help.
09:18 Hi, my name's Jordan.
09:21 I am a professional wrestler and a personal trainer.
09:25 The gym can look like a scary place.
09:28 Gym intimidation is a real thing.
09:30 In the nicest possible way, nobody cares.
09:33 They're there to do their thing.
09:36 You're just there to do your thing.
09:37 It becomes a nice atmosphere because everyone is there supporting each other.
09:41 If I was to give tips to anyone starting the gym, I would definitely say come in with a
09:46 plan.
09:47 Know what you're doing, know what the plan is for the day.
09:51 Have alternatives in your mind as well.
09:52 So if you get in and it's really busy, you might want to do a leg press, but there's
09:57 no leg press free.
09:58 So maybe grab a kettlebell and have in mind that you're going to do goblet squats instead.
10:03 It's all too easy for students to feel busy or stressed to set aside time for exercise.
10:08 We asked Jordan why it is so important and for tips to stay consistent.
10:13 It's easier said than done and it's something that you will be told and you might not believe
10:17 straight away, but it's not motivation.
10:21 It's more just habit, creating that lifestyle of healthy eating, healthy living, healthy
10:27 life.
10:28 Working out and exercise and fitness, it releases all those feel-good hormones.
10:34 So naturally you're just going to feel better.
10:36 It's going to reduce anxiety.
10:37 It's going to reduce stress.
10:38 It's going to make you feel great.
10:39 It was great to have Jordan here to talk me through what's available at the gym and how
10:45 to use it.
10:46 I think I'd feel more prepared now walking into the gym on campus if I wanted to.
10:50 As we found today, campus gyms aren't the only option for students.
10:55 Planet Pro Wrestling is one of the many independent gyms available for students in Kent.
10:59 If you're feeling apprehensive, consider asking for an induction.
11:03 This is Daisy for KMTV.
11:05 Well, some good tips there.
11:07 Now you can watch all episodes of the new series of Kent Student 101, which is produced
11:12 entirely by students on our Year in Television course in partnership with the University
11:16 of Kent, on our website.
11:17 Just head to kmtv.co.uk.
11:18 A brand new episode coming this Thursday as well.
11:22 Now before we go this evening, or before we go into a break rather, we've still got plenty
11:25 more to come this evening.
11:27 If you want to take part in the show and you want to appear, you absolutely can.
11:30 The easiest way to do so is by sending in some clips and pictures for this week's edition
11:34 of Action Replay.
11:35 It's of course my favourite part of the show.
11:37 It's where we showcase KMTV viewers taking part in sporting action.
11:41 Some great examples on the screen right now.
11:44 Just make sure you send in your clips to our social media or email to sport@kmtv.co.uk.
11:52 Now it's time for a break.
11:53 I'll be back in just a few minutes.
11:54 See you soon.

15:15 Hello and welcome back to Invicta Sport
15:17 live on KMTV.
15:19 Now if you want to keep up to date with all
15:21 the latest sports news, interviews
15:23 and features from here on Invicta Sport
15:25 all you need to do is head to our website
15:27 KMTV.co.uk, click on that
15:29 sports tab and then you'll see videos like
15:31 this one from when I spoke to international
15:33 squash player Dylan Roberts after he
15:35 returned from the British Junior Open.
15:37 How did it all go at the weekend?
15:39 So the weekend,
15:41 it didn't go how I was hoping to go.
15:43 So I was still quite tired
15:45 from the week before in America
15:47 where I finished in the top 10.
15:49 This weekend in Birmingham
15:51 I came 20th
15:53 so it wasn't too bad
15:55 but I was hoping to do a bit better.
15:57 No, 20th that is fantastic to hear
15:59 and obviously as you say
16:01 you do go around the world competing.
16:03 You do have quite a bit of experience
16:05 and I understand before you went into this
16:07 competition you'd won the
16:09 under 13s English Junior Championship
16:11 back in 2020.
16:13 So what is your kind of routine
16:15 as you go into these tournaments?
