00:00 Arthur took his father now he'll take his life here's your look at the
00:04 McFarland toys DC multiverse Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Black Manta
00:11 Considered one of Aquaman's greatest enemies Black Manta has a singular hatred for the King of Atlantis.
00:35 For decades Mantra's true name and motives were shrouded in mystery
00:39 hidden behind the menacing oversized helmet. In modern times however his true
00:43 motivations have been revealed. No matter the era Black Manta has always inflicted
00:47 a special kind of pain upon its archenemy cementing his reputation of
00:51 one of the most ruthless and driven criminals in DC history. While Manta
00:56 seeks the dead King's trident let's grab the tape measure and see how tall the
00:59 figure stands. Of the four figures that make up the new Aquaman and the Lost
01:02 Kingdom the one I was the most interested in was Black Manta. Of my all
01:06 time one of my all-time favorite villains in comics he actually easily
01:09 makes the top five. Black Manta though this time around looks stunning and I
01:13 have to include of course the hoses on the back of his head of course that will
01:16 make the figure a little bit taller that gives us a figure that's about seven
01:19 and a third and three quarters of an inch in height or roughly about 19
01:23 centimeters tall. For your required figure comparison here's what the figure
01:27 looks like with Aquaman and while I did think in fact that Black Manta was
01:30 going to be a taller figure even including the hoses on the back of his
01:33 head he is in fact slightly shorter than Arthur Curry here. While I will credit
01:38 McFarlane's team for including bells and whistles with Black Manta the one thing
01:42 unfortunately the figure is lacking though is the black trident. The whole
01:45 purpose I think of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom it's even advertised in fact on
01:50 the trading card that comes included with Manta is that the figure has the
01:53 black trident in his hand and yet the figure doesn't come included with it. He
01:57 comes though with a flight stand and that's nice to see because we don't get
02:00 that too often when it comes to these releases and to be honest honestly fair
02:04 he also comes included with thrusters that go on the back of his jetpack. I
02:07 still wish that the figure could have come included with a black trident. I'm
02:10 almost even tempted to take my very warped looking Justice League - oh look at
02:14 a sad state this is in - maybe even painting this black and giving him a
02:18 serviceable trident in the meantime. I'm sure that might also mean that we're
02:21 probably going to be getting a future release down the road of maybe another
02:24 Black Manta gold edition maybe that's going to come included with the trident.
02:27 One only knows. Going back though to the trading card this is definitely looking
02:31 more like something you would see in the comics. I mean again to bring back in the
02:34 Aquaman it's kind of really hard to see where you want to settle on. I mean like
02:38 I like the look of this card but I don't know if I really like it as much when it
02:41 came to Aquaman because again like it's kind of got more like a like a comic
02:44 book panel look. You can decide for yourself if you actually like the
02:47 approach that they're doing with these movie tie-in trading cards. We flip
02:51 around though to the back the thing I I didn't really mention though with
02:54 Aquaman I'll mention here with Manta is that the back of the card only gives you
02:58 really descriptions of sort of the generalized breakdown of what the
03:01 characters are and more their backstory. It does give little to no mention at all
03:04 of Aquaman in the Lost Kingdom. I feel like really with cards like this it's
03:08 not like they have to reuse the cards that we got from already released
03:11 figures. This is the first time we're getting I believe this card so why not
03:14 just include a read up on the back for example specific to the movie or unless
03:18 they just really want to give a generic breakdown for that specific character.
03:21 I'm gonna be adding both these cards. I know I did say this in the earlier
03:24 review I was gonna put this card away in my trading card sheet but I know still
03:26 looking at the other now two figures probably gonna just be ultimately
03:29 bringing those back. So I already mentioned the figure does come included
03:32 with a flight stand more like a swimming stand this time around. It actually
03:36 consists of two parts so of course you got yourself the adjustable neck.
