00:00 You got your mouthpiece now?
00:01 All right, gentlemen, you received the instructions
00:03 in the dressing room.
00:04 Know what I expect?
00:05 A good, clean fight.
00:06 [ Speaking Spanish ]
00:08 Legal punches, golpes legales, here for you.
00:11 Legal punches, here for you.
00:12 Touch gloves, look to both of you.
00:13 [ Speaking Spanish ]
00:15 -Lightweight fight between George Acosta
00:19 and René Tellez-Girón.
00:21 Acosta, a fighter who was diagnosed
00:25 with a microadenoma that almost derailed his career.
00:29 He was finally cleared to fight,
00:31 and he says, "That's why I'm such a technical fighter,
00:33 because I know that I can't take punishment
00:36 to that certain area around the pituitary gland."
00:39 -Box!
00:40 -And here he is, looking for his 18th professional win.
00:44 A student at Fullerton College
00:45 wants to transfer to a UC or a Cal State
00:50 to study kinesiology,
00:52 and René Tellez-Girón, well, he's a veteran, Tim,
00:54 who just comes forward and loves to fight.
00:57 -I remember his fight with Baldaris.
00:59 -Yep.
01:00 -You know, not many gave him an opportunity or a chance.
01:03 He got the opportunity.
01:04 He landed a perfect shot on Baldaris,
01:06 dropped him, floored him, and actually beat him.
01:10 Haven't seen him in a while.
01:12 -Baldaris and Girón.
01:14 -Haven't seen him in a while.
01:15 Acosta, like you said, is a boxer.
01:19 Doesn't like to fight too much with his heart.
01:21 Likes to fight with his mind.
01:23 I respect it.
01:25 He says that, you know, in the fighter minions,
01:27 after speaking to him, he said that, you know,
01:29 that's the reason why I'm able to do what I do,
01:31 and that's the reason why I'm undefeated
01:33 is because a lot of these guys
01:35 have a hard time with my boxing ability.
01:38 And he said, "Girón's gonna have a hard time
01:40 dealing with my skills tonight."
01:42 -You know why you haven't seen a lot of Girón?
01:44 Because he's been undependable when it comes to making weight.
01:47 For that fight against Giovanni Cabrera,
01:48 he missed weight by 4 pounds,
01:50 and in his last four fights,
01:52 he's missed weight by at least 3 pounds.
01:54 So you can't depend on a fighter like that.
01:57 So promoters shy away from bringing him up,
02:00 but now he's got a good test against Giorgio Acosta.
02:03 Nice left uppercut from Acosta.
02:08 He's starting to open up.
02:09 You know, starting with that jab,
02:20 he's sparred with Fitbull crews in the past.
02:23 Also Bandido Vargas, former world champion.
02:27 Been in several fight of the years before.
02:29 Nice stiff jab from Giron.
02:34 More boxing from Giron in this first round.
02:38 -Girón's sneaky.
02:40 He'll lure you in. He'll get you comfortable,
02:42 and then all of a sudden, he'll explode with that left hook.
02:44 You see him setting it up.
02:47 See him step in the mid-range
02:50 and unleashing the left hook.
02:51 -Acosta right now just standing still in spots.
02:55 I mean, if he get on his jab
02:57 and really get consistent with it,
02:59 he'll be able to slow down some of that offense from Giron.
03:02 Giron right there just taking advantage of Acosta's mistake.
03:11 He jabbed, and he fell in after his jab.
03:15 A fundamental mistake right there from him,
03:17 and Giron saw it, has enough experience,
03:19 and set him up for a beautiful uppercut.
03:20 -Cuidado con la cabeza, René. Cuidado con la cabeza.
03:24 -Good jab. -Stiff jab from Acosta.
03:26 -Real good. Real good. Real good jab right there.
03:29 -4-inch reach advantage for Acosta.
03:31 Tell us, Giron has been able to overcome early in this fight.
03:35 Seven more rounds still to fight here in Las Vegas,
03:39 Nevada, between Acosta and Tellez.
03:41 Giron, tonight's main event in Las Vegas
03:44 will feature Tio Fimo Lopez against Jermaine Ortiz.
03:48 The referee is Harvey Dock,
03:50 and this will be his 33rd world title fight.
03:53 Cambosis Jr. and Nakatani,
03:54 those are the fights that he's been in the ring with
03:57 when Tio Fimo Lopez fights,
03:58 and other notable fights on his docket
04:00 are Canelo against Charlo, Crawford Spence,
04:03 and Haney Lomachenko.
