00:00 We are back here, Ritz and Rumble, Richmond, Virginia.
00:03 We have got three fights left.
00:07 Glenda Zern is taking on Ernesto Guerrero.
00:12 I'll tell you what, Glenda Zern has got a big,
00:16 big following here in Richmond.
00:18 He's got a big camp and a big team.
00:20 I am joined by Kujo Sigman.
00:24 As always, Coach Eric has now gone to his training duties,
00:28 but we thank him for his first half, and we're underway.
00:30 Kujo, what are you expecting?
00:32 I think it's going to be a quick fight.
00:34 I am impressed, Ernesto, the first guy on the card,
00:37 with more fights than I have.
00:39 Pretty impressive, 72 fights, that's a lot.
00:42 He has fought 72 times, 23 KOs, and here's the thing,
00:46 he's fought some good competition.
00:47 He's fought 21 undefeated fighters.
00:50 72 fights, you know, you're making a living.
00:52 He's a throwback.
00:54 Glenda Zern is pretty powerful.
00:56 Former world champion with his wife in the corner.
01:00 His wife is in the corner.
01:02 Former undisputed middleweight champion,
01:06 Franchon Cruz, Zern.
01:08 Guerrero is offering a lot more resistance
01:22 than I expected, as Zern's own offense.
01:26 Yeah, and again, the experience factor is one
01:30 where you can't take that 72 fights for granted, right?
01:34 He's seen a lot of things in the ring.
01:36 Oh yeah, this is not a guy you'd want to put
01:38 a two and O prospect in against, that's for sure.
01:41 Absolutely not, and that goes to say,
01:45 we did not stay at the top of this fight.
01:47 It is an eight round fight, so as you mentioned,
01:50 in the previous six round fight,
01:51 you've mentioned the pace is different, right?
01:54 - Yes, I mean, these guys are fighting
01:56 a really exciting type of fight.
02:00 This is my style of fight.
02:02 - Oh, nice uppercut right there by Guerrero
02:06 that got in, in between the guard.
02:08 - I think this fight will be able to be appealing
02:12 to the hardcore boxer fan along with the casual fan.
02:15 It's got a little bit of elements that appeal to both.
02:19 - And another great example of what is happening
02:22 here in Richmond, Ritz and Rumble.
02:24 You've seen just about every type of fight you can see.
02:28 These are, again, savvy veterans.
02:30 You're talking about Dizerne, who is, I believe,
02:34 35 years old, and Guerrero, who's 34.
02:36 They've both seen a lot in the ring.
02:38 - Where Dizerne's from, he might not be getting
02:41 all his experience in the fights.
02:43 They got hard sparring up there in the area.
02:45 He's from a lot of top level talent,
02:47 multiple world champions, so he's been in with some,
02:51 I doubt Guerrero can show him any tricks
02:54 that he hasn't seen.
02:55 - You bring up a good point, and I do want to circle back
03:00 on that, there's a lot of action there.
03:02 There's some jabs, oh, good right hand there.
03:05 But Dizerne is moving forward.
03:08 He seems to kind of have that ring generalship
03:11 we talked about earlier in the fights.
03:13 He knows what he's doing.
03:14 He seems to be controlling the pace.
03:15 - He's certainly in the ring.
03:18 He's just kind of walking him down.
03:21 Guerrero hasn't done anything to get his respect,
03:23 but Guerrero's definitely game
03:24 and giving a good account of himself.
03:26 - And there's Guerrero, lets his hands go
03:29 at the end of the round there.
03:31 Really good round.
03:33 Sometimes when you say the word tactical round,
03:37 you think not a lot of action,
03:39 but I think there was a lot of punches thrown,
03:41 but this was a very tactical round.
03:43 - It was an entertaining round,
03:45 and I also think, don't forget that Glenn also,
03:49 I'm not sure if they still as far,
03:50 but I know he spars with his wife.
03:52 - He does spar with his wife.
03:54 - That's also top level sparring.
03:55 - You've done a lot in the boxing game.
