00:00 I pulled up to set and he was in drag already.
00:02 Because he looks very beautiful in drag.
00:04 Yeah.
00:04 Kind of different to how you might think, I think.
00:07 Mm-hmm.
00:07 I had multiple people ask me who the girl was.
00:10 I was like, "That's Troy."
00:12 I'm doing the sequel.
00:14 You heard it here first.
00:17 Wow.
00:18 Hi, I'm Nick, and I'm joined by the Driver Era
00:28 for the latest in Enemies in Conversation series.
00:31 How's it going today?
00:33 It's going well.
00:33 It's going really well.
00:34 Yeah.
00:35 I just did a photo shoot.
00:36 Yeah.
00:37 What did you do today?
00:38 I was just, I walked around a lot.
00:40 I was listening to some demos, doing a little writing.
00:43 What did you do today?
00:44 Prepared for the interview.
00:46 Very conscientiously.
00:48 Oh, nice.
00:49 Yeah, well, you're mainly here for your screening
00:51 of your concert film.
00:53 What made you want to do the concert film
00:55 as well as the live album?
00:56 Did one come before the other?
00:58 Yeah, the concert film actually came first.
01:00 The main inspiration behind it was we did a similar concert
01:07 film at the same venue with our prior band, R5,
01:10 around eight years ago.
01:11 When we were gearing up to play the same venue again,
01:14 everyone was like, "We got to film it,"
01:17 just to show how much has happened since then,
01:19 how all the evolution and growth.
01:21 It was like eight years, right?
01:23 Yep, eight years.
01:24 So that was a big reason why we wanted to do it.
01:28 Yeah, it just kind of makes sense.
01:30 If you do a live concert movie,
01:31 you might as well do a live concert record as well.
01:34 Did it feel like quite a milestone moment
01:36 to be playing there again?
01:37 I feel like it almost meant more to the people
01:42 in our immediate crew.
01:44 Oh, I feel that.
01:45 And honestly, it was a big thing for our fans as well.
01:49 We do a lot of things for our fans.
01:50 We've had this amazing fan base since the beginning.
01:53 We have people come to shows all the time.
01:54 We've been around for 10 years,
01:56 seeing all you guys, seeing you grow and change.
01:59 So it was really a big part of it was doing it for the fans
02:03 and obviously the immediate crew.
02:06 At the screening in Paris,
02:08 there was a husband and wife that flew in from Mexico
02:12 for the screening.
02:13 That was shocking.
02:14 I had two feelings about it where I'm like,
02:19 "Yo, heck yeah, dope."
02:21 And then, "Oh, and she was pregnant too."
02:24 And then also like, "Dang, y'all pulling up for this?
02:28 "Holy."
02:29 But it's like sick.
02:30 Honestly, very grateful that that can happen sometimes.
02:37 When you meet fans,
02:38 'cause you've been doing meet and greets at the screening,
02:40 what kind of stuff do they tend to say to you?
02:42 It's all positive.
02:44 They like to share their experience with us,
02:49 which is a lot of it's like,
02:51 "I've been here since the beginning,"
02:53 or, "I've been here, I saw you guys first here
02:55 "and it's been so cool to be on this journey with you."
02:58 - So yeah, sometimes you get almost just like,
03:02 "Yo, I love what y'all are doing, keep going."
03:04 And they kinda wanna be short.
03:06 And then you sometimes get,
03:07 maybe someone that's been going through something
03:11 and it might be like,
03:14 "Hey, you saved my life multiple times."
03:17 And sometimes when you hear that,
03:18 it's a little, that's crazy.
03:20 - That's surreal for sure.
03:22 But it's a big reason why I think art is important
03:26 in the world, is because of,
03:28 it can help people feel good.
03:33 And that honestly is,
03:35 'cause I know what music's done for me
03:36 when I've been in tough situations
03:39 or hard times in my life.
03:41 So to have other people come to us and say,
03:44 "I broke up with my boyfriend," whatever,
03:46 "and your music's helped me get through that,"
03:48 is pretty cool.
03:49 'Cause I also have those fans
03:51 and I have those artists that have done that for me.
03:53 So I get it, it's cool.
03:55 - Yeah, so it's like a, kind of beautiful.
03:58 - Yeah.