03:38 Sometimes these are a little stubborn and stay in place. You just want to pop
03:41 that out. You get to basically a larger oversized stand. I mean I've already
03:46 done the comparisons of these before but if you put it inside I mean this is the
03:48 regular black DC multiverse stand. You can really see how much bigger the
03:52 clearer ones are. It has though still the DC logo printed on. I love the fact that
03:56 they do do that and if you really wanted to you don't necessarily have to use it
03:59 with the adjustable neck. I mean this you could easily just leave off and you use
04:03 only just the stand alone because it does have still a peg that can attach to
04:06 either one of Black Manta's boots. If you'd rather they'll go all out just
04:10 take the neck and there's a little open groove right here. You just take the end
04:13 of it and slide it in place and basically you want to push it all the
04:16 way in until it locks in. Can you hear that? I hope so. Once that's snapped in
04:20 place you still have the peg but now you've got the benefit of an adjustable
04:23 waist clip. The clip not only moves up and down this way so if you want to have
04:27 them more in a swimming pose you can do that or if you want to have them upright
04:29 you can also do that as well. This opens and closes and fits nicely though around
04:33 Black Manta's waist. Just simply take this and clip it around his waist. The
04:38 thing about it unfortunately though is his backpack is pretty close in quarters so
04:42 when you are attaching you want to just make sure that it's all the way on there.
04:44 But yeah you can get Black Manta in a swimming pose probably a little bit more
04:48 of an interesting pose than what I've got right now. To add on to that though
04:51 the figure also comes included with these thruster effects. These effects
04:55 look very similar to one we got with the Batman Beyond figure. I don't know if
04:58 it's probably the same ones because the Batman Beyond would have had to attach
05:01 onto the undersides of his boots so they probably would have used smaller pegs. So
05:04 I think these are brand new molds. These though attach onto the back or I
05:08 should say the bottom of his jetpack here. See these little holes on the back
05:12 here? You're just gonna take the pegs and fit them in place. Very easy. You don't
05:16 have to do much pressure at all in order to get them in there and it gives you
05:18 again a little bit more shelf appeal when it comes to displaying the figure.
05:21 It makes probably little to no sense to have the figure just standing on the
05:24 shelf with the thrusters out like this. But yeah if you wanted to attach them
05:28 onto the display stand like I did do at the beginning of this review just clip
05:30 it in place and then you can have Black Manta swimming around. Get these off
05:36 right now. I'm gonna put those to the side. Get a stunning look at Black Manta.
05:40 What a gorgeous looking figure this is. Biased I'm sure very heavily biased by
05:44 the idea I just really love Black Manta. One of my all-time top five.
05:48 If not for top five I would say top ten. Nah I would say top five. Black Manta
05:53 does look good. I'm glad to see when I even came with the original Black Manta
05:57 in the first Aquaman film that they kept the basics of his costume still in place.
06:01 Like they didn't feel the need to redesign his helmet necessarily. They
06:04 may have colored it differently maybe from the comics but even like with the
06:07 follow-up film it looks still like Black Manta. He's less black in the sense that
06:12 his helmet is a lot more silver this time around. You have of course these
06:16 very large ruby stone eyes. You can't really quite see anything that's inside
06:20 other than just to know that it's translucent plastic that they're using.
06:23 That coloring still comes over onto the sides here with these little slits that
06:27 he has on the sides. Although whereas this would have been using translucent
06:30 red plastic the slits on the side are clearly painted instead. Then he's got
06:34 these big long hoses. These are softer plastic. They run from the top of of
06:38 course his dome helmet all the way back to his breathing apparatus and breathing
06:41 tank back to the sections here of course where again the thrusters are gonna be
06:44 coming out the back with some of it in a little accent areas there of the red
06:47 that match the nice red that they've also got inside here. I really like the
06:51 way that they've designed this and even like seeing as he is in the film I
06:54 haven't yet seen Aquaman the second Aquaman film but just seeing him in
06:58 action just love Aquaman. I just love Black Manta and I love the way they've
07:02 actually presented him in the films. I would love to also see this guy maybe
07:05 get a future release down the road where hey why not they could also add like
07:08 little beams of rays that he gets shot out from the front of his eyes. Maybe do
07:13 this guy's release as a statue down the road. McFarlane getting some ideas. He also