03:57 You've done a lot in the boxing game, Cujo.
04:00 Have you ever imagined sparring with your significant other?
04:03 - I wish I would have sparred my ex-wife over there.
04:07 (laughing)
04:10 - You also mentioned a good thing
04:12 that I want to bring back up,
04:14 because when you talk about
04:19 kind of the training experience,
04:21 the gyms that you train in,
04:22 the level of competition you see in a world-class gym,
04:27 it's different.
04:29 So even like you said,
04:30 you might not be getting as many pro rounds in,
04:33 but those training rounds can be tougher
04:35 than some of the pro rounds.
04:36 - Yeah, I mean, as I mentioned earlier,
04:39 I think our amateur program in the United States
04:41 is just in shambles.
04:42 I don't like it.
04:43 I don't put any of my fighters through it.
04:45 One of the coaches at my gym does,
04:46 but Austin Bionda had no amateur fights,
04:49 and I just thought it was ruining.
04:50 And I actually think getting that high-level sparring
04:53 experience is much superior to amateur fight.
04:56 - As we see, these guys are exchanging body blows.
05:01 They're exchanging upstairs blows.
05:03 No one is really given any ground.
05:05 I love this matchup in regards to,
05:08 it seems like equal strength a little bit.
05:11 Maybe Desern has a little bit of a strength advantage,
05:15 but they're both given and taken right now.
05:17 Really good action in the middle of the ring.
05:20 - Desern's punches are just so much more compact,
05:22 and I think that's what's really making the difference
05:24 in these changes.
05:25 - Really good work to the bottom
05:37 from Desern right there to the body.
05:39 The left hook that got to the head.
05:43 (crowd shouting)
05:46 - The Desern corner just yelled out something
05:51 that I thought was really pointed.
05:53 They said, they think that Desern has a movement advantage.
05:56 They said he can't move like that,
05:58 and you're starting to see it kind of show out here.
06:01 - I mean, even there with that combination from Guerrero,
06:06 you can just see that the punches
06:08 just aren't quite as tight or as compact.
06:10 At least, certainly a live dog here,
06:12 but just the technicality and the preciseness of the punches
06:16 is just a different level for Desern.
06:21 - Desern now getting some uppercuts in, some body work.
06:27 Here's the thing, Guerrero has a really good guard,
06:31 but, and you see this in a lot of fights,
06:34 where they say you don't necessarily
06:35 have to hit the body flush.
06:36 What you gotta do, oh, there's a good uppercut
06:39 that snuck in there, but what you gotta do
06:41 is just hit something, right?
06:43 Hit the gloves, hit the body, hit the elbows,
06:46 and it seems like Desern is really taking that approach
06:48 to heart.
06:49 - Desern's working here, and he's starting to step over
06:52 to the right, try to get a little angle every now and then.
06:54 He's trying to see what Guerrero's gonna do about it.
06:57 I've seen him get it maybe once or twice this round,
06:59 but he hasn't punched off of it.
07:01 So I'm really interested to see if he keeps working.
07:03 As far as Guerrero's defense is concerned,
07:05 like you said, he has 72 fights,
07:07 and he's lived to tell about it,
07:09 so I hope he's developed some defense at this point.
07:13 - He really has, but it looks like Desern
07:17 is still figuring out that he can hit something.
07:21 And oftentimes, when you're watching boxing matches,
07:25 there's a little level of frustration
07:27 when they're not pulling punches.
07:29 Desern is not in that camp, and he looks,
07:31 oh, now he's sitting down on the ropes.
07:33 Really good round.
07:36 After two rounds, I'm gonna say, Cujo,
07:39 that I think I would give both of those rounds
07:42 to Glenn Desern.
07:42 - Oh, Handley, beautiful savagery.
07:45 I love the way he's fighting, that tight, compact, pressing.
07:52 Just, I'm really attracted to that type of style of fighting.
07:57 - This is Desern's second fight this year.
08:04 He's coming off a third-round stoppage on January 20th.
08:09 So, January, September, pretty significant layoff.
