00:00 New year, new wearable, Iris Vision Live 2.0. Go!
00:05 Welcome to 2024 and we are back with our first video of the year.
00:17 And today we are looking at a brand new product that has just released, the Iris Vision Live 2.0.
00:24 This is the second generation of the very popular electronic wearable device, the Iris Vision Live.
00:31 For those that may not be interested.
00:34 If they're not interested, they're not watching the video.
00:37 How about for those that might not be aware of what these devices are.
00:41 Basically, they're electronic magnification devices that you wear on your head.
00:46 That's called wearables.
00:47 If you're familiar with a CCTV or a video magnifier, then you kind of know what these devices do already.
00:53 They give you the ability to increase and decrease magnification and change color contrast.
00:59 You can take a look at past videos that we have done, especially on the Iris Vision Live 1.0.
01:06 Which will allow you to see what is new with the 2.0.
01:11 If you don't want to watch that video, no worries.
01:13 We're going to be covering three categories today.
01:16 The headset design, the control and feature set of the new 2.0.
01:22 Luke, why don't you start us out with our first category?
01:25 Why, thank you, sir.
01:26 First of all, design pros.
01:31 We have an entirely new headset.
01:33 With the new headset come some exciting new features.
01:36 Let's take a look at the pros first with those.
01:39 On the top of the headset here, we have three dials.
01:42 We have two to the left and right and we have one in the center.
01:45 Those dials will allow us to correct for spherical prescription for each eye individually.
01:51 This is the first time I've seen that particular feature.
01:53 In the middle, we have an adjustment for our pupillary distance.
01:57 The pupillary distance is how far away your eyes are.
02:01 You can adjust for that.
02:03 People with larger heads tend to have their eyes spaced further apart.
02:06 What are you trying to say?
02:07 [laughter]
02:08 You're going with that.
02:09 Another pro of the headset, we have this new cover at the front of the headset.
02:14 Which hides the phone.
02:16 It's a little bit more stylish in that regard.
02:18 You don't just see the phone here in the front of the headset as you did with the IrisVision Live 1.0.
02:23 It's actually hidden behind this plastic door, I will say.
02:28 That has got the IrisVision logo on it.
02:30 It looks pretty nice.
02:32 Those are a couple of pros, Corey.
02:35 For those that are familiar with the original IrisVision Live 1.0.
02:43 It's a mouthful.
02:44 It was using the Samsung VR Gear headset, if I'm not mistaken.
02:50 They were obviously relying on a third-party company for that product.
02:55 Now, IrisVision has designed their own headset.
02:58 Obviously, a pro to that is that they control it now.
03:01 They don't have to worry about another company just saying, "We're done creating that."
03:06 Now, you can't purchase it anymore.
03:08 I would see that as a pro.
03:11 I think, if I'm not mistaken, and you'll know better, but it's a bit smaller, right?
03:17 I mean, it's very close to the same size, but I think it's a teeny bit.
03:21 It's not enough to make it a pro as far as I'm concerned.
03:24 Okay, gotcha.
03:25 It's too small.
03:26 More of a per?
03:27 Yeah, exactly.
03:28 It's slightly narrower, but nothing to write home about.
03:31 Actually, one other pro that I did think of, though, is that the charging port is actually open here.
03:37 It's very easy to have this connected to power while you're using it.
03:42 Obviously, with these, the battery life is fairly limited.
03:44 You're looking at a couple of hours, but this one's super easy to plug it in while you're using it,
03:48 and therefore, use it for as long as you want to.
03:50 I think this sort of falls under the headset, but maybe not.
03:54 It probably almost falls more under our future category of feature set,
03:58 but it is now using a Pixel phone versus the Samsung phone.
04:03 And with that, and although I think the Samsung was still using it, too,
04:06 but as you were saying, with the power being exposed, it is USB-C,
04:10 so it's a lot easier plugging in.
04:12 Doesn't matter which way you're doing it.
04:14 On top of the benefits of the newer phone, too.
04:18 Yes, which is primarily a better camera.
04:20 Yeah.
04:21 All right.
