00:00:03 [APPLAUSE]
00:00:19 Jen, quit your harping.
00:00:28 Hi, everybody.
00:00:30 Hi.
00:00:30 No, it's just not that Christmas enthusiasm
00:00:37 that I expected.
00:00:38 So hold on.
00:00:38 She said, hi, everybody.
00:00:40 Hi.
00:00:43 I got a hernia.
00:00:43 Wow.
00:00:45 Oh, that was terrific.
00:00:47 Welcome.
00:00:47 And this is the 10th year, I believe.
00:00:50 Oh, my god.
00:00:51 Can you believe it?
00:00:52 And look it.
00:00:52 This is the biggest crowd so far.
00:00:54 I'm a little nervous because it started a little bit small.
00:00:58 But look at this.
00:00:58 This is our biggest crowd.
00:01:00 Yes.
00:01:01 Merry Christmas, everyone.
00:01:02 Happy holidays.
00:01:03 I hope you've had a really fantastic year.
00:01:06 Pat, how have you been?
00:01:08 Well, no, it's terrific because they
00:01:10 don't charge me to get in.
00:01:13 And so I'm thrilled.
00:01:14 All I can tell you--
00:01:15 In fact, they pay you to get out.
00:01:16 No, but we've had a couple of real veterans for this show
00:01:22 because you've been doing it for a few years.
00:01:24 I've been doing it for a few more.
00:01:26 And Maury Hulley has been producing this for ages
00:01:31 and ages and ages from the beginning.
00:01:34 And I believe that the star of our show, Mike Chamberlain,
00:01:39 has been here for the entire 10 years for the best
00:01:43 of all possible reasons because the name of it
00:01:46 is Mike Chamberlain and Friends.
00:01:49 It would be kind of stupid to show up 10 years from now
00:01:52 and not have a Mike Chamberlain.
00:01:54 You are so smart.
00:01:56 Yeah.
00:01:57 So Jan, tell me about--
00:02:01 You?
00:02:03 Obviously not rehearsed any more than we ever do rehearse.
00:02:06 We never do.
00:02:07 But I want to know what Christmas
00:02:09 is like in the Deandre House.
00:02:13 Merry Christmas.
00:02:14 Really good.
00:02:15 OK, so--
00:02:16 No, wait.
00:02:16 Wait a minute.
00:02:18 The danger of kissing an unexpected kiss coming
00:02:25 to an Irish Catholic, do you know how easily excited we are?
00:02:30 [LAUGHTER]
00:02:32 You are so easy.
00:02:34 No, but--
00:02:34 I mean, that was nothing.
00:02:36 But anyway, so here we are.
00:02:39 We're emceeing this.
00:02:40 And I'm Pat McMahon, by the way, and have been in the Valley
00:02:45 since Camelback Mountain was a hump.
00:02:49 And a lot of radio and television.
00:02:52 And I appreciate those of you who
00:02:54 didn't turn to another channel when you saw that it was me.
00:02:59 All I can tell you is that I have
00:03:00 had the most marvelous time visiting with folks who watch
00:03:05 and who listen.
00:03:06 And sometimes you just say, aren't you Murray Fenster
00:03:13 or something like that?
00:03:14 By the way, a while back, somebody came up to me
00:03:19 and said, I know you.
00:03:22 You're-- I know you.
00:03:26 You're-- and I went, Chandi, Audrey.
00:03:28 He goes, no, that's not it.
00:03:31 But Pat, you were asking how my family is.
00:03:34 And I looked down at my black skirt.
00:03:37 Why do I wear a black skirt when I have
00:03:39 33 rescue animals at home?
00:03:42 Because I know there's going to be goat hair, cat hair,
00:03:47 horse poop, something on me.
00:03:49 But anyway, everybody's doing fine.
00:03:51 And my mama, who couldn't be here tonight, is 96 years old.
00:03:57 And she is amazing.
00:03:59 Amazing.
00:03:59 So she-- let me back up for a second
00:04:03 and tell you that I retired two years ago.
00:04:05 That retirement lasted one month.
00:04:08 I'm now working 70 hours a week teaching cooking classes
00:04:11 at Sweet Basil.
00:04:12 And mama's in the kitchen with me.
00:04:14 She rolls up her sleeves and she goes,
00:04:16 that's not how you make the pasta.
00:04:19 You watch me.
00:04:19 I make the pasta the right way.
00:04:21 So--
00:04:22 Anyway, all I can tell you is that I am delighted
00:04:25 to be here because of you.
00:04:27 I'm delighted to be here because we're celebrating
00:04:30 this holiday together.
00:04:32 Christians and Jews and people from Baha'i,
00:04:35 Christmas belongs to everybody.
00:04:37 I hope you feel that way.
00:04:38 And I'm also delighted to be here
00:04:41 with one of the most versatile people I know in the business.
00:04:44 She's a musician.
00:04:45 She's a singer.
00:04:47 She's a zoo owner.
00:04:48 The zoo happens to be at her house.
00:04:51 And that is no reference to your husband.
00:04:53 That's all of the animals that you have
00:04:57 that you'll be talking about a little bit later on.
00:05:00 But--
00:05:00 Much later.
00:05:01 Jan D'Autre.
00:05:02 Hey, you know who else we got to get on here?
00:05:05 The guy we were talking about before.
00:05:07 Without whom we would say blank and friends every Christmas.
00:05:13 No.
00:05:13 Mike Chamberlain and friends.
00:05:15 You are his friends.
00:05:18 We are his friends.
00:05:20 And so here's Mike Chamberlain.
00:05:22 [APPLAUSE]
00:05:24 Woo-hoo!
00:05:24 [APPLAUSE]
00:05:26 Look at you guys.
00:05:30 Could I be any more center stage?
00:05:37 Hey, Jan and Pat.
00:05:43 When I was doing television here in Phoenix,
00:05:47 I was at a restaurant one night.
00:05:50 And a nice couple came up and said,
00:05:52 you're Mike Chamberlain from Channel 3, aren't you?
00:05:54 And I said, I am.
00:05:56 And she said, you know, you look a lot thinner in person.
00:06:00 I said, you know, the camera adds 10 pounds.
00:06:06 And she goes, how many cameras are they using?
00:06:11 See that Christmas tree up there?
00:06:13 Here we go.
00:06:20 Rocking around the Christmas tree at the Christmas party
00:06:24 hop.
00:06:25 Oh, look in the back.
00:06:26 There's a tree coming.
00:06:27 Rocking around the Christmas tree at the Christmas party
00:06:36 hop.
00:06:38 Mistletoe hung where you can see every couple tries to stop.
00:06:45 Rocking around the Christmas tree at the Christmas party
00:06:49 hop.
00:06:51 Later we'll have some pumpkin pie and we'll do some caroling.
00:06:57 You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear voices
00:07:05 singing, let's be jolly.
00:07:08 The halls with boughs of holly are rocking around the Christmas
00:07:13 tree.
00:07:13 Have a happy holiday.
00:07:17 Everyone dancing merrily in the new old fashioned way.
00:07:23 You will get a sentimental feeling
00:07:28 when you hear voices singing, let's be jolly.
00:07:34 The halls with boughs of holly are rocking around
00:07:38 the Christmas tree.
00:07:40 Have a happy holiday.
00:07:43 Everyone dancing merrily in the new old fashioned way.
00:07:50 [HUMMING]
00:07:56 [APPLAUSE]
00:08:02 Thank you.
00:08:03 Thank you so much.
00:08:04 10 years.
00:08:05 This is our 10 year anniversary for this holiday spectacular.
00:08:10 I just got back from New York City
00:08:12 and saw the Rockette show for the very first time.
00:08:14 Oh my God.
00:08:15 It's a visual overload.
00:08:18 I mean, I don't know what they use every inch of the theater.
00:08:21 The ceilings, the walls, the stairs, I mean,
00:08:23 they're everywhere.
00:08:24 So I'm going to do a white Christmas
00:08:30 trilogy for you tonight.
00:08:33 And the first thing we're going to do
00:08:35 is you and I are going to sing "White Christmas."
00:08:39 It's my favorite Christmas song of all time.
00:08:41 It is-- I mean, just Irving Berlin wrote it.
00:08:44 He handed it to Bing Crosby in 1942, and the rest is history.
00:08:50 I think I've told you before, do you
00:08:51 know that the song "White Christmas" did not
00:08:55 come from the movie "White Christmas."
00:08:57 Did you know that?
00:08:59 It came from an old black and white movie
00:09:01 called "Holiday Inn" with Fred Astaire.
00:09:05 Well, anyway, we're going to start with "White Christmas."
00:09:08 We're going to do a couple of other songs
00:09:10 that were kind of hidden in the movie "White Christmas."
00:09:13 But I sure hope you'll help me sing this one.
00:09:15 I love-- can I see it?
00:09:17 I've done this before.
00:09:18 Can I see a show of hands?
00:09:19 How many in this room have lived in the snow?
00:09:22 Oh my God.
00:09:25 Look at us.
00:09:25 I know.
00:09:26 I was raised outside Chicago, Illinois.
00:09:29 And when I was 10, my dad came home from work,
00:09:33 started shoveling the driveway for the umpteenth time.
00:09:36 And he had just about had it.
00:09:38 And he called a family meeting, my two brothers and my mom.
00:09:41 And he said, family, we're moving to California
00:09:45 because they don't shovel sunshine.
00:09:49 And that's how we ended up out west.