08:13 Now, and again, like you said, a lot of work in that gym.
08:17 But if you're 35 years old like Glenn Desern is,
08:21 he's been a professional for over 10 years now,
08:24 what type of work rate would you like to see him
08:28 start cranking out?
08:30 - You're referring to Desern?
08:31 - Yes.
08:32 - I mean, I think what he's doing is great for eight rounds.
08:36 I think he's starting to try to probe to see.
08:38 I really felt like he was trying to see
08:40 if he could step to his right and get an angle on him,
08:43 throw a left hook underneath.
08:44 But I mean, I could be reading that wrong,
08:45 but I kind of felt that from his body language last round.
08:48 - No, it looks good.
08:49 He's definitely circling here.
08:52 - What gym is he out of?
08:53 Is he out of Headbangers?
08:54 - That I would have to look up.
08:58 He is, it is confirmed.
09:06 He's out of Headbangers.
09:07 - Yeah, so you know, the reason I thought that
09:10 he's got that real high guard,
09:11 it kind of reminded me of Lamont Peterson a little bit
09:15 back in the day.
09:16 I thought I sensed a little bit of that
09:28 Barry Hunter-esque methodology
09:31 in the way he was walking him down.
09:32 - And that's a good point,
09:35 because certain gyms have certain styles, certain feels.
09:40 And like you said, just by looking at him,
09:42 you can kind of see the Headbangers imprint.
09:45 Is that what you're saying?
09:46 - Yeah, yeah, like, you know, I think of Lamont Peterson
09:49 and I felt like there were certain things
09:51 and mannerisms in the way he was moving
09:52 that kind of paid homage to that style.
09:54 - And Guerrero seems like he snuck in a right hand there.
10:00 Some jab jab to the body.
10:01 (crowd cheering)
10:04 Nothing to seem really back to Zern
10:09 off of his game plan though.
10:11 And that game plan seems to be moving forward,
10:13 walking him down, and clean, effective short punching.
10:17 - One thing I'm really impressed with by Guerrero
10:28 is, you know, a lot of opponents with this many fights,
10:30 they just come to survive.
10:32 But I think that's probably been a lot of his successes.
10:35 You know, he's keeping the Zern honest here.
10:38 He's throwing some punches, he's still,
10:40 you know, he's still dangerous to him.
10:42 So the Zern's not just walking forward
10:43 and working him like a heavy bag.
10:45 - No, not at all.
10:46 And again, you'd mentioned as well,
10:49 different circumstances, right,
10:52 come with different types of fights,
10:55 different type of environments,
10:56 different type of management and people.
10:58 When you look at the 72 fights,
11:00 I mean, Guerrero has, of those, he's 34 wins.
11:04 So I mean, he's, and he's gone the distance
11:06 quite a few times.
11:08 - Yeah, you know, to a casual boxing fan,
11:10 you know, that might sound horrible,
11:11 but I mean, this guy, 99.9% of people on the planet
11:16 get in a fist fight with this guy,
11:17 they're losing their life.
11:19 - Right.
11:19 (crowd talking)
11:22 - Oh, there's a little three punch combination
11:37 there for the Zern.
11:38 Now, very interesting round, I would say,
11:45 because I would clearly say the Zern
11:48 kind of carried the first two rounds.
11:50 This round had a little bit different feel, I would say.
11:52 The third round, it seemed like Guerrero
11:53 got some really good work in.
11:55 - You know, I think the Zern was maybe
11:56 stepping off the gas a little bit or something.
11:58 I mean, me personally, you know,
12:01 I'm working on commentating the fight.
12:02 I haven't been scoring this one intently,
12:04 but I would be shocked if the Zern
12:06 did not get the nod from the judges in that round either.
12:08 I just feel like he's in complete control here.
12:11 But myself as a promoter, you know, with Guerrero,
12:15 he's a guy that could always find a place
12:18 on one of my cards, find a guy that he could fight.
12:21 I mean, this guy's a consummate professional.
12:24 - He does.
