00:00 El Niño's effect is already felt in the production of sugar in some parts of the country.
00:05 The Sugar Regulatory Administration confirmed that there is a buffer stock of sugar and that its price does not need to be increased.
00:11 Here's the first news, Bernadette Reyes.
00:14 Some parts of this plant are already dried in the Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
00:22 Because of the effect of El Niño, the amount of sugar that is extracted from the plants is already less.
00:28 According to the Sugar Regulatory Administration,
00:30 1.75 million metric tons or more than 100,000 tons of sugar is being produced by farmers.
00:41 Sometimes 20-30% or even more decrease in the tonnage.
00:45 Our progressive farmers in Negros, everybody's been complaining of a drop.
00:50 In Batangas, the same thing. So this is all related to weather.
00:55 Water is a big thing for the growth of crops, according to the United Sugar Producers Federation of the Philippines or UNIFED.
01:02 But because of the effect of El Niño,
01:04 The effect of this drought will be in the next couple of years, starting September of this year all the way to 2025.
01:11 That's when we'll feel that we're short again.
01:14 It is concerning, if you have less production, there will be less money for the farmers.
01:18 That's how it's going to be and we're going to be importing more sugar.
01:23 According to the Sugar Regulatory Administration,
01:25 even if the production of sugar decreases, consumers should not worry.
01:30 Even businesses are using sugar because there is a sufficient buffer stock of 200,000 metric tons.
01:38 The drop in production, if it happens, we have the buffer stock.
01:44 So retail is not supposed to go up based on that.
01:49 That will stay until milling ends.
01:52 So we will always have a buffer because if it's milling season, we harvest,
01:58 our production is overconsumption.
02:00 Meanwhile, President Bongbong Marcos approved a 5 billion pesos fund to buy sugar from farmers through the Philippine International Trading Corporation.
02:13 It is expected to be sold in the market from June to September before the new milling season begins.
02:20 This is the first news, Bernadette Reyes for GMA Integrated News.