00:09:52 I'll use the "raise your hands, think back
00:09:54 to a childhood memory."
00:09:55 Snow is magical to a child.
00:09:57 To an adult, it's a pain in the ass.
00:09:59 I can't-- I can't get to it.
00:10:01 I'm dreaming of a white Christmas,
00:10:10 just like the ones I used to know,
00:10:16 where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear
00:10:26 sleigh bells in the snow.
00:10:29 So pretty.
00:10:32 I'm dreaming of a white Christmas,
00:10:40 with every Christmas card I write.
00:10:46 May your days be merry and bright.
00:10:54 And may all your Christmases be white.
00:10:59 Will you join me?
00:11:00 I'm going to guide you through it.
00:11:01 Here we go.
00:11:01 Sing it.
00:11:02 I'm dreaming of a white Christmas,
00:11:08 just like the ones, just like the ones I used to know,
00:11:14 where the treetops glisten, where the treetops glisten
00:11:20 and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow.
00:11:29 Keep going.
00:11:32 I'm dreaming of a white--
00:11:38 with every Christmas card.
00:11:40 With every Christmas card I write.
00:11:46 May your days be merry and bright.
00:11:51 And may all your Christmases be white.
00:12:03 [APPLAUSE]
00:12:12 Thank you.
00:12:16 I applaud you.
00:12:17 So in the movie White Christmas, there
00:12:20 is a wonderful movie scene where Danny Kay and Vera Ellen
00:12:27 went out on the balcony.
00:12:29 And they performed a beautiful dance to this song.
00:12:34 And the song is just exquisite.
00:12:36 It's just a wonderfully written song by Irving Berlin.
00:12:40 But if anybody ever feels like dancing
00:12:44 in the middle of this one, you're more than welcome.
00:12:47 From White Christmas.
00:12:49 The best things happen while you're dancing.
00:12:55 Things that you could not do at home
00:12:57 come naturally on the floor.
00:13:02 For dancing soon becomes romancing
00:13:08 when you hold a girl in your arms
00:13:10 that you've never held before.
00:13:12 Even guys with two left feet turn out
00:13:19 OK if the girl is sweet.
00:13:22 And if by chance their cheeks should meet while dancing,
00:13:27 proving that the best things happen while you dance.
00:13:34 The best things happen while you're dancing.
00:13:40 Things that you could not do at home
00:13:43 come naturally on the floor.
00:13:47 For dancing soon becomes romancing
00:13:53 when you hold a girl in your arms
00:13:56 that you've never held before.
00:14:01 Even guys with two left feet turn out
00:14:04 OK if the girl is sweet.
00:14:07 And if by chance their lips should meet while dancing,
00:14:12 proving that the best things happen while you dance.
00:14:19 Proving that the best things happen while you dance.
00:14:24 [APPLAUSE]
00:14:30 [INAUDIBLE]
00:14:36 Maury and Wendy Haley, thank you guys for doing that.
00:14:39 I really had to twist his arm big time.
00:14:42 So the third song from White Christmas,
00:14:48 I should tell you that Vera Ellen, who
00:14:49 danced that dance to the song I just sang,
00:14:53 holds a record in Hollywood even to this day.
00:14:56 Vera Ellen has the smallest waist in Hollywood history.
00:15:04 She has a 14 inch waist, or the size of one of my thighs.
00:15:12 She really did.
00:15:13 So this next in the trilogy of songs from White Christmas,
00:15:17 Bing Crosby couldn't sleep and Rosemary Clooney
00:15:20 couldn't sleep either.
00:15:21 And they ended up in the lodges kind of dining room together.
00:15:26 And they were all kind of down and out and everything.
00:15:28 And Bing Crosby was trying to lift her spirits.
00:15:32 And he did it, of course, in song.
00:15:35 Fred Astaire did all the dancing.
00:15:37 Bing Crosby did all the singing, of course.
00:15:40 So anyway, he sang this song to Rosemary Clooney
00:15:45 to cheer her up.
00:15:48 When you're worried and you can't sleep,
00:15:52 count your blessings instead of sheep and you'll--
00:15:57 I don't like that key.
00:15:58 Hang on.
00:15:58 When you're worried and you can't sleep,
00:16:05 just count your blessings instead of sheep
00:16:09 and you'll fall asleep counting your blessings.
00:16:17 When my bankroll is getting small,
00:16:20 I think of when I had none at all.
00:16:24 And I fall asleep counting my blessings.
00:16:28 Really, the moral of this story is tonight when you leave
00:16:34 and you go home and you put your head on the pillow,
00:16:38 get rid of all those negative thoughts.
00:16:40 Just throw them away.
00:16:43 Think good things.
00:16:43 Think happy thoughts.
00:16:44 Go to your happy place, whatever it takes.
00:16:47 So as you go to sleep tonight, I hope
00:16:49 that you're counting your blessings.
00:16:51 That's all I can ask of you.
00:16:53 When you're worried and you can't sleep,
00:16:56 just count your blessings instead of sheep
00:17:00 and you'll fall asleep counting your blessings.
00:17:08 When your bankroll is getting low,
00:17:11 just think of when you had none at all
00:17:15 and you'll fall asleep counting your blessings.
00:17:21 Well, I've never done this, but Hanukkah started yesterday.
00:17:39 I'm not Jewish, but Hanukkah started yesterday.
00:17:43 And I often overlook Hanukkah in my concerts, but not anymore.
00:17:47 There's a song-- well, actually, I was watching a PBS special
00:17:54 on Hanukkah.
00:17:55 And in that documentary, they did this song.
00:17:59 And I fell in love with it.
00:18:00 I think it's so darn cute.
00:18:02 But anyway, it's called the Dreidel Song.
00:18:04 And a dreidel is a little spin toy
00:18:07 that Jewish children play with.
00:18:09 I'm not sure if it's just at Hanukkah or year round.
00:18:12 But anyway, you can make a dreidel out
00:18:15 of just about anything, as I'll prove to you in this song.
00:18:18 OK.
00:18:20 Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay.
00:18:25 And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play.
00:18:32 Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay.
00:18:36 And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play.
00:18:42 Here's proof you can make it out of anything.
00:18:45 Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of wood.
00:18:50 If you don't mind me saying, I think I made it good.
00:18:56 Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay.
00:19:00 And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play.
00:19:05 I like this one.
00:19:06 [MUSIC - "DREIDEL"]
00:19:09 Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of plastic.
00:19:14 If you don't mind me saying, I think that it's fantastic.
00:19:19 Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay.
00:19:24 And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play.
00:19:29 Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay.
00:19:34 And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play.
00:19:39 [APPLAUSE]
00:19:48 Thank you so much.
00:19:51 Well, we have a lot of entertainers
00:19:53 to come up here tonight.
00:19:54 I never realized how many talented musicians, comedians,
00:20:00 artists there are in the Phoenix metropolitan area,
00:20:03 and they're all on television.
00:20:04 So we're proud that they're here with us tonight, and you too.
00:20:07 Bless you.
00:20:08 Thank you for being with us.
00:20:09 [MUSIC - "FELIZ NAVIDAD"]
00:20:13 Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad,
00:20:22 prospero año en felicidad.
00:20:27 Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad,
00:20:35 prospero año en felicidad.
00:20:38 Here we go.
00:20:40 Want to wish you a merry Christmas,
00:20:43 want to wish you a merry Christmas,
00:20:46 want to wish you a merry Christmas
00:20:48 from the bottom of my heart.
00:20:53 Wish you a merry Christmas, wish you a merry Christmas,
00:20:59 wish you a merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.
00:21:05 Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad,
00:21:13 prospero año en felicidad.
00:21:18 Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad,
00:21:26 prospero año en felicidad.
00:21:29 Will you help me?
00:21:30 Want to wish you a merry Christmas,
00:21:34 I want to wish you a merry Christmas,
00:21:37 wish you a merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.
00:21:43 Wish you a merry Christmas, wish you a merry Christmas,
00:21:50 wish you a merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.
00:21:54 I--
00:22:02 Thank you, Lord.
00:22:11 What power you have with that harp.
00:22:13 I'm not selling Christmas CDs tonight,
00:22:15 but before I step off the stage, I wanted to show you,
00:22:18 I spent 10 years of my life writing a Christmas CD,
00:22:21 and the Miller family, David Miller and Jack Miller,
00:22:25 all helped me produce it.
00:22:27 And so I had the CD done, which I'm very happy with.
00:22:30 I just did not have a CD cover.
00:22:32 And my mom passed away a few years ago,
00:22:34 and I was going through her things and her old photographs,
00:22:39 and I saw this photograph.
00:22:40 And I said, Mom, that's going to be
00:22:42 the cover of my Christmas CD.
00:22:44 And it is.
00:22:45 This is the cover of my Christmas CD.
00:22:47 [APPLAUSE]
00:22:51 That little boy is me.
00:22:57 I know.
00:22:58 Bless you all.
00:22:59 Thank you for being here.
00:23:00 Boy, we've got a whole bunch of great entertainers.
00:23:02 God bless you.
00:23:03 Thank you.
00:23:03 [APPLAUSE]
00:23:06 That's a good one.
00:23:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:23:10 Did you see that, Jim?
00:23:12 I have excellent music.
00:23:13 I know.
00:23:14 Thank you, Mort.
00:23:18 By the way, Morrie, does everybody
00:23:21 know that you just had hip surgery
00:23:23 and you're out here dancing?
