Transcript
00:00 - How about another joke, Murray? - No, I think we've had enough of your jokes.
00:03 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most popular anticipated films
00:08 that are expected to do well in the next few years.
00:11 - The end of House Atreides. - Your father didn't believe in revenge.
00:14 Number 20. Megan 2.0.
00:19 - Do you remember how much you liked Bruce? I think you're gonna like Megan even more.
00:24 Released in the doldrums of January, Megan was able to transcend its notorious release month,
00:29 becoming a bona fide cultural phenomenon. Aided by excellent reviews and a strong presence on
00:34 social media, Megan grossed about $181 million on a $12 million budget. Therefore, it came as
00:41 no surprise when plans of a sequel were unveiled soon after. The tentative release date is January
00:47 17th, 2025, and many people are scheduled to return, including stars Alison Williams and
00:52 Violet McGraw. Even better, co-producer/writer James Wan claimed they "have an idea of where
00:58 they want to go" in the event of sequels. We can certainly envision a long future and potential
01:03 franchise should Megan 2.0 do well, which we bet it will.
01:07 - Megan, did you do something wrong? - Well, in order to answer that question,
01:13 you need to define the parameters. Number 19. Godzilla Kong. The New Empire.
01:18 - This world has more secrets than we could possibly imagine.
01:22 The monsterverse began back in 2014 with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla,
01:26 and has since encompassed several films and television shows. In the year of the franchise's
01:31 10th anniversary, Warner Bros. is releasing Godzilla Kong, The New Empire. This is the
01:37 direct sequel to 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong, which grossed roughly $470 million in the midst of the
01:44 COVID pandemic. The film will pit the titular monsters, quote, "against a colossal, undiscovered
01:50 threat hidden within our world," and is scheduled for release on March 29th, 2024.
01:56 COVID hindered Godzilla vs. Kong, likely preventing many people from seeing it on the big screen.
02:01 Well, we're sure folks will run to the biggest screen possible this time around.
02:05 This film deserves it. - Kong can't stop this on his own.
02:08 - He won't be alone. Number 18. A Quiet Place, Day One.
02:15 - Hey. - Hey. What was that?
02:18 John Krasinski completed his arc from TV actor to Hollywood superstar with A Quiet Place.
02:23 He co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film, which was made for a measly $17 million,
02:28 but which grossed a staggering $341 million. A Quiet Place Part II followed in 2020,
02:35 but had to contend with the COVID pandemic. Still, it managed to make nearly $300 million,
02:40 ensuring a spinoff prequel titled Day One. In it, we'll get a look at how the invasion
02:46 first unfolded, which also means meeting new players. The cast, notably, includes Lupita
02:51 Nyong'o, Alex Wolff, and Joseph Quinn, fresh off of his Stranger Things fame.
02:56 Look for the flick on June 28th, 2024.
02:59 Number 17. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. - When I sleep, I see strange things.
03:16 When it comes to trilogies, it's hard to beat the rebooted Planet of the Apes.
03:20 Very solid from start to finish, it was widely praised for its visual effects and surprising
03:25 emotional depth. It seemingly came to a satisfying end in 2017 with War for the Planet of the Apes,
03:31 but then Disney bought 20th Century Fox and began making plans for more films.
03:35 Enter Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which will be set 300 years after the events of War.
03:41 In a fresh and exciting twist, Kingdom will depict a thriving ape civilization,
03:46 with humans in a more wild and primitive state. We can't wait to see where that story goes.
03:51 Number 16. Civil War. - Pretty huge civil war going on all across America.
03:59 A24 has a very strong track record, and it looks to continue that with their most ambitious film
04:05 yet. Civil War will depict, well, a civil war in the near future of America, with a dictatorship
04:11 having thrown the country into extremist violence. The film is sure to contain some heavy and complex
04:17 themes regarding politics, war, and partisanship, but it will also bring the entertainment.
04:23 A great cast involving Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Mora, and Jesse Plemons are directed by Alex
04:28 Garland, who has helmed modern classics like Ex Machina and Annihilation.
