00:12 The dead and injured were rushed to the Kuwaiti hospital
00:16 located less than 200 meters from the blast.
00:18 In Venezuela, diplomat Alex Sabs
00:24 denounced the mistreatment he received
00:26 during his time in prison at the United States
00:29 on the third edition of President Nicolás Maduro's podcast.
00:32 And in Argentina, the General Confederation of Workers
00:40 called for a national strike
00:42 with a march to the Congress to be held
00:44 on January 24th,
00:45 in rejection of the decree of necessity and urgency
00:48 issued by the government of Javier Millet.
00:50 Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:57 I'm Ana Marrero from the TeleSUR headquarters
00:59 in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:01 We'll be with the news, stay with us.
01:03 (dramatic music)
01:06 In Palestine, at least 23 people were killed
01:21 when a massive strike on a residential building in Rafah's
01:24 other Gaza Authority.
01:26 The dead and injured were rushed to the Kuwaiti hospital
01:29 located less than 200 meters from the blast.
01:31 Many of the affected were assisted by doctors
01:35 outside the building.
01:36 There are also reported bombings of towns
01:39 and refugee camps across the Strip.
01:40 The ground offensive against Hamas
01:43 has expensed too much of the territory
01:47 and forced thousands to flee their homes and shelters.
01:55 The Palestinian Red Crescent Society
01:57 denounced Israeli forces attack
01:58 the vicinity of the Al-Mal Hospital in Qanunis
02:01 for the fifth time in less than a week,
02:03 leaving at least 10 people dead and 10 wounded.
02:06 According to the authorities,
02:07 the majority of those affected were displaced persons
02:10 taking refuge in the Red Crescent headquarters
02:12 in the hospital after being forced from their homes
02:16 as a result of the Israeli bombings.
02:18 The Red Crescent also urged the international community
02:21 to address the situation in the Gaza Strip.
02:24 Hamas official Osama Handam said on Thursday in Lebanon
02:33 that a militant group is open to any proposal
02:36 for a complete cessation of aggressions against Gaza
02:38 and reiterated the group's official position
02:41 that management of the Palestinian issue
02:43 is an internal Palestinian national decision.
02:45 Regarding the political initiatives and proposals
02:50 that are being talked about,
02:51 we first confirmed the movement's openness
02:53 to any ideas or proposals to completely and definitely
02:57 stop the aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip.
03:00 Our people do not want a temporary cessation
03:02 but rather a complete cessation of the aggression.
03:05 And here we also affirm that the management of the Palestinian
03:08 issue is an internal Palestinian national decision.
03:11 It is the decision of the Palestinian people alone,
03:13 and our people will not accept leadership
03:15 that comes to them on the back of a Zionist or a US tank
03:18 or with the protection of this tank.
03:20 The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
03:22 will contour the arch Israel on Thursday
03:24 to end extrajudicial killings and third violence
03:28 against the Palestinian population.
03:29 The United Nations Agency warned of rapid deterioration
03:34 of the human rights situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem
03:37 since October 7 and called for an immediate end
03:39 to use of weapons and military men during security operations
03:43 through arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment of Palestinians
03:47 and the removal of discriminatory movements
03:49 restrictions.
03:50 In Lebanon, the Hezbollah resistance groups
03:58 warned that it is ready to respond militarily
04:01 to any aggressions by the occupying army.
04:03 The border area between southern Lebanon and Israel
04:06 has intensified tensions in recent days
04:08 as parties exchanged fire with losses on both sides.
04:12 In this sense, the leader of the military group,
04:14 Naim Kassam, points out that they
04:17 are ready to take the necessary actions in the face
04:19 of the genocide triggered in the Gaza Strip.
04:22 If Israel goes too far, we will retaliate twice.
04:32 We will not be afraid of any Israeli or US threats
04:37 or intimidation because the future of the region
04:39 now depends on this hope and this sacrifice.
04:46 Arabs and Israelis rally in Tel Aviv on Thursday
04:49 for a ceasefire in Gaza as Israeli forces heavily
04:52 bomb the beside Gaza Strip.
04:54 Israelis, Palestinians, Muslims, Jews, and Christians,
05:00 this is everybody's hope.
05:02 The only solution is to recognize
05:04 that both peoples are entitled to life, freedom,
05:11 sovereignty, and dignity, no matter their religion
05:17 and background.
05:18 Everybody needs-- these are basic human rights
05:23 that have been withdrawn from millions of people
05:29 for 56 years.
