Hodgson on VAR red card and Palace cup bore draw
Transcript
00:00 Hi Roy, Sean Dyche not happy with the encounter in Red Tharn, do you understand what he did?
00:07 Yeah, I mean, Sean comes from a type of football, brought up in a type of football where those
00:17 sort of challenges were pretty commonplace and they weren't punished if people got the
00:23 ball. We now live in a slightly different world I think and that is if you go into challenges
00:28 with a straight leg and you have a bit of intent behind it, there is a risk unfortunately
00:35 that the referee will give a red card. But yeah, I have every sympathy with him. There
00:40 was definitely no malicious intent from Calvin Lewis, there's no question of that, not from
00:46 seeing it back. It's just a situation of an interpretation these days of a challenge and
00:52 the interpretation unfortunately can be that if you're straight leg and your foot's off
00:56 the ground, if you go into the challenge, it could be deemed a red card. So yeah, have
01:03 I got sympathy with him? Yes I have.
01:05 Is there a danger with VAR, I was brought in to sort of clear up those obvious mistakes,
01:09 is there a danger now that we're over-analyzing everything, slowing things down, even changing?
01:13 Well, there's no point to it really. We've been talking about that for two or three years
01:17 now and even more since the start of the season, we're getting involved in yet another debate
01:23 about whether VAR is improving or not improving the game or solving these situations. Obviously
01:29 the referees I think sometimes benefit from it because there's a situation on the field
01:34 of play where perhaps they're not quite so sure so maybe it's quite good for them to
01:37 have a backup, whispers in their ear. But I think that in every game that's played where
01:46 there is a situation like that one, there's going to be debate, there's going to be one
01:51 team very unhappy about the situation and all I can say is in answer to your question,
01:58 do I understand Sean Dyche's frustration and disappointment with the decision? Yes I do,
02:05 but I'm not prepared to criticise the referees either because of the interpretation on challenges
02:10 that they're being asked to give these days.
02:12 And how do you feel about the results, performance tonight and the prospect of a replay back?
02:17 Yeah, not great, I mean it's the last thing either of us wanted in a way, but unfortunately
02:22 it's two teams that put the effort in, defended well, were difficult to break down and unfortunately
02:31 sometimes when you get that situation where there's two teams who definitely wanted to
02:36 win the game, there was no question of anything less than determination and desire to do so,
02:43 but the two teams' defences did well enough to reduce the number of clear-cut chances
02:50 to a minimum and the game I suppose was crying out for that wonder goal or that moment of
02:56 magic and neither we nor they could produce it.
02:59 Any update on what the police say? No, no, sorry, it's only a couple of days.
03:06 The next time I have some sort of update on it probably will be before the replay.
03:11 Anyone else? John?
03:14 What did you make of Matthias Franz's first start for the club and also the performance
03:19 of Ahamed Ahamed for Everton?
03:21 Well it's very difficult for both of them. I think if you're the type of players they
03:26 are, then playing Everton is probably the last thing you want because of their physicality,
03:32 because of the need to be strong, the need to be brave, the need to win your challenges
03:37 and win your duels. That's not the type of players they are. They are players who are
03:42 technical and gifted and the sort of opportunities that came their way in the game to show what
03:49 they are good at were few and far between. But I think it was a good experience for both
03:54 of them. I think they haven't got a lot of Premier League experience. Today they're playing
03:59 against a very good Premier League team and one of the hardest teams to play against in
04:03 their organisation, their discipline, how difficult they are to break down. They got
04:08 a taste of that tonight and I think it will do them good going forward.
04:12 Are they going to have to rely on a period of soft defence to try and establish themselves
04:16 in the teams?
04:17 I don't know. It depends upon what players I've got to choose from. I have a squad of
04:24 players and they're very much in the squad of players as we've shown tonight. Being in
04:29 that squad of players, they're always in our thoughts as a possibility to use them.
04:32 Are you going to have Edouard back as well to chat?
04:35 Yeah, again he's a bit rusty after being out for quite a long period of time. He's not
04:44 playing as he did when he got injured but we've now got almost two weeks, just under
04:51 two weeks before the replay and I think in that time he will be getting better all the
04:56 time so it's very good to have him back.
04:59 I know both teams have put in a good shift there but can I ask you about scheduling in
05:05 this game because Thursday night at eight doesn't really scream FA Cup third round to
05:10 most people. You've got a squad in the Premier League, you should have finished a couple
05:14 of days ago. Does it leave you with competition justice to have been playing tonight?
05:18 I think it's a reasonable point if that's the point you're going to make when you're
05:22 writing about it. I certainly can't find a lot of reasons to dismiss your theory. I
05:30 think all the more credit in a way to both teams. It wasn't the ideal fixture, it wasn't
05:36 the ideal time to play, it wasn't the ideal physical conditions to play the game in. The
05:41 rain was non-stop for so long and the pitch was a bit wet and heavy. I think both teams,
05:47 if you're a kind person, if you've got some sympathy with the players, you could say they
05:54 made a pretty good go of it. But having said that, stalemates and nil-nil draws, even if
06:01 this game had been played on prime TV on Saturday night, it wouldn't have gone down too well
06:07 because of the way the two teams nullified each other to larger extents. That moment
06:13 of magic that certainly we were crying out for and maybe Sean would say he was crying
06:18 out for, that was not seen that often. It was more the physicality, the jaws, the organisation,
06:25 the desire, the discipline, the focus. You get ticks on all of those but what makes a
06:31 game exciting and good is goals. There will be a lot of goal chances. This was a game
06:37 that didn't have it.
06:39 Do you have a question in the back?
06:43 Offside receiver.
06:45 My offside, do I?
06:46 Sure.
06:47 Good, OK.
06:48 Thank you.
06:49 Thank you.