04:32 On April 26, 2024, we may very well have a new classic on our hands.
04:38 - No, no, no, no, no!
04:39 God bless America. Number 15. Gladiator 2.
04:48 - Why are you not entertained? Gladiator was among the biggest films of 2000.
04:58 It was the second highest grossing movie of the year and took home five Oscars,
05:02 including Best Picture. Nearly a quarter of a century later, Ridley Scott is returning to
05:06 his classic world for a long-awaited follow-up. The story will follow Lucius Verus, Commodus'
05:11 nephew, on what's sure to be a riveting adventure. He's played by Paul Meskel, who will notably be
05:17 joined by the likes of Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, and Derek Jacobi as Gracchus.
05:23 Did we need a Gladiator sequel? Not really. Are we psyched we're getting one? Absolutely.
05:29 - Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance.
05:36 In this life or the next. Number 14. Ghostbusters. Frozen Empire.
05:41 - The first time in New York history, people froze to death in the middle of July.
05:47 In April 2022, Sony Pictures announced that they were making a sequel to Ghostbusters' afterlife.
05:53 Enter Frozen Empire, which will relocate the spooky supernatural action back to New York City.
05:59 That alone will be worth the price of admission, but there's more. The film will blend nostalgia
06:03 with the new, combining the cast from Afterlife with the old Ghostbusters and adding some original
06:09 characters played by stars like Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt. Even side characters from the
06:14 first film will make an appearance, including Annie Potts' Janine and William Atherton's Walter
06:18 Peck. Just like Ghostbustin', this film is sure to make us feel good.
06:27 Number 13. Inside Out 2. Pixar doesn't often return to their old classics,
06:36 but they're making an exception with Inside Out. Coming about nine years after the original,
06:40 this movie will feature a teenaged Riley and what is sure to be a flurry of hilarious,
06:45 touching, and complex emotions. She is a teen now, after all. The old characters will be mixed
06:51 with some brand new emotions, including anxiety played by Maya Hawke. The first Inside Out is
06:56 one of Pixar's most acclaimed films and grossed over $858 million at the box office. Provided it
07:03 gets good reviews, we can see Inside Out 2 crossing the billion threshold. And come on,
07:08 it's Pixar. It'll get good reviews. "Oh my gosh, I'm anxiety. Where can I put my stuff?"
07:13 "A new emotion! Wow!" Number 12. The Fall Guy.
07:18 "So how have you been?" "God, I hate that thumbs up stuff guy stuff."
07:23 2023 was not the best year for sequels and franchises, with many established names bombing.
07:29 In an age when franchises are struggling, it's becoming even harder for original films to make
07:34 their mark. But we have faith in The Fall Guy. This is based on an old TV show from the '80s,
07:39 but that doesn't really matter. What matters is that it looks like a ton of fun,
07:44 with an aging stuntman attempting to find a celebrity who has vanished.
07:47 The film will be headed by Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, both of whom are huge box office draws.
07:53 Coming fresh off Barbie, Gosling is sure to put butts in seats. Watching him flex his comedic
07:59 chops is just too enticing to pass up. "Why me?" "You're a stuntman. Nobody's
08:03 gonna notice you. That's your job. No offense." "I mean, some take it."
08:08 Number 11. Saw 11. "By no amount do these people deserve to be tested."
08:13 "That lady doctor deserves nothing." "Everyone deserves a chance."
08:18 Alright, now let's talk about the 11th entry in a 20-year-old franchise.
08:22 The original Saw was released in 2004, lighting the indie horror world on fire and kick-starting
08:28 a franchise that is still going strong to this day. 2023's Saw X was especially memorable,
08:35 grossing over $111 million and receiving wide praise from audiences and critics alike.
08:41 It's no surprise whatsoever that Lionsgate wants to keep this gravy train running.
08:45 In December 2023, barely three full months after the release of X, we learned that an 11th film
08:51 was in development and would be gracing our screens in 2024. Coming after the huge success of X,
08:57 expect more buckets of money and blood in September of the year.