04:22 That's the pros.
04:23 Now it's time for the cons.
04:24 You come here for the honest truth, and that's what we give you.
04:28 So we got to talk about cons of the headset design.
04:32 I feel that the overall quality of the headset itself, the plastic,
04:37 has a cheap feel to it.
04:39 It does.
04:40 Compared to the 1.0 headset from Samsung, there's just--
04:46 and I guess I can't put my hands on it.
04:49 I can't put my finger on what feels cheap about it,
04:52 but it just has a little cheaper feel to it, personal opinion,
04:55 which is always right.
04:56 Yeah.
04:57 Okay.
04:58 A couple of other cons on the headset design.
05:00 Number one, the straps which go over your head and which hold the device in place
05:06 somehow are flimsier than the straps on the previous headset.
05:10 Okay.
05:11 So it doesn't feel as secure on the head.
05:13 These are minor problems, by the way.
05:15 This isn't anything major, but it doesn't feel quite as secure.
05:18 But one thing that is relatively major is if you want to turn on the device,
05:23 the only way to access the power button is by opening the front door here
05:29 that the phone is inside and then holding down the power button on the phone.
05:34 So the phone just sits in this door at the front,
05:36 and like I said, the only way to turn it on is to basically take the phone out.
05:40 Now, it's not too hard to put the phone back in place once you've done that,
05:43 but it's just a bit weird how you have to take the phone out in order to turn it on
05:46 since turning it on is such a fundamental action that you would need to be doing.
05:50 Yeah, you can turn it off from the remote, which we'll talk about in a moment,
05:54 but you have to turn it on.
05:55 Now, I'm wondering if they'll do something when the Live 1.0 came out.
06:00 Yeah.
06:01 They also had a very similar issue where the power button was tucked underneath kind of the side,
06:06 and they ended up creating a very, very, I think they used NASA to design a special tab for it.
06:13 But I'm wondering if they'll do something similar here,
06:16 although with the door being completely enclosed, it might be tough to do.
06:21 But again, like you said, it's not a showstopper.
06:24 It's just an inconvenience.
06:26 All right. Well, with that being said, let's move on to our next category, which is controls.
06:31 Okay, on to controls.
06:33 And first of all, let's start with the pros because, Corey, we love to be positive.
06:37 And we like to control things.
06:39 Okay.
06:40 All right.
06:41 So the controls are done through something known as a controller.
06:45 Would that be a remote controller?
06:47 It is a remote controller.
06:48 Yeah. So we have a wireless controller to use the device as opposed to the previous controls,
06:55 which were on the headset with the previous version.
06:57 So number one, Corey, what I like about this controller is we can use it in either hand.
07:02 With the previous headset, the controls were all on the right side of the headset,
07:06 making it difficult for people who didn't have the use of their right arm or hand to operate the device.
07:12 With the remote control, we can use it in either hand, and therefore we solved that problem.
07:16 I like the overall design of the remote control itself.
07:21 I think it feels good in the hand.
07:23 The buttons are pretty easy to feel and distinguish.
07:26 Yeah.
07:27 The little trigger or Z button or whatever you called it earlier.
07:30 Yeah.
07:31 I think that's kind of clever in the way that they use it too.
07:35 So for me, I think the remote itself is a pro.
07:39 I have one thing to say, Corey.
07:40 Yes.
07:41 I am not a fan, but we'll find out why in the con section because we're keeping it positive for now.
07:45 I like it.
07:46 Now, we did have a third pro.
07:48 Yes.
07:49 What was it?
07:50 Well, I'll use my voice to tell you about the third.
07:55 Apart from the remote, we can also use voice commands.
07:59 Corey was experimenting with this earlier, and it seems to work really nicely.
08:02 You can hold down the Z trigger, and then that will activate the microphone.
08:07 And then you can say things such as saying the name of a mode to switch to it,
08:11 or you can say Zoom 5 or Zoom 10 or whatever it might be.
08:15 You can say flashlight on, all sorts of different voice commands there.
08:19 And they're pretty snappy, and it seems to understand you pretty well,
08:22 and it does what you've asked it pretty quickly.
