00:03 - All right, gentlemen, I went over the rules
00:04 early in the dressing room.
00:05 I want you to obey my commands,
00:07 touch shelves all times, play Olympia.
00:09 Buenos suertes. Good luck to both of y'all.
00:11 - Luis Alberto Lopez, 11 consecutive wins,
00:15 eight by stoppage since he lost to Ruben Villa,
00:17 who we saw earlier on tonight,
00:19 put on a spectacular performance in May of 2019.
00:23 He said, "That night,
00:25 I realized I was doing everything wrong."
00:28 Since then, he's changed his attitude, his mentality,
00:31 and tonight, he steps into the ring for the second time
00:34 as a world champion to defend his belt
00:36 against Joette Gonzalez,
00:38 a man intent on making his dream
00:40 and his family's dream of becoming a champion
00:43 come true this evening.
00:45 - So what you're gonna see tonight is conventional fighters.
00:47 They use their skill to maintain
00:49 their most favorable attributes.
00:51 For Jouette Gonzalez, that's gonna be
00:53 controlling distance outside at times,
00:56 but it's more of a volume effect.
00:58 He likes to let his hands go.
00:59 He uses the high guard,
01:01 and he likes to punch off of that high guard.
01:03 - Suba. Box.
01:05 - First warning from referee Lawrence Cole for a low blow.
01:09 - Whereas you have the unconventional fighter.
01:12 He uses instincts.
01:13 He uses unorthodox rhythms and techniques
01:17 to offset conventional boxing mechanics.
01:23 - The Cha family out there in Mexicali
01:26 sponsoring Luis Alberto Lopez,
01:29 the Leakeys, pharma season.
01:32 He's coming in, taking a jab from Gonzalez,
01:35 who has a 3 1/2-inch advantage in reach,
01:38 a 2-inch advantage in height,
01:40 but he fights down to his level sometimes.
01:42 - But you see that unconventional ways I'm talking about.
01:44 He's rushing in with shots, chin exposed,
01:47 coming around the guard, underneath the guard.
01:51 - But somebody's got to make him pay, right?
01:53 - Yeah. - Jowett does with that right hand.
01:56 - That's the shot that's open for Jowett.
01:59 It's the right hand.
02:00 Beautiful right hand, and the jab as well,
02:02 because you can isolate.
02:05 You can isolate Lopez on the outside with your jab.
02:11 Remember, he's a shorter fighter,
02:12 and he has a shorter reach as well, so.
02:16 - He leaps in, trying to set up that body work
02:19 and those uppercuts.
02:20 Jowett, though, comes firing out of that corner,
02:23 and now he takes and dictates the pace.
02:28 - And see, and that's what I want to see
02:29 from Jowett right there.
02:30 Jowett already recognizing that
02:32 Lopez doesn't like to fight off his back foot,
02:34 and that's why he's putting that pressure on him.
02:37 He's trying to return the favor, answer that call.
02:40 He's here to win this championship tonight.
02:43 - That was a short right uppercut from Lopez,
02:46 and those are the dangerous shots
02:47 that you don't even see coming.
02:50 - And Jowett, he's got a lot of power.
02:52 He's got a lot of power.
02:54 - See, Lopez right there changing levels.
02:56 He's going to explode with something.
02:58 There it is right there.
02:59 You see that loop in the right hand?
03:01 That's his favorite combination.
03:02 That's how he closes the distance.
03:05 He throws power. He gets you to bag out,
03:07 and then that jab tries to split the guard right there.
03:10 - Ooh, that was an uppercut that barely missed.
03:16 Good defensive work for Gonzalez,
03:18 and that goes to the body with the right hand.
03:22 You can feel the tension between the unorthodox fighter

04:29 for the love of La Liga.
04:31 - On November 16th, we're gonna see Shakur Stevenson
04:34 defend his title against Edwin De Los Santos,
04:36 and as I was watching video of De Los Santos,
04:39 he put on a clinic on how to defeat the high guard
04:42 against Joseph Adorno.
04:44 How do you anticipate that Lopez can do that
04:47 against Gonzalez tonight, Tim?
04:48 - Well, he has all the punches to defeat a high guard.
04:51 An uppercut, you can come underneath it,
04:52 you can come around it, you know.
04:54 There's little holes around a tight high guard.
04:57 The guard that Gonzalez used,
04:59 see how he's coming around the elbows,
05:01 going down to the body,
05:02 and eventually he will catch him in between with those shots.
05:05 - And Shakur's a two-division champion.
05:07 He'll be fighting for the vacant title,
05:09 the interim belt,
05:11 against Edwin De Los Santos
05:13 on Formula One weekend in Vegas.
05:16 A card that will be a two-championship title card
05:19 with Emmanuel Navarrete defending his 130-pound title,
05:23 which once belonged to Shakur Stevenson,
05:25 against 2016 Olympic gold medalist Robson Conceicao.
05:31 Nice combination there from Lopez.
05:33 You like my pronunciation?
05:34 - Yeah, I love your pronunciation,
05:36 but I also like that hook that Lopez just threw.
05:38 - Stop! Pick him up, all right?
05:40 That was off the set.
05:42 - Now it's a warning for Gonzalez
05:45 for punching on the hip.
05:47 You see the way Lopez attempts to evade punches,
05:51 and then he digs to the body.
05:52 Another questionable blow downstairs from Jowett.
05:57 Flurries from Lopez.
05:59 - Jowett's doing a good job right here.
06:01 This is where he wants Lopez.
06:03 He doesn't want Lopez moving around and using his legs.
06:06 He wants to pinch up against those ropes,
06:07 and he wants to be up teeing off on him.
06:10 You take Lopez's legs away from him,
06:15 then he has to depend on something else.
06:18 But you see Lopez trying to split that guard
06:19 with the uppercut.
06:20 That's the shot that he's gonna be looking for tonight.
06:23 - IBF featherweight world title on the line,
06:29 and Jowett Gonzalez challenging for the third time
06:31 at 126 pounds.
06:33 Lands a very nice overhand right from the outside,
06:35 and he does it again.
06:37 - That right hand is the money punch for Jowett tonight.
06:41 That jab is coming back low.
06:44 [crowd cheering]
06:47 - He's got Lopez moving backward,
06:54 and this is an excellent start for Jowett Gonzalez
06:56 in terms of dictating the pace.
06:58 - Dictating the pace,
06:59 but he needs to keep landing something effective.
07:01 That was a vicious body shot right there from him.
07:03 - He's keeping Lopez from finding his rhythm.
07:08 Nice combination, though.
07:11 Left and right from Lopez.
07:13 That's where he becomes dangerous.
07:15 - But I like the sense of urgency
07:23 from Gonzalez so far in this fight.
07:26 I like the fact that he's fighting.
07:28 He's fighting back.

