The prospect of a radical rightward shift in the summer's Europe-wide polls has centrist and left-wing legislators pushing hard to get policy through.
Transcript
00:00 The European Parliament will add more votes to its schedule in the next few months as it attempts to push through legislation before elections.
00:10 There will be more voting sessions added to each of its monthly meetings.
00:14 Europeans go to the polls in June, meaning lawmakers' last chance to vote on more than 100 pieces of proposed legislation will be in late April.
00:24 So, to be clear, what we would be voting?
00:31 It's true that there will be plenary sessions here in Strasbourg with many issues to vote on.
00:36 Normally, what can be done is to add a voting session, for example, in the afternoon, so as not to vote more than two or three consecutive hours,
00:43 so that the deputies keep their concentration. You can't be voting for hours and hours.
00:54 The Parliament will have to vote on key laws such as the Migration Pact, artificial intelligence and the new fiscal rules of the bloc.
01:01 In Brussels, many think the accelerated process is down to a predicted surge of right-wing MEPs in the next elections.
01:10 Those MEPs could block many of the proposed laws, meaning current lawmakers want to get them through now.
01:16 But many see the latest EU proposals on migration and the Green Deal as dangerous attempts to please the far right.
01:23 There are still many other files on the Green Deal side.
01:28 There's this infamous Asylum and Migration Pact 2, on which there's an agreement that won't solve anything,
01:36 and that basically follows the footsteps of the radical right, which I think is also a big mistake.
01:44 I would say, if I look at what my group is going to do between now and the end of the term, it will be to play defense.
01:54 Because what I believe is that the vast majority is sleepwalking the European Union into disaster, and we must prevent that.
02:11 According to the latest opinion polls, far right and radical forces in the European Parliament could make gains in the June elections,
02:18 with the mainstream parties and Greens losing their seats.
02:22 Gracias.