03:59 - It's been six years of the Driver era,
04:01 but Driver era of like--
04:03 - Six?
04:04 - I think so, yeah.
04:05 - Seriously?
04:06 - Yeah, 2018. - What have we been doing?
04:07 - I know.
04:08 - Five, almost six, almost six.
04:09 - Goodness gracious.
04:10 - But if, because the Driver era did pick off
04:12 right from when R5 just kinda segued in,
04:15 it's 15 years of you two working together.
04:18 - Well.
04:19 - I guess to speak publicly,
04:20 you maybe were working before then.
04:21 Why do you think it's lasted, first question,
04:25 and how has your working relationship developed
04:27 in those 15 years, would you say?
04:28 - I think it's lasted because we're having fun
04:33 and I think people respond to that passion
04:40 and like joy that we,
04:42 'cause we're honestly genuinely having a wonderful time,
04:46 like I said, on stage and in the studio and stuff,
04:49 and I feel like that's transmuted through the music
04:52 and through the performances,
04:54 and I think people feel that and they like that.
04:57 - Yeah, yeah, just last night at dinner,
05:00 like we joke a lot where we're like,
05:02 we gotta keep doing this.
05:04 This is like, how did we get so lucky?
05:06 Like, this is the best job in the world.
05:09 For a lot of our ways of creating
05:12 and/or even playing a live show,
05:15 or even just in conversation,
05:17 we kinda are a good match.
05:21 My strengths are, or my weaknesses,
05:25 his strengths kinda can, ah, ah, and vice versa.
05:30 - Yeah, totally.
05:30 - So you get this like kinda harmony thing going.
05:33 And then it also trails down to the rest of the,
05:36 every person that's been involved in the project
05:38 for the last couple of years say,
05:41 we're not really, we're trying to go off and create,
05:45 and like, ah, do our thing.
05:46 - Trying to be artists.
05:46 - Yeah, you know.
05:47 Boom, you do have people on the squad
05:49 that are able to kinda maintain
05:51 what needs to be maintained, so we can do that,
05:54 and the band and/or brand, business,
05:59 collective can still succeed.
06:04 - I definitely feel like in life in general,
06:07 it's important to surround yourself with people
06:09 that are wonderful and smart,
06:13 and like just even, like not even in business,
06:15 but just in life, like,
06:16 it's good to surround yourself with good people,
06:17 and I feel like that's a good reason
06:19 for our longevity as well,
06:20 is we have like really amazing people
06:22 looking after us, for sure.
06:24 - Actually, I always joke, like,
06:26 I fully understand why you have a bunch of solo artists
06:31 that kinda start out at a young age
06:33 and kinda go through a tough path
06:36 because they don't really have much of a support system
06:40 and family and close friends,
06:41 because boom, you become this famous dude,
06:44 a lot of people are kissing your ass, for sure,
06:46 like that's inevitable,
06:47 and so it's a weird place,
06:50 if you don't have some close homies prior to that,
06:54 it's like, it can be like a weird place,
06:55 and then also, all these environments you're in are like,
06:58 there's a lot that is kinda offered to you,
07:03 and so yeah, if you're like this by yourself on tour,
07:07 like, you probably could find yourself
07:09 down a dangerous path easily,
07:12 so I just, I feel like I've kinda understood that
07:16 a little more,
07:16 and how much I'm actually grateful
07:19 for the whole squad and team.
07:21 - But our working, honestly,
07:22 our working relationship has been,
07:24 like, it's always been good,
07:25 like Rocky's saying,
07:26 we've always been able to work off each other really well.
07:28 There's like some personal things in our lives,
07:30 like living situations and working environments,
07:34 that could be ironed out,
07:35 and I feel like we could be more productive,
07:38 but, you know, that's just this life stuff.
07:41 - Yeah, I agree, on the personal side,
07:44 like, some things barely, maybe,
07:47 started falling off the wagon,
07:50 and I think it was just enough to where we were like,
07:52 all right, let's go, let's get it back together.
07:55 - Yeah.
07:55 - Like, we do all need to find a fucking house,
07:58 and like, there's like, little things.
08:00 - Solitude is, at the end of the day,
08:03 essential for a lot of things.
08:07 - So were you living together,
08:08 and that was kind of what was the problem?