00:23:25 You go.
00:23:27 And I just-- before I introduce our-- yeah, exactly.
00:23:30 Before I introduce--
00:23:31 Why did you ask me to come up here?
00:23:32 Well, because you yelled at me a little bit over there
00:23:36 and reprimanded me, and I want to apologize.
00:23:39 I was sitting over here thoroughly enjoying
00:23:41 Mike Chamberlain, and we were singing together,
00:23:44 and a couple got up to dance, obviously loaded to the gills.
00:23:48 But then you said, come up here.
00:23:53 Well, you kind of said that I skipped
00:23:55 over an introduction to you.
00:23:58 And I forgot the most important parts
00:24:01 about how talented and unbelievable you are,
00:24:06 and that nobody can match your talent and energy.
00:24:10 I was afraid you were going to skip that.
00:24:12 No, so I'm writing it right now.
00:24:14 OK, here's my talent.
00:24:17 For anybody who has no idea what we're talking about,
00:24:20 if you just got here from Topeka--
00:24:23 We're sorry.
00:24:25 Oh, if you got here from Topeka, this is called a city.
00:24:33 No, I just wanted to tell you what
00:24:35 she is talking about, the grand talent of Pat McManus.
00:24:39 Here's what I did for a living for 30 years on Channel 5.
00:24:43 I dressed up in bizarre costumes, sometimes a little
00:24:48 boy, sometimes an old lady.
00:24:50 The state legislature spent an enormous amount of time
00:24:57 talking about the fact that we must do away with drag queens.
00:25:03 And I was one for 30 years.
00:25:06 And it was a kid show.
00:25:07 So that's what I did professionally.
00:25:11 What I actually wound up doing was terrifying children
00:25:17 and probably causing most of them to go into therapy.
00:25:21 And that's what she's talking about,
00:25:24 considering the grand talent of Pat McManus.
00:25:27 Will you please introduce somebody
00:25:29 that's a real talent?
00:25:30 But I just want to say, I just want to say,
00:25:35 you are the best at what you do.
00:25:40 And we are so honored.
00:25:44 You are an Arizona treasure.
00:25:47 And I know that sounds cliche.
00:25:48 And I know that sounds tacky, Pat.
00:25:50 But you are it.
00:25:53 The best that I do is free Christmas shows.
00:25:57 I just show up.
00:25:59 They say, we might have food later.
00:26:01 That's it.
00:26:02 Thank you, dear.
00:26:04 Thanks.
00:26:04 By the way, has anybody seen Murders in the Building?
00:26:07 Only Murders in the Building on Hulu?
00:26:09 Martin Short.
00:26:13 If you watch this series on Hulu, you will be spending--
00:26:18 am I right?
00:26:18 You will be spending the night with Martin Short.
00:26:20 You are exactly-- your character is exactly him.
00:26:25 You've got to watch it.
00:26:26 It's amazing.
00:26:26 No, the Martin, people don't understand.
00:26:28 Short, yes.
00:26:30 All right.
00:26:33 This next amazing, beautiful woman, I love her.
00:26:38 I've admired her voice, her talent, her energy,
00:26:43 her ability to show up and give and give and give.
00:26:47 I have not seen--
00:26:48 I have seen this woman in so many places doing
00:26:51 so many fundraisers on and on for years and years and years.
00:26:56 Her voice never fades.
00:26:59 It gets better and stronger, just
00:27:01 like her beauty and her heart.
00:27:03 So please welcome another Arizona treasure, Alice Tatum.
00:27:08 [APPLAUSE]
00:27:10 Thank you.
00:27:23 I admire you guys so much.
00:27:25 I'm a horrible speaker.
00:27:26 In fact, I'm horribly afraid.
00:27:29 But I grew up with Pat McMahon.
00:27:32 And Pat, do you remember this one?
00:27:36 Work, work, dirty work, dirtiest work I've ever known.
00:27:43 I used to just think you were a rock star anyway.
00:27:48 And then we-- just so you know, I broke my wrist.
00:27:51 So this must be the year of breaking things, Mari.
00:27:55 I broke my wrist a week ago.
00:27:56 And I had this big old white cast on.
00:27:58 And I was so happy when they traded it out for this.
00:28:00 So sorry if I look--
00:28:02 you know, I'm doing the robotic dance.
00:28:06 And I'd like to thank my daughter Heather
00:28:08 for driving me here because of my wrist.
00:28:11 That's my daughter.
00:28:12 Stand up and say hello, Heather.
00:28:13 [APPLAUSE]
00:28:15 Thank you.
00:28:17 And on piano is Frank Smith.
00:28:19 And for those of you--
00:28:22 am I too loud?
00:28:23 [CLEARS THROAT]
00:28:25 Anyway, well, the monitor really works good.
00:28:29 But Frank Smith, I used to be in a band with Frank
00:28:32 years and years ago in the Charles Lewis Quintet,
00:28:35 plus one.
00:28:35 I was the plus one.
00:28:37 And he was the amazing saxophone player.
00:28:39 And still, I think-- wouldn't you
00:28:41 call that your first instrument?
00:28:43 He is.
00:28:44 And a wonderful flute player.
00:28:47 And he plays piano just because he can.
00:28:50 Anyway, thank you, Frank, for playing tonight.
00:28:54 And thank you all for having me here again.
00:28:56 I hope I can sing this.
00:29:01 Yeah, "Slow and Gospelling."
00:29:03 [MUSIC - FRANK SMITH, "SLOW AND GOSPELING"]
00:29:13 Oh, holy night, the stars are brightly shining.
00:29:21 It is the night of our dear Savior's birth.
00:29:37 Long lay the world in sin and error
00:29:45 biding till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
00:30:00 A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,
00:30:11 for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
00:30:21 Fall on your knees, oh, hear the angel voices.
00:30:41 Oh, night divine, oh, night when Christ was born.
00:31:02 Oh, night divine, oh, night, oh, night divine.
00:31:23 Fall on your knees, oh, hear the angel voices.
00:31:43 Oh, night divine, oh, night when Christ was born.
00:32:04 Oh, night divine, oh, night, oh, night divine.
00:32:23 [APPLAUSE]
00:32:40 Thank you so much.
00:32:41 Thank you very much.
00:32:43 Thank you.
00:32:43 Thank you, Marlene, for having me.
00:32:46 Thank you.
00:32:47 Thanks, daughter.
00:32:47 [LAUGHS]
00:32:48 [APPLAUSE]
00:32:51 Nice job.
00:32:52 You just ripped me to pieces.
00:33:09 Alice, you are such a God-given talent.
00:33:13 You really deserve to stand up and be received one more time
00:33:17 by these folks.
00:33:18 [APPLAUSE]
00:33:20 Wow.
00:33:21 We were talking about the fact that the people here,
00:33:31 they play, they sing, they introduce people,
00:33:35 they get laughs.
00:33:37 And what an incredible opportunity
00:33:40 it is for anybody to wind up falling into this career field.
00:33:46 My parents were a dance act in vaudeville
00:33:49 and traveled all over the country.
00:33:53 And I had a great time just watching people.
00:33:58 Maybe two of them were sounded as Alistair.
00:34:03 Ella Fitzgerald was one of them.
00:34:06 But just an amazing opportunity when
00:34:12 you have that kind of a life and then
00:34:13 you fall into another form of entertainment.
00:34:17 And I'm not a name dropper, I promise you.
00:34:20 But what I do is I get a chance to talk to people.
00:34:25 And many of them are just extraordinarily well-known
00:34:28 people.
00:34:29 Got a chance to do a movie with Orson Welles.
00:34:33 I've interviewed the stars of our time.
00:34:38 But when you get a chance to do this,
00:34:41 when you get to do talk shows of all kinds,
00:34:45 you get to interview Mother Teresa and the Dalai
00:34:54 Lama on The God Show.
00:34:56 Now with all of those names, though, I've got to tell you,
00:35:00 the first major local star that I met in Phoenix, Arizona,
00:35:06 walking through the halls of one of the stations
00:35:11 was a guy that never stopped impressing me
00:35:17 with his sense of humor, his impression of--
00:35:21 his impression of a guy who was pretending
00:35:28 not to be excited about what was happening on the court,
00:35:31 but he was peeing in his pants every time
00:35:33 that the Suns won a ball game.
00:35:35 Ladies and gentlemen, Al McCoy.
00:35:37 Would you stand, Al?
00:35:39 [APPLAUSE]
00:35:41 There he is.
00:35:46 Yeah.
00:35:47 [APPLAUSE]
00:35:50 In that whole field of play-by-play people,
00:35:58 for every individual sport, he's the one that everybody respects.
00:36:05 And I think it's because we're the same size.
00:36:07 I think that that's what puts you over to the top.
00:36:11 Al, you're here virtually every year, and occasionally,
00:36:15 not this year, because we have so many folks.
00:36:18 And besides that, he reminded me he's retired now.
00:36:22 But every once in a while, we've imposed upon him
00:36:26 to play piano, one of the great recording level jazz pianists,
00:36:34 along with being that giant of play-by-play basketball,
00:36:38 how lucky we are to have him.
00:36:40 Oh, we're also pretty lucky to have the Owens family as part
00:36:45 of our lives in broadcasting and music.
00:36:48 Let me read you a little bit about our next guest, if I may.
00:36:52 If I may not, well, then go away.
00:36:57 In fact, the next guest said once,
00:36:59 if you want me to perform, all you have to do is call me.