04:06 Two of those went the distance.
04:08 All right, the judges for this evening
04:10 feature Tim Cheatham in his 55th world title fight,
04:13 David Sutherland just two fights behind him in that rank,
04:17 but he's got the first time he's judging a Lopez fight,
04:21 and Steve Weisfeld has judged both Lopez and Ortiz
04:26 in fights that they've won.
04:29 So that's your breakdown of the other people
04:32 who will be involved in the fight tonight
04:35 in the main event besides Tio Fimo Lopez and Jermaine Ortiz.
04:39 -Box. -Good crew, by the way.
04:41 -Good crew. Great crew.
04:43 Great group of judges.
04:45 -A lot of experience, not only in that,
04:47 but Harvey Dogg, who is a New York judge
04:49 but has been making his way over to Vegas for the mega fights.
04:53 -Absolutely.
04:55 -Inside the ring, we've got George Acosta
05:01 in the white, red, and green trunks,
05:04 and we got Renete Yeziron in the 49er trunks.
05:10 -You see the elusiveness and the athleticism from Yeziron
05:16 staying low, really making his target,
05:18 shrinking his target area, exploding up with shots,
05:23 throwing punches at unexpected times
05:26 from different and odd angles.
05:28 That's what he brings into the ring.
05:29 That's why he's been successful in the ring.
05:32 You see that shot right there?
05:33 You wouldn't expect him to go down the way he was
05:35 and be from that position and actually come up
05:37 with a left hook.
05:39 -Those awkward angles that he throws punches from,
05:41 you're not expecting those.
05:42 He's very unorthodox, and it works for him.
05:44 -Extremely unconventional.
05:48 And being unconventional
05:50 sometimes against a conventional fighter,
05:52 you're able to have success.
05:54 Look at Navarrete. He's one of those guys.
05:56 -Nice body work from Acosta
06:08 as he tries to land an uppercut.
06:10 -He's not making Acosta think a lot.
06:12 -Well, it's his head movement.
06:14 He's so elusive in there.
06:15 He's not all the time in just one place.
06:18 He's not just a come-forward fighter.
06:21 He changes angles.
06:23 He slips under. You see how he slips under?
06:25 He uses his feet to create advantageous positions
06:28 for himself, and again, he can throw from odd angles

18:53 -So what the referees are looking for,
18:54 they're looking for the hurt fighter.
18:57 They're seeing how he's reacting.
18:59 They actually want you to hold.
19:01 They want you to tie up.
19:03 They want to see that you have cognitive thinking
19:07 going on when you get hurt.
19:11 So they don't mind the tie up.
19:13 That's what they're looking for.
19:14 They're looking for that.
19:16 -More body work from Heron.
19:19 -And that's a big round for the fighter from Querétaro, Mexico.
19:25 -Acosta seemed to have his wits about him.
19:27 -He does. -Red corner headbutt.
19:29 -Oh, and now a headbutt causes a cut
19:32 on the side of the head of Acosta.
19:36 -10 segundos para la campana.
19:40 [ Bell dings ]
19:41 -We'll listen in to the corner of George Acosta
19:44 and see what Jeff Floetry has to say to him.
19:47 -Times we've talked about
19:51 that it's not a boxing match anymore.
19:55 Hey, remember how we talked about that?
19:58 This is that fucking time, okay?
20:00 This is not a boxing match anymore.
20:02 The crowd's behind him.
20:03 -Let's take a look at the knockdown
20:04 that was a great setup shot from Heron.
20:08 -Absolutely.
20:10 You see Acosta here shooting a jab again from mid-range.
20:15 You see the reaction right here,
20:16 but look at the position that you see Heron in.
20:19 Squared up in a squared-up position,
20:21 was able to generate enough power,
20:23 catching Acosta with a punch he didn't see.
20:27 Right on the button.
20:29 And that's what put him on the canvas.
20:30 -Ooh. -Caught his attention.
20:33 Again, sometimes it's the punches
20:36 that you don't see at most times that hurt you.
20:40 -Thanks. -Acosta definitely
20:42 did not see that. -Never saw it.
20:44 -Let's take a look at the power punches by round here,
20:46 according to CompuBox.
20:48 And you're gonna see Heron dominated that fifth round
20:52 with 23 power punches landed.
20:55 That's almost a third of all the power punches
20:58 he's landed in the fight.
21:00 23 of 68.
