The Ford Ranger played a major role in Ford Philippines’ sales success in 2023, accounting for 13,234 units out of the total tally of 31,320 vehicles sold. And the latest Ford Ranger Raptor, which was launched in the local market in May last year, accounted for quite a few of those Ranger sales.

This beefed-up truck obviously has a big following among local pickup fans, but in its current iteration, just how good is it in off-road conditions? For this edition of Drives, we took it to Tanay and put it through five off-roading challenges. Watch our full 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor review by clicking play on the video above.

00:00 Good morning, this is B-Boy Vargas for Top Gear Philippines, and welcome to the LA 4x4
00:06 Consulting Proving Grounds, where today we have a Ford Ranger Raptor.
00:28 So here we go, trying to get the off-road impressions on the car.
00:33 Let's start with a slippery, rutted descent to the river.
00:37 We've got four-wheel drive low and gauged.
00:40 As you can see, the car is intervening, so it seems to know better than the driver.
00:50 Come down here, keep it straight, and then just let go of the gas, and the car should
00:57 go.
00:59 No brakes, no gas, the car brings us down nice and safe.
01:05 So score one for the Ranger Raptor.
01:11 Let's switch to a more normal setting.
01:16 I'm going down to four-wheel drive automatic.
01:21 Shift in progress.
01:22 Okay, so we're on advanced track, we're shifting to slippery mode, all-wheel drive, and let's
01:32 have a blast.
01:33 There, it behaved.
01:34 Go to the rock section.
01:35 Of course, we will now go to the rock setting.
01:48 Rock crawl.
01:54 The rock crawl, the throttle response and the engine braking and the brakes practically
02:02 control the car.
02:03 You just control the pace.
02:06 So I'm barely on the throttle.
02:09 We're not yet on the really rutty stuff, but we're getting there.
02:16 This is where you learn to appreciate the coil spring suspension of the car.
02:21 It's nice and soft, unlike those leaf spring vehicles that will rock your head off.
02:26 As you can see, we're doing fine.
02:31 Trolling along.
02:34 These are pretty huge rocks, by the way.
02:37 So we have to pick our line more carefully.
02:44 We'd be able to cross the river here, but recent rains the past two weeks just won't
02:51 let us.
02:52 So again, I'm barely on the accelerator.
02:57 I'm actually playing at around 1,800 rpm in rock crawl mode so that we can maneuver over
03:09 the rocks.
03:10 Now we're stuck.
03:11 So back up a little.
03:13 The idea is to maintain a little more momentum.
03:15 I guess we don't have enough traction because we didn't air the tires down enough.
03:21 But we're getting through.
03:24 And we're through the rock field.
03:32 No hot-dogging.
03:33 Okay, so let's see how rock crawl works on a slippery slope like this.
03:40 Not level at all.
03:43 So we'll try to take it as slow as possible.
03:46 Yes, it's getting it, pulling us through.
03:50 Not the way I would want it, but...
03:57 Yep, pulling us through.
04:05 It's not about just stomping on that accelerator.
04:11 It's about getting traction.
04:13 No sweat.
04:16 And we barely hit 3,000 rpm.
04:25 Splash it.
04:26 Can't get more authentic than this.
04:32 So we did the off-roading stuff.
04:35 Now let's do what the Raptor suspension was meant to do, go fire-roading.
04:42 And here we go.
04:47 Pretty well-built.
04:48 Feels solid.
04:49 You just gotta love the way that Fox suspension soaks up the bad road.
05:08 A big splash.
05:20 Kinda like the feel of how it seemed to be bolted together properly.
05:28 Feels very solid.
05:34 Maybe I stopped on a dime.
05:39 I just think that it could use a little more lower gearing on the final drive for a little
05:48 more control on the off-road stuff.
05:49 But I would understand where it would be coming from because this is the kind of stuff this
05:55 car was made to do.
06:00 So what do I think of the new Ford Ranger Raptor?
06:03 It still has all the fun and adventure the first generation has to offer.
06:09 The only difference is, back then on the first generation, it had a flashbang.
06:15 It was a new setup in the market and it really stole everybody's hearts.
06:21 With the second generation, it's still the same car.
06:24 Definitely looks tougher, has more electronic toys, but it lost that flashbang of something
06:31 new introduced into the market.
06:34 So I'm giving it 7.5.