00:37:02 And we did.
00:37:03 Not only a performer, writer, director, country music expert,
00:37:07 but this guy was a legend in radio.
00:37:11 Born in Mesa, Arizona, moved to California, became a leader
00:37:15 of a rock and roll band at the age of 14.
00:37:18 And when he came back to Arizona to go to college,
00:37:21 he became music director of a country music radio station,
00:37:25 one of the giant stations.
00:37:27 And Billboard named him Music Director of the Year four times.
00:37:31 I name him Buddy Owens.
00:37:33 Here he is.
00:37:35 [ Applause ]
00:37:43 >> You know, thank you, Pat.
00:37:46 My goodness, I thought that sound was coming from above.
00:37:54 I was not sure.
00:37:55 Hello, everyone.
00:37:58 Again, how are you guys?
00:38:02 So good to see you guys.
00:38:04 My goodness, you know, I think this is about the fifth year
00:38:08 or sixth year that I've played
00:38:11 at the House Broadcasting Christmas Show.
00:38:14 And the first year, could have maybe got that half in here.
00:38:20 And now, it's at least doubled.
00:38:24 And I have to tell you, it's so gratifying.
00:38:28 And Morrie and Mary and all of you guys, Polly,
00:38:30 everybody's just doing such a wonderful job with this show.
00:38:34 I am so honored and just so pleased and touches my heart
00:38:40 to be able to be a part of this.
00:38:42 And as long as you ask me, as long as I'm alive,
00:38:46 as long as I can talk, I guess, I will be here.
00:38:50 So you guys are wonderful.
00:38:53 And I think the House of Broadcasting needs
00:38:55 to have a little round of applause right now, people.
00:38:59 Come on. Yeah.
00:39:00 [ Applause ]
00:39:06 Well, Dave sang every one of my songs.
00:39:11 So, not really, but that was --
00:39:15 you know, he did sing "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree,"
00:39:19 and I was trying to -- I was thinking about maybe doing that.
00:39:22 And I heard recently -- it won't be too long.
00:39:25 I promise.
00:39:26 I heard recently that that song was recorded in 1958, I believe,
00:39:34 and never made number one, never, never, until this week.
00:39:42 First week ever, "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" is the
00:39:45 number one song on the Billboard charts,
00:39:47 and I think that is awesome, you know.
00:39:50 It's a wonderful song.
00:39:53 And anyway, I'm going to do about three songs for you guys.
00:39:58 And my family -- I kind of wanted to dedicate tonight
00:40:03 to two of my family, who I miss very much.
00:40:08 My dad was a country music singer
00:40:10 and owned radio stations here since about 1968, '69 or so.
00:40:16 And my brother, who is here tonight --
00:40:19 I don't know where you are, Michael.
00:40:20 Wave at me, would you?
00:40:22 There he -- where?
00:40:24 Oh, he's went to the bathroom?
00:40:26 Oh, there he is.
00:40:29 There's my brother, Michael, who came over here in 1978
00:40:35 and spearheaded our radio stations for 30 --
00:40:42 for 28, 25 years, whatever it was,
00:40:45 and really was the main reason that we had the success
00:40:51 that we did.
00:40:53 And Michael, you know I love you,
00:40:55 and I always appreciate everything you've done
00:40:58 for our family and for that radio station.
00:41:01 I really do.
00:41:02 So nice to see you tonight, pal.
00:41:03 All right.
00:41:04 I want to do -- what's this?
00:41:07 My -- it's not amplified.
00:41:08 Can you hear that all right?
00:41:11 Perfect. No?
00:41:14 Yeah, okay.
00:41:16 I want to do one of my dad's songs.
00:41:18 My dad's name was Buck Owens.
00:41:20 He was a country music singer, and I always had music in my life.
00:41:27 Mike and I always had music in our lives, not only with my dad,
00:41:30 but also my mom and on down the line,
00:41:32 and I'll tell you a little bit more in a minute.
00:41:34 So here's one of his songs that he wrote in 1965,
00:41:37 and it went to number one a couple of weeks later.
00:41:41 Well, daddy looks a lot like mama, and mama looks a lot like him.
00:41:49 It's not the way I had him pictured.
00:41:52 Daddy was a much too thin.
00:41:55 Never went down the chimney, so mama must have let him in.
00:42:01 Daddy looked a lot like -- Santa looked a lot like daddy,
00:42:08 or daddy looked a lot like him.
00:42:11 Well, they thought I was fast asleep,
00:42:13 and they thought I was tucked in bed.
00:42:17 They never thought that I'd come a creepin',
00:42:20 or that I'd hear what was said.
00:42:24 Mama put her arm around daddy, daddy put her arm around him.
00:42:29 So if Santa Claus ain't Santa, well, I'm going to tell on them.
00:42:35 Well, Santa looked a lot like daddy, and daddy looked a lot like him.
00:42:42 That's not the way I had him pictured.
00:42:46 Santa was a much too thin.
00:42:49 He didn't come down the chimney, so mama must have let him in.
00:42:55 Santa looked a lot like daddy, or daddy looked a lot like him.
00:43:01 Got to raise this up here.
00:43:03 [ Music ]
00:43:08 Well, they never thought --
00:43:12 I only sing this song one time a year, and I always mess it up.
00:43:15 Sorry. Well, I never saw Dancer Prancer.
00:43:20 I never heard the sleigh bells ring.
00:43:22 I never saw the red-nosed reindeer,
00:43:26 like they show on the TV screens.
00:43:29 Well, they sure made a lot of presents,
00:43:32 so Santa Claus he must have been.
00:43:35 Santa looked a lot like daddy, or daddy looked a lot like him.
00:43:41 Well, Santa looked a lot like daddy, or daddy looked a lot like him.
00:43:48 That's not the way I had him pictured.
00:43:51 Santa was a much too thin.
00:43:54 He didn't come down the chimney, so mama must have let him in.
00:44:00 Santa looked a lot like daddy, or daddy looked a lot like him.
00:44:06 Yeah, Santa looked a lot like daddy, or daddy looked a lot like him.
00:44:12 [ Applause ]
00:44:18 Thank you.
00:44:20 [ Applause ]
00:44:22 Thank you very much.
00:44:25 I told you that we've been around country music
00:44:27 for a long time in our lives, and we really have.
00:44:31 My dad was a singer for, I don't know, 50, 60, 65 years of his life,
00:44:39 and he married my mom when they were both 18.
00:44:42 They lived in Gilbert and Chandler.
00:44:44 Came out here from Sherman, Texas, and Norman, Oklahoma.
00:44:49 And they drove out here, not knowing,
00:44:53 150 miles away from each other, they drove out here.
00:44:57 And about a week apart, and both their cars broke down in Arizona,
00:45:03 and they just happened to be, one of them, Gilbert, one Chandler,
00:45:07 ended up being friends in high school, and after that, got married,
00:45:12 and spit out a couple of kids.
00:45:16 And so they were married and together for about two and a half,
00:45:21 three years, and then decided to go to California.
00:45:27 And we grew up in a place called Bakersfield, California,
00:45:31 and I was there for the rest of my life until I went two years
00:45:37 of college, and then I came here.
00:45:40 And went to Arizona State one year, and Mesa Community College one year,
00:45:46 and just absolutely fell in love with Arizona, and knew I wanted
00:45:50 to be here permanently at some point in my life.
00:45:53 And in '78, Mike and I moved here around the same time,
00:45:58 or at the same time, actually.
00:46:00 And so it was a great experience for me.
00:46:05 But my mom was, as I said, a country music singer also, and --
00:46:11 but my dad and mom had problems, and they separated,
00:46:16 and were not married for a long time.
00:46:17 I didn't have a dad figure in my life.
00:46:20 Mike and I just kind of grew up with a bunch of musicians all
00:46:23 around us all the time, and aunts and uncles
00:46:27 who cared a lot about us.
00:46:29 And so my mom, one day, when Mike and I were coming home from school,
00:46:35 I was about -- I want to say I was 14, 13 or 14.
00:46:40 Mike and I came home from school.
00:46:42 She had been gone up in Fairbanks, Alaska.
00:46:44 And, you know, working a bar up there at an Air Force base or something,
00:46:49 and we knew we were going to be seeing her when we walked in the door.
00:46:54 And, man, we were going to be so happy, because she was gone for --
00:46:57 she'd been gone for like six weeks or so.
00:46:59 And we walked in the door, and there was my grandmother who lived
00:47:05 with us at the time, and my mom, and another guy sitting on the couch.
00:47:10 And so I thought, okay, what's going on?
00:47:13 You know, because my mom had a boyfriend at the time,
00:47:16 another guy that -- this guy.
00:47:20 And so I was a little bit concerned.
00:47:21 And so I -- we just kind of played it cool.
00:47:26 Mike and I kind of loving mom, and we hugged and hugged grandma
00:47:30 and hugged mom, and it was such a nice time.
00:47:33 And so mom got up and said, boys,
00:47:37 I want to introduce you to your new stepdad.
00:47:44 And so we kind of went, what?
00:47:46 And so we backed up a little bit, and it was like a --
00:47:49 that was kind of different for us.
00:47:51 And so we didn't know anything about him.
00:47:54 And, you know, I was standing up, and Mike was standing up,
00:47:57 and pretty soon he stood up to shake hands with us.
00:48:01 And I was in -- I was a sophomore in high school,
00:48:04 and Mike was maybe in eighth grade.
