00:00 Edinburgh became Scotland's first local authority to enforce against pavement parking today,
00:06 Monday 29th January. So we went up to Craiglockhart to see the enforcement in action and also
00:12 to speak to some locals and campaigners who welcomed this new law.
00:17 Okay, well pavements are for people, for pedestrians, they're not places where cars should be, they
00:25 inconvenience everyone really and they can be quite a hazard for a lot of people, some
00:29 of the people that are here today. So this has been a long battle to get a parking ban
00:36 on pavements, so it's really good to celebrate that today.
00:39 Happy day then?
00:40 A very happy day, so obviously with the proof of the pudding in the enforcement, but I think
00:46 a lot of motorists have kind of realised that it's really not a sensible thing to do to
00:51 park on the pavement, so hopefully people will voluntarily just keep off the pavements
00:56 and leave them for pedestrians.
00:58 Yeah, so it's really difficult if you're a parent pushing a buggy or a pram to negotiate
01:02 the pavement when there's cars parked, you have to go into the road, which is obviously
01:04 quite dangerous, especially when you've got kids, so it's really good that they've brought
01:08 this ban in today.
01:10 Today marks the start of the enforcement of Edinburgh's pavement parking ban, long, long
01:15 overdue and I'm actually quite excited about the prospect of, you know, because this is
01:19 a huge step towards making Edinburgh a more equal city.
01:23 With the pavement parking ban now in place in Edinburgh, supporters of the scheme will
01:27 be hoping to see less cars parked on our pavements.
01:30 Thank you.
