00:00 "Post Malone?
00:02 Cedric?
00:03 Medieval people?
00:04 Johnny?
00:05 Dr. Galacalus?"
00:06 "Yes, I am."
00:08 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at Super Bowl commercials that spoofed movies
00:12 and TV shows.
00:13 "Better?"
00:14 "Much better."
00:15 Number 10.
00:17 MacGyver - MasterCard
00:19 MasterCard launched their priceless ad campaign during the 1997 World Series, creating a household
00:24 slogan.
00:25 Nearly a decade into the campaign, MasterCard was still coming up with clever scenarios
00:28 for the enduring ads.
00:30 One of the most inventive premiered during Super Bowl XL, recruiting Richard Dean Anderson
00:34 to make a comeback as Angus MacGyver.
00:36 "Tube sock, $4."
00:39 The script doesn't deviate from the usual formula, with the narrator listing various
00:42 items and how much they cost, leading to the priceless punchline.
00:45 "Paper clip, ballpoint pen, rubber band, tweezers, nasal spray, and a turkey baster, $14."
00:52 The inclusion of MacGyver adds another layer, though, emphasizing the importance of the
00:55 little things and how they can amount to something far more priceless in the long run.
00:58 Replicating the spirit of the show while maintaining the campaign's identity, every element merges
01:03 in a priceless fashion.
01:04 "There are some things money can't buy.
01:07 For everyday stuff, there's debit MasterCard."
01:09 Number 9.
01:10 Matthew's Day Off - Honda
01:12 The past decade or so has seen several actors reprise film roles for Super Bowl commercials.
01:16 It's debatable when this trend started, but we'd argue that this Ferris Bueller send-up
01:20 popularized the idea.
01:21 Twenty-five years after ditching school, Matthew Broderick calls in sick to work for his own
01:25 day off.
01:26 "He bought it."
01:27 While fans will appreciate callbacks to classic lines, scenes, and music cues, a few details
01:31 are tweaked.
01:32 Most notably, Broderick doesn't drive a Ferrari, presumably because the last one got wrecked.
01:36 "Just pack the things you have to do."
01:38 "But sometimes you gotta live a little."
01:40 Broderick also trades in the Chicago backdrop for L.A., running errands in a Honda CR-V.
01:45 It might not be a trailer for a sequel, as some assumed when the teaser dropped, but
01:49 it serves as a reminder of how fast life moves.
01:51 "Life moves pretty fast.
01:52 If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
01:56 Number 8.
01:57 Groundhog Day, Jeep
01:58 Any Bill Murray fan knows that February 2nd is Groundhog Day, or the day that ensnared
02:02 Phil Connors in a time loop.
02:03 In 2020, the Super Bowl and Groundhog Day aligned for the first time in 54 years.
02:08 "It's Groundhog Day!"
02:10 "Burn 'em."
02:11 Even Murray, who hasn't always been eager to reprise roles, saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime
02:15 opportunity.
02:17 Before Murray even appears on screen, we can sense what Sonny and Cher playing at 6 a.m.
02:21 is.
02:22 Brian Doyle Murray and Stephen Tobolowsky also return for this Jeep ad, kicking off
02:25 with several references to the 1993 comedy.
02:28 "Have we met?"
02:29 "You believe this guy?"
02:30 "About a hundred times."
02:32 At the same time, the commercial provides room for Murray to ad-lib, elevating it above
02:36 a nostalgic recreation.
02:37 For an ad based on a movie about repeating the same day, it's surprisingly fresh.
02:41 Number 7.
02:42 As Good as the Original, Mountain Dew
02:44 Bryan Cranston is no stranger to the Super Bowl, bringing back Walter White for East
02:48 Sherwin's and Popcorner's commercials.
02:49 "These are the bomb!"
02:50 "And they're air-popped, not fried."
02:53 Cranston might not have played Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
02:56 If Stephen King's book was adapted today, though, casting Cranston would make too much
03:00 sense.
03:01 We'll gladly settle for this Mountain Dew ad, which also casts Tracey Ellis Ross in
03:04 the Wendy role.
03:05 While Ross is appropriately terrified, Cranston's performance is where parody, homage, and the
03:09 real deal intersect.
03:11 Cranston is having a ball, but we imagine he'd play Jack exactly like this, be it in
03:15 a movie or a commercial.
03:16 "Here's Mountain Dew Zero!"
03:19 "I am thirsty."
03:21 Cranston brings a legitimate creep factor, although when he pops up as the Grady twins,
03:25 we're reminded that this is supposed to be funny.
03:28 "Come drink new Mountain Dew Zero sugar with us."
03:31 Number 6.
03:32 Crocodile Dundee - Tourism Australia
03:34 Hollywood will reboot and revive any franchise these days.
03:38 So when Danny McBride appeared in a Super Bowl commercial as Crocodile Dundee's son,
03:42 we thought, "Yeah, that sounds on-brand."
03:44 "That's not a knife.
03:46 That's a knife."
03:47 Instead, we found it strange that we hadn't heard about a fourth Crocodile Dundee movie
03:50 up until this point.
03:51 Also, last we checked, Paul Hogan's character named his son Mikey, not Brian.
03:55 Slowly but surely, the audience and McBride realized that something doesn't add up.
03:59 "Okay, and when my dad told me about this, he was just like, 'Yeah, I just came up,
04:02 and you did this, okay?'"
04:04 As Chris Hemsworth goes on about the wonders of Australia, it hits everybody that this
04:08 isn't a trailer, but a tourism commercial.