12:25 I mean, he's got a lot of fights
12:27 and he's 23 KOs of those 34 wins.
12:31 He's gone, again, the number of times he's gone the distance
12:35 might be another indicator about, like you said,
12:38 this guy's not coming in to mail it in.
12:40 Glendon Zern is gonna have to really
12:42 step on the gas, I think.
12:43 (crowd cheering)
12:47 And Guerrero starts off the round with a combination.
12:49 Really good pace to this fight.
13:04 Really good pace and a lot of good work.
13:07 When you're talking about eight rounds
13:10 and you're using this pace, this speed,
13:14 it may actually, conditioning is just such a big factor.
13:17 - This is a very exciting fight, a lot of punches.
13:22 Helps that they're in the smaller weight class.
13:25 If this was a heavyweight fight,
13:27 I'd be shocked if there was still a lot of contention.
13:28 - Yeah, they are fighting at the bantamweight 118 limit.
13:33 - And also the shocks, when I look down at that,
13:35 these guys are pretty well muscled in front of that height.
13:38 I'm shocked that they're weighing in at 118.
13:40 Yeah, I think, you know, see there's that step right
13:53 I was talking about earlier.
13:54 - That's a great step right, exactly right.
13:56 - Yeah, he tried to look for that left hook underneath.
13:58 - And he followed it up with the right hand too.
14:00 And if you're listening closely,
14:05 you might be able to even hear it,
14:06 that step right is being yelled,
14:08 they're calling that out in the corner.
14:10 - Yeah, he was kind of probing for that early,
14:13 maybe in the first or second round.
14:14 I'm surprised it took him so long to go to it.
14:17 Maybe he was trying to desensitize Guerrero to that.
14:20 - Good body shot with a little straight right.
14:25 - The Zurn's still in complete control here,
14:27 but I do sense a little bit of fatigue.
14:29 - Get your right elbow up, stand right up.
14:32 - That's a good stick there,
14:41 the Zurn using the jab, using some,
14:43 there's that step around again, Cujo.
14:45 Now that you've identified it,
14:47 he's starting to really put that in the third round.
14:51 (crowd yelling)
14:53 - You had me a little confused, it's round four.
15:01 - Oh, sorry.
15:02 So in the fourth round, he found the step around,
15:05 'cause he's definitely using it effectively.
15:07 - Yeah, he tested those waters a little bit early,
15:10 but he waged it up.
15:11 - Good right hand, good left.
15:12 (crowd yelling)
15:15 - The Zurn has about four people yelling instructions
15:34 from the corner, and I'll tell you,
15:37 he is taking it all in and using some upstairs,
15:41 downstairs combination, just like it's being called out
15:44 from, I think, about four people on the sidelines.
15:48 Let's check out these replays here, Cujo,
16:00 to see what you're seeing.
16:10 - And they kinda hit him with that right hook there
16:12 to get his momentum going one way,
16:13 and then stepped right on him.
16:15 Great left hook.
16:17 - Good left hook.
16:19 Now I wanna see if they have a replay of that step around,
16:22 'cause he really did find some really strong footwork,
16:27 and the interesting thing about that stepping to the right
16:32 and that step around being so effective,
16:33 it just gives the fighter that executes it well
16:37 a really good angle as soon as he does it, right?
16:39 - Yeah, I like that left hook to the body,
16:40 between the elbows there,
16:41 because your fist can fit so much easier
16:43 than throwing it as an uppercut.
16:45 - And we are heading into,
16:49 I wanna make sure I got it right,
16:51 we're heading into round five of eight.
16:53 Look at this now,
17:01 as they're getting a little loose
17:03 and a little excited with the defense now.
17:08 And Guerrero gives him some leather in return.
17:10 - See him there, push his hand through the skin.
17:21 - Now there it is, and there's a shot to the body,
17:23 you're exactly right, Fugo.
17:25 You saw him looking for that.
17:26 - Yeah, that's what I was getting ready to say,
17:28 and he went straight down to it.
17:29 - And you could tell, you could tell,
17:32 he really looked over, and you could see him looking for it,
17:36 looking for that specific shot.