09:04 Game over. Number 10. Minecraft.
09:07 Ever since its full release in 2011, Minecraft has completely dominated the gaming world.
09:18 With videos all over YouTube, it's gone on to sell over 300 million copies, making it the
09:24 best-selling video game of all time. Suffice it to say, the movie should do gangbusters.
09:30 Not only is Minecraft ridiculously popular, but video game movies are hot right now,
09:35 especially on the heels of the Super Mario Bros. movie and Five Nights at Freddy's.
09:39 Speaking of Mario, Jack Black will also be starring in the Minecraft film,
09:43 playing a character named Steve and continuing his dominance as a modern gaming legend.
09:48 There's just no way this movie will fail.
09:56 Number 9. Ballerina.
10:03 Speaking of things that are hot right now, John Wick couldn't be hotter. Chapter 4 became the
10:13 franchise's most lucrative entry with over $440 million earned and is widely regarded as a modern
10:20 action classic. So wouldn't you believe it, the universe is quickly expanding. With Peacock's
10:26 The Continental and now an upcoming spin-off titled Ballerina. It'll feature a dancer assassin
10:31 named Rooney, who briefly appeared in Chapter 3, and will now be played by Anna DeArmas.
10:36 Her star power will undoubtedly draw eyeballs, as will returning characters like Chiron,
10:41 Winston, and even John Wick himself. Kickstarting the summer 2024 season on June 7th,
10:47 Ballerina should dance circles around the competition.
10:50 You know when my pupils first come here, they wish for one thing, a life free of suffering.
10:56 Number 8. The Batman Part 2.
10:58 Batman is one of those characters who will never die. Just when we were perhaps getting a little
11:07 tired of him, in came Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves, both of whom helped bring the character
11:12 back to his gutsy roots. The Batman earned wide acclaim, grossed over $770 million and even
11:19 scored three Oscar nominations. There were always plans to make more Batman films, and its success
11:25 ensured that these plans moved forward. Indeed, the sequel was soon greenlit, and we know Pattinson
11:30 will be back on our screens as the Caped Crusader in 2025. Thanks to the critical and commercial
11:36 success of The Batman, we can see Part 2 improving on its box office performance and continuing
11:41 something of a renaissance for the character. "He's with me, officer." "Are you kidding me, sir?"
11:49 Number 7. Captain America - Brave New World. "And Sam, this has to be subtle." "Subtle, got it."
11:57 There's no denying that the MCU is struggling. With releases like the Marvels and Quantumania
12:03 populating 2023, there have certainly been stronger years for the acclaimed franchise.
12:08 But we have faith that its cultural dominance will return, and Brave New World will surely
12:14 help lead the charge. The fourth Captain America film and a direct sequel to The Falcon and the
12:18 Winter Soldier, it'll see the return of Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson. The Captain America name is
12:24 very popular, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is one of the MCU's best television
12:28 efforts. It should be enough to raise hype for Brave New World and inject some much-needed life
12:34 into a stagnating franchise. "So, a black Captain America, huh?" "Damn right."
12:41 Number 6. Furiosa - A Mad Max Saga. "However long it takes,
12:45 promise me you'll find your way home." Mad Max Fury Road was one of the biggest surprise hits
12:54 of 2015, earning widespread acclaim and being instantly regarded as a must-see action flick.
13:01 While it didn't light the box office on fire, it did well enough to warrant a prequel. Furiosa,
13:06 a Mad Max saga, will chronicle the early life of its titular heroine, who is now played by
13:11 Anya Taylor-Joy. Charlize Theron helped make the character a modern icon, and we can't wait to see
13:16 what Taylor-Joy brings to the table. Chris Hemsworth also joins the Mad Max universe as
13:21 Dementus, a warlord who kidnaps Furiosa. Plus, who can resist more of that signature Mad Max
13:27 carnage? Not us, we tell you. "The question is, do you have it in you to make it epic?"