00:48:06 And he was shorter than both of us.
00:48:10 So it was a bit of a different thing for us,
00:48:14 because we had always been used to lots of ladies in our life,
00:48:18 and that's pretty much what raised us.
00:48:20 Anyway, so we found out later, he introduced himself.
00:48:25 His name was Merle Haggard.
00:48:29 So Merle and Mike and I, we proceeded to try
00:48:32 to get to know each other.
00:48:34 And we're talking, and I'm asking him, you know,
00:48:36 a few things, and blah, blah, blah.
00:48:38 And I said, so what do you want to do?
00:48:41 And he said, well, I want to learn how to play guitar.
00:48:43 I saw John Cash when I was in prison and found
00:48:45 out that's kind of what I want to do.
00:48:47 And I want to learn how to play guitar, and I want to learn how
00:48:49 to write songs and sing.
00:48:51 And so I thought, that's a good idea, you know,
00:48:56 since my dad was already doing that,
00:48:58 and my mom's already doing that.
00:49:00 And so he said to me that that's my ambition,
00:49:08 and I want to be good at it.
00:49:10 So we said, okay, good.
00:49:12 And I asked him about that time.
00:49:14 I said, so what have you been doing for the last two
00:49:18 or three years of your life?
00:49:20 You know, and he said, well,
00:49:24 about a year ago I got out of prison.
00:49:28 And I'm like, what?
00:49:31 And so I was really, we were really taken aback.
00:49:34 And anyway, from not having a dad for a long time,
00:49:39 because my dad was on the road for six, seven years in a row
00:49:45 for 300 days a year, and he was gone all the time.
00:49:48 That's the way you had to do it back there.
00:49:50 There was no social media.
00:49:52 There were no, you know, immediate stars like, you know,
00:49:55 kind of what you have today.
00:49:57 And so Merle was a really, really good guy to us,
00:50:02 and he taught us a lot of things.
00:50:04 Taught Mike and I how to fish and how to put a worm on a hook.
00:50:07 And I was working in my driveway one night on my first car,
00:50:12 and I lost my keys.
00:50:15 And he said, don't worry about it.
00:50:17 And I said, what?
00:50:18 And he goes in and taught me how to start a car without a key.
00:50:23 Like, okay.
00:50:25 This is good.
00:50:26 This guy knows a lot of stuff.
00:50:28 So anyway, he was a really good guy to us,
00:50:32 and I always appreciated Merle so much.
00:50:35 And I felt like I want to sing one of his songs tonight
00:50:39 if I could.
00:50:40 If we make it through December, everything
00:50:47 going to be all right, I know.
00:50:48 It's the coldest time of winter.
00:50:57 And I shiver when I see the falling snow.
00:51:00 If we make it through December, God
00:51:10 plans me in a warmer town come summertime, maybe even
00:51:17 California.
00:51:18 If we make it through December, we'll be fine.
00:51:25 I got laid off down at the factory,
00:51:32 and their timing's not the greatest in the world.
00:51:36 And my little girl don't understand why Daddy can't
00:51:46 afford no Christmas here.
00:51:50 I don't mean to hate December.
00:51:52 It's meant to be the warmest time of year, the coldest time.
00:52:02 But my little girl don't understand why Daddy can't
00:52:09 afford no Christmas cheer.
00:52:14 If we make it through December, God
00:52:21 plans me in a warmer town come summertime.
00:52:27 It's the coldest time of winter.
00:52:29 And I shiver when I hear the falling snow.
00:52:38 If we make it through December, God
00:52:44 plans me in a warmer town come summertime, maybe even
00:52:51 California.
00:52:52 If we make it through December, we'll be fine.
00:52:59 [APPLAUSE]
00:53:04 Thank you.
00:53:06 [APPLAUSE]
00:53:07 You know what?
00:53:13 I actually have to sing those songs more than one time
00:53:15 a year, and that's right here, so I can remember the words.
00:53:19 Anyway, I want to sing one more song for you if I can.
00:53:24 As I was-- a couple of weeks ago,
00:53:27 and I've sang this song a couple of times,
00:53:31 I remember back my--
00:53:35 probably what was my first Christmas
00:53:37 that I can remember in my head.
00:53:39 I was about five or six years old,
00:53:42 and Mike and I were four and six,
00:53:47 and we had a little apartment with my mom.
00:53:51 And I just remember so being mystified about Santa Claus
00:53:58 and the Christmas trees and presents and all that,
00:54:03 and I was just so, so anxious.
00:54:04 So I remember getting up in the morning,
00:54:13 and this is literally my first memory of Christmas.
00:54:17 I got up in the morning.
00:54:20 Before it was light, looked out there,
00:54:23 and I saw my Christmas tree.
00:54:26 And then I saw down below, there was a round train track
00:54:33 and a little train that was going around and around.
00:54:37 And I thought, oh my god, Santa did not
00:54:40 forget me, which I thought was awesome.
00:54:44 So my mom sang this song to my kids, her grandkids,
00:54:50 a couple of times, and I thought,
00:54:52 I'm never going to forget that song.
00:54:53 So I would like to do it for you if I could right now.
00:54:57 Oh, toy trains, little toy tracks, little boy toys,
00:55:05 coming in a sack, carried by men, dressed in white and red.
00:55:12 Little boy, don't you think it's time you were in bed?
00:55:17 Close your eyes, look into the skies.
00:55:24 All is calm, all is well.
00:55:32 Soon you'll hear Kris Kringle and the jingle bells,
00:55:37 singing, oh, toy trains, little toy tracks, little boy toys,
00:55:45 coming down a track, carried by men, dressed in white and red.
00:55:52 Little boy, don't you think it's time you were in bed?
00:55:58 Little boy, don't you think it's time you were in bed?
00:56:04 Thank you very much.
00:56:05 Merry Christmas, everybody.
00:56:06 [APPLAUSE]
00:56:09,
00:56:37 So, Buddy, before I met my husband,
00:56:44 I wanted to introduce you to my husband.
00:56:47 John, will you stand up?
00:56:49 He's here tonight.
00:56:51 Before I met the love of my life, 22 years,
00:56:54 the nicest man I've ever met in my whole life,
00:56:57 this was my celebrity crush for years and years and years.
00:57:03 Be careful, because I wasn't married at the time either.
00:57:06 [LAUGHTER]
00:57:08 Buddy, I love you.
00:57:09 You are so great.
00:57:10 Oh, my goodness.
00:57:11 All right, thank you, sweetie.
00:57:12 Thank you.
00:57:13 Merry Christmas.
00:57:13 [APPLAUSE]
00:57:19 I wanted to introduce my husband,
00:57:21 because he is a treasure.
00:57:24 I mean, I have never met anybody-- he didn't want animals,
00:57:28 and he has 33 now.
00:57:30 That's love.
00:57:32 But I am so grateful for so many things.
00:57:37 I'm grateful for everything in my life right now.
00:57:40 I'm grateful for my family.
00:57:43 I'm grateful for my Lord.
00:57:45 I'm grateful for my country, even though it's
00:57:47 going to heck in a handbasket in so many ways.
00:57:50 I have hope that we're going to get it back.
00:57:53 But I'm really grateful for the man
00:57:55 that I married, because he is just a kind person.
00:57:59 And I think of all the attributes
00:58:02 you can want out of somebody, I think kindness wins the day.
00:58:08 I don't care about charming.
00:58:10 I don't care about cute.
00:58:12 I don't care about money.
00:58:14 I care about kindness.
00:58:15 And I married a man that has the kindest heart.
00:58:18 And I just wanted to acknowledge him,
00:58:21 because we almost lost him.
00:58:25 John was diagnosed with stage four bone cancer.
00:58:29 And he is here and alive and healthy,
00:58:34 and he's on the other side of it.
00:58:35 [APPLAUSE]
00:58:37 So you give me hope.
00:58:44 You give me hope for a future that's going to be amazing.
00:58:49 Anyway, thank you.
00:58:51 Our next guest-- this is incredible.
00:58:54 You've been hearing the voice of God, the music of God,
00:58:56 as everybody walks in and out.
00:58:59 And that is a new talent to our beautiful concert this year.
00:59:06 Dr. Joyce Bukers-- now, she is the harp player, obviously.
00:59:11 I've always wanted to learn how to play the harp.
00:59:13 You do it beautifully, doctor.
00:59:15 And come here for a second.
00:59:16 And so she started the Hope Foundation--
00:59:19 The Harp.
00:59:20 I'm sorry, the Harp Foundation.
00:59:21 Do you know what the Harp Foundation does?
00:59:24 Well, I'm going to have you explain it.
00:59:25 You partnered with Hospice.
00:59:27 And if anybody has ever read anything about Fran Lebowitz,
00:59:31 she's just a satirical, amazing writer.
00:59:36 And she said--
00:59:37 Martin Scorsese followed her around for months and months
00:59:40 and did a documentary on her.
00:59:41 And she said, there are two people that change the world.
00:59:45 There are two people-- musicians and cooks.
00:59:48 Musicians and cooks provide music and food--
00:59:51 the two things on the planet that can evoke memories
00:59:56 and joy.
00:59:57 You can let your heart break to music
01:00:00 and be comforted with food.
01:00:03 And so I want you, doctor, to talk
01:00:05 about what you're doing with the Harp Foundation.
01:00:07 And I'm so glad you're here tonight.
01:00:10 God bless you.
