Moritz Rode's Fatal Crash @ Bremerhaven 2013

The 56th running of the Internationale Fischereihafen Rennen in Bremerhaven, was marred by the death of 21-year-old German rider Moritz Rode from Westerau, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

The Fischereihafen Rennen in Bremerhaven is one of the last road races in Germany. More than 400 riders took part in the 2013 edition of the event, organized in Bremerhaven, a city at the seaport of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Germany, since 1952, on a 2,670-kilometer street course at the same location near the harbor, using the same finishing straight of the first edition.

The accident happened around 15h00 on Whit Monday, 20 May 2013, during the 2nd race of the "Klasse drei" for Supersport 600 cm3 machines. Moritz Rode lost control of his 2003 Yamaha YZF-R6 #8 on the approach to the chicane, and crashed. The impact was so hard that the rider died shortly afterwards.

Moritz Rode, who finished 22nd in the first "Klasse drei" race of the meeting, was reported to be the first fatality in the 56 year history of the race. After the tragedy, the race was immediately stopped and the remainder of the races were cancelled.
