00:02 - We're back at Woods Off-Road in San Marcos, California.
00:07 Johnny and I have been pecking away at the S120.
00:09 Got a lot of work to do, don't we?
00:11 - Yes.
00:12 - We've made some progress,
00:13 but we've got basically everything left to do.
00:16 So we'll catch up to speed on what's been done
00:18 and show you what we've got planned.
00:20 - Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this one.
00:21 There's a lot of custom cool stuff on it.
00:23 So come check it out.
00:24 - Right on.
00:25 (upbeat music)
00:28 - So last time we left off, this thing was just
00:30 a bare chassis.
00:31 We had the axles in and the engine was over on a stand.
00:35 We've wrapped up the engine build,
00:37 all the parts from Duralast that we ordered
00:39 through Out of Zone Pro are installed.
00:41 The hemi's complete.
00:43 We got our junkyard bell housing,
00:44 inside's a Duralast clutch, starter, everything's there.
00:48 We've got a Monster NV4500.
00:50 Monster Transmissions takes care of the fifth gear.
00:53 Problems that these things sometimes have
00:55 with the gear coming off.
00:57 And then we got the Artec high steer arm in,
00:59 so that's all welded to the knuckles.
01:01 Again, retaining the JK gas tank
01:03 and using the Sterling 10 and a half,
01:04 it's kind of known that those two don't really go together.
01:07 If you put a Sterling into a JK,
01:10 usually you have to do it like a Generite gas tank,
01:13 but I was actually able to modify this gas tank.
01:15 So it was a lot of time with a heat gun and molding.
01:18 And so you're missing about a gallon there.
01:20 - Yeah, but I'm stoked to have a JK fuel tank
01:24 in this thing because it frees up space
01:26 on the back end compared to an aftermarket fuel tank
01:28 that would go back there.
01:29 I don't have to run a cell in the bed,
01:31 so I'll actually have some bed space
01:33 and it leaves this whole side of the chassis
01:35 open for exhaust.
01:36 So it's a great solution.
01:38 I'm really excited to have 21-ish gallons under the chassis.
01:43 So for once I'll have some cargo carrying ability.
01:47 - So I think today we'll probably permanently mount the cab.
01:52 I think that one can go on.
01:54 I don't need it off anymore.
01:55 - Get this down for the last time.
01:56 Then we can mount our tires,
01:58 start positioning the front clip and do everything else.
02:02 So when I stole this T case out of the super dirty
02:11 from the 2013 and 2016 Ultimate Adventures.
02:14 - I don't think you're supposed to disclose that.
02:16 - I don't care.
02:17 That truck ran a 1410 yoke rear drive shaft.
02:21 Planted on running a 1350 CV.
02:25 So I had Steven Watson at Offroad Design
02:29 send one of his Offroad Design CV yokes, the 205.
02:34 So I'll just pop this off, drop my socket.
02:37 (yoke clatters)
02:43 - Jeez, that wasn't tight.
02:44 - Broke off.
02:47 - Shut up.
02:48 Well, that complicates things.
02:53 The threaded end of the output just snapped off
02:57 while trying to remove the nut.
03:00 - I've never seen that.
03:01 So that was, that's porous.
03:03 You can see it was cracked before.
03:05 So that thing was damaged or dinged up.
03:08 - I've literally never seen that happen.
03:09 - Yeah, that's, I'm shocked.
03:13 So we'll have to get a new shaft,
03:16 pop off this bearing retainer,
03:20 pull it out, put a new shaft in.
03:22 There's no other way around it.
03:23 (upbeat music)
03:26 We're figuring out the wiring.
03:29 Johnny's putting the Edelbrock Pro-Flow wiring harness on.
03:33 Is it gonna actually control the engine
03:35 and all those systems to run the Hemi?
03:39 What I'm doing is going through these boxes
03:41 of painless performance products wiring that arrived.
03:45 We've got all sorts of stuff we're gonna be using in here.
03:48 Nice, high quality battery cable.
03:50 So we're gonna run our winch leads
03:52 and our battery's gonna be remote mounted.
03:55 Figure out what we're gonna do there.
03:57 We've got a large switch kit.
03:59 So this includes your headlights,
04:00 dimmer switch, ignition switch.
04:03 That's the thing about painless.
04:04 They really do make it painless
04:05 to wire a vehicle from nothing, make it go.
04:09 We've got a bunch of this painless power braid stuff.
04:12 This is super nice.
04:13 And it easily installs over your wiring
04:15 after you've run it to make a nice, safe
04:18 and chafe-free protective wrap around it.
04:22 And then finally, so we've got this
04:24 painless 23-circuit Pro-Series chassis harness.