08:24 Yeah.
08:25 I didn't have really any issue.
08:26 I think the hardest thing was just to figure out exactly what verbiage it wanted,
08:30 which if I would have took a moment and read the user manual or looked online,
08:34 I probably would have had a better understanding.
08:36 But it was very snappy, which I appreciate.
08:39 There's nothing worse than giving a voice control and then waiting longer
08:43 than it would take to just do it by the remote.
08:45 So annoying.
08:46 Instead.
08:47 Time for cons.
08:49 [laughter]
08:51 With every Pro, there are cons, and we have to cover them.
08:56 So for me, one of the things that is a con is that I'm not a big fan of the--
09:02 and this kind of comes back to the headset piece that we were holding off on it.
09:06 But because the phone just slides into the new headset
09:10 and doesn't actually connect as it did with the Live 1.0,
09:16 we now lose the ability to control the device from the headset.
09:20 Now, you mentioned just during our pros section here that the older one
09:26 had a touchpad on the right-hand side, and that was a con in the fact that
09:30 it was difficult for people who maybe were left-handed
09:34 or didn't have use of their right hand.
09:38 I agree with you on that, but what I don't like about the new 2.0
09:42 is that we only have the remote control.
09:45 So two things.
09:46 Number one, what happens if we lose the remote?
09:48 Now we can't use the device anymore, which is a bit of an issue.
09:51 I will say, I think these are generic controllers,
09:53 so you could probably buy replacements fairly easily.
09:56 You think so?
09:57 I believe so, yeah.
09:58 Interesting.
09:59 I mean, they probably sell extra remote.
10:01 I would imagine.
10:02 These have not been custom designed.
10:04 The remote, okay.
10:06 The other thing is that it doesn't make it nearly as hands-free as the 1.0 did.
10:13 You have to have the remote in your hand or in your pocket,
10:17 and then you've got to reach to get it, or I guess maybe if you put it
10:20 around your wrist, but either way, to me, it's a little less convenient
10:24 to be working hands-free with the remote.
10:27 So that's a con for me.
10:29 I will roll into something along the same lines,
10:31 which is the remote takes two AAA batteries,
10:34 and the remote itself cannot be recharged,
10:36 so you have to swap the batteries out.
10:38 And sometimes I have a bit of trouble opening this compartment.
10:41 There we go.
10:42 I managed to get it.
10:43 So a couple of AAA batteries in there.
10:45 But, yeah, ours seemed to run out really quickly.
10:47 Now I don't know if that's normal or whether that was just something weird
10:50 going on, but obviously if your batteries run out while you're out and about
10:54 trying to use the IrisVision, now you literally cannot control it
10:57 until you've replaced the batteries.
10:59 So definitely not ideal.
11:00 And we've had, we got our device right before the holidays,
11:05 and we probably used it for a total of three hours?
11:09 Not even? Two hours?
11:11 Maybe closer to two, yeah.
11:12 Yeah, and the remote batteries were dead yesterday.
11:15 However, we don't know for sure how much charge those batteries had
11:18 in the first place.
11:19 But they were provided.
11:20 They were provided, but I don't remember if they were new in a packet
11:23 or whether they were in the controller already.
11:25 So I can't say for sure.
11:26 So we just replaced them yesterday, so I guess we'll see.
11:29 But on first impressions, it seemed like the battery life
11:32 wasn't particularly great.
11:33 And again, this is our personal experience.
11:35 It might not be exactly what everyone else experiences.
11:38 Yeah, I thought we only dealt in the truth here.
11:40 That's right.
11:42 So now I can finally do my rant about this controller.
11:45 And my rant will start with the words, "I hate it."
11:49 Because...
11:50 Wow.
11:51 I know, I have strong feelings about this.
11:53 A few different reasons.
11:54 There is a touchpad on the top that we are supposed to use.
11:57 We swipe to the right to zoom in and to the left to zoom out.
12:00 We can also swipe up and down.
12:01 It's so unresponsive.
12:03 It's horrible to use.