17:38 He nailed him right to the right side of the body,
17:41 the left side of the body there,
17:43 and this one might be over.
17:44 This one might be over.
17:47 Now Desern's gotta go back and get him,
17:51 and I wanna see if he hunts the body again.
17:53 - Oh my goodness. - There it is,
17:56 it seems open.
17:57 Look at this, and Desern's putting it on.
18:05 - Oh, and they're, and we got it,
18:07 they got it back off there.
18:09 They are calling that a knockdown.
18:16 Would you call that a knockdown, Fugo?
18:18 - You know, I couldn't see their feet over here,
18:20 so I'm not sure.
18:21 - And they're gonna stop the fight.
18:25 There is some, a little bit of protest there
18:28 in the Guerrero corner.
18:29 - Well, Guerrero himself quit.
18:31 He told referee Michelle Myers
18:33 he did not want to continue.
18:35 And that is going to be a knockout victory
18:38 for Glenn Desern.
18:40 I would say very, very,
18:45 I would be interested to see the cards here.
18:47 I'm guessing, like you were guessing, Fugo,
18:49 it was probably a shutout getting to the knockdown,
18:52 but here's the replay.
18:54 Let's see if we can see that first knockdown,
18:57 because Glenn Desern really hunted out that shot.
19:01 Look at him.
19:02 There's a good uppercut there,
19:04 but it was the body shot.
19:06 It was the body shot that took him down.
19:07 - Well, hold on.
19:09 No, I don't think so.
19:09 - Oh, it was the uppercut.
19:10 - Yeah, no, he never hit him in the body,
19:12 but just previous to that,
19:14 he had pushed his head over
19:15 and looked for that left shot to the body,
19:17 but he never hit him with it.
19:19 - So that's a great replay there,
19:21 'cause that uppercut was flush.
19:22 This is the end of the fight here.
19:24 And I don't know, what did you see there, Cujo?
19:27 - I think Guerrero's looking for a way out.
19:31 - Yep.
19:32 So it was the uppercut.
19:34 The uppercut got him flush,
19:36 really knocked him off,
19:37 and then Glenn Desern really put the pressure on after that.
19:42 - Yeah, so I think he even fooled us with that.
19:44 He had pushed his head over with that left hand,
19:46 he looked down for the body shot,
19:48 but he stepped back over
19:49 and hit him with that right uppercut.
19:50 - Well, I'm glad I saw the replay too,
19:52 because had I not seen it,
19:54 I really would have thought that that body shot
19:57 was the thing that kind of killed him over.
19:59 - You know, I was wondering why Michelle
20:00 was getting him to do the step to the side and whatnot,
20:02 but she had obviously seen it was clearly a head shot,
20:05 so I think she's a high-level referee,
20:08 so she was doing the right thing.
20:11 - Absolutely.
20:12 And so this moves Glenn Desern to 17 and three and one.
20:16 This is his 12th knockout.
20:19 And I will tell you this,
20:22 I wanna see more.
20:23 I wanna see more of Glenn Desern.
20:25 I wanna see him in even tougher fights.
20:28 - I mean, with a record like that,
20:30 in that weight class,
20:31 he could fight at the highest levels.
20:33 I mean, 118 pounds, that's a very scarce weight class,
20:37 especially in the United States.
20:38 - I do agree with you,
20:42 'cause I'm looking at his arms.
20:44 His legs might be 118,
20:46 but his arms definitely do not look 118.
20:48 I mean, look at Glenn Desern's arms.
20:50 They look like he's a little bit bigger
20:53 than that 118 limit.
20:54 - He's probably doing 100 pull-ups at a time.
20:56 (laughing)
20:57 - Absolutely, absolutely.
21:00 So, hey, look,
21:01 we're gonna take it to the ring
21:04 to see if we can hear about Glenn Desern's knockout victory,
21:09 but we are really loading up for our co-main events now.
21:12 We've only got two fights left,
21:14 and I know we're both very, very excited
