Iowa Basketball player interview
Transcript
00:00 >> Let's talk about the 15 assists.
00:02 What's that mean to be that, to have that number?
00:06 >> It mean a lot.
00:06 I mean, that's probably my first time ever having 15 assists.
00:10 So, feel good.
00:11 They in the locker room call me John Stockton, so.
00:13 >> [LAUGH] >> I take it, but it felt good though.
00:18 >> Just kind of a look you were getting from the brass on defense.
00:20 I mean, just what was working for you on the floor today?
00:22 >> Yeah, they play a similar kind of defense to, I mean not Rutgers.
00:27 I was stated to be on one side.
00:32 So I was just pushing a baseline and my people was cutting,
00:35 getting open to three.
00:36 And so that's just why I did hit people in the right spot, hit over at the rim.
00:40 Hit him on a row, hit Ben, hit all my shooters.
00:43 So that's what the plan was.
00:45 >> You've had at least seven assists in four of the last six games,
00:49 double figures and seven consecutive.
00:51 Just why do you think you've been able to be consistent?
00:55 >> Passing wise, I try to get a double, double all the time.
00:58 As much as I can, when people hit shots,
01:01 I most definitely try to get it like tonight.
01:03 But just finding an open man.
01:06 Now, a lot of teams put me high on the scouting report so
01:13 they might keep me from doing what I wanna do or try to trap me on ball screens.
01:16 It's different kind of stuff.
01:18 So I just try to find open people and get my teammates involved.
01:21 So that's the goal.
01:23 >> Did you realize that feel like you were having a 15 assist game or?
01:28 >> Yeah, I know the first time I kept hearing assist by Perkins,
01:30 assist by Perkins.
01:31 So at halftime, I just kept looking.
01:34 I started adding up all the passes and shots that they was hitting.
01:37 I was like, seven at halftime, okay.
01:40 Then when I got to 14, cuz Aaron was on the other bench, Ulysse.
01:44 And I was looking, I was like, that's 14, that's 14.
01:47 So I kept count.
01:48 [LAUGH]
01:50 >> You probably come in low, there's gonna be a small crowd tonight.
01:52 You probably have to bring your own energy and get things going.
01:55 How did you assess your guys' ability to do that?
01:57 >> Good, we're used to a bigger crowd, but
01:59 the crowd we had tonight was pretty engaged.
02:01 I give all the credit to our coaches and the guys on the bench as well.
02:06 They brought the energy that we needed.
02:07 Usually it's loud in car where we can feed off that energy.
02:11 But tonight, I give all credit to our players on the bench and
02:14 our coaches as well.
02:15 >> What's it like to hear about what Owen did today?
02:17 >> He's getting better every game.
02:20 He's getting rebounds, stopping their best player defensively,
02:25 killing them offensively.
02:26 He's doing what he do best.
02:28 We all knew what he was gonna do when he came here, so he's just showing that.
02:32 >> Why'd he miss that dunk?
02:34 But I mean, other than that, I don't know.
02:36 Other than that, I mean, before that, he was 11 to 12 in the field.
02:39 I mean, what's that say about the way he is playing right now?
02:43 >> He's playing at a high level.
02:44 After he missed that dunk, I told him, I was like, you're trash for that.
02:46 Come on. >> [LAUGH]
02:47 >> Cuz if I would have missed the dunk,
02:48 he would have had so much to say to me.
02:49 So he was just talking back and forth.
02:51 But he's just a great player.
02:52 A young player, but as years go on, he's gonna be a great player, seriously.
02:59 >> What do you think, I guess, what's just clicking for you guys right now as a team?
03:02 >> You know our, well, y'all might know our saying, but
03:05 our saying is once the Hawks win one, the Hawks get hot.
03:07 So we're gonna keep getting these victories.
03:10 We're gonna build off the energy we had tonight and
03:12 then let that lead into the next game.
03:13 And when we get that dub, just keep letting it go and go.
03:15 >> Has there been something that keeps a turn a little bit or
03:19 is it just a matter of playing together more, just meshing?
03:23 >> I'd say playing together, but also how we come out the game with energy.
03:26 Like tonight, we came out with a lot of energy, pushed the score.
03:30 I don't remember the score at first, but before the media time, I was up a lot.
03:34 And also at Rutgers, we pushed it up a lot too, and they couldn't hang.
03:36 And we ended up pushing the lead up.
03:38 And then as well today, they made a run, but we got that together.
03:42 I've said a few words about our defense and
03:44 then we pushed it all the way up to where we need to be.
03:48 >> All right, thanks, Tony.
03:51 >> Thanks, Tony.
