00:00 The year was 2019, a time when many new faces were tipped to replace the goat Serena Williams
00:07 at the top.
00:09 A 17-year-old New Jersey girl defeated all the odds at the French Open and went on to
00:15 eliminate many big names in her killing spree.
00:20 Welcome to the Rich Rabbit and today we'll be talking about the life journey of Amanda
00:25 Anissimova.
00:28 Amanda was born in Freehold Township, New Jersey, to Olga Anissimova and the late Konstantin
00:34 Anissimov.
00:36 She has an older sister, Maria, who played college tennis for the University of Pennsylvania
00:42 while attending Wharton's undergraduate business school.
00:47 Her parents immigrated from Russia to the US a few years before she was born to give
00:53 their older daughter better opportunities.
00:58 They worked in the finance and banking industries, and neither played competitive tennis while
01:03 growing up.
01:05 Anissimova started playing tennis at age 5.
01:09 She credits her sister as her inspiration for taking up the sport.
01:15 Her family moved to Florida when she was very young so Amanda and her sister would have
01:20 more opportunities to train and find other coaches.
01:24 Her father long acted as her primary coach while she was a junior and her mother also
01:30 helped coach her.
01:32 Additionally, she had worked with Nick Saviano starting from when she was 11 years old.
01:39 Max Fomin, who has also been an assistant coach for the Bryan Brothers, has served as
01:44 her traveling coach.
01:47 Amanda achieved the Korea High ITF Junior Ranking of No. 2 in the world in 2016.
01:55 She went on to win many prestigious junior titles and made her professional debut at
02:00 the US Open qualifying.
02:04 She won her debut match against world No. 124 Veronica Sapedroik at the age of 14, before
02:12 losing in the following round.
02:15 After winning her junior title at the 2017 Copa Gerdau in February, Amanda stayed in
02:21 Brazil and played in a $25,000 event in Curitiba.
02:27 She reached her first final on the Pro Tour at the tournament, despite this being her
02:32 first professional main draw.
02:35 A few weeks later, Amanda was awarded a wild card into the Miami Open, where she lost to
02:41 Taylor Townsend in three sets.

02:55 She managed to reach back-to-back finals at the 80K event in Indian Harbor Beach and the

03:05 These results also helped her crack the top 300 of the WTA rankings.
03:12 In her Grand Slam debut, she lost her first-round match at the French Open to Kurumi Nara.
03:18 Nonetheless, she became the youngest player to participate in the main draw since Elisee
03:24 Cornette in 2005.
03:28 After foregoing the grass court season, Amanda continued to play on the ITF Pro Circuit.
03:36 She broke into the top 200 by capturing her first career professional title at the 60K
03:42 event in Sacramento, California, towards the end of July while she was only 15.

04:08 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and then Petra Kvitva, ending Kvitva's 14-match win streak.
04:17 But all good things come to an end and eventually her run ended against Karolina Pliskova.
04:24 Anissimola was also awarded a wild card into the Miami Open.
04:29 She won her opening match against Wang Qian despite injuring her right foot in the third
04:35 set.
04:37 This injury forced her to withdraw from the tournament and kept her out for four months.
04:42 At the time, she had risen to a career-high ranking of No. 128 in the world.
04:49 After losing her opening match as a wild card at the US Open, Anissimola next entered the

05:09 before the final.
05:13 She defeated top seed and world No. 41 Xiang Shuai in the semifinals before finishing runner-up
05:20 to second seed Xie Shuai.
05:25 With this fabulous performance, she cracked the top 100 for the first time.

05:36 of the 2019 Australian Open.
05:40 She won her first three matches in straight sets, including a victory over one of the
05:45 favorites for the title in world No. 11 Arena Sabalenka before losing to eventual finalist
05:52 Kvitua.
05:54 The following two months, she did not register more than a single match win at any of her
05:59 next four tournaments.
06:02 Anissimola closed out the clay court season by becoming the youngest semifinalist at the
06:07 French Open since Vyacheslav Dyshova in 2006.
06:12 During the tournament, she defeated No. 11 Sabalenka again in the second round and then
06:18 upset the defending champion and won No. 3 Simona Halep in the quarterfinals.
06:25 She did not lose a set until the semifinals, when she was defeated by the eventual champion
06:31 and world No. 8 Ashley Barty.
06:35 Late in August, tragedy struck her.
06:37 She withdrew from the US Open following the death of her father.
06:42 She entered two more tournaments afterwards, winning one match in total before ending her
06:47 year early.
06:49 Nonetheless, she reached as high as No. 21 in the world near the end of the season.
06:56 She qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy, the second-tier year-end championship, but did
07:01 not accept the invitation.
