00:00 The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Mr. President, has led to a large-scale loss
00:06 of civilian lives, especially women and children, and has resulted in an alarming humanitarian
00:12 crisis.
00:13 This is clearly unacceptable, and we have strongly condemned the death of civilians.
00:19 India has a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.
00:23 Our thoughts are with those who have been taken as hostage, and we demand their immediate
00:29 and unconditional release.
00:31 A peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward.
00:39 Thank you, Mr. President, for convening this plenary meeting of the General Assembly today.
00:44 We take note of the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2720 on 22 December 2023, aimed
00:52 towards scaling up humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, and in this regard
00:58 commend the able leadership of the United Arab Emirates in piloting this resolution
01:04 within the Security Council.
01:07 The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Mr. President, has led to a large-scale loss
01:13 of civilian lives, especially women and children, and has resulted in an alarming humanitarian
01:19 crisis.
01:21 This is clearly unacceptable, and we have strongly condemned the death of civilians.
01:27 At the same time, Mr. President, we are aware that the immediate trigger were the terror
01:32 attacks in Israel on 7 October, which were shocking and deserve our unequivocal condemnation.
01:40 India has a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.
01:44 There can be no justification for terrorism and hostage-taking.
01:49 Our thoughts are with those who have been taken as hostage, and we demand their immediate
01:54 and unconditional release.
01:57 I will also state, Mr. President, that the leadership of India is in constant touch with
02:03 the leaders of the region, including those of Israel and Palestine.
02:07 We have also voiced our views in multilateral fora such as the G20, the BRICS, and at the
02:14 voice of the Global South Summit in November 2023, and have reiterated our long-standing
02:20 and principled position on the issue.
02:23 We have also called for continued humanitarian aid for the affected population, and in this
02:29 regard, we hope that Security Council Resolution 2720 would aid in enhancing humanitarian assistance.
02:39 I will also remind this Assembly that India has so far provided 70 tonnes of humanitarian
02:45 aid, including 16.5 tonnes of medicine and medical supplies, in two tranches to the people
02:52 of Palestine.
02:53 We have also provided US dollars 5 million, including the US dollar 2.5 million we provided
03:00 in end December 2023 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees
03:07 in the Near East, which will go to support the Agency's core programs and services, including
03:14 education, health care, relief and social services provided to Palestinian refugees.
03:22 The message that India has conveyed since the start of this conflict is clear and consistent.
03:28 It is important to prevent escalation, to ensure continued delivery of humanitarian
03:34 aid, and to work towards an early restoration of peace and stability.
03:39 A peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward.
03:47 I will conclude, Mr President, by reaffirming India's firm commitment to achieving a just,
03:54 peaceful and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine issue.
03:57 We firmly believe that only a two-state solution, achieved through direct and meaningful negotiations
04:05 between both sides on final status issues, will deliver an enduring peace that the people
04:11 of Israel and Palestine desire and deserve.
04:15 For this, we urge the parties to de-escalate, eschew violence and work towards creating
04:22 conditions for an early resumption of direct peace negotiations.
