00:00 Don't go away.
00:16 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:20 up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:23 I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Friday the 5th of January.
00:29 A giant killing to survive.
00:31 Kent's remaining FA Cup sides enter round three as huge underdogs.
00:36 Up and running.
00:37 Chatham couch to 5k scheme returns to get people moving.
00:41 And bullseye.
00:42 Kent expects a surge in darts players following world championship craze.
00:47 But first a round up of the headlines for me.
00:51 And Gillingham's head coach Stephen Clements says that he will have the final say on transfer
00:55 signings in the current window.
00:58 The new boss, who is now into his third month in charge at Priestfield, says the team have
01:02 been working hard to try and bring in additional quality, which he hopes will improve the club's
01:08 chances of promotion this season.
01:10 It comes after speculation that the club had shown interest in Peterborough United striker
01:14 Johnson Clark Harris, which Clements has refused to comment on.
01:17 Here's him speaking to the press this week.
01:20 It's a team effort.
01:21 Obviously we all speak all the time.
01:24 We're speaking quite a lot at the moment.
01:25 We've been speaking a lot over the last, well, since I've come to the club really.
01:30 As I've always said, January's never an easy window to deal in.
01:33 Not as easy as the summer.
01:35 But no, the recruitment department bring me players all the time.
01:39 We look over them together.
01:40 I obviously don't get to watch them live, but we've obviously got Kenny, Hess and Salim
01:44 that are out there all the time watching players.
01:47 And then we come to a decision and there's differing opinions at times, but what I will
01:51 say is obviously anyone that does come in, it has to be with my say so.
01:55 And I've been told that since I've come to the club.
02:00 And that's how we're working.
02:01 And of course we'll hear more from Stephen Clements later in the programme.
02:05 But next, Favisham Town has sacked their manager, Sammy Moore.
02:09 The Lilywhites are currently top of the Southern County's East League Premier Division, but
02:13 have taken just two points from their last few matches.
02:16 The club's chairman, Gary Smart, has thanked Moore's involvement at the club, but says
02:20 that with the resources at the disposal for the management team, the club's clear objectives
02:24 have not been achieved.
02:26 Favisham made a number of big signings in late 2022, including former Gillingham striker
02:31 Adebayo Akinfenwa in what was a failed bid to avoid relegation.
02:35 Whilst a replacement is yet to be announced, midfielder Matt Newman will take charge in
02:40 the interim.
02:42 Now a teenager from Dartford is preparing to compete at one of the most prestigious
02:46 international junior squash competitions in the world, the British Junior Open.
02:51 Dylan Roberts will be competing in the under-17s boys category.
02:55 He was most previously crowned under-13s English junior champion in 2020, and will be hoping
03:00 to make a home advantage count in the upcoming tournament, which takes place in Birmingham
03:04 this weekend.
03:07 Now take a look at this video of an Olympic athlete in Dartford chasing away a robber.
03:14 Andrew Callard can be seen here chasing off a man who had been spotted hiding inside a
03:19 container housing tools.
03:21 The Europa Gym in Temple Hill is currently undergoing a makeover, which the former Olympian
03:25 had been overseeing.
03:27 He says that he was working inside the building when the container had been left unlocked
03:31 and came outside at just the right time.
03:33 The 55-year-old competed in the weightlifting at the 1992 Barcelona games, and says the
03:38 man came back after initially being chased away, but was scared off by the alarms.
03:43 Now moving on to the third round of the FA Cup, which has kicked off already this week
03:47 with the final two remaining teams from Kent, Maidstone United and Gillingham set to play
03:51 their games on Saturday.
03:54 National League Southside Maidstone will face League One's Stevenage.
03:57 It's the first time the club has reached this stage of the competition in 35 years.
04:01 Meanwhile Gillingham will welcome Premier League Sheffield United to Priestfield, a
04:06 parallel to last year's third round when the Gilles hosted Leicester City.
04:10 Despite both teams' managers leading underdog sides, they remain optimistic about causing
04:14 an upset.
04:16 And then there were two.
04:18 Gillingham and Maidstone United enter into the third round of the FA Cup as the final
04:22 remaining sides from Kent, after Ramsgate bowed out of the competition in round two.
04:28 The Gilles secured their place and £67,000 worth of prize money after beating South East
04:33 rivals Charlton Athletic.