07:17 has some nice silver there on the gauntlet that he has on the side of his
07:19 arm which I think extends out a blade which unfortunately is on this actual
07:23 figure but still the fact that they would have added a little bit of
07:26 additional sculpting there on the forearm breaks up the otherwise mostly
07:30 all black and blue that he has for the majority of his costume. The colors are a
07:33 little out of place in some of the areas like for example you can see like in his
07:37 trunk sections these are a softer plastic for they use for the trunks to
07:40 of course conceal the joints for the legs. You can see very obviously
07:44 everything basically is on it on the figure that's shiny. His arms, his torso,
07:48 his lower legs and that just abruptly here kind of goes to more of a semi
07:52 gloss finish. I don't know why it had to be a different color. I mean to the
07:56 credit at least they did finish off and continue the trend. You can see how
08:00 he's got... let me just bring the torso back here for a second... see how he's got the
08:03 silver there on the top of his torso continues on nicely there but I
08:06 just kind of wish that they could have added a little bit more blue on the
08:08 front of it because he has sort of these splotched sections doing this with my
08:12 hands. He's got it on his arms. He's got it especially here on the torso where you can
08:15 see there's a lot of additional blue that they've added to the otherwise
08:17 black plastic. He's also got it down below here on his legs. Some of the areas
08:21 like his knees for example you can clearly see are different pieces so like
08:24 they're all solid in blue. Well again there's only just kind of like just
08:27 sprinklings of blue all across the figure's body. He's got some blue there
08:30 also on the sides of his legs. One thing I did want to mention though is looking
08:34 at the inside of his legs. I don't know if they're deliberately doing this but
08:37 you can kind of see this sort of almost like a surface damage to the actual
08:42 plastic itself. I don't know if it's supposed to be like that. It could have
08:45 just come off the assembly line the way that they painted it because it almost
08:48 looks like there's the plastic underneath the plastic color and then
08:51 there's sort of this I don't know kind of splotchiness across the tops of his
08:55 thighs. I mean you could chalk it up to just that's his wetsuit but like
08:59 looking at it you can kind of see there's a few little again little
09:01 obvious areas on his thighs that kind of look like they're almost
09:05 imperfections the way they painted the figure. But other than that I mean like it's a
09:08 really nice looking figure. I love the tread that they put on the bottoms of
09:11 his feet. Of course I already mentioned the figure does have pegs on the
09:13 undersides of his feet. You don't have to necessarily use the flight stand either.
09:16 Hey why not? If you want to just use the regular black display stand it attaches
09:19 on the bottom of his feet the exact same way. Now for the figure's articulation.
09:23 I'm gonna slow things down. I'm getting really excited and talking way too fast.
09:27 The figure does have a ball joint in the base of his head so of course you can
09:30 rotate the head back and forth. My original concern was the fact if I was
09:34 to bring the head down for example these hoses would get very tight and
09:37 eventually rip. You can see like there's enough allowance here to bring the head
09:40 back. I mean how much is there? Even bringing the head down it never gets to a
09:44 point I feel where the the hoses get too tight where I worry that something's
09:47 gonna break on it. That also is the same as well when you hinge the head back and
09:51 forth. The only thing you wouldn't want to do obviously is rotate the head. The
09:54 moment you start to turn it too far that's where you're gonna cause damage
09:56 on the back of the hoses. You don't want that. The upper torso is gonna be on a
10:00 ball joint once again. You've got the lower abdomen area ball joints that also
10:04 rotates and like usually with all these DC multiverse figures you also get the
10:08 rotation in the arms. The arms for Black Manta because there's no shoulder pads
10:12 or anything like that he gets a full 90 degree angle bent giving us a capital T.
10:16 The figure does have a swivel in his bicep. That's actually the same on both
10:20 sides. The figure also does have, although tight on this side, a double hinge on the
10:24 elbow and the hands do rotate all the way around. Even on the side that actually
10:28 has the gauntlet there's nothing really that gets in the way preventing the wrist
10:31 from rotating all the way around. Legs do split out once again using a ratcheted
10:35 joint. You can take those legs and move them forward, move them back and there's
10:38 also a swivel at the top of the thigh. The figure has a double hinge on the knee a
10:42 little on the tighter side but again I don't mind. Ankle pivot back and forth.
