00:00 - When it comes to taking a trip,
00:02 you may be thinking about Europe or a cruise,
00:06 but what you might forget is that Arizona
00:08 has some amazing places to visit
00:10 that are only a road trip away.
00:12 Rachel Harris is here to share one of those places today.
00:15 Welcome, Rach.
00:16 I'm so glad you're here.
00:18 - Thank you.
00:18 I love it when I get to put my Arizona shirt back on.
00:21 - I love it.
00:22 - Me too.
00:22 I am back on the road hitting Arizona destinations,
00:26 which I found that my blog readers love
00:29 because it's affordable.
00:30 So today I'm taking you to Winslow, Arizona.
00:33 Ever been there?
00:34 - I haven't.
00:34 No, I'm so excited to hear all about it.
00:36 - Yeah, it's a big historic town.
00:38 It's a little, I mean a little town that's very historic,
00:41 but we'll start off.
00:42 I brought a couple of reasons
00:44 why folks should check out Winslow.
00:47 I'm calling this Why Visit Winslow?
00:49 First of all, it's only a three hour drive from Phoenix.
00:52 Nice and easy.
00:53 - Super easy.
00:54 - Budget friendly getaway,
00:55 which is why I love the Arizona road trips
00:57 'cause it's gonna cost less
00:58 than if you go out of state.
01:00 And it's also got that famous standing on the corner
01:03 that we'll talk about that in just a bit.
01:05 I brought a video, you know, the Eagle Song.
01:07 - Love it.
01:08 - And then also this gorgeous hotel, very historic.
01:11 The La Posada Hotel is there.
01:13 Charming, historic railroad trackside hotel.
01:16 We're gonna talk about that.
01:17 The town and hotel is rich in Arizona railroad
01:21 and Route 66 history.
01:23 And if you're a train buff, which my family loves trains,
01:27 you gotta know about this town.
01:28 - Okay, this all sounds so cool.
01:30 Not necessarily a train buff,
01:32 but I do know that Eagle Song.
01:33 So let's talk a little bit about it.
01:34 - Yeah, so let's do it.
01:35 So let's dive in with that.
01:36 So if we can roll the first video of my trip to Winslow.
01:40 And one thing I love about when you first get into Winslow
01:44 is check out the billboard.
01:45 Just jump out of your car, take a picture,
01:47 'cause it lists all the places to see while you're there.
01:50 All right, the famous standing on the corner,
01:53 that famous song.
01:54 Can you sing a little line?
01:55 ♪ So the standing on the corner in Winslow ♪
01:58 ♪ Arizona ♪
01:58 You know the song, right? - That's great.
02:00 - So that is a very popular street corner
02:03 because of that song.
02:04 So people will go for the day, get their pictures.
02:07 You know, that was written by the Eagles,
02:10 Glenn Fry and Jackson Brown.
02:11 So there's sculptures of the musicians.
02:14 And also there's another line in the song
02:17 about the flatbed Ford truck.
02:19 There it is.
02:20 You can get your photo op with that as well.
02:23 And Winslow is all about, like the sign says,
02:26 taking it easy.
02:27 - That's great.
02:28 Oh, that's so fun, Rach.
02:30 I love this.
02:30 I would love to go hang out there.
02:32 It's so cool.
02:33 - Okay, well, here's a cool surprise.
02:35 Go ahead and stay the night
02:36 because there's an amazing hotel there
02:38 called the La Posada Hotel.
02:40 And if we can roll that video.
02:42 So this hotel is extra special
02:45 because it was built in 19, opened in 1930.
02:50 It's one of the last great Fred Harvey
02:52 Santa Fe Railway hotels.
02:55 And it was situated, it is situated
02:57 between the Santa Fe Railroad and Route 66.
03:01 And now the railroad is the BNSF,
03:03 but back in the day, it was that railroad.
03:05 This hotel was designed by Mary Jane Coulter.
03:08 She's one of the great Southwestern architects.
03:10 And she designed the hotel, the gardens,
03:13 the furniture, everything back in 1929.
03:16 Quite a feat, especially for a woman.
03:19 And check it out, all through the hotel,
03:20 there's little historic pieces and tidbits.
03:23 That's the Harvey girls.
