Doriano Romboni's Fatal Crash @ Circuito Internazionale di Latina 2013

The experienced Italian motorcycling champion Doriano Romboni, 44, lost his life after being struck by another rider's bike at the "SIC Supermoto Day 2013".

Not related to any specific series, this was the second edition of the supermotard charity event, held at the Circuito Internazionale Il Sagittario in Latina, Italy, in memory of Marco Simoncelli, nicknamed "Sic", who was killed during the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang on 23 October 2011. Marco's father Paolo Simoncelli and many well known riders, including Andrea Dovizioso, who won the race in 2012, Troy Corser, Romano Fenati, Thomas Chareyre, Michel Fabrizio, Eugene Laverty and former World Champion Max Biaggi, attended the event.

Doriano Romboni was traveling at relatively slow speeds during the second practice session, around 14h00 on Saturday, 30 November 2013. On the approach to 5th turn, he lost control of his bike which ran onto the grass at a point where two lines of the track run parallel in opposite directions, separated by a few meters run-off area. Still clung on to his skidding bike, Romboni swerved back onto the other stretch of the track and into the path of fellow rider Gianluca Vizziello, 33, from Policoro, former Italian Supersport Champion in 2010, who could do nothing to avoid hitting him.

The session was immediately stopped and Romboni was given immediate cardiac massage by first-aid personnel at the track. Minutes later he was flown by helicopter to Santa Maria Goretti hospital in the town of Latina. Having suffered skull and chest injuries, his condition was deemed critical. Less than three hours after the incident, doctors announced Doriano Romboni's death.

Ironically, the circumstances of Doriano Romboni's demise are very similar to Simoncelli's accident.

After the tragedy, although the competitors asked the organizers not to stop the races, in respect to their fallen comrade, with all proceeds going to Romboni family, the FIM-Federazione Italiana Motociclismo annulled the event. The following day Doriano Romboni received a fitting tribute, the main grandstands of the Circuito Internazionale Il Sagittario were jammed with people, and the riders completed a lap before stopping their bikes near the finish line for a minute of silence in his remembrance.