01:00:11 I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be playing glissandos
01:00:16 after each one of these speakers,
01:00:18 because you know that's the heavenly music of the harps.
01:00:22 But we started this program 25 years ago
01:00:24 at Hospice of the Valley.
01:00:26 And we've served over 300,000 patients all over,
01:00:30 including opioid babies and PTSD soldiers coming back
01:00:35 from Iraq and Afghanistan.
01:00:38 And you understand that the beauty of the music
01:00:42 at critical moments, not only at end of life,
01:00:46 but throughout our lives.
01:00:47 And so I would like to take a moment for you all to pause.
01:00:50 I'm going to be playing--
01:00:51 this is my grandmother's harp.
01:00:54 And she was the first woman in the Los Angeles
01:00:57 Symphony with 150 men.
01:00:59 And of course, women could not play like men at that time.
01:01:03 So she was the one who discovered,
01:01:05 why don't you put up a curtain and just listen to the tone?
01:01:09 So that's how women started getting into orchestras.
01:01:11 And so I'm very proud, because she is--
01:01:14 this is her harp.
01:01:16 And the piece I'm going to be playing today
01:01:17 is probably her most well-known.
01:01:20 She had 47 of these pieces into the Library of Congress.
01:01:24 And it's very well-known, not only as Greensleeves,
01:01:27 but also as What Child Is This?
01:01:30 So enjoy.
01:01:30 [VIDEO PLAYBACK]

01:04:09 [APPLAUSE]
01:04:12 Dr. Joyce Buecher, ladies and gentlemen.
01:04:19 [APPLAUSE]
01:04:22 Angel mothers are slapping their kids, saying, see?
01:04:28 I told you.
01:04:29 When you practice, this is what you can sound like.
01:04:33 Oh.
01:04:38 Folks, listen, this is the part--
01:04:40 I haven't done a commercial now for 45 minutes.
01:04:43 And this is the part where I get a chance to at least relax
01:04:47 and say, yes, God is good.
01:04:50 We get a chance to sell stuff.
01:04:52 So the Hobie Christmas Concert raffle--
01:04:56 I'm not going to go through everything.
01:04:58 But having had audience members walk out on me
01:05:02 through my entire career, I'm not going to be offended.
01:05:05 If you go back and get tickets--
01:05:08 oh, really?
01:05:08 What for?
01:05:10 Dozens and dozens of really terrific prizes.
01:05:14 I'm just going to give you a cross-section.
01:05:16 The Harkins Ultimate Movie Experience Gift Basket.
01:05:21 Phoenix Suns, the ultimate collectibles,
01:05:24 including a bobblehead of Al McCoy.
01:05:30 Yeah.
01:05:32 Arizona Cardinals autographed football.
01:05:35 And the Diatri--
01:05:37 I don't have to tell you which Diatri we're talking about.
01:05:40 The Diatri Gourmet Foods biscotti-filled glass display
01:05:46 jar.
01:05:47 Besides being an enormous talent,
01:05:49 what a cook this woman is.
01:05:51 And that's the raffle.
01:05:53 The silent auction, just a cross-section.
01:05:57 Get this.
01:05:59 You knew they were coming, but you probably
01:06:01 thought you couldn't get tickets.
01:06:03 And it's people our age that really appreciate
01:06:08 having the satisfaction of having the Rolling Stones come
01:06:12 to the Valley of the Sun.
01:06:14 Two tickets for the 2024 Hackney Diamonds Tour.
01:06:20 And I don't have to tell you how quickly it's going to sell out.
01:06:23 This is part of the silent auction back there.
01:06:26 You can get tickets right now.
01:06:28 Star Worldwide Network's professional podcast package.
01:06:32 That's where I do the God Show, by the way.
01:06:36 On that network, it's an international podcast
01:06:40 organization.
01:06:41 It's a $6,000 value for whatever it
01:06:44 is that you want to do on the radio within reasonable taste.
01:06:50 And I'm going through these pages.
01:06:53 Aaron Rodgers' Green Bay Packers jersey,
01:06:57 back when Aaron used to actually play,
01:07:00 and should be back when he gets back off that bad ankle.
01:07:08 Just really some sensational things.
01:07:10 A ticket to Beauty and the Beast on stage at the Chandler
01:07:15 Center for the Arts.
01:07:16 All of these available right now.
01:07:19 And all you have to do is to go back with your credit card
01:07:22 and an enthusiastic sense of your good luck.
01:07:26 Hold on just a second.
01:07:27 I want to see what it is that's next here.
01:07:30 Oh.
01:07:30 This is not phony enthusiasm.
01:07:36 Everybody was eligible for one prize.
01:07:42 Now, you had to go back and buy tickets.
01:07:44 And you still can until they close the raffle table
01:07:49 and the other table for the gift certificates.
01:07:59 This is the door prize.
01:08:01 And everybody had an opportunity to win this.
01:08:04 The door prize is an authentic Landmobag.
01:08:10 That means-- yes.
01:08:13 I promise you, if you don't know what a Landmobag is,
01:08:17 there are people that trade their cars in just
01:08:20 for the possibility of winning a Landmobag that
01:08:24 started years and years ago on the Wallace and Landmau show.
01:08:28 Listen, as a matter of fact, let me ask you.
01:08:31 I know that a lot of you came from someplace else.
01:08:34 Is there anybody here who has no idea
01:08:37 what I'm talking about with Wallace and Landmau or Landmau
01:08:40 bags?
01:08:42 Excellent.
01:08:43 This is a quality audience.
01:08:46 Now, listen, the door prize, an authentic Landmau bag--
01:08:50 we're about to name the winner, by the way, of the door.
01:08:54 And in this Landmau bag--
01:08:56 this is so real--
01:08:58 the original Twinkies that we had, they're still good.
01:09:02 A custom Landmau tie t-shirt.
01:09:10 Landmau never learned to tie a tie,
01:09:13 so we painted the tie on the front of a t-shirt.
01:09:18 And a book by Wallace, otherwise known as Bill Thompson,
01:09:23 "Thanks for Tuning In," is the story of Wallace's life.
01:09:27 That's the door prize.
01:09:31 Who's going to tell me who the winner is?
01:09:33 What?
01:09:38 Wait, no, you're asking them to trust me?
01:09:42 OK, all right.
01:09:44 OK, this is the way we do it on television.
01:09:47 We move them around.
01:09:49 I hope you're really excited about this,
01:09:52 because when you go home with a Landmau bag,
01:09:56 wearing a Landmau t-shirt, the neighbor
01:09:59 is going to say, I never want to speak to you again,
01:10:02 as long as I live.
01:10:03 The winner, right now.
01:10:05 And I want that winner to come up and introduce themselves.
01:10:08 Hold on.
01:10:12 Ticket 982559.
01:10:23 982559.
01:10:29 Check your ticket, Pat.
01:10:30 Now, we know that the winner has to be here.
01:10:36 I lost mine, so it could be me.
01:10:41 Excuse me, Jerry, this is not your show.
01:10:43 No, we love you, but just be quiet.
01:10:49 I'm going to say the name one more, the number one more time.
01:10:54 And if you either can't find your ticket in the purse
01:10:58 or your pocket, you're out of luck,
01:11:00 because this is it before I draw another ticket.
01:11:06 982559 for the door prize.
01:11:11 Wow.
01:11:17 You know what would be terrible if the one person who never won
01:11:20 a Landmau bag and always wanted one
01:11:23 and was sitting in the seat next to the kid who
01:11:26 won the Landmau bag-- you've heard those stories, right?
01:11:30 And if that person, with that kind of luck,
01:11:33 is now in the bathroom.
01:11:36 OK, folks, that's it for that ticket.
01:11:39 And we're going to keep drawing no matter what.
01:11:41 Can't go home.
01:11:42 There's a lot of nervous folks out there, you know that.
01:11:52 Because they're waiting to find out if the winner is 982572.
01:12:05 Wait, no, do we have a winner?
01:12:08 In the front row for crying out loud?
01:12:13 You know, that's terrific.
01:12:14 And it'll be really terrific if you come up with a ticket.
01:12:17 And no, listen, would I think that you would treat me
01:12:22 in a Protestant church?
01:12:24 Yeah.
01:12:26 982572, your name, sir?
01:12:31 Jim Gross?
01:12:33 Were you a Wallace and Landmau watcher?
01:12:35 Yes, I was.
01:12:37 You know what, if you had said no,
01:12:39 we would have asked you to leave.
01:12:42 You guys were on when I was just a young kid.
01:12:44 Well, yes, we were on when you were a young kid.
01:12:47 We were on when everyone was a young kid.
01:12:50 I was a young kid.
01:12:51 Jim Gross is the winner.
01:12:54 Here's your book by Wallace.
01:12:56 Here's the t-shirt, the Landmau bag.
01:12:58 Turn around, turn around.
01:13:02 All of the television people want
01:13:04 to make sure that they see that this is Jim Gross,
01:13:07 the official winner of the Doar Prize.
01:13:10 OK, and?
01:13:14 It's not like you to be pushing, Rita.
01:13:18 Let's really hear it, because listen,
01:13:20 this may be the last winner that you
01:13:22 see of the famous Landmau bag and all that goes in it.
01:13:26 Congratulations, Jim.
01:13:28 You betcha.
01:13:33 Listen, all I can tell you is that--
01:13:38 excuse me.
01:13:39 You know what that is?
01:13:50 Jim, did you hear this?