03:24 And she made sure they had aprons
03:26 that were bright and colorful for the Harvey houses
03:29 where folks would get off the train
03:30 and go in to eat, take a break.
03:32 - Okay, my husband would have us there all day
03:35 just reading those historical little tidbits.
03:38 Like, that is such a beautiful hotel,
03:40 but yeah, I would get stuck there
03:41 with him reading all of that historical stuff.
03:43 And I'd wanna go walk around and explore,
03:45 but it's perfect for both history buffs
03:47 and people who wanna just enjoy the beauty.
03:48 - And I love that 'cause you learn about your state.
03:50 So let's do a little more footage at the La Posada Hotel
03:54 because it's sort of an art gallery as well.
03:57 So check out the art.
03:58 The artist is actually one of the owners,
04:01 Alan Affelt and his wife, Tina Mion.
04:03 She's the artist.
04:05 They actually, oh, check that out,
04:06 Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan's eyes.
04:08 I love that piece.
04:09 Her oil pastels are gorgeous.
04:11 But this couple actually saved the hotel.
04:14 It had closed in 1957 after 27 glory years.
04:18 And then it was taken over by the railway.
04:21 It was gutted.
04:22 Thank goodness for this couple.
04:23 In '87, they restored it, opened it back up to the public.
04:27 They were able to get their hands
04:28 on some of the original furnishings.
04:30 Everything is handcrafted from ceiling to floor.
04:34 It is quite the property to walk through and check it out.
04:37 Lots of celebrities through the years stayed at the hotel
04:41 and they've got the wall of fame there.
04:43 I see Bob Hope and Clark Gable.
04:46 So that is another really interesting tidbit
04:49 about the La Posada.
04:50 - How cool, Rach.
04:51 This sounds like an amazing adventure.
04:54 - It is, you gotta definitely check it out.
04:56 All right, do we have time for another one?
04:57 - I don't know.
04:58 I think can we, no, we'll save it for you guys.
05:01 You gotta come back because Rach has so many more great tips
05:04 about this awesome Arizona destination.
05:07 So we'll check back in with Rachel.
05:09 - Yep, later on in the show,
05:10 we got a little more wind flow in the meteor crater.
05:12 - Okay, I'm going out singing that Eagle song.
05:15 All right, welcome back.
05:17 In the first half of the show,
05:19 Rachel Harris gave us some tips
05:21 for when you're traveling to Winslow, Arizona.
05:23 Well, we didn't get to all of them.
05:25 So Rachel, what else should people know
05:27 before going to Winslow?
05:29 Give us a scoop.
05:30 - All right, let's roll the video
05:31 because if you're a train lover,
05:32 you have got to go to this historic town of Winslow.
05:36 So the La Posada Inn we talked about earlier,
05:39 it backs up to the BNSF railway
05:42 and they've got a beautiful patio out back.
05:44 So for train lovers, they are in heaven
05:47 and you can take a cocktail out there as well
05:49 and watch the trains, over 90 trains a day,
05:52 roll on by and Amtrak also comes twice daily.
05:57 So check that out.
05:59 And you'll see here in just a second
06:02 that folks are getting off the train,
06:04 walking over to the hotel to check in.
06:07 So that's something else you could do.
06:07 - Oh my gosh, that's a door to door service.
06:09 - Yeah, you can do a train trip
06:11 and get off and stay at the La Posada,
06:12 which by the way is on the national and state register
06:15 of historic places when it comes to hotels.
06:17 - Very cool.
06:17 - So check that out for sure.
06:19 And also one more thing about La Posada, the restaurant.
06:23 If we can show that video, it's called the Turquoise Room
06:26 and it is a highly rated restaurant.
06:29 There's the coffee shop right there.
06:31 It's called the Turquoise Room because it's named
06:33 after the fancy private dining car from the past
06:37 that was in the super chief train that ran from 1937 to 74
06:42 from Chicago to LA.
06:44 There I am having a drink in the bar.
06:44 - That looks delicious.
06:45 - It was a Cosmo.
06:46 - Cheers.
06:47 - So good.
06:48 And that train back in the day was called Train of the Stars
06:50 because lots of celebrities, we get off the train
06:53 and go into the La Posada to eat at the restaurant,
06:57 the Harvey House, which is now the Turquoise Room.
