00:00 In a tragic turn of events, Bollywood personality Poonam Pandey has passed away at the age of 32,
00:06 succumbing to cervical cancer, as announced by her team on Instagram.
00:11 This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the pressing need to address cervical cancer,
00:16 reportedly the second most common cancer affecting Indian women.
00:21 In her Budget 2024 speech on February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
00:26 emphasized the government's commitment to promoting immunization against cervical cancer.
00:32 The minister stated, "Our government will encourage vaccination for girls in the age group
00:38 of 9 to 14 years for the prevention of cervical cancer.
00:42 This vaccine targets specific strains linked to cervical cancer, aiming to safeguard the health of young girls."
00:49 "Cervical cancer vaccination. Our government will encourage vaccination for girls in the age group of 9 to 14 years
00:59 for prevention of cervical cancer."
01:03 Cervical cancer primarily arises from persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus,
01:13 which is HPV.
01:15 According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), HPV, a commonly sexually transmitted virus,
01:22 affects at least half of sexually active individuals at some point.
01:26 However, few individuals develop cervical cancer, not all.
01:30 Notably, HPV type 16 and 18 are recognized the most predominant, high-risk genotypes
01:38 contributing to 70% of all cervical cancers.
01:41 India, with a vast population of women aged 15 and older, faces a significant risk of cervical cancer.
01:49 In 2020 alone, 1,23,907 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer,
01:56 leading to 77,348 deaths, as per data from the HPV Information Center.
02:03 To combat this, effective screening tests and HPV vaccination play pivotal roles in the prevention,
02:10 early detection of cervical cancer significantly improves treatment outcomes,
02:15 ensuring long-term survival and a good health quality of life.
02:19 India's first indigenously developed quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine,
02:25 which is Cervavac, was launched in 2023.
02:29 The Union Health Ministry on January 13 announced plans for an HPV vaccination campaign,
02:35 recommending vaccination for girls aged 9 to 14 as part of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) in 2022.
02:44 However, challenges persist, including stigma surrounding HPV,
02:49 which could hinder efforts to combat cervical cancer.
02:52 A recent study from Kenya highlighted the intersectional stigma associated with HPV with HIV,
02:59 potentially leading to increased cervical cancer risk behaviors.
03:03 As we mourn the loss of Poonam Pandey, her battle with cervical cancer underscores the importance of raising awareness,
03:12 promoting vaccination and improving access to screening to protect the health of women across the nation.