05:32 So there is, of course, the atrocities committed by Hamas
05:37 on October 7th will never be pardoned, excuse me,
05:41 never can, period.
05:44 No forgiveness.
05:45 But if you don't see the historical context,
05:50 then you're condemned to repeat the same tragedy over and over
05:59 again.
06:03 This protest is about Arab people and Jewish people
06:09 standing together.
06:12 And we live here together in this country.
06:15 And I believe that we have to live here together.
06:19 And I do believe that we can live peacefully together.
06:23 And I am for peace and for the two-state solution, which
06:30 our prime minister doesn't want even to talk about.
06:34 And now we have even--
06:39 how should I say--
06:41 a more important goal, which is to bring back our hostages.
06:49 These are Israeli civilians who are held by people of Hamas.
06:57 And our government is responsible for our citizens.
07:03 Also in the United States, demonstrators
07:12 march on the streets of New York City,
07:14 demanding an ceasefire in Gaza.
07:16 Protesters march through the streets of New York on Thursday,
07:19 demanding an ceasefire in Gaza.
07:20 Following Wednesday march, where the pro-Palestinian
07:23 protesters briefly blocked entrance roads
07:26 to airports in New York and Los Angeles.
07:28 So far this month in New York, pro-Palestinian organizers
07:31 have responded to the grueling death toll in Gaza
07:34 with this leading action.
07:35 Same in some of the city's best known events,
07:38 including the Men's Instance Giving Day parade,
07:41 the annual Trill Aidan Sremani at the Rockefeller Center.
07:44 Let's take a very short break.

07:57 Welcome back to "From the South."
08:11 In Venezuela, diplomat Alex Abt denounced
08:13 a torture and cruel treatment received
08:16 during his kidnapping in Cape Verde,
08:18 an illegal incursion in the United States.
08:22 In an exclusive interview given in the third edition
08:24 of Maduro's podcast, the diplomat
08:26 said that during his kidnapping, the US government imposed
08:29 ill-natural coercive measures against Venezuela
08:31 and the Palatinate's economy in order to get nations collapsed.
08:35 Saab also reported during his abduction
08:38 he had to drink water in the same containers
08:41 where he had to perform his physiological needs.
08:44 In his exclusive interview, the Venezuelan diplomat
08:51 referred to the sanctions he and his family
08:54 had been subjected to by the US government
08:58 and how he was tortured for two hours for refusing
09:02 to sign a voluntary extradition from Cape Verde to the US.
09:08 In July 2019, I was sanctioned.
09:10 My sons, my brothers also were sanctioned,
09:14 who didn't even have any link to the government of Venezuela.
09:22 The sanctions, they were sanctions
09:25 because they were relatives of mine.
09:28 Since 2019, I was sanctioned for working
09:34 in the system of food, the food system of Venezuela.
09:39 That first night, I was put in Yale.
09:50 No one spoke to me.
09:53 The next day and night, I had no food, no water.
09:59 At midnight, they started to talk to me,
10:03 and they urged me to sign my voluntary extradition
10:10 to the United States.
10:12 I refused.
10:13 Then the control is--
10:18 they handcuffed me and seat me in a chair.
10:23 They put out a towel.
10:26 They put a towel on my face and start filling my face with
10:33 water, so I had the sensation of drowning.
10:39 They tortured me for over two hours.
10:46 Alex shared his experience in prison
10:49 and admitted that he gets emotional when he
10:51 remembers about those moments.
10:55 On November 16, a guard came to me and said, Alex,
11:04 there are a group of people from human rights
11:07 are going to come here with the director of the prison, Yale.
11:13 You need to Yale that you are being subjected to torture.
11:20 So when I heard that they were coming up, I started to Yale.
11:23 Well, they kept walking.
11:30 They didn't listen to me.
11:34 I still get very emotional when speaking about this.
11:39 10 minutes later, they came back.
11:42 They opened the door and say, Alex, we are here for you.
11:51 They verified that I was tortured.
12:00 They say, this is not going to happen again.
12:05 They fired the director Correa from the prison.
12:09 Camila Fabri, wife of diplomat Alex Sapa,
12:16 recounts how the Venezuelan people were a great support
12:19 for her in the midst of the nightmare
12:21 that this Fabri family was living.
12:24 This has been the victory of the diplomacy of peace.
12:34 This has been a historical victory.
