00:00 There's people you date and there's people you marry, and this is a guitar I married.
00:05 [MUSIC]
00:07 Hey, this is Bartise Strange with guitar.com.
00:09 We're at Guitar Guitar in Camden, and we're gonna do some guitar shopping.
00:12 [MUSIC]
00:17 This is a Les Paul Studio.
00:20 The first guitar my parents ever got me was a guitar that was a lot like this.
00:25 It was jet black, four knobs, two humbuckers.
00:29 I remember playing this in my mirror all the time, and
00:35 the first song I think I learned on it was All Along the Watchtower.
00:41 And I would put on a little bandana and play it, and I thought I was Jimi Hendrix.
00:47 It was a silly time in my life.
00:49 I was like 15, 14.
00:52 And up until that point, I'd only had beaters,
00:55 guitars that my friends didn't want or I would borrow.
01:00 So I was pretty pumped when I got this guitar.
01:02 It was my first one.
01:02 [MUSIC]
01:09 This is one of my favorite guitars, period, ever, period, period, period, period.
01:14 This is a 335 Gibson.
01:16 I have a bunch of these.
01:17 I have one that looks exactly like this, a Murphy Lab custom shop.
01:21 335 I bought at Chicago Music Exchange.
01:24 The most killing guitar, and I feel like there's so much variation in how
01:30 this guitar can sound, but you find a good one.
01:33 I mean, you're not gonna find very many better sounding guitars.
01:37 I also think that just as a strummer, if you're just chilling at your house,
01:41 it's such a fun guitar to play.
01:44 Just sitting down watching TV, that's how I write most of my songs.
01:46 I'll be watching Escape to the Country and just playing 335 or
01:53 playing a Jazzmaster and just kinda like it's low volume, but
01:56 I can kinda feel it still resonate.
01:57 I love these guitars.
02:00 So shout out to Gibson.
02:02 Great guitar, 335.
02:04 Don't have one, you should buy one, I promise.
02:06 [MUSIC]
02:11 All right, so there's people you date and there's people you marry.
02:17 And this is a guitar I married.
02:20 I play Jazzmasters pretty much religiously,
02:24 if I'm not like 75% of the time I'm playing a Jazzmaster.
02:28 I don't play too many other fenders.
02:33 I play Tele's and I play these.
02:35 And it's something about how grab and go it is.
02:38 And I felt like after I figured out how to play this,
02:41 it became my most fun thing to play.
02:44 And I think what drew me to it was I had a lot of friends who were really fast
02:48 on guitar, like Strat players, Tele players, Chicken Pickers,
02:52 Shredders, Prog people, but I never wanted to do any of that.
02:56 And then I saw Wilco play and I was like, good Lord,
03:01 I've never heard a guitar player sound that cool.
03:04 And saw Sonic Youth play on YouTube videos and I was like, what is that?
03:10 And I was just into the body shape, I'm kind of a bigger guy, so
03:13 the way it sat felt good and I liked that it was wide.
03:17 There were so many things I loved about the guitar and I remember getting my first
03:21 one and pretty much knowing immediately that I'd be playing them for
03:24 the rest of my life.
03:26 So I've got a bunch of these, I've got a 59, I've got a couple Custom Shop ones,
03:30 I've got an AVR-I1, Slick Guitar Man, I don't know.
03:34 If you are into just being kind of messy and getting weird,
03:39 I would highly recommend this guitar.
03:40 It's right in between a Strat and a Tele tonally, but
03:43 it does something else, which I think is fire.
03:47 And a lot of people don't use this, the rhythm circuit is pretty useful.
03:50 Especially if you're playing a Vox like I do, I crank the treble on the Vox and
03:55 make it sound good on the rhythm.
03:57 And then when I wanna get crazy for lead tone, I just cut the rhythm and
04:00 just get all the tone and all the high end back.
04:02 So get a Jazzmaster.
04:04 [MUSIC]
04:09 The Telecaster is like the hammer or the screwdriver of guitar playing.
04:15 It's like you pick it up and it just plays.
04:19 Like it sounds great no matter what.
04:21 It can fall out of a truck, it will still work.
04:24 You can take it apart and put it in a plane and
04:25 put it back together when you land, it's gonna still be set up.
04:28 It's like the simplest, most perfect, I think,
04:31 functioning musical instrument in guitar world.
04:35 This is a little more complicated, obviously, cuz it's got a Bigsby on it.
04:38 But I think this is one of the most beautiful guitars in the world.
04:41 And if I had someone else's credit card, I would buy this.
04:45 For sure.
04:47 So come to the show tonight and buy a bunch of merch.
04:49 [LAUGH] So I can buy this.
04:52 [MUSIC]
04:57 Okay, so this is like a weirdo.
05:00 And I've seen people take their Jazzmasters or
05:02 their Tele's and put gold foils in them.
05:05 But I didn't know Fender was doing this until very recently.
05:08 It's kind of cool and I haven't heard it yet, but I really wanna try it.
05:11 So if there was a guitar here that I was just curious about and
05:16 kinda wanted to learn more about, it'd be this one.
05:17 Cuz it's got some Jaguar functionality, three pickups, Jazzmaster body.
05:24 It's got the mid-late 60s Jazzmaster binding, matching headstock,
05:30 and then a Bigsby on it.
05:31 I mean, it's a mashup of all these guitars I kinda like.
05:36 So I'd be curious to try it, really cool guitar.