04:10 Although it should have been obvious in retrospect, this parody is so well-crafted that you can't
04:14 fault us for interpreting it as an actual movie.
04:16 Now that's a fake-out.
04:17 "You're the best Crocodile Dundee since Crocodile Dundee."
04:20 "Really?"
04:21 "Yes, really."
04:22 "And we have-"
04:23 5.
04:24 How do you drive with scissorhands?
04:25 Cadillac
04:26 Two years before filling in for Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, Timothee Chalamet put his
04:29 spin on Edward Scissorhands.
04:31 More specifically, Chalamet stars as Edgar Scissorhands, the son of Edward and Kim, once
04:35 again played by Winona Ryder.
04:41 Like his father, Edgar is presented with the dilemma of not being able to embrace what
04:44 he loves most.
04:45 Of course, in Edgar's case, it isn't a woman, but a car that he wishes to hold.
04:49 Not even the inventor who gave Edward life could imagine a future with hands-free driver
04:53 assistance.
04:54 "Go ahead, try it."
04:55 It may be a Cadillac commercial, but it's almost eerie how well this ad matches the
05:03 humor and even the heart of Tim Burton's film.
05:05 So much so that we're willing to call this canon.
05:07 "Don't worry.
05:08 He still makes it home in time for dinner.
05:11 Occasionally."
05:12 4.
05:13 Bud Light Legends
05:14 The Portal scene from Avengers Endgame was such a zeitgeist moment that it was bound
05:18 to be parodied.
05:19 By 2021, you'd think that every joke would have been exhausted, but Bud Light caught
05:22 us off guard.
05:23 In a world where Bud Light has mysteriously vanished from store shelves, it'll take several
05:27 heroes to restore order.
05:29 Bud Light has a history of memorable ads, although it wasn't until this commercial that we realized
05:33 just how many legends the brand has inspired.
05:35 "All right, Bud Light Legends.
05:38 Let's do this."
05:39 From Dr. Galakowicz to the Real Men of Genius singer, everybody other than Spuds McKenzie
05:43 is present.
05:44 Sadly, the Bud Knight makes a Tony Stark-esque sacrifice.
05:47 "High five!"
05:48 "You got it."
05:50 Ironically, this isn't the first time that a mountain marked his downfall.
05:53 At least the dragon didn't finish him off.
05:56 3.
05:57 Marilyn Defoe - Snickers
05:59 In 1955, a Subway great, a white dress, and a blonde bombshell created an iconic movie
06:04 moment.
06:05 "Subway?
06:06 Isn't it delicious?"
06:12 It further cemented Marilyn Monroe as one of the most lovable screen presences in cinematic
06:15 history.
06:16 Behind the scenes, Monroe wasn't always the easiest star to work with.
06:19 We doubt that his Snickers would have been the solution to every problem, but the candy
06:23 bar does manage to exercise Monroe's inner Willem Defoe.
06:26 "Sweetheart, don't look at me like that.
06:28 It's gonna be amazing."
06:29 Like previous entries in the "You're Not You and You're Hungry" campaign, the success
06:33 of this commercial boils down to finding Monroe's opposite.
06:36 "Miss Monroe, eat a Snickers.
06:38 You get a little cranky when you're hungry."
06:39 Snickers struck gold with Defoe, and having Eugene Levy deliver the final zinger doesn't
06:44 hurt.
06:45 "This scene will never make the cut.
06:47 Morons."
06:48 Now that Defoe has played Marilyn, maybe he should take on the creature from the Black
06:51 Lagoon next.
06:52 2.
06:53 The Force - Volkswagen
06:54 At some point in childhood, we all tried using the Force.
06:57 Some of us even dressed up as Darth Vader while doing so.
07:01 This viral Volkswagen commercial captures the innocence of playtime while making it
07:06 feel epic thanks to the musical accompaniment of John Williams' score.
07:09 The little Sith Lord is played by six-year-old Max Page, who at the time had yet to see a
07:13 Star Wars movie.
07:18 Although Page is hidden behind a mask, we can imagine the frustration on his face as
07:22 he attempts to summon the Force.
07:24 It appears futile until he directs his midichlorians towards his father's Volkswagen, which roars
07:28 to life with the press of a button.
07:33 As far as the boy knows, though, the Force is strong with him.
07:36 Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
07:39 Not so clueless.
07:40 Rakuten - Tech changes, but some things never go out of style.
07:47 Jeep Jurassic - Jeep.
07:48 Of all the Jurassic Park survivors, Ian Malcolm would be the most likely to go commercial.
07:55 Cable Guy - Version.
07:56 If anyone can bring cable back, it's Jim Carrey.
08:04 The Truth - Kia K900
08:06 Come on, if Lawrence Fishburne returned for this, you could have put him in Matrix Resurrections.
08:33 Castaway - FedEx Castaway was the best free advertising
08:37 that FedEx could have asked for.
08:38 Naturally inspiring a commercial three years later, like Tom Hanks' Chuck Noland, a fellow
08:42 Castaway fulfills his goal to deliver a mysterious package after escaping from a desert island.
08:52 While the film chooses to keep the contents vague, it's revealed here that our hero had
08:55 the tools for survival and rescue all along.
08:57 The FedEx worker attempts to stay composed, but on the inside, those five lost years are
09:01 hitting him like a smorm of volleyballs.
09:04 Where most parody commercials settle for hitting familiar beats, this one plays off the source
09:07 material in inspired ways.
09:12 Castaway left us all asking what was in the package, and this provided the funniest answer
09:17 possible.