04:35 And non-league stones became the lowest ranked side still in the competition after beating
04:40 League Two Barrow at home.
04:42 Now for Maidstone, it's League One opposition Stevenage that face them in round three.
04:47 The last time these two sides faced one another was ten years ago, when then-seventh-tier
04:51 Maidstone pulled off a first-round replay shock win.
04:55 "It's going to take absolute concentration for however long the game lasts.
05:01 Our players have to be at their absolute best.
05:05 Plus we have to limit mistakes.
05:08 There shouldn't be any margin for errors tomorrow.
05:13 If we do all the right things on the day, you never know.
05:16 And a bit of luck on our side and our fan base behind us, you never know what can happen
05:22 in the 95, 96, 97, 98 minutes."
05:25 And it'll be something of a repeat fixture also for Gillingham, who in last year's third
05:30 round took on then-Premier League side Leicester City here at home.
05:35 This year it's another top-flight side in the form of Sheffield United, but in order
05:39 to force a cup upset, they'll be hoping for a much different result.
05:43 Back then, Gillingham were rock bottom of League Two and the match marked a huge turnaround
05:48 for the club.
05:49 It was the first for new chairman Brad Gallinson, who introduced himself and his family to fans
05:54 on the pitch before kick-off.
05:56 Now twelve months on and one manager later, Gillingham have a chance to pull off a giant
06:01 killing as the side are in a good run of form with 56 shots made in their past three
06:06 games.
06:07 "I'm not going to come out and say, 'Oh yeah, of course we can do it.'
06:12 It's going to be a difficult game.
06:13 As I say, we're probably going to need a lot of things to go right for us on the day.
06:18 But look, as everyone always says, it's the FA Cup and you do often see upsets in the
06:24 third round and why can't it be us?
06:26 There's no point in us playing if we're not going to believe that.
06:30 We've got to go and have a go, try and take them on and let's see where we are come Saturday
06:35 evening."
06:36 The last major FA Cup upset for Gillingham was in 2019 when they beat Premier League
06:42 Cardiff City 1-0.
06:44 So with both of our sides boasting a history of achieving great, perhaps some FA Cup magic
06:49 is on the cards this time around.
06:51 Bartholomew Hall for KMTV.
06:53 "Well with that in mind, let's take a look now at the rest of today's fixtures.
06:59 And as you've been hearing, Gillingham and Maidstone will be playing tomorrow, both at
07:02 home here in the county, with Maidstone on the early kick-off at 12.30, Gillingham at
07:06 3pm.
07:07 Both games now sold out, but if you want to keep up to date, you can of course read along
07:11 with the Kent Online Live blog.
07:14 In the National League, the reverse fixtures are well and truly underway, with Ebbs Fleet
07:18 hosting Weldstone.
07:20 Last time they went against each other, the fleet battled it out at Groves Nivelle in
07:23 33 degree heat and managed to pull off a 4-1 win.
07:27 Ebbs Fleet will need to find three points this weekend for a chance to escape the relegation
07:31 zone.
07:32 In the National League South, Dover Athletic start the new year hosting mid-table Truro.
07:36 The Whites have had a positive Christmas season, having been three games unbeaten prior to
07:40 a 2-1 loss away to Averley.
07:43 And finally, in the Izmir League Premier, second-placed Chatham will travel to Bognor
07:47 Regis in an attempt to extend a four-game unbeaten run.
07:50 Margate are at Whitehawk, whilst Folkestone and Victor will host Wingate and Finchley.
07:56 Now, we're just four days into the new year, five days rather, and people across Kent will
08:01 be thinking a lot about their New Year's resolutions.
08:03 And one of those people might be taking up running.
08:06 But what if you've never done it before?
08:07 Well, I've been speaking to Medway-based Rebel Runners.
08:10 I started by asking one of their members what they can expect if people choose to come along
08:15 this weekend.
08:16 It's run by our own in-house coach, Darren, so Coach DJ as we call him.
08:22 It's an eight-week programme where it's scheduled and planned to ensure that you can confidently
08:28 run 5k in eight weeks' time.
08:31 For some people, that's quite daunting, 5k.
08:33 Many of us haven't run since our days at school.
08:37 But actually, the programme guides you through that.