08:11 - No, it wasn't necessarily a problem,
08:13 it just, we outgrew the situation.
08:16 - Yeah, I wouldn't even, it's almost like,
08:19 not even the fact that we were living together
08:20 is a problem, it's more...
08:22 - 'Cause we can spend every day together, no problem.
08:24 - Yeah, it's more...
08:25 - It's more just having moments in your life
08:27 to get solitude, to gather your thoughts,
08:30 and to gather, and to like, manifest.
08:34 - Yeah, like you're coming, like, boom,
08:35 you took care of what you needed to take care of,
08:37 and you know tomorrow we're hitting the studio or something,
08:41 so you're almost preparing for that moment,
08:43 and you're coming into the studio with the right vibe,
08:46 the right energy, because you're kind of in control of it.
08:50 And then, if you almost are living with
08:53 a bunch of your brothers,
08:56 it can almost be easy to be like,
08:58 you're waking up and you're like,
08:59 let's relax today, you know what I'm saying?
09:02 That's like a subtle way to, you know, explain it, but...
09:07 - Solitude's just really good for refocusing,
09:10 and meditating, and I've read it in some
09:15 random philosophy books, but it's essential for
09:18 the base of love, essentially.
09:21 - I feel like if you never kind of have any space
09:23 for yourself, then you can't really be creative,
09:25 because sometimes ideas come when you're not really
09:27 thinking about anything else.
09:27 - No, 100%.
09:28 - You kind of need that.
09:29 - Yes, immediately, if I'm kind of trying to work
09:34 on something, and say a couple people are in my house,
09:38 not necessarily Ross, if he's there, we're working together,
09:40 but like, someone else is there, I notice,
09:43 I'm like, it's hard to not be curious about them.
09:46 It just is like, so hard.
09:48 I'm always curious about people's emotions and stuff,
09:51 and it's not like I'm purposefully thinking about that,
09:54 I just, I feel like I just am.
09:56 - Their energy is there.
09:57 Even if they're not talking to you,
09:59 if they're not bothering you, you can feel it,
10:03 and it has influence.
10:05 - And sometimes that's good, for sure.
10:08 - But you also need the moments alone.
10:11 - How does the songwriting in the band tend to work?
10:17 Do you tend to bring in your own individual ideas,
10:19 or do you sort of go into the studio together
10:21 and start from scratch together?
10:22 How does it tend to kind of pan out?
10:25 - A little bit of both.
10:26 Yeah, we basically just have a hard drive
10:30 full of hundreds of songs,
10:33 and sometimes you'll pull up an old song,
10:36 sometimes I'll have a song that I literally wrote
10:39 and produced all by myself, and he'll have songs
10:41 that he wrote and produced all by himself,
10:42 and sometimes you'll just pull one up,
10:44 and be like, yo, what do you think?
10:46 He'll be like, oh, try this, or like,
10:48 and then other times, we'll just meet up there,
10:50 and I'll just be like, let's start something new.
10:52 - You know, just kind of jam.
10:53 - I'll pull out the guitar, just yeah,
10:55 and start singing stuff.
10:57 It really can happen in any which way.
11:00 It just has to feel good, I guess.
11:04 - 'Cause like you said, we have a good amount of,
11:07 let's say just like beats, demos, or even,
11:10 could be like a voice memo of a piano thing.
11:12 So I've been enjoying either driving my car,
11:15 playing it, and sometimes I'll,
11:19 maybe, I don't know, maybe you're thinking
11:21 of some kind of story or lyric,
11:25 and/or today, I'm just walking,
11:29 and I got my Bose headphones on.
11:33 (laughing)
11:35 And yeah, I was just like cruising.
11:37 I played through like two to three little demos,
11:40 and I was like, oh, hold on, I'm like,
11:42 there's some, there's words coming right now.
11:45 Let me write this down.
11:49 So yeah, it's every which way.
11:51 - I love a good walking moment to think.
11:55 - Yo, especially--
11:56 - 'Cause it just releases endorphins in your brain.
11:58 Like physiologically, it makes so much sense
12:01 to brainstorm meetings, whatever you wanna do
12:03 in your life on a walk, for sure.
12:06 - Yeah, and like there's something to kinda like,
12:10 you're in New York City, you're in London.
12:13 Those kinda walks, it just kinda has this--
12:17 - Energy.
