00:00 I do understand there is mountains of evidence which proves the claim.
00:07 But there have been lobbyist groups or say there have been contradictory scientific research
00:13 which now and then make headlines.
00:15 Say for example, we have been carnivore, so it was recently on the Times of India, we
00:22 have evolved as a carnivore and other adding being meat is not as unhealthy as we see.
00:32 So I mean I do understand say from past 40-50 years there have been mountains of evidences
00:39 but say now and then there are some evidences which contradict the claim.
00:44 So which make people believe that there is a kind of confusion within the scientific
00:50 community so what do you have to say on that?
00:54 40s, 50s, right into the 60s in the last century it was still being upheld that cigarette smoking
01:09 keeps you vital and active and it was a popular belief that cigarette smoking specifically
01:23 among men is a driver of masculinity as well.
01:35 When it started becoming evident that cigarette smoking has a whole range of very very harmful
01:49 effects when cancer cases started piling up.
01:58 Then the tobacco industry started sponsoring lot of so called scientific reports that would
02:12 say that there is nothing wrong with tobacco and that cigarettes are not at all harmful
02:17 for human beings and they kept up the propaganda for another 10-20 years almost till the end
02:28 of 70s.
02:33 They kept trying it till it became ridiculously impossible for them to keep pressing on with
02:45 their claims.
02:48 So why will they not do it?
02:52 Their money is at stake, greed can make man do anything, greed can make man present any
02:59 kind of pseudo scientific evidence which is nothing but blatant cheating and lying.
03:05 Most of the reports that still try to defend meat consumption are sponsored by groups having
03:15 vested interests.
03:16 Take the case of climate change as well.
03:21 That climate change is happening and there is a clear scientific basis for it was evident
03:29 not today but even 4 decades back.
03:35 But then the fossil fuel industry kept sponsoring report after report that said firstly that
03:42 there is no climate change.
03:48 Then they said, oh there probably is climate change but it does not have to do with human
03:53 activity.
03:56 Global warming they said is not anthropogenic.
04:00 Even today they come up with something or the other that would confuse the population.
04:12 That's their objective.
04:13 To not let it become certain, absolutely certain, conclusively and finally certain that climate
04:22 change is happening and man is responsible for it.
04:28 If you can instill some doubt in the mind of the compulsive cigarette smoker regarding
04:49 whether or not cigarettes are harmful, you have given him a lease of fresh hope.
04:57 He will say, you know, it is not yet quite proven that cigarettes are harmful.
05:04 So I feel licensed and entitled to continue with my cigarettes till a final proof is established.
05:15 That's the little ray of hope that the addicted and the greedy mind needs.
05:24 The issue has to be closed, sealed and stamped.
05:33 It is final that neat eating is stupid from all kinds of reasons and they will not let
05:50 that final conclusion arrive soon.
05:53 It will arrive just as it arrived in the case of cigarette smoking, just as it finally had
06:02 to be accepted by the tobacco industry that cigarette smoking is highly injurious.
06:09 Today you see on cigarette packs, not only is there a warning, but there is a gruesome
06:16 warning.
06:19 There is that terrible face, cancer struck.
06:31 It was unimaginable that the tobacco industry would agree to it four decades back.
06:37 Today they have had to agree because now there is popular scientific consensus, but they
06:43 agreed only after claiming millions of lives by spreading misinformation.
06:57 Same with climate change.
06:59 Now everybody is coming around to agree that yes, there is climate change and climate change
07:07 is due to human activity, but they are trying to delay the inevitable.
07:17 They are trying to delay that there would be ultimately a consensus.
07:21 That is also what the meat industry is trying now.
07:25 50 years back it was the tobacco industry, two decades back and still it is the fossil
07:37 fuel industry and we have the meat industry which will continue definitely with its propaganda
07:51 and lies right till the end of the next decade maybe.
08:04 They will evidently have to agree and submit, but then by that time they would have caused
08:12 just too much and probably irreversible damage.
08:19 The thing is to speeden the process.
08:24 The thing is to bring it more swiftly and more deeply into the popular consciousness
08:36 that what meat eating really is.