08:39 So there's a nice warm-up session at the start.
08:41 You do your programme each week with a homework session, and then there's a cool-down at the
08:46 end.
08:47 Yeah, not forgetting the cheeky homework session.
08:48 That's a really important part of it.
08:50 So it's not just a matter of coming along and being with other people, but it's kind
08:53 of the expectation that during the week when you're not with the rest of the group, to
08:56 actually carry on and keep yourself going in that way.
08:59 That's correct, yeah.
09:00 It's just one homework session.
09:01 Darren will recommend that you do.
09:03 And often we find that people buddy up.
09:05 They get to know each other throughout the course, and then they end up becoming running
09:08 buddies for life.
09:10 But yeah, certainly doing the homework is the key part.
09:13 You're given a programme.
09:14 You're following the same thing that you do on a Saturday, so you're not doing anything
09:17 new.
09:18 You've been shown it.
09:19 You've tried it.
09:20 You've got to stick between the next session.
09:21 And you mentioned there about buddying up and that kind of group aspect of it.
09:25 How long have you been part of the Runners?
09:27 Nearly 10 years.
09:28 So the club is 10 years old this year, and I joined shortly after it was formed.
09:33 So I've made lots of friends, and lots of the members are still here.
09:36 Some of them, and our founding member was there on day one, obviously, and he's still
09:38 there now.
09:40 A big part of running, and a big part of Rebel Runners, is the social part as well.
09:44 So we encourage people.
09:45 We like to do social events.
09:46 We'll do lots of races where lots of people come along and cheer you along to that.
09:50 And it becomes part of the Rebel family, and I think it's really important to remember
09:53 that running is one aspect of that.
09:56 Physical health is really important, but so is mental health and being out and being around
10:00 people.
10:01 So yeah, running is just one aspect of that.
10:03 And did you find that, because I think for many people it is that kind of getting off
10:08 the couch.
10:09 I think it's in the name, isn't it?
10:10 Getting off the sofa and getting out there and running.
10:11 Did you find that that social aspect of it kind of maybe helped you?
10:15 I don't know, was you a runner before you joined Rebel?
10:17 No, I wasn't a runner before, and actually, yes, that's exactly the difference it made
10:20 for me, because the last time I did running was at school, and the thought of putting
10:24 on the trainers and going out running was quite nerve-wracking, really.
10:28 But actually, turning up, there's lots of members we know that have signed up, so you
10:32 won't be on your own.
10:33 You won't be the only one there.
10:35 And lots of other Rebels come out to support along and take part, and we encourage that,
10:39 because actually you're enjoying yourselves.
10:41 It becomes having fun and running at the same time.
10:44 Now, our reporter was live earlier from Canterbury, where it has been raining quite a bit.
10:50 Does that stop you?
10:51 Will that put a damper on any of the plans this weekend, if it is continuing to track
10:56 it down?
10:57 Never.
10:58 So, they'll be out running in rain, sunshine, wind, as long as it's safe to do so, I should
11:02 say.
11:03 But do expect even a bit of rain and drizzle, people will still be there for the Couch 5K
11:07 at 10 o'clock on Saturday in the park.
11:09 Well, we may be coming along as well to see if we can take part.
11:14 Thank you very much for that.
11:15 You also mentioned the sessions are free as well.
11:17 Is that entirely, or is that just for this scheme?
11:21 For the sessions, the Couch 5K eight-week programme is entirely free, and at the end
11:25 of it you can join, if you've really got the running bug, you can join the Rebel Runners.
11:29 There's various bundles for that, but you also get a membership to the England Athletics
11:33 portal as well, where you can get a discount on races if you really do get the bug.
11:37 And many, many do, and many go on to run marathons.
11:40 So, hopefully you do come along, and we see lots of people have met away there as well.
11:44 Rebel Runners met away there with their Couch to 5K course, free this weekend in Chatham.
11:49 That's it, we've reached time, a half-time, which means it's time for a break, and we'll
11:53 be back with more sport right after this.

25:15 Unbothered by the dismal weather and wet roads, these intrepid cyclists rode a 2km circular route around Tunbridge with pride and determination.
25:25 And from these smiles, they're more than happy to ride any distance to promote their mission to have an inclusive space to cycle all.