12:05 I was working with a client yesterday.
12:07 They were just trying to zoom in and out.
12:09 The most fundamental thing that you would want to do with a device like this.
12:14 And they were struggling so much.
12:15 They were swipe, swipe, swipe, not doing anything.
12:17 Eventually, it might increase in magnification.
12:20 Swipe, swipe, swipe.
12:21 Eventually, it might increase again.
12:23 It was so inefficient and inconvenient.
12:26 I've had the same experience.
12:28 I really do not like the touchpad at all.
12:30 That, for me, is a huge negative.
12:33 And then we also have just a couple of buttons on here.
12:36 Because there's only a couple of buttons,
12:38 it does make it a little bit confusing to navigate some of the menus.
12:42 We will get into that a little bit more when we do the feature set segment.
12:47 But yeah, for the most part, touchpad, hugely inefficient and poor.
12:51 In my opinion.
12:53 So, thankfully, we are back to the pros.
12:57 And we are on to the feature set.
12:59 And there are a number of pros with the feature set.
13:02 Corey, IrisVision, the IrisVision Live 1.0,
13:06 was one of our most successful devices in terms of improving people's functional vision.
13:10 People just seem to find it worked the best.
13:13 Yeah, I always got the feedback or heard from people that it had very good quality,
13:18 image quality, and then the field of view was very good with it.
13:23 Yeah, definitely. Yeah, yeah.
13:25 And so the IrisVision Live 2.0 carries on in that tradition, I'm glad to say.
13:28 In the regular viewing mode, we have 14 levels of magnification,
13:32 which is a significant amount of magnification we can apply.
13:35 And the image quality is very good, even at those higher levels of magnification,
13:39 we still have a good quality image.
13:41 Very good color reproduction and also brightness,
13:44 which a lot of people really, really do benefit from.
13:47 So some great benefits there.
13:49 And in addition to the regular viewing mode, we also do have some of those other modes.
13:54 There's actually a lot of options here.
13:56 We can change brightness, we can change contrast,
13:59 we can have different high contrast color modes, black on white, white on black, yellow and green.
14:04 We can have outlining modes that look really cool.
14:07 We can take photos and save them into a photo gallery.
14:10 So, you know, as there was before, there are some really fantastic features built into this.
14:15 And we also have a television mode.
14:17 Now, we still have the regular television viewing mode that you can use for watching an actual television.
14:22 And there are still those same options to adjust for exposure
14:26 that can really help bring out the correct colors of the television and make it look great.
14:32 IrisVision, I think, does the best job of that.
14:34 But there is also a new feature which hasn't actually completely released yet,
14:38 but it is a TV streaming feature, Corey.
14:42 Yeah, and so, one second back, if you don't mind.
14:46 Sure.
14:47 If we could just...
14:48 Beep, beep.
14:49 Just reverse this.
14:50 Oh, yeah.
14:51 Or rewind that.
14:52 It's always been an issue with wearable devices when you look directly at a TV or computer monitor
14:57 when you're doing, like, camera looking at another screen, right?
15:01 That usually has been an issue.
15:03 But from my understanding, the IrisVision, as you said, it's always done a really good job at it.
15:08 And part of it, I'm guessing, is that extra exposure.
15:11 That's exactly what it is.
15:12 And controls.
15:13 And so, I think that's really good.
15:16 But then with this new feature, the VisionCast, they're now selling a separate device.
15:22 Well, they're not now selling it.
15:23 At the time of this video, at least.
15:25 It will be a device that you'll need to purchase.
15:28 I don't believe it's going to come with the IrisVision Live 2.0.
15:32 You'll have to buy it separately.
15:33 But it's basically an external device that you are going to plug an HDMI input into.
15:39 So, a TV, a computer, a game box, you know, whatever, a Blu-ray player.
15:44 And it's going to then wirelessly stream that signal to your IrisVision Live 2.0,
15:51 bringing that right into the headset then.
15:55 Which then will allow you to control magnification and brightness.
15:59 Everything you could do when it's a live camera view, we assume.
16:03 We assume.