04:28 And this thing is going to be able
04:30 to control all our electrical systems,
04:33 headlights, flashers, you name it.
04:36 It's gonna have plenty of options for a key on,
04:39 powering for the fuel pump and all that other stuff.
04:44 Comes with all the terminals, accessories, connectors,
04:49 you name it, you can literally do a whole chassis,
04:52 or wire a whole car with this system.
04:54 And best of all, it'll support any additional upgrades
04:57 we do down the road.
04:58 Like if we do add AC blowers, wipers, things like that.
05:03 (upbeat music)
05:06 (upbeat music)
05:08 So these are my favorite bead locks.
05:24 These are Trail Ready HD-17s.
05:27 I've run them on several of my vehicles,
05:29 never had a problem.
05:30 They're super strong.
05:33 They don't leak, the bolts don't loosen up on them.
05:36 And in my opinion, I like the styling
05:39 better than anything out there.
05:40 And they're an 8-on-1-70 bolt pattern
05:43 to match the Super Duty axles.
05:44 And we're mounting a set of 40 by 13-17
05:47 Milestar Patagonia MT-02s.
05:50 These are same tires we just got done
05:53 ringing out on Ultimate Adventure.
05:54 They did great, they're very, very durable, very tough.
05:57 Even with my, close your eyes, hammer down
06:01 and don't look where you're going driving style.
06:04 Shouldn't be blowing any tires, I don't think.
06:07 So I'm just cinching these up.
06:08 I'm not actually tightening them
06:10 with the selector ratchet.
06:14 Then once I get them kind of all snug,
06:19 I'll start my torque passes.
06:20 The thing about bead lock bolts is
06:26 when you tighten one bolt, it'll pull the ring down.
06:30 So that bolt you just tightened will now be looser.
06:33 So you're gonna be going over these things several times,
06:37 several passes before they're all down to spec.
06:42 So you just gotta be patient, sit here
06:43 and keep manning the torque wrench.
06:45 (upbeat music)
06:48 That's like a radioactive, I forget what they call it,
07:09 but they used to put it on watches and stuff
07:11 and it would give you cancer.
07:12 - Really?
07:13 - Yeah.
07:14 - It glows in the dark.
07:15 - They glow in the dark?
07:16 Yeah.
07:17 - Back in the day, it would glow in the dark, yeah.
07:18 - Is that a turn signal indicator?
07:21 - Yeah, these things.
07:22 - What are those?
07:24 - I don't know, but they're rad.
07:26 You know what, it's probably for like the vents
07:27 or something, they go pretty solid.
07:28 - I'm gonna polish one so it--
07:30 - No, I'd be so upset.
07:32 - Oh, damn.
07:35 Hey, can you hand me some of that WD-40 specialist gel lube?
07:40 (upbeat music)
07:42 Oh man.
07:48 - Wow.
07:49 - That actually works really well.
07:52 This is your vintage air conditioning.
07:55 So you'd leave this down in normal driving cold weather,
08:00 but if it was hot and you wanted to force some air
08:03 into the interior, you could just raise this up
08:07 by varying degrees.
08:09 And as you're going down the road,
08:11 the air will come right in and just,
08:13 it gets funneled into the cabin here.
08:16 These things didn't have sliding rear windows,
08:18 so it was really hard to get the air moving in the cabin.
08:21 I'm stoked that thing works.
08:23 That's awesome.
08:24 (upbeat music)
08:27 (upbeat music)
08:30 I kind of have this thing, it's not really intentional,
08:49 but I generally tend to not have functional gauges
08:52 in my vehicle.
08:53 It's just not something I really care about.
08:55 I'm probably not gonna be running any of these gauges
08:58 to monitor engine functions,
08:59 especially because the Edelbrock Pro Flow
09:02 has this tablet that comes with it.
09:05 And I can have a dashboard display with this
09:07 of what the Hemi's doing under the hood.
09:11 I can also check RPM and other things like that.
09:14 And then I've usually run a GPS for my speedo.
09:16 However, I don't wanna just stick this modern thing up here
09:20 on a grip mount.
09:22 So I think what I'm gonna do is kind of design a bracket
09:26 out of cardboard.
09:27 I don't do CAD or any of that fancy stuff like Johnny.
09:30 So I want it mounted here
09:32 so I can see it from the driver's seat,
09:35 but I also don't want it to look modern
09:37 and kind of, you know, swoopy.
09:40 So I think my idea, this truck is 1956,
09:44 and the old TVs from the 50s had like this kind of border
09:47 around the outside of it.
09:50 So I'm gonna design a bracket here with cardboard.
