00:00 The man was benched is Davies Bertons, who was just absolutely on fire in the fourth quarter of this game.
00:09 And to be honest, has mostly been on fire whenever he's got playing time.
00:13 He just hasn't hasn't got that much time yet.
00:14 Chase, some of the shots Davies Bertons was hitting in this game, I mean, it is truly remarkable actually watching him as an NBA player because he is pretty unique.
00:26 You get this 6'10" guy who like sprints off these down screens like he is running full speed, like facing getting the pass facing kind of like the sideline.
00:39 And you're like, there's no way this guy can stop, square up and get a shot off on balance.
00:45 And he does it like every time.
00:47 It might not go in every single time in this game.
00:49 He was four of nine from three, but finished with 14 points.
00:52 Had a dunk as well.
00:54 Shout out Davies Bertons dunk.
00:55 There can't be many of those in his career.
00:59 But I've just never seen anyone at his size with his movement ability like off ball.
01:06 It's just truly remarkable.
01:07 The whole defense knows it's going to happen.
01:10 Like everyone knows the out of timeout play is being run for Davies Bertons, but it is super difficult to stop.
01:17 And it creates a bunch of space for other people as they just send defenses into like absolute chaos when he's running off these down screens.
01:27 The reason they came back in that game was because of Davies Bertons' shooting.
01:30 So I don't blame Clifford for riding the hot hand there.
01:34 It's so funny because you obviously would not classify Davies Bertons as someone that's athletic in really any way.
01:42 But he's clearly fast.
01:44 And that's always been something that's he's a fast dude like that dude can get up and down the floor.
01:49 He can get around screens.
01:50 He can run at angles and pivot and flip his hips and all of it's fast, no matter what.
01:56 Like a big thing that I always remembered of him when he because he was like a pretty notorious Hornets killer when he was with the Wizards.
02:03 I think he had like one of his career best games, I believe, was with the Wizards against the Hornets a couple of years ago.
02:10 So much of it like that's not in the half court is just him in transition leaking out off of a rebound and like literally like putting his head down and sprinting until he gets to half court.
02:20 And then just looking up and being like, give me the ball.
02:22 And then he just catches it and rockets it like a laser beam at the rim.
02:27 And that's like my favorite part about his shot too, is it's not like super high arcing or anything like.
02:32 It's flat, like it's quick.
02:34 The ball gets from his hands to the rim so quickly.
02:39 It's like it takes like half of a second.
02:41 He's literally like throwing it at the rim.
02:44 And I wonder how many shots Bertans could take for every shot that Miles Turner takes that hits the rim.
02:51 I feel like he could go two to one, like the speed of the release.
02:54 Miles Turner, the high arc with snow coming down in it.
02:58 Yeah, yeah, exactly.
02:59 And Davies Bertans could just like get a fire, fire, fire.
03:03 Why is he not?
03:04 He's not been in the three point contest yet.
03:05 I don't think.
03:07 That's a travesty.
03:08 Not more than like once or twice, if that even.
03:11 I definitely, I don't remember him making like any sort of run really.
03:14 But yeah, that would be a travesty because I'm going to pull up his career three point stats right now.
03:19 And the funniest one, I think of all of them is.
03:23 He has competed.
03:24 2020.
03:25 He finished third after totaling 26 points in the first round and 22 points in the second.
03:33 Oh, that was that was the pre-COVID All-Star break.
03:35 That makes sense that we forgot about that because a lot of stuff has happened.
03:40 Since then, absolutely, I want to see Davies Bertans in the three point contest next year, that would be.
03:47 Me too.
03:49 I mean, people I saw people saying last night, I think that that team option is getting picked up for next year.
03:56 And I think people are being serious.
03:58 Let's have the conversation, Chase.
04:01 What have you seen from that?
04:02 Have you seen enough? Let's put it this way from Davies Bertans to guarantee that 17 million dollar contract for next season.
04:09 Do you have him coming off the bench as this microwave score three point shooter?
04:15 So to me.
04:17 That's like an unequivocal yes, and not only because he's like a good shooter and like a like a specialist, basically is like you're not somebody that's going to be in your rotation, but when you need him, you can definitely play him.
04:29 But also because that 17 million dollar salary is extremely tradable, like and you have to pick that up to be able to use it at the deadline.
04:38 I believe it's only guaranteed for like five million.
04:40 So you're either waving him and paying him five million essentially in a buyout over the summer or you're keeping him and just paying him 17 million.
04:48 You can move that at the deadline.
04:51 There's another option.
04:52 You can trade him because he has that team option for next season.
04:56 So you can trade him at the draft or during the summer and then another team can choose to either terminate the contract for five million or keep him on the books for the next season.
05:06 So that he does have trade value in the summer because he's not expiring contract.
05:11 Exactly.
05:12 And then, I mean, for the same reason that the Hornets could use that 17 million dollar salary, maybe another team is like this isn't that much of a deal for us on our salary books.
05:20 Like we don't have that many other higher paid players.
05:22 We could use a guy that's going to come off the bench and could shoot eight threes in 10 minutes.
05:27 Like it's not the worst.
05:30 Like shooting is like the name of the game in the NBA right now.