16:04 We don't actually know for sure.
16:05 Yeah.
16:06 But, yeah, that will be a nice feature.
16:07 If anybody is familiar with the Vision Buddy,
16:09 and of course you can check out a video on the Vision Buddy by clicking on the card,
16:13 it's going to be a similar type of setup to that.
16:15 And so it will be interesting to see how well that works.
16:17 Well, Corey, that's definitely going to be exciting to find out.
16:21 But now it's time to talk about the cons.
16:25 Boo-hoo.
16:28 It is time for the wrath of cons and we have--
16:31 Con!
16:33 Actually, I'm not sure he was plural, not cons.
16:35 Well, actually, he was part of a genetically engineered race.
16:38 I don't know whether they were all the four of them.
16:40 All right, we're going to move on.
16:42 We're moving on, Star Trek.
16:43 We do need to talk about--
16:45 Corey, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.
16:51 Okay.
16:54 I don't know if that's--
16:55 It's a quote from Wrath of Khan.
16:56 Okay, well, I actually never saw that movie.
16:59 All right, we are done with Star Trek.
17:01 Here we go.
17:02 No, there's just a couple cons for the feature set, which is a good thing.
17:06 And the one I want to point out is that a few of the features that we saw in the Iris Vision Live 1.0 are not on this device.
17:15 They're not?
17:16 They're not.
17:17 The two biggest ones being the YouTube capability to search for and watch YouTube videos and OCR.
17:25 Now, my understanding, the YouTube feature was difficult to maintain.
17:30 I think the YouTube tie-in and API was an issue and it probably--whatever.
17:36 I see why they potentially weren't able to kind of bring that over or maybe chose not to.
17:41 But I'm curious why OCR has been left off of this device.
17:46 Now, maybe it's going to come in the future, but as of today, there is no OCR on the Iris Vision Live 2.0.
17:53 Yeah, although they do keep on releasing updates, which are getting pushed to the phone.
17:57 So who knows by the time this video releases--
17:59 I was going to say, I believe two came in by the time we were starting the video.
18:04 Yeah, so--
18:05 That is very true.
18:06 I wanted to talk about another con, which was the menu system.
18:09 Now, this is actually something similar to the Iris Vision Inspire.
18:12 They have this whole menu system where they've nested the levels of things under things under things.
18:17 And I find it to be annoying to navigate.
18:21 With the original Iris Vision Live 1.0, you would press a button and it would just go to the next mode, next mode, next mode, next mode, next mode.
18:27 All of those modes were there and available, and there was no menus to navigate per se.
18:32 However, with this device, it's got this whole menu system.
18:36 So we can go into a mode, for example, an outlining mode.
18:40 But now we have to jump into the menus to change what type of outline we want, how thick is the outline, what color is the outline.
18:46 That's all cool that you can do that, but it just adds this level of complexity.
18:50 It's the same with our high-contrast reading colors.
18:52 We go into the reading color mode, but now we have to go into the menu to choose the reading color and so on and so forth.
18:57 So it's just an added level of complexity.
19:00 And of course, it means we have to use the dreaded touch part of the controller to swipe up and down through the menus.
19:06 And you know my feelings on that already.
19:08 So that would be my main con in terms of the features.
19:12 But I would say the pluses of the features definitely outweigh the minuses.
19:18 I think that's always been a really hard thing for companies to balance is simplicity over features and allowing you to customize.
19:28 How do you allow somebody to customize, but keep it simple?
19:30 And I think that's, you know, I think Iris Vision chose their way and it sounds like you're saying they chose wrong.
19:38 Well, that's my opinion, but it's down to the people.
19:40 Maybe we almost need a little clip at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
19:45 You chose incorrectly.
19:48 We are really going for it with the movie course today.
19:52 All right. Well, we've talked about our three categories and now it's time to do our final thoughts.
19:58 All right. We've covered all of the categories.
20:01 We did our pros and cons of all of them.
20:04 And I think at the end of the day, we go, Luke, we do go home at the end of the day, which is great.
20:10 I think at the end of the day, this is a very good device.