12:18 - Yeah, it-- - It's not much to take in,
12:19 right, in a big city.
12:20 - Yeah, it has like a lyric, poetic thing to it.
12:25 Those, specifically, I would say London and New York.
12:29 Walking through them.
12:29 - Don't leave out Paris, bro.
12:31 - I guess, I feel that.
12:32 Paris, this is--
12:33 - Paris is sick. - I agree.
12:34 - I love Paris.
12:35 - Yeah, LA is like, drive, drive and live.
12:37 - Look at my bracelet, it literally says Paris.
12:39 Oh, you have one on too.
12:40 'Cause we just did our Paris screening
12:41 for the concert film, and you know,
12:43 fans sometimes give us gifts.
12:45 - Aw. - Yeah.
12:46 - You did a lot of European festivals last summer.
12:49 I was wondering, is there a different vibe
12:50 at a European festival to one in the States?
12:52 Do you notice a difference?
12:53 - We actually haven't played many American festivals.
12:57 I don't know if I notice a difference
12:59 in where the festival's located.
13:02 I think just festivals in general have a specific vibe.
13:05 It's nice to have people in the crowd to win over,
13:09 'cause typically our shows, we know for sure,
13:12 almost everyone there is gonna be singing every song.
13:15 But when you see people in the crowd
13:17 and you come on stage and you're kinda like,
13:19 they don't know who you are, they're not really sure yet,
13:22 it's an extra challenge to win them over.
13:24 And it's really satisfying to watch them being won over.
13:29 I really enjoy that.
13:31 'Cause by the end of the set, they're just like,
13:33 this is tight.
13:34 - Honestly, yeah.
13:35 - So that's really fun.
13:36 - 2023 was one of the most fun years playing.
13:42 Someone was asking us actually,
13:44 while we were at one of those festivals,
13:46 so do you guys stick around and watch other bands?
13:50 We're like, yo, we go to the festival.
13:53 We paid to go to it.
13:55 - We're actually fans.
13:56 - Yeah, we run around and watch any band artists we like.
14:01 - Basically before, after our set, doesn't matter.
14:05 We're running around the festival.
14:07 It's so fun.
14:08 - Yeah, that was--
14:09 - That's so cool, 'cause sometimes artists
14:10 don't seem to have time to do that.
14:11 They kinda have to do their set
14:12 and then they're on to the next thing.
14:13 - Which obviously, if you're Kendrick Lamar,
14:17 you can't walk out.
14:19 I can kinda sneak around.
14:23 Ross is a little bit of a different story.
14:26 - I kinda have to keep moving or go backstage
14:30 or else I can't really watch the show.
14:32 Is that that point, Mike, in the career?
14:34 - Thanks, TikTok.
14:36 - Yeah.
14:37 But it's like, I still appreciate people
14:42 and it's fun to meet fans and stuff.
14:44 It can get overwhelming and that's the only,
14:47 like if it's getting to a point where it's like,
14:48 all right, I'm not even living an experience.
14:51 - Then you just kinda do it.
14:51 - I'm just working.
14:52 Then it's sometimes it's like,
14:53 all right guys, I'm gonna go.
14:55 - Would it be worse if you tried to disguise yourself?
14:57 Do you think that would draw more attention to you
14:59 if you had a big hood up or something?
15:01 Do you think that sometimes makes it more obvious?
15:03 - Yeah, it just depends where we are and what we're doing.
15:09 I think sometimes even if people know that that's me,
15:12 they can just tell that like,
15:14 oh, maybe right now he doesn't wanna be bothered.
15:16 So it just gives a signal.
15:18 - There's also, when we do that,
15:20 it's a lot of times we're like,
15:23 we got like a squad, we got a posse.
15:26 And like, when you see like-
15:28 - That's the only reason I feel like
15:29 I actually can do the festival experience
15:32 is because we have, again, back to the crew,
15:34 we have such a great crew and family
15:37 that like, we can navigate it.
15:41 - Yeah. - Sorry, what were you saying?
15:42 - I was gonna say, I think that draws more attention.
15:45 - Oh, yeah.
15:46 - You got this fucking squad coming through.
15:48 - Because you're moving in the car.
15:49 - Yeah, you got like, damn, look at these,
15:50 these guys look like they're in a band.
