We find out if Porsche has improved the range and charging speeds with the 2025 Porsche Taycan Prototype.
Transcript
00:00 I'm Duncan Brady with Motor Trend and this is a 2025 Porsche Taycan prototype.
00:06 Now, last year's car, the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo, just like this one, was rated at 235 miles of range.
00:14 So not especially competitive and nowhere close to what you'd get from the 400 plus miles in a Tesla Model S or a Lucid Air.
00:24 Those sort of flagship industry leading electric luxury sedans.
00:29 But, Porsche has made some changes.
00:32 So there's more battery capacity, there's faster charging, and yes, there's a lot more range.
00:39 Now, I'm gonna drive this car six hours and hundreds of miles today to verify some of these claims.
00:46 I'll let you know how it goes.

01:14 So we just charged the 2025 Porsche Taycan prototype and I think we just set a record.
01:21 So we just charged from 6 to 85 percent in a little over 20 minutes, added about 240 miles of range,
01:32 if you can comprehend that, and here's the knockout figure.
01:37 So a Lucid Air, highest range EV in the world.
01:42 That charges at a max charge rate of 200 kilowatts.
01:45 Very impressive.
01:47 Tesla Model S Plaid, 250 kilowatts.
01:51 Very impressive.
01:52 This Porsche Taycan, we just saw charge speeds as high as 323 kilowatts,
01:58 which to my knowledge, makes it the fastest charging EV in the world.
02:04 So yeah, you might be able to go a little farther in a Lucid or a Tesla,
02:08 but remember, none of us are driving 400, 500 miles without taking a stop to charge or get a snack or use the bathroom.
02:18 So I think charge speed matters a little more and right now, the Porsche Taycan is king.
02:24 So sometimes we'll get a mid-cycle refresh where you got a whole new face and it looks really dramatic
02:29 and it seems like a whole new car, but it's not.
02:33 This is not the case.
02:34 The 2025 Taycan is a mid-cycle refresh that looks almost identical, unless I'm looking real close.
02:42 This is the same car, but there are some serious, serious changes where it counts.
02:48 Remember in my intro a couple of minutes ago where I said this car had 235 miles of range last year?
02:55 That is no longer the case, my friends.
02:58 I am happy to report that we got over 300 miles of range today.
03:03 That's a massive improvement and by some back of the envelope calculations,
03:09 the battery is significantly bigger, this wheel design is a lot more aerodynamic,
03:14 and we're charging way, way faster.
03:18 This is the fastest charging EV on sale and combine that with over 300 miles range
03:25 and the driving dynamics of a Porsche and the Taycan already drove great.
03:30 Not only is this a drastically improved EV,
03:34 this is a seriously compelling alternative to a Tesla Model S.