09:54 I'll build a template that I can have SenCutSend
09:58 bend and cut out.
10:00 And then when it comes,
10:01 I can just mount my little TV screen here
10:04 and it'll look all cool.
10:06 And I even might have it done out of copper.
10:09 So eventually it'll patina and look like a nice old penny.
10:12 (upbeat music)
10:14 That's always like when you turn the page
10:31 and you realize what the book is about.
10:33 You know, you get the wheels and tires on,
10:35 it starts to actually look like a vehicle.
10:37 This is where I get all excited.
10:39 It's really cool.
10:41 (metal clanking)
10:43 Okay, okay.
10:44 Don't tighten those.
10:46 I'd really like to leave this like it is.
10:57 Yeah, let's not mess with the body lines too, too much.
11:00 We're fitting, we wanna fit the front clip on here
11:03 and just see how things are lining up,
11:04 but the fender doesn't fit
11:06 over this huge 40 inch Patagonia tire.
11:09 So Johnny's gonna just little by little
11:11 start trimming it away
11:13 till we can drop the fender on here.
11:16 There's a lot of things that are different
11:18 between the chassis that this thing originally sat on.
11:21 I mean, the JK frame horns come up quite a bit.
11:24 The factory S120 frame was virtually flat.
11:28 The rails hardly had any arc in them at all.
11:30 So this is up quite a bit more
11:32 than what that is designed for.
11:34 So we'll get it to fit
11:35 and then we'll see how we're gonna attach
11:37 the front clip onto there.
11:39 Now that we've actually got this thing in place,
11:46 kind of where it goes,
11:48 it does seem the factory location's gonna work.
11:51 We've got room for the headlight bucket.
11:53 This is more or less full stuff
11:55 in the worst case scenario
11:56 with the tire turned all the way to the driver's side.
11:59 So I think we're gonna just leave the fender
12:02 in the stock location.
12:03 It's gonna give it a sinister, mean, low down stance.
12:06 It'll give the impression that the vehicle's lower overall,
12:09 which is kind of what I like.
12:11 So yeah, I think we'll just make this fit
12:16 and just stick it right back in the factory location.
12:19 (upbeat music)
12:21 One of the things we'd like to do
12:28 when we're building these things from scratch like this
12:30 is find the best place to mount all of our components.
12:34 So right now I'm trying to figure out
12:35 where to put the battery.
12:37 We're running an Odyssey Extreme AGM battery,
12:40 and so that's an absorbent glass mat.
12:42 It's not a wet cell like a normal battery.
12:45 It's dry, and the benefit to that is
12:48 you can mount it in any orientation, really,
12:51 and it's not gonna leak.
12:52 So what I'm thinking of doing
12:53 is putting it down in the chassis somewhere here
12:56 and building a protective box around it,
12:58 and then we'll run our leads to it.
13:00 This particular Odyssey is a group 34/78,
13:04 so it has both the top posts of a group 34
13:08 and the side posts of a group 78,
13:10 so you have a lot of options
13:11 in how you're gonna mount it and orient it.
13:14 This one's 850 cold cranking amps, super powerful,
13:18 but it also has 135 minutes of reserved capacity,
13:21 so these are just some of the best batteries out there.
13:24 (upbeat music)
13:27 We're just gonna pull this fender apart
13:30 so we can trim it, get it on there,
13:32 and we're only gonna use part of the inner fender liner.
13:35 Problem is, International just uses
13:37 panel after panel after panel,
13:38 and everything's attached with bolts.
13:41 So after 70 or so years, everything's quite rusty.
13:45 So we gave everything a good soak
13:48 in WD-40 specialist penetrant,
13:51 and now that things are loosened up,
13:54 we're just gonna disassemble it,
13:56 get it on the car, and then put together what we need.
13:58 (upbeat music)
14:01 (upbeat music)
14:04 We've been getting some progress done.
14:15 The drivetrain is in here, it's bolted down,
14:17 all the mounts are done, the cab is cinched down,
14:21 axles are in, and today was a milestone day.
14:23 We actually got the wheels and tires on this thing
14:26 and started cutting the sheet metal to fit.
14:29 Johnny, what's the game plan from here out?
14:32 - So most of the wiring for the motor's already done,
14:35 so hopefully this upcoming week,
14:37 I should be able to get this thing fired.
14:39 Painless wiring harness is gonna go in.
14:41 I still obviously have to finish up with the sheet metal,
14:44 finish steering, winch.
14:45 - Cooling system.
14:46 - There's a plethora of things.
14:48 - Lot more stuff to do.
14:49 We're gonna keep working behind the scenes here
14:51 because our wheeling day is coming up fast.
