Steve Clifford Postgame vs. San Antonio
Transcript
00:00 >> I think maybe they got, they had no more than one team.
00:03 You were able to collect yourselves there in the fourth,
00:05 what kind of led to the difference making down the stretch for you guys?
00:08 >> Well, we got PJ back in the game.
00:12 We struggled there when he got his four.
00:15 We did a good job for a while, but it was right at the beginning of the fourth, right?
00:21 So a couple of those guys that played the holes for her, we got them out.
00:24 And he helped, and then obviously, I mean, we made a bunch of,
00:28 the Brandon Miller corner three was a huge shot.
00:32 Obviously, the Melo drop.
00:36 I mean, maybe the biggest play of the game, though,
00:37 was the PJ Washington defensive rebound in traffic, plus three.
00:42 And then we had a good outlet pass, too.
00:43 So we made a lot of good plays there at the end of the game, which was important.
00:49 >> I know it was entirely out of necessity starting PJ at the five tonight.
00:53 It seemed like it really got the offense going, got him going early a little bit.
00:57 What did you like about what you saw offensively, and
00:59 then also how they responded, at least in the first three and
01:02 a half quarters defensively?
01:03 >> Yeah, I mean, the defense wasn't very good.
01:07 The rebounding was good, though.
01:09 So you're just not gonna, I mean, in our league, you just can't play small.
01:15 I mean, people say downsize.
01:20 One team's done it where they really downsize, and that was Draymond.
01:23 And there's nobody else like him.
01:26 So you can play smaller and skilled at times, but
01:30 you're not gonna be able to defend, or I'll just put it this way.
01:33 Nobody's been able to do it so far.
01:35 So it's good on offense, and it makes it hard on defense.
01:40 >> Building blocks off of this as you get the quick turnaround with Philly tomorrow.
01:43 >> Well, it's just good for confidence.
01:48 Our group's been through a lot.
01:49 I'm really proud of them, the way they've hung in there.
01:51 We've kept competing and working hard.
01:55 So it's good, it's just, you play every other night, and
01:58 we're in a brutal stretch here.
02:00 We only have two days off to get it until after the All-Star break.
02:03 So it's important to win just to feel good.
02:07 And it was Mello's first game back at home, and so all those things are positive.
02:14 >> You mentioned Mello, I think he has 70% of your offense in terms of count for
02:19 it, let's say scoring fourth quarter there.
02:21 What do you see from him fourth quarter overall?
02:24 >> Yeah, I mean, if you go back to before he got hurt,
02:27 he was first in the NBA in crunch time scoring, and
02:30 he was first in crunch time assists.
02:33 So he's been doing that all year.
02:36 If you look at his shot attempts, he only took 13 shots.
02:41 But I think going into the fourth quarter,
02:43 he had taken like the fourth or fifth most attempts on our team.
02:46 But that's when he has been more aggressive, has been in the fourth quarters.
02:50 >> And obviously tonight, Nick Richards being out,
02:52 just what do you see from him in terms of his health?
02:54 Is it something you can beat more in one game?
02:57 >> No idea.
02:58 We'll see, the more you try, you end up warmed up and
03:01 then it just wasn't feeling good, so.
03:03 >> Good.
03:05 >> Thank you.