01:13:53 It is ho, ho, ha, ha, hee, hee, and ho, ho, ha, ha, hee, hee.
01:13:58 Oh, wait a minute.
01:13:59 Hold on.
01:14:01 Just a second.
01:14:02 Excuse me.
01:14:03 I was so thrilled about listening to the theme song
01:14:06 again.
01:14:07 Who is this, please?
01:14:10 Wallace?
01:14:12 Wallace?
01:14:14 From heaven?
01:14:17 Oh, my god.
01:14:18 Wait.
01:14:19 It's been so long since I've talked to you,
01:14:21 and I'm getting kind of choked up.
01:14:23 This isn't collect, is it?
01:14:24 Well, thank you so much.
01:14:29 Thank you so much.
01:14:29 Listen, we're in the middle of the Holby, the House
01:14:33 of Broadcasting Christmas show.
01:14:35 How is it going up there?
01:14:37 Is it as nice as we hear?
01:14:41 Oh, you're loving it because there's no politicians?
01:14:46 Seems only right.
01:14:48 Landmau OK?
01:14:49 Oh, Landmau's not there.
01:14:51 He's-- what did you say?
01:14:55 He's down the street entertaining kids.
01:14:58 Yeah.
01:14:58 He just gave a guy named Gross the Landmau bag.
01:15:04 We're still giving him away.
01:15:06 Right.
01:15:06 Hey, Wall, I miss you.
01:15:10 What?
01:15:11 Well, a couple of people here did ask me.
01:15:14 I did it last year.
01:15:17 OK.
01:15:18 You don't ask me to do things too often.
01:15:21 Well, yeah, you did.
01:15:24 Thank you, my friend.
01:15:25 Hold on.
01:15:28 You there?
01:15:28 OK.
01:15:31 This is what I did last year, and I hope
01:15:34 you don't mind my imposing.
01:15:35 I'm the low budget performer, so I don't have a comfortment.
01:15:43 Nights are long since you went away.
01:15:51 I dream about you most every day.
01:15:56 My buddies, my buddies, your buddy misses you.
01:16:07 That crazy face, that funny top hat,
01:16:19 the way we laughed when you called Wallace fat.
01:16:26 My buddies, my buddies, your buddy misses you.
01:16:41 I wouldn't have done it if he hadn't asked.
01:16:52 You know that.
01:16:53 Listen, I got a guy coming up.
01:16:56 What an entertainer.
01:16:57 When you're doing the news, how difficult
01:17:00 it is to be entertaining when you're
01:17:03 talking about the news, not just these days, but every day.
01:17:07 But the weather guy gets the chance to get some laughs.
01:17:11 And Dave Muncy was about the most popular weather reporter
01:17:14 in Arizona for over 40 years.
01:17:17 Listen, during the Fiesta Bowl parade--
01:17:20 I love this story--
01:17:22 the star of the Fiesta Bowl parade
01:17:24 that year was Tommy LaSorda, the best known manager
01:17:29 in Major League Baseball.
01:17:30 Tommy LaSorda, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
01:17:35 And all anybody could hear was, that's Dave Muncy on that float.
01:17:40 That's Dave-- who's the fat guy next to him?
01:17:42 Hey, that's Dave Muncy.
01:17:44 And LaSorda got a little ticked.
01:17:46 You know, Italians only have a short sense of humor.
01:17:50 And he says, who the hell is Dave Muncy?
01:17:55 And of course, Dave was sitting next to him.
01:17:57 I think he might have lied.
01:17:59 But that's the kind of enthusiasm
01:18:02 that people met Dave Muncy with every day for good reason.
01:18:07 Here's Dave Muncy.
01:18:08 [APPLAUSE]
01:18:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:18:15 Hi, everybody.
01:18:22 I'm going to kind of clean things up here a little bit.
01:18:25 I don't sing, I don't dance, and I don't
01:18:27 play a musical instrument.
01:18:30 So I won't be up here very long.
01:18:33 I do have something that I can announce to you today, though.
01:18:37 And that is--
01:18:40 I'm sorry?
01:18:42 No, not that.
01:18:45 We just got the contract signed.
01:18:48 We actually just got the spots cut.
01:18:51 They will be starting this weekend on channel 12.
01:18:56 We're bringing back Watch Your Kids Around Water.
01:18:58 [APPLAUSE]
01:19:02 I was very excited when they called.
01:19:09 So we're looking forward to doing it,
01:19:10 to getting that warning out there again for all of the kids.
01:19:16 To save the kids, the warnings are for the parents
01:19:18 to keep their eye on them.
01:19:21 Another big happening in my life, just a few months ago,
01:19:26 I turned 76.
01:19:26 [APPLAUSE]
01:19:31 That just happened.
01:19:32 I didn't do anything to get the applause, which officially
01:19:37 makes me an old fart.
01:19:40 It's not because I turned 76.
01:19:43 It's because somebody called me that.
01:19:47 And as we get older, and all of the people
01:19:50 here that are 76 and older will agree with me,
01:19:54 we don't think we're getting older.
01:19:57 They go, oh, you're 76.
01:19:59 I feel like I'm 30.
01:20:01 I feel like I'm 25.
01:20:03 And then somebody calls you an old fart,
01:20:06 and you start thinking about it.
01:20:08 It happened when I was going through a drive-in restaurant,
01:20:12 or a drive-through.
01:20:14 I don't know how long it's been since you've
01:20:16 been to a restaurant like that, but it'd been a while for me.
01:20:20 And when I pulled up, I didn't realize that they
01:20:24 had 14 different burgers now.
01:20:27 35 ways you can get your fries.
01:20:31 Don't even get me started on the sodas.
01:20:34 And as I was trying to figure out what I wanted,
01:20:38 the young lady in the car behind me honked her horn and said,
01:20:43 hurry up, you old fart.
01:20:45 I don't hear very well.
01:20:50 And I thought she said, you're very smart.
01:20:54 And so I smiled and waved at her,
01:20:57 which didn't help the situation anymore.
01:21:00 The next time, she said it louder.
01:21:04 And I was so upset by it that I actually got out of line
01:21:08 and I drove home.
01:21:10 And I was kind of moping around the house,
01:21:12 and my wife said, what's wrong with you?
01:21:15 And I said, well, somebody called me an old fart
01:21:17 at the In-N-Out burger, and I was
01:21:20 feeling pretty bad about it.
01:21:22 And she said, well, you really shouldn't worry about it.
01:21:25 And I said, well, I do worry about it,
01:21:27 because I looked in the mirror and I saw an old man.
01:21:32 I saw an old man losing his hair.
01:21:35 I saw an old man putting on weight.
01:21:38 I saw an old man getting older.
01:21:42 And I said, honey, tell me something good about myself
01:21:44 so I feel better.
01:21:46 And she said, well, your eyesight is perfect.
01:21:48 Can't win.
01:21:58 Probably one of the most fun things
01:22:02 and the most gratifying things that I did when
01:22:05 I was at Channel 10 was at Christmas,
01:22:10 we adopted a first and a second grade at a school.
01:22:16 And of course, it was in a neighborhood,
01:22:19 in an area where people didn't have a lot.
01:22:25 And we all know that these neighborhoods exist,
01:22:30 and we all know that there are several levels that people
01:22:34 live on.
01:22:37 But sometimes it comes back and it kind of
01:22:39 slaps you in the face.
01:22:42 And at one of these particular get-togethers,
01:22:45 I was the master of ceremonies.
01:22:49 And a little girl in the first grade came over to me
01:22:54 and she said, Mr. Muncie, I want to thank you for my doll.
01:22:59 And I got down on one knee and I said, honey,
01:23:02 Santa Claus got you that doll.
01:23:06 And she looked me dead in the eye,
01:23:10 and she said, Santa doesn't come to our house.
01:23:15 And it caught me cold.
01:23:19 It stopped my heart, because we forget about people
01:23:25 that Santa Claus doesn't come to their house.
01:23:29 And normally, over the years, I've
01:23:33 written humor for this little part.
01:23:37 But this time I decided I wanted to run with what
01:23:41 that little girl had said to me.
01:23:44 I wrote that down.
01:23:46 And all these years later, I found it in my notes.
01:23:51 And that's what I want to talk to you about today.
01:23:55 And what I've written here is not only
01:23:57 something that takes her part and talks
01:24:01 a little bit about her life, but it's kind of an appeal
01:24:07 to all of you as well.
01:24:08 Santa doesn't come to our house on Christmas Eve or Christmas
01:24:15 Day.
01:24:17 Things I don't see on Christmas are toys or Santa's sleigh.
01:24:23 There are no gift wrap boxes, no bikes or baby dolls.
01:24:27 There are no fancy dishes, no soaps or big bath towels.
01:24:32 Nobody brings me rippled candy or fills me up with sweets.
01:24:37 I get no Christmas cookies or other sugar-filled treats.
01:24:43 I don't hear the holiday carolers bundled in scarves
01:24:47 of Christmas green and red.
01:24:50 I don't see neighborhood lighted displays.
01:24:54 I see the dark of night instead.
01:24:58 There are no Christmas parties.
01:25:00 There are no nativity scenes.
01:25:03 It's not because I don't love baby Jesus.
01:25:07 I just don't have the means.
01:25:10 Our clothes are all handmade, and two of us share a bed.
01:25:16 We don't buy gifts for Christmas.
01:25:19 We buy food and fuel instead.
01:25:23 Santa doesn't come to our house.
