00:00 Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor for Sussex Newspapers. Lovely
00:06 this afternoon to be speaking to Carly Smallman, who is bringing something very special to
00:10 Chichester for the very first time, Bring Your Own Baby Comedy. Now it's going to be
00:15 in the Minerva Bar, midday on Monday, February 26th. Carly, what's it all about? What is
00:22 Bring Your Own Baby all about? Bring Your Own Baby Comedy?
00:25 It's so much fun. So what we are putting on is we are putting on a lunchtime comedy show
00:32 for parents. They can bring their babies and what they can expect is a brilliant, fun,
00:39 friendly comedy experience of comedians doing their usual 20 minute set that you'd see on
00:44 a Friday or Saturday night in any major comedy club around the country. But we have got a
00:50 twist on it. We are also making it a nice environment for the babies with soft flooring,
00:55 baby changing, buggy parking, extra helping hands. It's just a really nice opportunity
01:01 to come out and have a laugh in the middle of the day.
01:04 And it's just making it possible for these mums with tiny babies then?
01:08 Exactly, to come and see a comedy show and hopefully meet some other fun people, some
01:15 other fun local parents.
01:16 And as you were saying, you need a certain type of comedian, don't you? Someone who's
01:20 interrupted by whatever the baby's...
01:24 None of our comedians mind being heckled by the screams of a baby. Yeah, we've got very
01:31 experienced comedians who will not get distracted by either the baby screaming or how cute the
01:38 babies are, which is for me personally, the biggest distraction of all, because they've
01:43 got such beautiful little angelic faces when they look at you and you're on stage doing
01:48 some of your comedy material. You can't believe you're saying it in front of the baby because
01:52 obviously everyone's doing their normal stand-up set, so there is some swearing. But the babies,
01:58 they don't seem to mind. They're embracing it.
02:02 That sounds fantastic. And is the comedy about parenthood or is it the comedy sets that the
02:07 comedians give anyway?
02:09 We book a range of different comedians. The comedy doesn't have to be about parenthood.
02:14 We book comedians who are parents, we book comedians who aren't parents. We don't like
02:18 to book two comedians who have similar material onto the same show because we like there to
02:23 be a good variety. But even the comedians who are parents, all of the jokes that they
02:29 have about their kids or parenting in general are jokes that they would tell in the evening
02:35 anyway.
02:36 That sounds fantastic. Now, if it goes well in Chichester, could this be the start of
02:40 many? Are you looking to set up Chichester as a regular venue for yourself?
02:44 If the venue are up for it, we would love that. We would love that. I do love, I love
02:52 towns on the South Coast. So it's for me personally, always a lovely spot, the nicest part of the
02:57 world to come and visit anyway.
02:58 Well, good luck on that first venture into Chichester. I hope it goes brilliantly. It's
03:03 on Monday, February 26th at midday. Lovely to speak to you.
03:08 Thank you so much.
