Honda Introduces the Civic RS Prototype in Tokyo, Showcasing Enhanced Aesthetics and Manual Transmission
Debuting at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Honda presents the 2024 Civic RS Prototype, offering a glimpse into a sporty hatchback variant equipped with a coveted manual gearbox. Set to hit the Japanese market in the fall of 2024, the Civic RS Prototype is strategically positioned between the standard versions and the high-performance Civic Type R.
Cloaked in a striking full-black livery, the Civic RS Prototype boasts an understated yet powerful aesthetic. The standout feature is the redesigned front bumper, characterized by sharper surfacing and sleeker side intakes. The black exterior is accentuated by red RS emblems on both ends, creating a subtle yet distinctive appearance. While the bodywork and alloy wheels maintain continuity with the standard Civic Hatchback, the visual enhancements give the new trim a distinct softcore Type R vibe.
In the United States, the Honda Civic already offers a six-speed manual gearbox, but Japanese buyers have been limited to the CVT automatic. However, this will change with the upcoming launch of the manual-equipped Civic RS in Japan in the fall of 2024.
Although Honda has not divulged details about the powertrain, expectations point toward the utilization of the non-electrified turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine. Notably, Honda has promised "further refinements to the joy of driving," suggesting an enhanced chassis setup to complement the sportier aesthetics.
Speculations suggest that the JDM-spec Civic RS may align with the specifications of the US-spec Civic Si. The latter features a limited-slip differential, rev-matching technology, stiffer springs, revised dampers, thicker stabilizer bars, larger brakes, and a robust 200 hp from the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine. The 2024 Civic RS Prototype emerges as an exciting addition, bridging the gap between standard offerings and the high-performance Type R in the Honda Civic lineup.