08:44 The champion, Luis Alberto Lopez,
08:46 off to a slow start against Joe Ed Gonzalez,
08:49 who usually takes his time, Tim,
08:51 but there's an adjustment from early on

08:59 in the fighter meetings.
09:00 You know, he's just a very composed, you know, person.
09:03 You know, and I didn't feel it in the fighter meeting.

09:15 And he says, "I have to fight that way,"
09:17 as Lopez lands a nice right hand,

09:27 you see the defense coming from Gonzalez,
09:30 but what you need to see is you need to see the counters,
09:33 the counters in between those shots.
09:35 That's important for the judges.
09:38 - What Joe can not do is allow Lopez to out-jab him tonight.
09:49 That's one battle he cannot lose.
09:51 - Look, Lopez is in his zone right now.
09:53 You see how he's rolling shots,
09:55 he's twisting and turning, he's avoiding punches,
09:57 and then he'll squat down, he'll come up with uppercuts.
10:00 That's what I'm talking about.
10:01 Very unconventional.
10:03 Very hard to train for a fighter like this.
10:06 - There's a nice looping--
10:07 like a catch-and-shoot, right?
10:08 - Yeah, the shoulder roll right there.
10:10 Looking for a punch, but that's what's confusing
10:12 and has right now Gonzalez puzzled.
10:17 - And we talked about adjustments,
10:20 and that's a great adjustment from Lopez,
10:22 that first leaping left hook
10:24 that lands clean on Joette Gonzalez.
10:27 - And you see the experience right here.
10:30 Lopez is trying to get up against the ropes,
10:32 but he's tying up one arm.
10:34 And allowing the referee to do his work
10:38 so he can get right back in the center of the ring.
10:40 - That's a stick from Jowette,
10:42 but he pays catching a left hook
10:44 as then he lands a shot of his own.
10:46 It's that give-and-take here in round three.
10:49 - Good jab.
10:56 - Ooh.

21:04 so far in this fight, Tim, has been the right hand.
21:08 - Yes, you have Lopez right there with the single high guard.
21:11 He has the right hand up, but that lead hand is down.
21:14 But you see Lopez taking a little bit of steam
21:16 off that right hand by rolling it.
21:19 You know, that's a veteran move right there,
21:21 but let me tell you, that was an effective punch,
21:23 but at the same time, the judges that were watching the round,
21:26 they thought it was probably effective as well,
21:28 and they scored that punch for Joette Gonzalez.
21:30 - Lopez landing at a 25% clip of his total punches
21:33 through five rounds.
21:34 That's 3% better than Joette Gonzalez.
21:39 - Again, you see, when you're being forced back like that,
21:42 that's effective aggression.
21:44 You're letting your hands go, and then where is--
21:47 where is Gonzalez going?
21:49 He's going backwards, and he's not throwing any punches.
21:51 You have to be able to counter those shots
21:53 coming from Lopez.
21:55 - And the difference was, Gonzalez was pushing Lopez back,
21:58 but they were uppercuts, and there's that right hand
22:00 in the combination. - Oh, there it is.
22:02 That's the right hand. Right hand is open for him.
22:06 - Can he duplicate that success, though?
22:10 Ooh, he missed with that right, and he almost got clipped
22:12 by a right uppercut from Lopez.
22:15 That's the risk-reward that Gonzalez is haggling
22:19 within his mind right now.
22:22 - He has to take those risks.
22:24 That right hand--that right hand is extremely important
22:26 in this fight.
22:28 I mean, if they watched the film like I did,
22:30 that right hand, I saw the right hand,
22:32 and the left hook is open, but I haven't seen too many
22:34 left hooks coming from Gonzalez.
22:36 There's another right hand. - There's a straight right.
22:38 - Yes, yes. It's a good round right now.
22:41 Very efficient round for Gonzalez.
22:44 - Now he uses his jab.
22:47 The punch variety, I think, has been the biggest difference
22:49 in this sixth round for Gonzalez.
22:51 He's not predictable.
22:53 - Yeah, he's dropping down, dropping a stab jab
22:55 downstairs, and then he's coming with the right hand
22:58 over the top, so he's taking the attention
23:01 from Lopez downstairs to be able to land up top.
23:06 - Ooh, counter-leap from Lopez. - I heard him with that.
23:08 Did you see his eyes? - I saw his legs and his eyes.
23:10 - His eyes rolled back in his head.
23:12 - Look at the inside work. Short, chopping shots.
23:19 But every time Lopez throws a punch,
23:21 look at his opposite hand. It's down.
23:24 I'm telling you, he makes a ton of mistakes,
23:26 but it works for him. He hits too hard,
23:28 and you have to respect it.
23:30 Guys don't want to take chances because he hits that hard.