12:37 And they are in pain because they
12:41 spent millions of dollars in this media war
12:46 and this demonization of Alex and Venezuela.
12:53 We are more than decided to defend the truth of Venezuela
12:58 because there are a lot of lies to justify
13:03 policies against Venezuela.
13:06 We need to fight because these people deserve to be respected
13:11 and deserve to be defended.
13:15 This is a loving people that they have given me a lot.
13:20 And in Argentina, the General Confederation of Workers
13:26 called for national stride with a march to the Congress
13:29 to be held on January 24, rejection
13:31 of the decree of necessity and urgency
13:33 by the government of Javier Millet.
13:35 The Central Committee of the CGT called this a thoracic
13:40 for protest activities against the labor
13:42 from and that that should be promoted by decree
13:46 and will send to the Congress for the first month
13:49 of the next 2024.
13:51 In addition, it announced for the next January
13:54 to attend a plenary meeting of regional delegations
13:58 at headquarters of Azopardo.
14:06 In Uruguay, citizens took to the streets
14:08 to demand public safety in the city of Durazno
14:10 in the center of the country and in spite of violence
14:14 nationwide.
14:15 According to the authorities, at least 10,000 citizens
14:18 took part in the demonstration that
14:21 moved to the courthouse of the department of the same name.
14:25 The town has been marred by several violent acts
14:27 and mostly attributed to clashes between criminal gangs
14:30 in recent months.
14:31 Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
14:39 vetoed some articles of the bill that
14:41 allowed the use of pesticides in agriculture.
14:44 The head of state also blocked the reuse of pesticide
14:46 containers and made the dissemination of information
14:51 of health risks in products more flexible.
14:55 They did not affect a bill which was sanctioned
14:57 by the Brazilian Congress in November
14:59 that loosened the laws that regulate the use of pesticides
15:02 in the country.

15:21 We'll have a short break.
15:22 Don't go away.
15:22 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:26 Welcome back.
15:36 African governments are expanding protected areas
15:39 by grabbing the pasture and the farmland from small farmers.
15:43 They're opening the way for large investors
15:46 to expand conservation with the expectation of carbon
15:50 and biodiversity credits following a failure
15:53 to agree on international public finance for climate change.
15:58 The government has taken their land
16:00 to expand the conservation of a national park.
16:03 They have taken a seven-acre field from me.
16:05 They have decided that this place
16:06 will be used for conservation.
16:08 Fortunately or unfortunately, they
16:10 have already demarcated the new boundaries.
16:13 Government, please look at us with pity.
16:17 We are your citizens.
16:19 Where are we going now?
16:20 We have no peace.
16:22 Tanapa is attacking us, and the elephants are attacking us.
16:25 Tanapa has appropriated about 500 acres of farmland.
16:29 Our village chiefs are only concerned
16:31 with the district proceedings.
16:33 They say nothing.
16:35 They have said that we can plant for the last time,
16:37 that we will not cultivate there anymore.
16:40 Value animals more than people.
16:41 Where are we going?
16:42 The Barra de Huelalla on one side
16:47 is the Panguipenguera Game Reserve,
16:49 and on the other, a few kilometers away,
16:51 lie the confines of the Ruaja National Park.
16:53 The Maasi and Sukuma pastoralists
16:59 have been surviving without access to pasture for years.
17:02 But now the government wants to evict the people.
17:06 For example, from Uguavira, whose houses and rice fields
17:09 have been left inside the new poles erected
17:11 by the National Parks Authority, Tanapa.
17:13 Tanapa.
17:14 The late President John Magufuli had
17:19 succeeded in preventing conservation development
17:22 from destroying villages.
17:23 But in late 2022, the government announced
17:26 that five villages in Barali and more than 47 hamlets
17:30 must disappear to protect Ruaja's wildlife.
17:32 It is a gigantic area.
17:37 Hospital buildings, schools, mosques, churches.
17:42 The government comes and says they have to leave.
17:46 These are people who have been there for more than 40 years.
17:49 And well, these people were not informed or consulted
17:53 in this decision making.
17:57 More than 800 United Farmers have challenged the government's
18:00 decision in court.
18:02 Although so far, it has only bought time
18:04 to plant the last rice crops in 2024.
18:07 We do not have any strength.
18:09 We are united, but we are only waiting for the procedure
18:11 to be established by the government.
18:13 But we have no other choice but to accept to leave.
18:15 We are united, but we are just waiting for the procedure
