00:02 - Dakar 1985, my first Dakar.
00:07 Normally I did motocross.
00:12 As soon as I had some good results at the Italian GP
00:17 in the Luxembourg Grand Prix, where I came second,
00:20 we asked Yamaha if it was possible to have a factory bike
00:24 to do motocross.
00:29 So the answer was that I was good on the hard terrain,
00:32 but when there were sand races, I had problems qualifying.
00:36 So Yamaha Italy told me,
00:40 why don't you go and train during the winter
00:43 and do the Dakar?
00:44 There's a race that starts in Paris
00:46 and goes through the deserts to Dakar.
00:48 There are also French motocross riders
00:51 who do this as training.
00:53 It's good for you too.

01:00 But it's crazy to say I was in the lead of the Dakar
01:05 during a week without any assistance
01:07 because we had lost all the assistances.
01:09 I finished third at that rally because of a liaison problem
01:16 in the battle with Gaston Raillet and Jean-Claude Olivier.
01:19 (dramatic music)
01:22 (engines roaring)
01:25 Raillet first, Jean-Claude Olivier second,
01:33 and me third at the finish.
01:35 When I got home, I said to myself,
01:39 I don't like this race.
01:40 What a nightmare.
01:42 It's difficult with the navigation,
01:44 the assistance, and the race too.
01:46 There weren't really any clear rules.
01:51 (dramatic music)
01:54 When I got back to Italy, it was a triumph.
01:57 Everyone was saying great things.
02:01 Everyone recognized me for what I'd done on the Dakar.
02:03 And then when I went back to talk to Yamaha
02:10 about the factory bike,
02:11 they gave me the factory bike to do the Dakar
02:15 and told me, "You'll do motocross as training."
02:18 And that's when the story began.
02:20 And so to say that I left to train on the sand that day,
02:24 and I'm still training on the sand.