15:53 A couple of our crew guys are with us, they're full tatted.
15:56 They kind of look like security almost.
15:58 It's just like, what's going on here?
15:59 Oh, that's Ross.
16:01 Oh, I saw half their set, what the?
16:03 We get a pic.
16:06 - Are there any UK festivals you'd like to play?
16:08 I mean, I've got to ask, do you want to do Glastonbury?
16:11 - Oh my God, yeah.
16:12 - No, we're trying to-
16:14 - What is it, is it Reddings?
16:16 - Redding, yeah, Redding and Leeds.
16:17 - Redding and Leeds, that's it.
16:18 - They're like sister festivals, so you do both.
16:20 - I'd love to do that one for sure.
16:22 - We're, yeah, we're gonna manifest every festival actually.
16:25 - We love the festivals.
16:26 - That's probably the end goal, play every festival.
16:30 - Yeah, 'cause when I looked at your schedule
16:31 from last time, it's like,
16:32 you played so many cool festivals in Europe,
16:33 but there weren't any in the UK,
16:34 which I was like, come here.
16:36 - Yeah, honestly, we'd love to.
16:38 Festivals are just something that we're just now
16:41 kind of getting into.
16:42 We've always wanted to play them,
16:44 but now we're starting to get the invitations.
16:46 And we're really stoked about it, it's been wonderful.
16:50 - Yeah, so in October, you dropped a new song, Rumours.
16:53 Is that the start of like a new album era,
16:55 or are you still kind of feeling out
16:56 what's gonna come next?
16:57 - We're still feeling out what's to come next.
17:00 We're big experimenters when it comes to the studio time.
17:04 I feel like that song's more pop oriented.
17:07 This next song we got coming out
17:08 is more 2000s punk pop in a way.
17:13 Potentially the song after that is like disco.
17:17 - Wow, so it's eclectic.
17:20 - Yeah, and that's just how we make stuff.
17:22 Ideally, we've been talking a lot about having projects
17:29 that are specific to these kind of different vibes
17:32 that we go down.
17:33 We'll see how it unfolds,
17:35 but we're definitely still and always testing the water
17:38 and experimenting.
17:39 - The goal this year is to release three albums.
17:44 - Three albums?
17:47 - Yeah.
17:48 - It's definitely possible.
17:49 - It's easy.
17:49 - The thing is now, you can put out as much
17:52 or as little music as you want, really.
17:53 That's what artists can do.
17:54 But what makes, you said earlier,
17:57 you've got like hundreds of songs on your hard drive.
17:59 What makes one something that you actually wanna put out?
18:02 And how do you know when it's done, I guess?
18:04 - That's kinda why I'm saying three albums,
18:07 because I think realistically,
18:10 if I were to just guess,
18:12 I would say out of all these random demos,
18:14 I would say 30 should be heard for sure, without a doubt.
18:18 And then maybe, let's say you're gonna narrow that down
18:23 and be like, all right, we're gonna be really specific.
18:27 I would say 20 of those should be fucking heard for sure.
18:30 And then if you're just gonna just kinda go
18:33 the rapper route and be like, yeah,
18:35 everything we make, we're just gonna drop,
18:37 there's 60 fucking songs.
18:39 So I would say, again, half those,
18:41 we'd never see the light of day
18:42 just 'cause we're not gonna focus on 'em.
18:44 We're gonna start something new.
18:46 That's how it is.
18:47 But I would say, yes, our potential is enough songs
18:52 that fit three albums.
18:54 And I think it's just more up to
18:56 how we wanna spend that time.
19:00 - There's a lot of ideas on how to do that though.
19:03 And it does sound fun.
19:04 I wish I, honestly, I wish I could just upload,
19:09 maybe we can, but just upload demos
19:12 and then be like, oh, here's a new version.
19:15 'Cause that's really our workflow.
19:18 It's just like, it's very spur of the moment.
19:22 Our brother that we work with, Ryland,
19:24 it gets so frustrated 'cause he's just like,
19:27 I was playing him songs the other night,
19:29 like we came home, we were like in Paris, fashion week,
19:32 out at the bar, had a great night, came home,
19:36 and for some reason just felt the need to listen some demos.
19:39 And I was playing songs from like 2016, even earlier.
19:44 And he was like, I'm gonna punch you in the face.