21:01 -Watch your hands. [ Speaking Spanish ]
21:04 -Acosta only beyond double digits in that fourth round,
21:07 so he's gonna have to dig deep.
21:08 And his trainer, Jeff Floetry, says,
21:10 "Look, remember we talked about, you know, boxing matches before
21:13 and how you're not gonna box.
21:15 Well, tonight is that night when you have to go to war."
21:17 -Yeah, where they also talked about
21:19 keeping their distance in boxing from the outside
21:22 and taking as least damage as possible.
21:24 -And he did not allow for that, though.
21:26 -No, he didn't allow.
21:27 Actually, Heron was actually out boxing from the outside.
21:32 With his creativity and instincts,
21:34 natural instincts inside the ring.
21:36 A lot of stuff he's doing in there
21:37 and throwing punches like that, that's not normal.
21:40 It's not normal.
21:42 From those positions that he's letting his hands go from.
21:45 [ Crowd shouting ]
21:47 -That's body work against from the seat on him.
21:50 There was a warning for a low blow.
21:51 -Nice feint, too. -And that left hook, too.
21:53 -Yeah, he set it up off a feint, too.
21:55 He feinted Acosta.
21:59 So it's little small, little subtle things
22:01 that Heron is doing in there
22:05 that's really allowing him to break down Acosta.
22:09 [ Crowd shouting ]
22:13 -Ooh, uppercut on the inside.
22:17 There's another uppercut from Heron.
22:19 [ Crowd shouting ]
22:22 There's that body shot from Heron.
22:26 [ Speaking Spanish ]
22:30 -Warnings for headbutts from the referee.
22:33 Bloody nose of Heron.
22:35 -Stop!
22:37 -Here we go. -Box.
22:39 [ Crowd shouting ]
22:44 -Overhand right from Acosta.
22:46 -As Kido starts to break down a little bit, Tim,
22:49 he's lunging a lot more.
22:51 -Well, he's trying to. He's attempting to.
22:53 He's trying to knock him out. That's why.
22:55 I mean, he's taking more risks.
22:57 He's trying to land that kill shot,
22:58 and again, sometimes you can get beside yourself,
23:02 especially when you produce a knockout.
23:06 -Stop! Break!
23:07 -Sometimes a knockdown -- -When you produce a knockdown.
23:09 -Excuse me. -Throws you off your game
23:10 because now you think you're a puncher all of a sudden.
23:15 And he stops doing everything he was doing.
23:17 -Yeah, I mean, you're right, but what was he doing?
23:21 Think about it. What was he doing?
23:23 What he's doing now.
23:25 -Yeah, but he was using more angles, to be honest.
23:27 I mean, now he's a straightforward fighter,
23:30 but tonight, one of the reasons Teofimo Lopez
23:34 is taking on Jermaine Ortiz
23:36 is it's his first world title shot.
23:38 He's never been on the stage before,
23:39 and Teofimo Lopez is not looking past that.
23:42 -Peace.
23:43 -I don't see this fight going the distance.
23:48 I don't.
23:49 I faced Jermaine Ortiz before, and I'm not overlooking him.
23:53 However, I just know there's certain things
23:55 that certain fighters have,
23:56 and there's just things that certain fighters,
23:58 you need to have as a champion, and he doesn't have that.
24:01 He doesn't have that champion heart,
24:03 and I'm gonna press him on it come that night.
24:06 It's a good turnaround for me, man.
24:08 I think it's now that I get to really, like,
24:11 revision everything and how I really want to
24:14 take this next chapter of my life.
24:18 Jermaine Ortiz, I'm not going to overlook him at all.
24:22 Regardless what that other side is doing,
24:25 I got to stay focused on what I'm doing.
24:26 It's me versus me.
24:28 Every time I go out there and I fight,
24:30 every time I go out there and train,
24:31 I'm focusing on how do I beat myself.
24:35 Jermaine Ortiz is a decorated fighter,
24:37 knows how to fight, but this is a different time,
24:40 and this kid is gonna feel the magnitude of this.
24:44 It's me against me.
24:47 Yeah? >> What do you think of that?
24:48 >> Every single day, that's what I say to myself.
24:50 I get up in the morning, brush my teeth,
24:51 and I say, "Hey, how can I be the best version
24:54 of myself today?"
24:55 Absolutely.
24:57 You can be your own enemy and slow yourself down.
25:01 So, yes, it's you against you, no doubt about it.
25:04 And you have all your supporting cast around you,
25:07 which is your family and your loved ones,
25:08 and also your die-hard fans.