06:59 - And there are some stars right there.
07:00 - And that's my in-laws, Eddie and Charles.
07:02 We took them on the trip.
07:03 They're big train lovers.
07:05 That's a beautiful soup, corn and bean.
07:07 All the entrees are fantastic.
07:09 And the placemats are from the original placemats
07:13 back in the train days, the old train days.
07:15 Isn't that cool?
07:16 - It is, I read they have new placemats coming.
07:18 So I'm gonna have to go check that out.
07:19 And are you a bloody merry gal
07:21 or a coffee gal in the morning?
07:23 They have both.
07:24 - Both.
07:25 - And you gotta have the cinnamon roll.
07:26 So definitely eat at the Turquoise Room.
07:28 - You can do breakfast and dinner.
07:30 Delicious.
07:31 - It's so good.
07:32 It's an award-winning restaurant.
07:33 All right, let's go to downtown Winslow.
07:35 There's a few things to do.
07:37 It is a small town, but check it out.
07:39 Population only 8,900.
07:42 So you get that small town quaint feel.
07:45 Used to be right off the Route 66.
07:47 Now the I-40's there,
07:48 but people still come to see the history.
07:50 This store is called the Arizona 66 Trading Company.
07:53 If you're an Eagles fan, they got everything Eagles.
07:56 They got everything Route 66.
07:58 Look at the song, "Witchy Woman" T-shirt.
08:00 There's also shirts that say, "Take it easy."
08:04 And then fun too, it's almost like a mini museum
08:07 for the Eagles, as you can see.
08:09 And they've got tons of gift ideas as well.
08:11 That's the old Trails Museum.
08:13 Definitely visit that.
08:14 Flatbed Ford Cafe is fun.
08:17 Homemade breakfast and lunch right there.
08:20 They also sell T-shirts and aprons.
08:24 Make sure you try Grandma's Tacos on Taco Tuesdays.
08:28 - Rachel, you're making me so hungry.
08:30 - I love cafes like that, just love it.
08:32 And then Westernware, you gotta check out
08:34 Rhinestones and Bling.
08:37 Everything Western, this is the town
08:39 where you go to take it easy.
08:41 - Oh my gosh, what a fun trip.
08:42 And I know we have another amazing spot, right?
08:45 - So here's what's really cool.
08:46 Just a 30 minute drive from Winslow to the Meteor Crater.
08:49 So let's roll video there.
08:51 Now I said goodbye to my in-laws and my husband
08:53 and I went here by myself on the way home.
08:56 This place is family friendly.
08:58 Tickets aren't bad at all, $20 to $29.
09:01 Active duty U.S. military, get in free.
09:03 And look at this, you can see the Apollo 11 test capsule
09:07 because the astronauts back in the '60s
09:10 actually trained for the moon landing here at the crater.
09:13 'Cause it kinda mimics craters on the moon.
09:15 So I think that is so fascinating.
09:17 Love that, that is one of the lookout points.
09:20 And check it out, you can get so much exercise
09:22 walking around, looking at the crater.
09:25 - So you can go all the way down in there.
09:26 - Yes, and you can walk around yourself
09:28 or you can do guided tours.
09:31 And there is a piece of the original crater
09:34 and they've got a new coffee house.
09:36 Beautiful space, great food.
09:38 You can take home souvenirs or coffee.
09:40 And there's a nice museum as well, very interactive.
09:43 Kids love that kind of thing.
09:45 And it truly is the best preserved,
09:48 first proven meteor crater on earth.
09:51 So I recommend the meteor crater
09:53 and I recommend checking out Winslow.
09:56 I just love doing these Arizona road trips.
09:57 - Oh my goodness, well a road trip is definitely
10:00 one of the best ways to stay on a budget
10:02 and you gave us all the best places to stay caffeinated.

10:07 - Managedmoms.com, both articles are published.
10:09 The meteor crater, Winslow, with all of the links

10:14 - Well Rachel, I have to go just for the food.
10:15 - Yes, do it. - 'Cause everything you showed
10:16 looks amazing. - I'll go with you.
10:17 - Perfect, all right.