19:46 This is so annoying.
19:48 Why is this not out?
19:49 - That's why I'm saying what I'm saying.
19:52 - I don't know, it's just, you know.
19:54 - Hey, you touched on TikTok earlier,
19:57 but you did have an amazing kind of iconic viral moment
20:00 in October, the Troye Sivan video.
20:02 How was that pitched to you?
20:04 Like when Troye got in touch with his team,
20:06 what did they say they wanted and what was the sales pitch?
20:09 - All they basically said was,
20:10 Troye wants you to meet his music video,
20:12 he'll be dressed in drag.
20:14 And I was like--
20:15 - And I was like, I'm down.
20:17 - And they were like, you gotta fly to New York tonight,
20:19 like get on a red ice tonight.
20:20 - What, it was that quick?
20:21 Wow.
20:22 - Yeah.
20:24 And you know, I tried to,
20:26 it just felt like a good thing to do.
20:28 I was like, this sounds fun, let's do it.
20:30 It ended up being super cool.
20:32 I knew it was gonna be a moment.
20:34 Definitely exceeded my expectations, but it was fun.
20:37 I'm happy that I got to be a part of it.
20:39 - Had you seen what he would look like in drag
20:41 before he actually walked out on set or was that--
20:43 - No, I pulled up to set and he was in drag already.
20:46 To be honest with you, it took me and Rylan,
20:48 Rylan who came with me, half a second to be like,
20:51 oh, that's Troye.
20:53 - 'Cause he looks very beautiful in drag
20:55 and kind of different to how you might think, I think.
20:58 - I had multiple people ask me who the girl was.
21:01 I was like, that's Troye.
21:03 - I'm doing the sequel.
21:05 You heard it here first.
21:08 - Wow.
21:09 - It was such a cool video.
21:10 - Yeah, it was cool.
21:11 I'm really happy I got to be a part of it.
21:12 - It's gonna be a meme forever, I think.
21:13 So many of those moments, you'll never get away from it.
21:15 - Yeah, it's cool, it's cool.
21:16 It's, you know, it was a moment.
21:20 And it's always cool when people dress up
21:23 as you for Halloween.
21:24 So that was kind of cool.
21:26 - When you do the sequel, they will.
21:27 - Yeah.
21:28 - I'll just ask one more question.
21:32 If you could manifest anything for the driver era in 2024,
21:35 what would it be?
21:36 - I told you.
21:37 - Three albums.
21:38 - Three albums, more festivals.
21:40 - I really liked the path that we're on.
21:43 And I am eager to watch it grow
21:47 and continue bringing light to people's lives, honestly.
21:51 And I'm not a huge goal setter.
21:53 I'm more interested in process.
21:55 So I kind of like where it is.
22:01 Obviously, it'd be super cool to be in the club or whatever
22:05 and one of these disco songs that we've made come on.
22:07 That'd be sick, honestly.
22:09 I have some house beats.
22:12 We made some house beats that feel like you're in Morocco.
22:15 It's not even a pop song.
22:18 There's not a traditional structure.
22:20 It's just a house beat.
22:21 - Here's what we should do.
22:22 We should leave them all on a hard drive.
22:24 - And just-- - That's it.
22:26 No, put them on a hard drive, hide them somewhere.
22:29 - So yeah.
22:30 - Get a scavenger hunt going.
22:31 - So that's probably the manifestation
22:34 is to figure out how to best facilitate some of these vibes.
22:39 - Could one of the three albums be like a dance album?
22:42 Could you see it happening like a full--
22:44 - I definitely could, for sure.
22:45 I love dance music.
22:47 But it's one of those things
22:48 'cause technically we're a band.
22:51 Like when we perform live, we're a band.
22:53 So that's why I said best way to facilitate it
22:56 is because I wonder if sometimes
22:57 if there's like multiple incarnations of what we,
23:02 you know, our experience in the music industry.
23:06 - A dance album, a pop punk album.
23:08 - Yeah, yeah. - Like a funk one.
23:09 - 100%.
23:10 - Amazing. - Yeah.
23:11 - Well, yeah, thank you so much for your time.
23:13 - Thank you. - It's been really fun.
23:13 Cheers. - Cheers.
23:14 (gentle music)
23:17 (electronic music)
