Labour's Anneliese Dodds said "lessons must be learnt" following the Nottingham triple murder. The Labour Party chair said both "gaps in policing" and "gaps in the mental health system" have created huge problems. It comes as the attorney general's office has received a referral arguing the sentence was too lenient, after the killer was given a hospital order.

00:00 I think it's really important that lessons are learned from this and really
00:05 critical actually that we get an understanding of what happened in the
00:10 mental health system where this individual had received treatment
00:16 previously. My understanding is that there was awareness of his behaviour
00:22 very much within the system. Now that needs to be looked at very carefully and
00:28 then of course also the policing response as well. Ultimately
00:33 we've got to learn from this. We have had, and I don't want to comment
00:37 on this specific case, but we have had other situations where unfortunately
00:42 gaps in the mental health system have created huge problems, also
00:49 gaps in policing. As you would expect, Labour has set out measures
00:53 we believe need to be taken so that we're really buttressing that provision
00:58 of mental health care, especially for those who are very seriously unwell and
01:04 also of course around policing where sadly that blue line has just got
01:09 thinner and thinner over time.