16:17 Do you have a kind of usual kind of
16:19 what's your kind of motions as you gear up
16:21 towards a tournament?
16:23 So in the lead up to tournaments
16:25 I'll try and play
16:27 a lot of matches
16:29 just to build up my confidence
16:31 before the tournament so I'm going in there
16:33 feeling confident, feeling like
16:35 I'm going to do well
16:37 and then a couple of days before
16:39 I'll slow that down a bit
16:41 and take a day off
16:43 maybe so that my body
16:45 has time to relax
16:47 and then we'll go into the tournament from there.
16:49 And tell me how was it
16:51 that you got into squash
16:53 because it's not exactly the most mainstream
16:55 of sports but am I right in saying that
16:57 your dad actually played squash before you?
16:59 Yeah, so my dad played squash
17:01 round the corner from our house
17:03 at Bexley Park
17:05 and I used to just go down there with him
17:07 and then I'd try and get on court
17:09 and he just got me really involved.
17:11 But I mean it's such a fast paced sport
17:13 and we just saw on the screen there
17:15 some clips and it's really starting to pick up
17:17 some traction because it's actually going to be
17:19 included in one of the next Olympic Games
17:21 not this year in Paris of course
17:23 but in the 2028
17:25 Los Angeles Games so
17:27 you're sort of competing in the
17:29 junior competitions
17:31 you're an Olympic hopeful now
17:33 is that the kind of dream for you?
17:35 Yeah, so that's always been a dream
17:37 from a young age and now that
17:39 it's been put into the LA
17:41 2028 Olympics
17:43 that's going to be my goal for the future
17:45 so that's what I'll be working towards
17:47 in the next few years.
17:49 Absolutely and
17:51 I mean it must give you quite a boost
17:53 as well to hear, I mean it wasn't too long ago
17:55 that it was actually selected as one of the
17:57 Olympic sports for 2028
17:59 it must feel so good as a player
18:01 to have your sport have such a boost
18:03 to hear that more people are going to be interested in it.
18:05 Yeah, it's really good to hear that the sport's
18:09 getting a lot more recognition
18:11 because it feels recently like
18:13 it hasn't been
18:15 heard enough and watched enough
18:17 so it's been really good
18:19 and you've heard a lot more people talking
18:21 about it and hopefully it will get a lot more
18:23 funding into the sport as well.
18:25 Of course, now you
18:27 as well as playing internationally
18:29 you must play locally as well, what's the kind of
18:31 scene in Kent like?
18:33 So
18:35 the scene in Kent is actually really good
18:37 the standard is really high
18:39 recently it's been improving
18:41 we're trying to get a lot more juniors
18:43 involved in squash
18:45 so that's where
18:47 the programme's at now.
18:49 Fantastic, now I haven't played squash
18:51 before I must admit, what would
18:53 be your advice to somebody who's trying it out
18:55 because it is very fast paced as we've
18:57 already said, it's not like playing tennis.
18:59 To start with playing squash I'd just
19:03 say give it a go because it's a good way to
19:05 it's a good workout and
19:07 it's fun, you can socialise with other people
19:09 so just really give it a go.
19:11 Great stuff, now it's time to meet our next guest
19:15 this evening, former international rower
19:17 Angus Kennedy is Medway Town's
19:19 rowing club's new coach. He says
19:21 he wants to take his new club to Henley
19:23 in three years, the only problem
19:25 is that right now it has no members
19:27 hoping to change that, Angus and his
19:29 17 year old son George are hosting
19:31 an open day this coming Saturday
19:33 for people to give the sport a try
19:35 I caught up with both of them earlier today.
