00:09 So yeah, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Chandaniya Shimolatewa Women's Prison
00:16 by the principal secretaries to break down police violence was such a time.
00:21 Can we take a photo?
00:22 Yes, yes.
00:23 [INAUDIBLE]
00:26 [APPLAUSE]
00:32 Thank you.
00:33 [APPLAUSE]
00:35 Thank you.
00:35 And the moment is recorded.
00:37 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:50 We are here in Mombasa Coast Region at Shimolatewa Women's
00:55 Main Prison, where we have come to do the groundbreaking for construction
01:00 by Chandaniya Foundation of a workshop that will combine tailoring and bakery
01:06 as well as an IT hub.
01:08 We are very happy to be accompanied by the representatives from Chandaniya
01:14 Foundation, Mr. Karohia, as well as the other members of the State Department.
01:21 And we are hoping that this workshop will go a long way in training our inmates
01:27 in skills of bakery as well as skills of tailoring and an IT hub, which is a new
01:34 frontier we are exploring.
01:36 I am happy to tell you that--
01:38 to report that we are also collaborating with Her Excellency Mama Rachel Ruto
01:42 with her Karakana project, which involves crochet.
01:47 And crochet is a whole new ground that we are taking this year to train our
01:53 inmates.
01:54 And it has been very, very successful in the past in Langata Women's Prison,
01:59 where we also have another of the Chandaniya Foundation workshop, which is a
02:03 bakery and a clothing section, and where our inmates, the female inmates, have
02:10 gained a lot of skills.
02:11 And they have earned a lot of money.
02:13 In fact, in Langata, some of them have earned upwards of 48,000 in a very short
02:18 while.
02:19 And therefore, we see this as a way of increasing the scope of vocational
02:24 programs that we are giving to these women, because women are a core cog in the
02:30 stability of the society.
02:32 And we take the view that it is important that we keep them-- we equip them with
02:37 all the necessary skills.
02:39 So I really congratulate Chandaniya Foundation, as well as Mama Rachel Ruto,
02:46 for the initiative they are taking.
02:49 Chandaniya Foundation are also doing another project in Meru.
02:53 And we hope that next month, we shall be able to commission it.
02:57 It is also a workshop that comprises a bakery, as well as a clothing section.
03:03 And we hope to keep expanding that to include the Karakana project and an IT
03:08 hub so that we equip these women so that these women can become serious
03:12 entrepreneurs, which is aligned to His Excellency, the President's, pillar of
03:20 SMEs, MSMEs, and entrepreneurship.
03:24 So that the inmates here, when they leave, they really play a major and serious
03:31 role in economic progress.
03:33 I'm also happy to report that Chandaniya Foundation have also agreed to do
03:38 another project in Kisumu and in Nyery women prisons.
