Available Now: 2023 Mercedes-AMG ONE Hits the Market, Amidst Delays in Deliveries
Purchased in 2020, faced delays in 2021, and again in 2021, the eagerly awaited 2023 Mercedes-AMG ONE is now on sale, despite many customers still awaiting their deliveries. Although officially listed for sale since the end of the previous year, we refrained from disrupting the chronological flow of events. Rest assured, the hypercar remains available for purchase this year.
Introduced as the Project ONE in 2017, this aerodynamically designed masterpiece by Mercedes took the automotive world by storm. Featuring active aerodynamics and Formula 1-inspired technology, the model quickly sold out before the production version was even revealed.
In a surprising turn of events, Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius admitted regret over the development process in the spring of 2023, citing the challenges of incorporating a Formula 1 engine into a street-legal vehicle. Despite the setbacks, the long-anticipated model finally began deliveries.
The Mercedes-AMG ONE boasts a sophisticated system derived from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas racing cars, particularly the F1 W06 racing car from the 2015 season, which powered Lewis Hamilton to his third Drivers’ Championship. However, the transition from Formula 1 to a street-legal vehicle proved to be a formidable task for the engineering team.
The 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged engine, developed at the Formula 1 team's factory in Brackley, operates alongside four electric motors, generating over 1,000 horsepower. Challenges during development included addressing excessive engine noise and adapting the KERS energy recovery system for street use.
Initially delayed to the fall of 2021, the production faced subsequent delays, with the first delivery occurring in January 2023, among the 275 units scheduled for production. Despite the challenges, the delivered model impresses with 1,049 horsepower, but torque remains unmeasured due to the intricacies of the drivetrain.
Powered by a seven-speed, dual-clutch automated manual transmission, the Mercedes-AMG ONE accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 2.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 352 kph. Riding on specially designed wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires, it offers exceptional performance.
Notably, customers who reserved the hypercar were initially restricted from selling it for an undisclosed period post-delivery. However, one owner is already selling their example. Though pricing details are undisclosed, the initial price tag was 2.75 million euros, reflecting its exclusive status.
Importantly, the Mercedes-AMG ONE is not street-legal in the US, as modifications for compliance would compromise its performance. Customers can import it under the 'show and display' law, limited to 2,500 miles per year.