20:14 I think the Iris Vision Live 1.0, as we mentioned, was our top device that people chose.
20:21 And I think the 2.0 is probably going to continue down that path.
20:25 Seems likely.
20:26 I think we identified a few cons, but really at the end of the day, most of those cons for me weren't showstoppers.
20:31 They were more like inconvenience.
20:33 Hey, if we could design it, this is how we would have done it.
20:36 Yeah. I think overall, the important thing is how much it improves the user's vision.
20:44 And I think this device will probably, like you say, be one of the best in terms of just functional vision improvement.
20:50 I do take offense to some of the design decisions.
20:55 Maybe that's a little strong, man.
20:56 You hate the remote and you're offended by the design.
20:59 That's a little strong.
21:00 I just find that it is in some ways a downgrade over the original Iris Vision Live, which is a shame.
21:07 But that's just my personal opinion.
21:10 You guys who've been watching the video, you've got an idea of the design now.
21:14 And some of the things that we've said are cons might not bother you in the least, or you might even think they're pros.
21:18 So this is just our personal opinion.
21:20 And one of the hardest things with wearables, and we say this to a lot of people call us and say,
21:25 "I'm in the market for a wearable. Which one should I get?"
21:28 So much of this relies on your experience and your opinion.
21:33 That's why it's so important for you to get hands-on with these devices.
21:36 We produce these videos so that you have a good understanding of what you're getting into
21:41 and maybe what devices you want to go and look at.
21:44 But really, at the end of the day, don't listen to us.
21:47 Get hands-on with it.
21:49 That's a great way to bring views into the channel.
21:51 First, subscribe before you don't listen to us.
21:53 [laughter]
21:55 And of course, you can come to Vision Forward to try all of these devices.
21:59 Yeah, fly on in if you'd like.
22:01 Well, what if you're already in Milwaukee? Do you still have to fly in?
22:03 Yes, you do.
22:04 Okay. The only way to get here is by plane.
22:07 You can use a helicopter.
22:08 Okay, fair enough.
22:09 So you can visit us. We're in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and we would love to see you.
22:13 We have a learning management system where you can go and check out some very nicely produced webinars,
22:18 which are longer form and slightly more professional content, let's say, about various different accessibility topics.
22:23 Corey, where would people go for that?
22:25 They can head over to techconnect.vision-forward.org, where you can get free on-demand ACVR EP credit.
22:32 I love how you said "professional" because there's really kind of a ceiling to how professional we get.
22:37 As professional as we can.
22:39 We're not watching this for professional.
22:41 And check out some of our previous videos. We've had some really good videos recently.
22:44 We do a live show every other Thursday, and that live show is called TechConnect Live.
22:49 You can check it out by coming to our YouTube channel, 11 a.m. Central.
22:52 The 18th, we had Carrie from Carry On Accessibility on the show.
22:56 We had a great time.
22:57 So check out our video and also go to her YouTube channel.
23:00 It is youtube.com/@carryonaccessibility.
23:04 You can also check out our previous produced video, which was on the iDaptic.
23:09 That's another wearable.
23:10 So if you've enjoyed this video and you haven't seen our iDaptic video, why not check it out?
23:14 There will be a card up here, as I'm sure there probably was for the latest live video as well.
23:19 And you can find out about the iDaptic i5 and whether that might be the wearable for you.
23:25 So lots of exciting content.
23:27 And of course, we do have another TechConnect Live coming up.
23:30 February 1st is the date for that.
23:32 And we're going to have Jesse Anderson on to talk about accessible video gaming and other exciting topics.
23:37 So why not join us for that? Again, 11 a.m. Central.
23:40 We would love to have you.
23:41 But for now, we will bid you adieu, adios, and farewell.
23:46 Goodbye.
23:49 [Laughter]
23:51 [Music]
23:57 New year, new wearable, Irish, Irish.
24:00 God dang it.
24:01 I knew you were going to make me do this.
24:03 All the Irish vision.
24:04 All the Irish vision.
24:05 Let's switch to our decision.
24:06 Here we go.
24:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
