Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told her EU partners that curbing migration flows from African countries has less to do with offers of charity than strong partnerships coupled with strategic investments in those nations.
Transcript
00:00 The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Moloni, said at an end-of-year press conference that
00:06 curbing migration flows from African countries is about investment, not charity.
00:11 Our correspondent Giorgia Olandi tells us more.
00:15 The traditional end-of-year press of Italy's Prime Minister has been already postponed
00:20 twice and it finally took place today.
00:23 The delay was due to the fact that Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Moloni has been recently
00:27 struggling with several health problems.
00:30 Now today was the occasion for the Prime Minister to respond to a number of questions.
00:38 In fact the press lasted for almost three hours touching on the most pressing issues
00:45 from the state of Italy's economy to the next European elections.
00:48 Giorgia Moloni explained that she has not yet decided whether or not she will run in
00:53 those elections and she said that she's ruling out the possibility of forming any coalition
00:58 with left-wing parties.
01:01 She then went on addressing the migrant crisis which is a very sensitive topic here in Italy
01:07 given the fact that the country has been on the front line in the fight against illegal
01:11 immigration for quite some time.
01:13 She said that she's not yet satisfied with the results that her government has achieved
01:18 so far.
01:19 More needs to be done and she said that the solution to the problem lies in the possibility
01:26 of investing more resources in the externalisation of border control especially when it comes
01:32 to building new partnerships with Africa.
01:36 In fact she said that Africa will be the main topic that will be discussed in the next G7
01:44 summit that will take place under the Italian presidency.
01:48 She also touched on the new constitutional reform that her government recently proposed
01:55 and that is being debated in parliament.
01:57 She said that the reform is not going to change the role of the head of state but would rather
02:03 make future Italian governments last longer.
