Why Do Wombats And Other 124 Species Glow

Wombats and over 124 other species actually glow! It's like Mother Nature's own neon party. Some critters, including wombats, have this cool biofluorescence thing going on. Scientists stumbled upon it, and now we're all wondering why these furry fellas light up like glow sticks. Some theories say it could be for communication in the dark or maybe just to impress their mates.

00:00 Fun fact!
00:03 Wombats glow under UV light.
00:05 And they aren't alone.
00:06 At least 125 species of mammals show some form of fluorescence.
00:11 If you've ever worn a white shirt to a nightclub, you know exactly what fluorescence is about.
00:16 The energy from UV light, which humans can't see, gets absorbed by certain chemicals, and
00:21 magic happens.
00:23 In the case of animals, those chemicals must be the proteins or pigments in their scales,
00:27 skin, or fur.
00:29 People never paid much attention to this animal superpower until recently.
00:33 Then, in 2019, some scientists noticed that flying squirrels glow pink under UV light.
00:40 Later, they found out that platypuses turn green, and so does the inside of red fox's
00:45 ears.
00:46 Zebra's white stripes, polar bears, and leopard's yellow fur all go blue.
00:53 And the fur on the wings of the orange nose-leaf bat becomes exotic pink.
00:58 me jealous!
