Newcomers always ask "Why are there seagulls in Canberra when there's no sea?" An ornithologist explains.

00:07 With Lake George nearby, there's most probably always been gulls in the district,
00:11 but the urban lakes undoubtedly attract them.
00:15 And then facilities such as the Canberra Yacht Club and other facilities,
00:20 ooting out facilities near the water also attract them.
00:27 And there's no doubt also that they do very well where garbage is not controlled properly,
00:35 so municipal tips they enjoy visiting.
00:41 So the combination of the urban lakes, people feeding them, outside eating,
00:48 and municipal tips all combine to create haven really for the silver gulls.
