00:00 Hello, it's Alistair from New Sheffield Star. We're here today with the headteacher of Brookhill
00:04 Infant School. We're here to talk about the new traffic calming measures that have been
00:08 put outside on the road here. What problems have you been having in the past?
00:12 Well, good morning Alistair. So we've been campaigning for a while to make it safer for
00:16 our children to get into school. The problems that we've had have been cars illegally parking,
00:22 especially at drop-off and pick-up times from school. The road is very narrow, there are
00:27 parking bays on the road as well, so it makes it really difficult when people are illegally
00:32 parked for children to see round the cars, and especially parents that have children
00:36 in boggies, to see round and get safely across the road. So that's the reason why we campaigned
00:43 for some help.
00:44 What are we going to see rolled out in the next couple of months?
00:48 So I got in touch with Adeel Zahman from Sheffield Transport, and he has helped us to contact
00:55 ward councillors for Roomhill, Charrow Vale, who have funded some parking signs for us,
01:01 which we are able to put out each morning and each evening at collection and pick-up
01:06 times. And actually, we've seen a reduction in illegal parking because of that, because
01:13 the cars that were parking illegally were pulling up onto the pavement, but now that
01:18 those parking signs are there, obviously they're unable to do that.
01:23 What differences has it made today at least, since day one?
01:26 A massive difference actually. We have had these signs for a little while, although they've
01:30 officially been handed to us today, so we've been trialling that out, and it's made a massive
01:34 difference. And you can see the traffic slowing and looking and thinking twice, and travelling
01:42 round to find a proper parking bay to park in. I accept it is really difficult for some
01:48 of our parents to drop off and pick up times, I understand that, but our main goal here
01:54 is to keep our children safe.
01:57 Thank you. It's Alistair from Sheffield Star. We're just asking people about the new traffic
02:00 car. We're just down here by Brookville Infant School. What was it like beforehand?
02:04 Chaotic. Previously, there were a lot of cars that came along this stretch of road. I know
02:10 it's difficult for people to park, but it would be nice if there weren't as many cars.
02:16 Was it as bad as dodging between, or was it just a bit of a traffic jam each morning?
02:21 Yeah, it's a combination of the idling cars, that was one right here, and the pollution,
02:27 but also just the sheer density, really.
02:30 I imagine you walked to school yourself?
02:32 Yeah, we walked to school. We're not far from it. I'm lucky enough to be in a position where
02:35 I don't have to race off elsewhere.
02:38 Is there any more you'd like to see done?
02:41 Yeah, I mean the school streets should be across the city really, as much as we can
02:46 campaign for. I understand this is a thorough road, but it's become a bit of a rat run for
02:50 many.