19:37 Well I started, my brother
19:39 got me into rowing as a sort of joke
19:41 down in London at the Lee Rowing Club
19:43 and he said why don't you just try this for a laugh
19:45 I fell in, I was really useless
19:47 and then one thing led to another
19:49 and then I won my first race
19:51 and that was it, I was hooked
19:53 and then I kind of went up to Notts County
19:55 and then, to cut a long story short
19:57 I've managed to get quite a high level in rowing
19:59 and when I came across that line
20:01 first at Henley, when I won my Henley medal
20:03 I just want people to feel
20:05 what that's like, because that's really special
20:07 so that's why we're here really
20:09 Well you say you got quite high with it
20:11 you rowed for the country
20:13 Yes I did, yeah
20:15 it's not the sort of thing you tell people in a pub
20:17 hey I did this, you know, because it's nice to be a bit modest
20:19 but we've got our little cabinet
20:21 I've got my cabinet, I've got my medals
20:23 so I have rowed for Great Britain
20:25 And now you're here with the
20:27 Medway Towns Rowing Club, tell me how that
20:29 partnership came about
20:31 Well we tried rowing a while back
20:33 but then unfortunately I had to have some arm surgery
20:35 so I had ligaments so I couldn't do anything
20:37 and George came down
20:39 and he wants to row, he's very keen
20:41 so I just started off with taking my son down
20:43 hey let's get you in a boat
20:45 and see what's happened, it was driven by him
20:47 and so we went down to the Medway
20:49 Towns Rowing Club, they were really friendly, really nice
20:51 people, but
20:53 they just didn't have enough, you know, it's like there weren't enough
20:55 people there, so they said
20:57 you know, why don't you
20:59 come and be the coach down here, you know
21:01 we'd love to have a coach here and just sort of
21:03 fire things up a bit, so that was like last week
21:05 so things are happening quite fast
21:07 Yeah pretty quick, so George
21:09 you were inspired by your dad to take part yourself
21:11 is he any good?
21:13 He is very good, yeah, he's a good coach
21:15 and a good father. Okay great, no that's
21:17 brilliant, so yeah, so you've
21:19 not been too long taking it on yourself
21:21 how have you been finding it?
21:23 Well I started rowing at school
21:25 about two years ago and
21:27 ever since I started I just haven't been
21:29 able to get off the water
21:31 whenever I look at the river I'm always like when can I next
21:33 get on the water, so
21:35 I mean it's quite a lovely river
21:37 as well isn't it, you get all sorts there, we were hearing
21:39 over the weekend they had some dolphins in
21:41 there, you get the big cargo ships,
21:43 river sailboats, all that kind of thing, so to be
21:45 a part of that, tell us what is the River Medway actually
21:47 like? Yeah, I mean it's
21:49 a difficult piece of water
21:51 at times, but if you get it right, you get high tide
21:53 low wind, it's perfect, like the last
21:55 couple of days have been beautiful haven't they, the
21:57 mirror, when you see the water, if anyone drives
21:59 over that bridge and it's really like a flat mirror
22:01 that's what we love, it's a good
22:03 piece of water, I mean there are issues with
22:05 things going into the river, you know like
22:07 sewage and stuff which isn't good
22:09 but we're hoping that that's going to get cleaned up
22:11 a bit, because there's a lot of things that need to happen
22:13 in order for us to make this work
22:15 because it's a big objective that we're setting ourselves
22:17 we've set a high goal here
22:19 in Kent, and it's good, we can't wait
22:21 but it's a good club, they're nice people
22:23 And you've got a taster session happening
22:25 this weekend, for people to come out and
22:27 try it out for the first time, George
22:29 you're fairly new to this, what's
22:31 your advice to somebody that's going to come out and try it for the first time?
22:33 Don't worry about it,
22:35 if you find it really difficult
22:37 just enjoy yourself and remember
22:39 it takes time.
22:41 As well, I was looking up, there's a film
22:43 that's recently come out about the US
22:45 Olympic squad, and
22:47 Joel Edgerton's character, he plays the coach
22:49 so he's quite shouty, quite
22:51 strict with them, what
22:53 style of coach are you with the group?
22:55 Which style
22:57 would you like to be? Well one thing about
22:59 I think there is definitely a lack of coaches
23:01 in the whole of Medway and Kent, a lot
23:03 of the clubs here, they really need
23:05 coaches, and it's a real problem
23:07 but my style, I'm not going to be shouting
23:09 at people, but I do get
23:11 really passionate about the sport, and I'm in
23:13 there saying "Come on, we're going to win this!"