25:11 >> There you go.
25:12 Spoken by a hall of famer.
25:15 Round seven, Giron dropped Acosta in round five.
25:21 And they're going into war here in the last few rounds.
25:26 About five minutes left in this fight
25:27 for Acosta to turn it around.
25:30 >> Acosta's trying to get himself back into this fight.
25:33 And he's fighting more than actually using his brain,
25:42 what God has given him.
25:44 It's a different style.
25:48 I'm not sure if he's accustomed to using this style
25:50 and fighting inside the pocket.
25:53 But as of right now, when he's out at distance
25:56 and he's letting combinations go, he has success.
26:00 You know, it's just when he allows Giron
26:03 to slip in the inside without making him pay
26:06 and getting down to his body
26:08 and roughing him up on the inside,
26:10 that's when he runs into problems.
26:13 >> I mean, Acosta's jab has been pretty effective here
26:16 in the seventh round,
26:17 but he's still fighting away inside.
26:19 >> But see, this is a low point for Giron right now.
26:23 And you as a fighter, you have to sense it.
26:25 You have to sense that.
26:28 And so if I'm Acosta, I'm letting my hands go
26:30 a little bit more and I'm pushing forward,
26:32 trying to dictate the pace to be able to try
26:35 to win these last few rounds.
26:39 >> Great work there from Raul Caiz Jr.
26:41 saying, "Hey, let his hands go and work out of it."
26:46 A lot of headbutt action here between these two fighters.
26:49 That's a concern for Raul Caiz.
26:51 Nice body work from Acosta,
26:53 but Giron just has no quit in him.
26:55 He's going to keep coming after you.
26:57 >> No, not at all.
26:58 He might have been sitting back playing possum,
27:00 mouth is open a bit.
27:03 But he's a fighter, a true fighter through and through.
27:05 Both these fighters are, honestly.
27:08 They are.
27:09 I mean, being knocked down and being in land shots like that
27:12 and still be available, recovering,
27:16 and still trying to win.
27:18 >> There's another straight right hand from Acosta.
27:21 Again, not at range.
27:25 >> So that gives more credence to just how Giron
27:28 controlled the early part of this fight,
27:30 by just getting on the inside.
27:32 >> Yeah.
27:33 >> And dictating through the first five rounds.
27:35 Ooh, nice left hook there from Giron.
27:37 >> Listen for that bell.
27:38 >> Yeah, Acosta needs to know that he's never safe
27:41 in any moment.
27:42 He's never safe, and he needs to make sure he plays
27:46 homage to defense after his offense.
27:50 >> Let's listen in to the corner.
27:52 >> We go to the eighth and final round.
27:55 [speaking Spanish]
27:58 >> You think you're winning this?
28:00 Come on, you gotta use both hands.
28:04 You gotta keep turning them.
28:05 You gotta go hurt them.
28:08 This is the last round, come on.
28:12 Cover yourself on defense.
28:14 [speaking Spanish]
28:17 >> Don't tell me about it.
28:20 Fucking do it, okay?
28:22 This is all you.
28:24 You're capable of doing this, okay?
28:26 You're capable.
28:27 Believe in yourself.
28:28 Go get this guy.
28:30 Stop him.
28:32 >> The urgency in the corner from Jeff Loach retelling
28:35 Georgia Acosta, "You gotta go stop this guy.
28:37 You gotta want him."
28:39 You gotta be honest.
28:40 >> Yeah.
28:41 >> Yeah, I always say how.
28:44 So what people always ask, "Well, how he do it, Jim?
28:48 How can he do it?"
28:49 Same thing you being a coach.
28:53 >> He don't have landed 13 more punches than Acosta has,
28:56 and they're right around the 30% mark.
28:59 But the damaging punches have been in favor of Hiron.
29:02 >> Yes.
29:03 The more eye-catching punches have been.
29:05 >> And that knockdown in that fifth round,
29:07 we can't forget that.
29:08 >> Yes.
29:13 >> All that wrestling and tussling and grappling,
29:15 that stuff tires you out, man.
29:17 Tires you out.
29:19 You know what I used to do?
29:20 My dad used to make me push the car in the parking lot
29:25 to be able to deal with that.
29:27 >> Was that a hoopty?
29:28 >> It was a hoopty.
29:29 >> Those are heavy, man.
29:31 Made out of metal.
29:33 >> You push that thing, man.
29:35 >> Not these plastic cars we got nowadays.