05:32 And that's why players like him stick for so long and earn contracts that are worth 17 million dollars.
05:39 Like you'd never really imagine your team giving that to him.
05:43 But like now that he has it for the Hornets, I think it's actually like super beneficial because you can put him on the court and actually use him without having to rely on him in that sense as like a rotation player.
05:54 And then you can just trade him with one or two other guys.
05:57 And at that point, you've got like 25, 28 million dollars in salary.
06:01 You can go out and get somebody that makes real money if you wanted to.
06:04 So I'm like totally, totally in on keeping him at least through like the draft or something.
06:10 And if they needed to, like I don't think I would I would buy him out for the five million unless they had like a very clear path forward of like we're going to sign this player or this player and we're going to trade for this guy or whatever that may be.
06:23 If you don't if you don't have a set plan for him, like I don't I don't see why not just keep him around.
06:27 He seems like a like a good teammate as well.
06:29 Like he's always celebrating on the bench.
06:31 Very emotional when he makes threes as well.
06:34 Seems like somebody that would be easy to rally around and have that random 20 point game every like month or so that makes fans remember who he is through all the DNP CDs.
06:44 Yeah, but I'll admit, I think when the trade was made, I was thinking he's someone to move in the summer and you probably, you know, that's that's 17 million.
06:53 That is a big number, right?
06:54 You have to.
06:56 It depends how the rest of the offseason plays out.
06:58 But look, you've got so much optionality because of that contract and how it works.
07:03 And I agree, like having that 17 million dollar contract going into next season that you can use as a vehicle and the fact that he can like maybe play a role here and like maybe this team is looking at this in the offseason to go.
07:15 Actually, we have a role for Davies Bertons and he's not just when he came to Charley.
07:20 He was just a contract number with a kind of easily tradable contract.
07:25 And I do beginning to think we're seeing like a reminder of, oh, yeah, actually, Davies Bertons does have a role that he can play.
07:32 Now, obviously, the defense is a massive issue.
07:36 He runs around and seems to fall for quite a lot of defense.
07:40 That is that is he always knows where he needs to be, but he's always half a second late getting there and he can't stop himself and ends up seems to be on the floor a lot.
07:50 In fact, last night when they were up by one, he what he fouled quickly, 35 feet from the basket and then gave him free throws because Toronto in the bonus.
08:00 And it's like, what are you doing?
08:02 And that is why he's not landed anywhere.
08:05 Right, because of the foul rate, just the inability to like he is a complete mess defensively and he can't rebound the ball either.
08:15 So he needs to be hitting threes like this for him to be effective.
08:18 But for this Hornets team that has struggled offensively in recent weeks, he plays a role.
08:23 But on a more balanced team, I do think his value does begin to wane.
08:27 So I don't know what Davies Bertons is yet.
08:31 I'm enjoying this run while it lasts, but I am more open to keeping him for that 17 million.
08:37 But yeah, not not as a long term piece, but more as a like say a vehicle for trade.
08:42 Do you want to hear a hilarious stat that like perfectly embodies who Davies Bertons is as a player?
08:49 Let's do it. Actually, I'm gonna have you guess how many total two point attempts does Davies Bertons have on this entire season with OKC and the Hornets?
08:59 Oh, you see, if it was with the Hornets, I know the answer.
09:02 I think it's two. He had a dunk.
09:06 I don't think he's missed from two point range. He had a dunk in last night's game.
09:09 He had like a fadeaway floater a couple of nights ago.
09:12 Maybe I remember that one. I think the Sixers maybe.
09:16 Oh, it was the Sixers. For the season, I'm going to say five.
09:22 Ooh, you actually you missed it by one.
09:25 He has six two point attempts. That man is getting to the rim, James.
09:29 Yes, driving. He's putting the ball on the deck.
09:32 Six two point attempts in 209 minutes this year.
09:35 He has taken 72 threes and is shooting a forty four point four percent on them.
09:41 That is a shooter. There's nothing that man does not want to do.
09:45 Anything else? He doesn't want to pass. He doesn't want to play defense.
09:49 He's on a dribble. Just catch the ball, throw it at the rim.
09:52 It's going to go in quite literally almost half the time.
09:55 It's it's genuinely like kind of insane, like how efficient he is,
09:59 like even through not playing all that much.
10:02 He was the same in OKC. He was like forty two percent there.
10:05 He took two two two point attempts with them, has four with the Hornets.
10:09 So you remembered his two makes because it's the dunk and that like fadeaway,
10:13 like turnaround type thing that he did.
10:16 He might. I don't even remember the two misses.
10:18 So he's two for four with Charlotte over two with OKC.
10:21 I don't remember the two misses either.
10:23 Yeah, I like. I love my numbers here.
10:26 Charlotte are plus nine point two points when he is on the floor in offense
10:31 and six points better on defense. Chase lockdown.
10:35 That was the Johns. I think he's benefited from sharing quite a lot of minutes with Grant Williams,
10:42 who is, you know, absolutely the on off numbers.
10:44 Love Grant Williams. Love, love, love, love.
10:48 But but yeah, he's like the team has actually been able to defend at an OK level while he's been on the court.
10:52 So as much as the eye test does, maybe seem to have fooled me a little bit.
