Tom Brands Interview

00:00 you. Who are you? Tell Eli said, Hello, and we miss him. I go right questions for coach.
00:15 Some of the lineup questions have been answered. Obviously for the postseason, what can lead
00:27 to some of the decisions like 33? It's a way it worked out. I understand that, you know,
00:37 people want a glimpse on the inside. That's the way it worked out. We got a lot of good
00:41 people and we're deep in some weights and that's a good thing for us. What? It's a way
00:53 they worked out, you know, it's just certain things happen and it's the way it worked out.
01:00 We're in the postseason now. There's 10 weights and one guy at each weight. We're fired up
01:05 about our team. How much do you think Brody's experience over the years could help him here
01:15 in this final opportunity? I'm not sure that experience not to, you know, throw your question
01:25 in the trash can. I'm not sure experience has anything to do with any kind of entitlement
01:31 or even a little guarantee to have success because you're experienced or because you're
01:37 a veteran. I think that there's a lot to be said for getting up. There's a lot to be said
01:43 that peaking is a mindset. There's a lot to be said that this is the most important time
01:48 of the year. This is the second most important event and it's the most important event up
01:52 to this point in time. It is a qualifier. You got to get through this to get to the
01:57 next one. Everything that you do well today helps you for tomorrow. And if you stumble
02:05 today you got to get up and go tomorrow also. So, really you're writing your own ticket.
02:14 And regardless if you have experience, more experience, we've had some guys that have
02:19 seventh years now. We have guys that have six years now. There's no guarantee. So, just
02:28 go out and be ready to go every time out. Control the things that you can control. Have
02:32 a blast. Score points. And you know what? Put on a display of awesomeness for your fans
02:40 and your family. Why did you decide to keep Arnold and Keter's red shirt? I mean, there's
02:51 a lot of things that go into those decisions. They're certainly capable. We have other guys
02:58 that are capable there as well. And when you look at, I mean, there's different reasons
03:03 for both of them. When you look at each individual reason, the bottom line is at the end of this
03:11 process, this program and this guy really like the idea of both those guys having four
03:20 years at the end of this year. When you're making the decision about them, is there any
03:27 discussion with football of how it could be mutually beneficial or is it just you reaching
03:31 out? I think, no, there's not like how it could be mutually beneficial. I think they
03:37 run their organization. We run ours knowing that we have a very capable and unique athlete
03:45 there, student athlete there. And I think both programs are really excited about him
03:50 and his future. And when the time to talk is upon us, we'll talk. My favorite people
03:58 on campus are Kirk Ferentz and his staff for a lot of reasons. And this is just something
04:05 that just a little bit makes us a little bit tighter. There's a little bit more in common.
04:11 So we'll cross that bridge communication wise when we get there. But to answer your question,
04:18 this wasn't like a mutual decision like so he can springboard better as a second year
04:24 going into the spring football season, et cetera. This was based on, like I said, I
04:33 mean, there's a lot of reasons why you would do it. There's a lot of reasons why you wouldn't
04:39 do it. And I'll tell you what, Bradley Hill, he ain't chopped liver. He's a capable,
04:47 talented, explosive heavyweight that we love.
04:51 I was going to ask you about him. What is it that really he is, because you've talked
04:57 about him a lot and how much he's improved this year. What have you seen out of him,
05:02 especially in the last few years?
05:04 Seriousness. I tell him that he probably could do better if he took himself a little more
05:10 serious, but that's kind of an inside joke now between us. He likes to, he's a fun guy.
05:16 I mean, he's a fun, popular guy in that locker room, but he's also serious about his development.
05:22 He's been serious about his development. The conversations that we have with him, you don't
05:28 have to worry about if you got to have follow-up conversation because you may have bruised
05:35 his ego or damaged his feelings. He is very accountable, very, he owns it, very thick
05:43 skinned in the right way. And he's honest. He's honest with himself and he's honest with
05:50 us when the conversations are direct and go that direction. We love him. We love him.
05:56 Is there any area that Brody's made improvements on?
06:04 I think that the comfort level of relationship between coach and athlete, between Brody Teske
06:16 and Tom Brand specifically, Brody Teske and the program, I think that that is something
06:23 that has to be talked about. And I think that's happened. I would say that Brody Teske has
06:33 an idea of how he wants his wrestling to look. And I think that idea matches up with our
06:39 philosophy in the program. And we know that he can do it. He's done it at the highest
06:47 level and we're looking for his best performance and he's looking for his best performance
06:54 and it's time to go. And that's about as much overlap and, you know, you shut the camera
07:03 off so I won't finish my thoughts there. I mean, you got to finish them. You got to finish
07:08 them. You can't get, you know, you got to put it all in context. You know what I'm saying?
07:13 I'm giving you a pro tip on how to. Oh, you get Nelly's feed? All right. I would say that
07:20 Brody Teske and Iowa Wrestling know what we want both of our wrestling to look like. And
07:30 we've seen it at a high level from him. And now we're at the time of year where we need
07:36 it. He needs it. Time to go. Have a blast. Score points. Make your opponents pay, etc.,
07:44 etc., etc.
07:45 Was his preceding a little funny?
07:48 Yeah, I mean, there's just funny, there's funny things that go on. And he wrestled at
07:53 Oklahoma State and you got to make sure the situation that we were in, the timing was
07:58 right. And, you know, we're going to do what's best for our athletes first. And in my assessment
08:07 and the program's assessment, it was right to get the timing right for the wrestle-off
08:12 for a lot of reasons. And I'm not going to get into it too much. I've already said probably
08:17 more than I want to say about it. But it's a, you know, a policy, I guess you could say
08:25 with the Big Ten, that when you submit your lineup and you get to a certain point and
08:32 you do change, there has to be a certain number of points. It's got to be close within two
08:38 or three points. I'm not sure exactly what it is. On whether or not you can open it up
08:44 for a coach's vote. And the policy says that because of, you know, how this went down,
08:52 we are not able to open it up for another vote. So he goes with the 14 seed and away
09:00 we go.
09:01 All right. Thanks, Tom.
09:02 Hey, thanks.
09:03 Thanks, Tom.
09:04 Brody Teske?
09:05 Yeah.
09:06 Yeah.
09:07 Yeah.