29:37 >> No, that a hoopty.
29:39 >> Oh, look at that headbutt from Hiron.
29:41 >> You know it.
29:43 >> Box.
29:45 >> It's a veteran move,
29:46 sticking your head underneath the chin of your opponent.
29:49 Another veteran.
29:50 >> You never did that, did you, Tim?
29:51 >> Every now and then, my big old head would get in the way.
29:54 I was top-heavy.
29:55 What you expect?
29:56 I had little bitty legs.
29:57 I was like built, like a penitentiary or something.
30:01 Small legs, no leg day.
30:04 Big upper body with a big head, of course.
30:07 There's gonna be head clashes.
30:11 >> No leg day, Tim.
30:13 [ Laughter ]
30:14 >> I love it.
30:17 I can't say anything.
30:18 I got this skinny legs.
30:20 Here's what it is.
30:21 >> Got the bird legs.
30:22 >> Looks like I'm walking on them.
30:25 >> That last round, that last round,
30:31 Hiron might have took off.
30:33 Very energetic this round.
30:36 He knows it's the last round.
30:39 The end is near.
30:41 >> And his corner set about to try to finish this fight.
30:46 >> And he's trying to bank this round.
30:47 He can pull off a knockout.
30:49 >> Rene, stop.
30:52 Here we go.
30:53 Here we go.
30:54 Box.
30:55 >> You look across the ring, and you would say,
30:59 "Which guy's gonna win," right?
31:02 Most people would have said Acosta.
31:03 And guess who I think is ahead here.
31:06 It's Rene Tellez-Hiron.
31:07 He's just been nonstop, active from round one.
31:11 Made Acosta fight his fight from the get-go.
31:14 >> Yep.
31:15 >> And now it's a punishing fight
31:17 between these two fighters.
31:18 Both want to finish, and both are getting really sloppy.
31:21 And that's a dangerous proposition.
31:23 Look at that.
31:24 >> [ Laughs ]
31:25 Heads are gonna clash again.
31:26 Be careful.
31:28 Hiron is just a fighter, man.
31:33 He don't care how he did it.
31:34 He just want to get it.
31:36 >> Told you. Head clash on the way.
31:37 >> Box.
31:38 [ Bell dings ]
31:39 >> Careful.
31:40 >> All right.
31:41 The fight is over for now,
31:45 and we will see what happens with the judges.
31:49 But we remind you that at 10:30 Eastern, 7:30 Pacific,
31:53 we're moving over to ESPN for our main card,
31:57 featuring Keyshawn Davis
31:59 fighting against former world champion Jose Pedraza.
32:03 And then in the main event, it'll be Tiofimo Lopez
32:05 defending his belt against Jermaine Ortiz.
32:07 This is what we saw tonight
32:09 between Acosta and Teyes Hidoncho.
32:12 >> Yeah, some good action, some back-and-forth action,
32:15 some sloppy boxing.
32:17 However, you know, Hiron,
32:20 I think he did enough to win tonight.
32:22 You know, Acosta, I thought,
32:24 was gonna bring a little bit more to the table.
32:26 Really had a hard time finding his rhythm.
32:28 This is the big knockdown right here from Hiron.
32:31 Just punching from position, squared-up position,
32:34 catching him by surprise in the inside.
32:38 But I have to say, I do appreciate the heart
32:40 and determination of Acosta.
32:43 You know, never giving up, staying the course,
32:46 still trying to win in the end.
32:47 But Hiron, again, the experienced veteran fighter,
32:55 I think, won this fight tonight.
32:56 >> Those are the total CompuBox numbers
32:59 that you see Hidon with about a 23-punch
33:03 landed advantage, and then the body shot, 62-39.
33:06 Very telling.
33:07 Let's go to Mark Chinook with the official decision.
33:11 >> Ladies and gentlemen, after eight rounds
33:13 here inside Michelob Ultra Arena,
33:15 we go to the judges' scorecards for the official decision.
33:18 Dave Moretti scores the bout 79-72.
33:25 Eric Cheek scores the bout 78-73.
33:29 And Steve Weisfeld has it 76-75.
33:34 All in favor of your winner by unanimous decision.
33:38 Rene "El Bravo" Tellez-Hiron!
33:46 >> So Tellez-Hiron comes away with the unanimous decision
33:50 victory right here in Las Vegas, Nevada.
33:54 It's big game weekend,
33:57 And boy, do we have a big fight for you right here on ESPN.