23:15 I get really carried away, because I want to be
23:17 in that boat with them, you know
23:19 so I'm very, very passionate about it
23:21 but I think my style is, I think if you're
23:23 there in the water, because I was coached by
23:25 some of the top coaches in
23:27 the UK, and they're just
23:29 watching you, and it's like, they're watching
23:31 me, and you just say one thing
23:33 work on that, come off the water
23:35 and next thing, and you come off
23:37 feeling you're going a little bit faster
23:39 than when you went on the water
23:41 And it's such a team sport as well isn't it?
23:43 So how do you kind of get a group
23:45 that maybe didn't know each other before to
23:47 really get into that synchronised style
23:49 of rowing together? Yeah, that's really important
23:51 so you'll get like, I mean, we'll have a lot
23:53 of people coming on Saturday, which is great, they're all
23:55 really welcome, all ages, abilities, well actually
23:57 not all ages, over the age of 15 that is
23:59 and you'll get different rowing
24:01 styles, so a coach's job is really to say
24:03 okay, well this person's going back a bit too quick
24:05 so it's getting all together
24:07 but yeah, that film, we were sitting in that film together
24:09 thinking, do you know what?
24:11 I think we should do this, you know, and then
24:13 everything just happened, you know, it's
24:15 really good, it's a real good story because
24:17 the club really needs some help
24:19 I think it takes a community
24:21 to win a gold medal, it's not just
24:23 a team, it's a whole thing, it's parents
24:25 it's coaches, it's people, every single
24:27 cup of tea that's made at that club
24:29 is going towards that medal. That's great, and that's
24:31 the plan, isn't it? You want to take this group to
24:33 Henley, and actually, this
24:35 group's been around for years, this
24:37 club, they actually won it before in
24:39 1893, so
24:41 is that the kind of plan, to go back to history
24:43 They didn't win it, they lost in the final
24:45 in a White Falls Challenge Cup. Of course, yes, nobody won
24:47 Yes, right. And so we're thinking
24:49 right, it's kind of weird actually, because we were in the club
24:51 and it's got these old silver pots and things
24:53 and you think, God, you know, it's got like 1860
24:55 it's a really, Chatham
24:57 and this Medway's got a
24:59 real history of rowing, and
25:01 we've got to revive this, yeah, so
25:03 we're out to do something quite
25:05 special, but we're being quite modest about it
25:07 I think, you know, because if you start to
25:09 "Oh yeah, we're going to win Henley" because it's a very, very
25:11 difficult event to win. It's like the Wimbledon
25:13 of tennis, it's very difficult.
25:15 Of course, so what's the kind of
25:17 what does the club kind of look like at the moment? I know you've got
25:19 40 boats down there. We've got 40 boats
25:21 but, you know, we do need
25:23 the club obviously needs some money
25:25 you know, you can't
25:27 what is really sad
25:29 is that when we were talking about this last night
25:31 when we go to Henley, the schools
25:33 that are winning, you know, Eton
25:35 Radley, you know,
25:37 Heddington, they've got money
25:39 but you don't see any schools, or at least
25:41 very few schools from this part of the country
25:43 that are in the national schools, you know
25:45 regattas or winning Henley, and I think
25:47 that's really sad, and I think
25:49 they need to have some investment
25:51 whoever's the MP round here, they've got to do a better job than this
25:53 because there's no money going into sport
25:55 around Medway, they've got to sort it out.
25:57 George, you're a youngster
25:59 as part of this, do you think
26:01 this is something that people maybe leaving school
26:03 you know, around that age should be looking into?
26:05 Definitely, I think, you know, we used to have
26:07 Kent University come down
26:09 it's really suitable for
26:11 those ages, and you know
26:13 you make great friends doing it, so yeah.
26:15 Make great friends, that's the hope.
26:17 Okay, thank you both for joining us
26:19 very much, and all the best
26:21 for the future of this group. Thanks for having us, it's been a pleasure.
26:23 Thank you.