14:53 (upbeat music)
14:58 (drill whirring)
15:01 (upbeat music)
15:30 - All right, it's alive.
15:32 Yeah, and it's obviously sitting on an ammo can,
15:37 so we've got more work to do,
15:39 but the Hemi's running great.
15:41 We got the NV4500 in here for monster transmissions.
15:45 These were in the vehicle when I got it
15:49 from Jeff at IH Parts,
15:51 and so I really kind of wanted this as a shifter,
15:53 so Shane built that up.
15:55 We've got the Magnum shifter here.
15:57 Johnny made a really trick shifter setup.
16:00 Got the twin sticks for the 205,
16:02 and Shane built a killer floor here.
16:04 Everything's bolted down.
16:07 Everything's together.
16:08 Suspension's tight.
16:09 All the Skyjacker stuff's cinched up.
16:11 PSE steering's bled.
16:13 We got the Wilwood brakes in, clutch.
16:15 We have some more stuff to do.
16:17 We're not really gonna make our wheeling day,
16:20 but we don't wanna rush it.
16:22 That's not the way we do things here.
16:23 We don't just go for TV done, you know?
16:25 So we're gonna take our time, get it done right.
16:28 Got probably a couple more weeks.
16:30 Outside, I mean, Johnny built a sick bumper.
16:34 We've had the IH Parts America radiator in.
16:38 We cut the fenders full stuff,
16:41 so we're not gonna have any tire rubbing.
16:43 For me, it was really important to keep all the patina,
16:46 all the body lines, all the little things that make this
16:49 a survivor of this many years, you know?
16:51 So someone at some point in time had the spare tire here.
16:54 I wanna keep this 'cause it's part of the vehicle's history.
16:57 The cool little hooks with the square bolts.
16:59 I mean, it sounds dumb to some people,
17:01 but for me, this is what makes a car like this
17:04 really special.
17:05 When we hung the bed on here,
17:07 we were contemplating moving the fenders.
17:11 It's just Shane Wardle had the idea,
17:13 why don't we just, instead of taking eight inches
17:15 off one side, we'll take four and four.
17:18 It's double the amount of work,
17:19 but he did a great job sectioning four inches
17:21 out of the back from the center line of the rear axle
17:24 and four inches out of the front.
17:26 And then he even, he got the bed contours inside to match.
17:31 This thing's kind of slung down low.
17:33 JK frames rise in the front and rise in the back.
17:36 The factory frame on this was pretty much flat.
17:39 So we just cut the floor of the bed out,
17:41 frenched it down over it, and it's cool.
17:44 It's not like I'm gonna be hauling gravel
17:46 in this thing or anything.
17:48 We might cap it over, but I'm perfectly fine with it
17:51 the way it is.
17:53 We got a 1350 CVs at both front and rear drive shaft.
17:57 And the front's running a 1350 joint at the axle
18:00 and the rear is a 1410 joint.
18:02 So if these things can survive Tiger LeBron,
18:05 I shouldn't be hurting them.
18:07 - Oh yeah, in the van?
18:09 That's crazy.
18:10 As you can see, we got tail back half wiring to do.
18:14 - Yeah, we still have to do tail lights and--
18:16 - There's too many wires here.
18:17 It should only need like three.
18:19 (upbeat music)
18:21 - You wanna take it out and see what the suspension does
18:24 with the forklift?
18:24 - Yeah, let's do it.
18:25 - I think this will be the first time
18:27 it moves under its own power.
18:28 - It will, yeah.
18:29 - All right.
18:30 (upbeat music)
18:33 This is actually the first time I've seen it
18:40 without two lift posts kind of blocking the view.
18:43 So you get to see all the proportions and everything.
18:47 Man, I love it.
18:47 I just absolutely love it.
18:49 When Jeff Ismail first shared photos of this thing with me,
18:53 probably three, four years ago,
18:55 like this is the picture that came into my brain.
18:58 It's sitting right there.
19:00 (upbeat music)
19:02 But it's not going away.
19:09 - No.
19:10 - It's definitely not going away 'cause we're not done yet.
19:12 - No.
19:13 - So we got it running and driving,
19:14 but we're gonna keep plugging along here
19:16 and getting everything finished.
19:17 I'll keep the content going.
19:20 Check my Instagram page @hbombindustries
19:22 or @ultimateadventureofficial or--
19:26 - @woodsoffroad.
19:28 I'll be covering it.
19:29 So I still got the cage, sliders, rear bumper,
19:31 winch, vintage air, under carriage lights from Lux.
19:34 - Yep.
19:35 So we're gonna be posting all the content
19:36 as the build progresses
19:38 and then we'll be out wheeling and hitting the trails.