10:46 Ankle pivot this way and of course always appreciate the fact the figure
10:49 does have toe articulation. Whether you decide to use it or not I don't mind when
10:53 companies like McFarlane add toe articulation. All in all though, I mean
10:57 without really even looking at the other two remaining figures from the new
11:00 Aquaman wave, bringing back in Aquaman speaking of which, I would say right away
11:04 Black Manta is my favorite figure. I mean I have seen the other figures I mean
11:08 they're okay they're they're not bad figures at all but really for me the
11:12 real reason first of all why I even want to see the new Aquaman movie is solely
11:16 for the actions of what's gonna be going on with this guy and also for the fact
11:20 of picking up this wave. Yes obviously I did want to pick up this wave because
11:23 I'm a big collector of DC multiverse figures but I really at the end of the day
11:26 I'm also very extremely biased when it comes to Black Manta. One of the best
11:30 Black Manta figures and we haven't really gotten a lot was also that Page
11:33 Punchers Black Manta which I had to do the review of. I really should have
11:37 honestly brought that guy in for comparison's sake as well. I did do the
11:40 review of that one if you wanted to check out the Page Punchers Black Manta.
11:42 I think this now counts on one hand to Black Manta. There's also going to be a
11:46 black and white variant release of that Page Punchers release that we are gonna
11:50 be looking at an upcoming review. But yeah I really like this one. It doesn't even
11:54 necessarily need to belong in the filmverse lineup either so you are
11:57 looking to probably pass on the majority of this wave and only really pick up
12:01 Black Manta. This is the figure that doesn't necessarily have to belong in a
12:04 filmverse. It's easily one that you can have just on display with the rest of
12:08 your DC comic figures. While my anxiousness to put Black Manta on the
12:11 shelf may have to be postponed until of course we look at the remaining two
12:14 figures from the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, I might though take my own
12:17 advice and put this guy on the shelf not as a movie tie-in figure but rather one
12:21 that's tied to the comics. Usually the timeline when it comes to me displaying
12:25 anything on my shelf is when a movie is hot and is movie tie-in figures. I tend
12:29 to put them on the shelf for only about a month or so after the movie is out and
12:32 when the movie starts to cool off both in the theaters and in my own memories
12:36 then usually I'll rotate the figures out with something new. That was the case
12:39 with the Suicide Squad. That certainly was the case as well with Black Adam
12:42 figures. They serve their purpose and for at least right now they're relegated to
12:46 totes until eventually I decide how I want to have the display updated so to
12:50 speak. Black Adam being of course or Black Manta being the case of a character
12:55 that looks just pretty much like he did in the comics. I was happy at least when
12:58 it came to the designing of this of the suit the way that helmet looked in the
13:02 film that you know the term if it ain't broke don't fix it. Well there was
13:05 certainly nothing broken about Black Manta's design. I'm glad that the
13:09 designers chose to keep it big and blocky oversized helmet with the big
13:13 ruby red eyes. Because of that his longevity will be far beyond the point
13:17 of even when Aquaman is forgotten in the films. I'm still gonna have this guy
13:21 on display. It's one of the best if not the best Black Manta figures that we've
13:25 gotten and now of course we don't really have a long list to go by. There's also
13:27 that one that we got from the Page Punchers I did mention already. I did do
13:30 the review of that one. I love that figure but I might find that this one is
13:33 the best one that we've gotten from McFarlane's team. The oversized helmet,
13:36 the big ruby red eyes. The only thing that's really lacking on this figure is
13:40 the additional accessory of having the Black Trident. It's teased in the card.
13:43 It's obviously mentioned in the movie and yet even though he has gripping
13:47 hands they chose not to include the Black Trident. I mean obviously that's
13:50 not gonna be something that's gonna be a deal-breaker anyways. At the end of the
13:52 day it's the best Black Manta figure that we've gotten and again I can't wait
13:57 to put this guy on the shelf right after these reviews. What do you guys think of
13:59 the figure? Let me know down below in the comment section and have you guys been
14:02 at all collecting the new Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom or are you being
14:05 selective? I mean you don't have to commit completely to the idea of
14:09 collecting the entire movie wave but sometimes you probably may just be
14:12 interested in selecting out only a few characters. I know some people were
14:16 really interested only really get the Suicide Squad Harley Quinn and
14:19 completely just passed on the rest of the wave. Is that also the case here for
14:23 Aquaman? Is there any characters from this wave that you guys are interested
14:26 to pick up and add to your shelf? Let me know down below in the comment section.
14:29 In the meantime though if you guys certainly did enjoy this video one
14:32 hit with like but if you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing and
14:34 you're on board to see the remaining two reviews definitely make sure if you
14:37 haven't already done so that you hit that subscribe button down below and
14:40 you're turning on the bell notification. Of course as always guys thanks for
14:43 watching see you guys next time!