13:37 Number 5. Dune - Part 2. "In the shadows of Arrakis lie many secrets,
13:42 but the darkest of them all may remain." Denis Villeneuve is arguably the greatest
13:48 science fiction director of our time, having helmed classics like Arrival and Blade Runner
13:53 2049. He eventually set his sights on what many consider to be the genre's magnum opus,
13:58 Frank Herbert's Dune. He did a bang-up job of the material with the 2021 movie,
14:03 beautifully adapting the first half of the book and getting viewers invested in what comes next.
14:08 What comes next is suitably Part 2, which is scheduled to hit screens on March 1st, 2024.
14:14 Given the pedigree of the novel and the success of the first film, we see Part 2 performing well
14:19 at the box office. Moviegoers are clamoring for a blockbuster, and Dune is here to deliver.
14:25 Number 4. Deadpool 3. "Anyway, I got places to be, a face to fix, and oh, bad guys to kill."
14:38 Captain America Brave New World will help save the MCU, but Deadpool 3 is leading the rescue
14:44 effort. This will be Deadpool's first film as a Marvel character, and as such, this will be
14:49 the first MCU movie to carry an R rating. That's certainly not the only draw to the film. Some
14:54 classic characters will also be returning to the big screen, including Hugh Jackman's Wolverine
14:59 and Jennifer Garner's Elektra, who hasn't been seen since her eponymous film nearly 20 years ago.
15:04 This is sure to be an enormous hit, given Deadpool's popularity and the return of Wolverine,
15:09 which has garnered a ton of hype. Just imagine going back 10 years and telling your younger
15:14 self that Deadpool would save the MCU. Exactly. What? But we did have one idea. Hey, Hugh,
15:20 you wanna play Wolverine one more time? Yeah, sure, Ryan.
15:25 Number 3. Joker. "Follie à deux." Uh, Murray, one small thing. Yeah. When you bring me out,
15:32 can you introduce me as Joker? 2019's Joker was a big success, surpassing a $1 billion gross and
15:39 earning Joaquin Phoenix his first Academy Award. It's no surprise a sequel is being made. But what
15:45 is surprising is how it's been made. This time, Arthur Fleck won't be on his own. As referenced
15:50 by the title, he's joined by a partner in crime, Lady Gaga's Harleen Quinzel, better known as Harley
15:57 Quinn. Furthermore, the movie will not be a conventional crime drama, but a musical. We have
16:02 to commend the creative risks being taken, and we think they'll add enough fresh elements to ensure
16:06 that fans return. If the movie is received well, and we're sure it will be, then it should easily
16:13 cross the billion mark. You just wanted to make fun of me. You're just like the rest of them.
16:19 Number 2. Wicked. "It is time to try defying gravity."
16:27 Musicals can be tough to capitalize on, with movies like West Side Story and In the Heights
16:31 getting great reviews but underperforming at the box office. Of course, those movies do not carry
16:37 the Wicked name. The record-breaking musical tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West
16:42 and is currently the second-highest-grossing play in Broadway history. Its legacy is undeniable,
16:48 and its popularity will help the movie adaptation make a major splash. The involvement of Ariana
16:53 Grande also helps, as her legion of followers will undoubtedly turn up to watch her play Galinda,
16:59 the first of a planned two-parter. This movie should make Wicked money. Excuse the pun.

17:24 Number 1 - Avatar 3
17:31 Move over, literally every other movie. Avatar 3 is coming through. After the earth-shattering
17:40 success of Avatar, some questioned if the sequel could deliver, especially as it came nearly 15
17:46 years after the original. Well, James Cameron quickly proved his doubters wrong, as The Way
17:51 of Water grossed over $2.3 billion and became the third-highest-grossing film ever, inflation
17:58 notwithstanding. Luckily, we won't have to wait as long for Avatar 3, as it was shot alongside
18:03 The Way of Water. In fact, we should see it on December 19, 2025, barring further delays.
18:09 Regardless, it's sure to be another cultural sensation. The only question left is,
18:15 can the series' third entry outdo its predecessors at the box office?
18:19 "I got this."