01:25:25 If he did, I could guarantee he wouldn't find any holiday
01:25:31 candles or colored bulbs, just my parents, my sister, and me.
01:25:37 That's the other side of Christmas,
01:25:41 and yes, there is one, a side we rarely see.
01:25:45 It's the sad side of Christmas with no Santa Claus, no gifts,
01:25:50 and of course, no Christmas tree.
01:25:54 That other side of Christmas is as lonely as it seems.
01:25:59 There is no money, barely food, and children without dreams.
01:26:06 But there is a way for you to make Christmas
01:26:09 be the magic that it truly seems by helping kids experience
01:26:16 the illusion that Santa brings.
01:26:19 Become a secret Santa by putting the mall wishing
01:26:26 tree on the gift list that you are preparing.
01:26:30 You could also contribute to Toys for Tots,
01:26:34 and of course, the season for sharing.
01:26:39 Remember, kids wait for Santa, wanting
01:26:44 to be part of the holiday fun.
01:26:47 Yes, children wait for Santa like a flower
01:26:50 waits for the morning sun.
01:26:53 So if you're a secret Santa with child gift ideas up your sleeve,
01:27:00 then I'll take just a moment here to remind you there are only
01:27:06 16 shopping days until Christmas Eve.
01:27:11 Thank you, everybody, and Merry Christmas.
01:27:13 [APPLAUSE]
01:27:16 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:27:29 That's another guy I love to pieces.
01:27:32 You're awesome.
01:27:33 I'm so excited that you're going to be doing that again.
01:27:35 Wonderful.
01:27:36 Good for you, Dave.
01:27:37 Good for you.
01:27:38 I have two nieces in college, and they're so lost.
01:27:43 They keep changing directions.
01:27:44 They don't know what they want to do.
01:27:46 They don't know what they want to be.
01:27:47 They're confused.
01:27:48 And all I can do is just say, go for your passion.
01:27:52 And I tell them, I say, get a copper bucket
01:27:56 and fill it with things that you can do,
01:27:58 things that you do well, things that you want to do well,
01:28:01 things that you can learn, things that you can share.
01:28:05 And you'll never not have a job.
01:28:08 You'll always do something that you love.
01:28:10 And one of them changed her major from--
01:28:14 I think it was forensic--
01:28:18 I don't know where they go and clean up dead bodies
01:28:21 after somebody's killed themselves.
01:28:23 I don't know what they're called.
01:28:25 She changed from that to cooking.
01:28:27 [LAUGHTER]
01:28:29 Which I was delighted about.
01:28:31 The other one, her sister, changed her major
01:28:33 and now wants to be a vet.
01:28:35 And I think that they're just doing it for their Auntie Jan.
01:28:38 I need help in the kitchen and out in the arena.
01:28:41 But that's not so.
01:28:42 But the next person that is appearing tonight,
01:28:47 she has a copper pot filled with all sorts of talent.
01:28:51 And I mean from teaching to reporting on television.
01:28:59 And now she's found this amazing career
01:29:02 as a mystery writer and short stories.
01:29:06 And she's getting recognition all over the country.
01:29:08 And when Lori Fagan came here a couple of years ago
01:29:11 and got in front of this mic to sing, I had never--
01:29:15 she belted. I mean, that voice was stunning.
01:29:17 I couldn't believe it.
01:29:18 So I'm so excited that she is back with us,
01:29:22 our mystery writer of the century.
01:29:24 Please welcome Lori Fagan.
01:29:26 [APPLAUSE]
01:29:29 Thank you so much.
01:29:42 And it is great to be back here for my third year now.
01:29:47 And I thank you all so for coming and supporting
01:29:52 the scholarships, which is why we're all here tonight
01:29:56 for the House of Broadcasting.
01:29:57 So they're always taking donations in addition
01:30:00 to the ticket sales.
01:30:01 So drop a few extra ones or tens or 20s back there,
01:30:06 and knowing that it all goes to a good cause.
01:30:09 By the way, I managed to leave a ring in the bathroom.
01:30:14 And if anybody finds it, it's a little oval ring,
01:30:17 got a couple of diamonds in it.
01:30:19 Please turn it in to somebody or see me.
01:30:23 I don't feel like I'm a living legend like Dave and Jan
01:30:27 and Mary Jo and Pat.
01:30:29 And however, I'm thrilled to be in this audience.
01:30:33 My first job in the industry was with KTAR Radio.
01:30:37 And I was actually still going to school at ASU
01:30:41 and got a job doing traffic reports for KTAR.
01:30:45 And I was the afternoon shift.
01:30:48 Joyce Dean did the morning.
01:30:50 We even had our own billboard at one point, Joyce and Lori
01:30:53 up in the air.
01:30:54 That was very exciting.
01:30:56 I worked for Preston Westmoreland on his show
01:30:59 at one point.
01:30:59 And then television was calling.
01:31:01 So I went back to my home state of Iowa,
01:31:04 got a job in Waterloo as the NBC affiliate television
01:31:09 station there as a reporter, photographer, editor, anchor
01:31:13 about anything they wanted me to do.
01:31:15 We need somebody to shoot Iowa State football games.
01:31:18 I'll do it.
01:31:19 Just keep the ball in the shot, is what they said.
01:31:22 OK, I can do that.
01:31:24 So I had a great time with that.
01:31:26 Got learned a lot.
01:31:28 But remembered why I left Iowa in the first place.
01:31:31 I said, I got to go back to Arizona.
01:31:33 So got a job with the city of Phoenix.
01:31:36 And it was in the public information office.
01:31:38 And my buddy, Bob-- where are you?
01:31:41 Bob Brink, who was a city photographer at the time,
01:31:45 he and I worked in the public information office.
01:31:47 His beautiful wife, Francie, is here tonight, too.
01:31:50 And I was doing slide shows originally.
01:31:55 But then I found a camera in another department
01:31:57 and said, let's do video.
01:31:59 So I founded the Phoenix Channel,
01:32:01 ran that for about seven years.
01:32:02 And then Mary Jo took that over after that.
01:32:05 So now, yes, I'm writing crime fiction mysteries.
01:32:07 I'm doing some art and still get to do some singing.
01:32:10 So thrilled to be with you all here tonight.
01:32:13 Let's do a little fun thing.
01:32:15 [MUSIC - "FIRE"]
01:32:22 Oh, the weather outside is frightful.
01:32:32 But the fire is so delightful.
01:32:35 And since we've no place to go, let it snow, let it snow,
01:32:41 let it snow.
01:32:43 It doesn't show signs of stopping.
01:32:46 And I brought some corn for popping.
01:32:50 The lights are turned way down low.
01:32:53 Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
01:32:57 When we finally kiss goodnight, how
01:33:01 I'll hate going out in the storm.
01:33:04 But if you really hold me tight, all the way home I'll be warm.
01:33:12 The fire is slowly dying.
01:33:15 But my dear, we're still goodbying.
01:33:19 And as long as you love me so, let it snow, let it snow,
01:33:24 let it snow.
01:33:26 [MUSIC - "FIRE"]
01:33:30 Frank Smith on the keyboard.
01:33:54 When we finally kiss goodnight, how
01:33:58 I will hate going out in the storm.
01:34:01 But if you really hold me tight, all the way home I'll be warm.
01:34:09 The fire is slowly dying.
01:34:13 And my dear, we're still goodbying.
01:34:16 But as long as you love me so, let it snow, let it snow,
01:34:22 let it snow.
01:34:24 Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
01:34:27 Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
01:34:32 [APPLAUSE]
01:34:42 Thank you.
01:34:46 Thank you so much.
01:34:46 So this next song, the story goes that it
01:34:50 was written by Mel Torme.
01:34:51 Again, this is also one of my favorite holiday songs.
01:34:56 The Arizona Biltmore claims that he wrote it there
01:35:00 in the middle of July.
01:35:02 And he says that he turned up the air conditioning real high
01:35:08 to get in the mood for this song.
01:35:12 [MUSIC - "FIRE"]
01:35:15 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:35:19 Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
01:35:33 jackfruits nipping at your nose.
01:35:41 Yuletide carols being sung in the lane by folks
01:35:48 dressed up like Eskimos.
01:35:50 Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
01:36:01 will help to make the season bright.
01:36:10 Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
01:36:16 will find it hard to sleep tonight.
01:36:20 They know that Santa's on his way.
01:36:30 He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
01:36:38 And every mother's child is going
01:36:42 to spy to see if reindeer really know how to fly.
01:36:53 And so I'm offering this simple phrase to kids from 1 to 92.
01:37:08 Although it's been said many times, many ways,
01:37:16 Merry Christmas to you.
01:37:20 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:24 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:27 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:31 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:34 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:38 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:41 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:44 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:47 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:50 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:37:53 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:38:22 They know that Santa's on his way.
01:38:29 And he's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
01:38:37 And every mother's child is going
01:38:42 to spy to see if reindeer really know how to fly.
01:38:53 And so I'm offering this simple phrase to all you kids from 1
01:39:03 to 102.
01:39:08 Although it's been said so many times, so many ways,
01:39:16 Merry Christmas.
01:39:19 Have a very Merry Christmas.
01:39:21 Merry Christmas to you.
01:39:30 [PIANO PLAYING]
01:39:33 [APPLAUSE]
01:39:41 Thank you.
01:39:42 Thank you so much.
01:39:43 Teresa, you're going to give me a hand here.
01:39:45 OK, a little audience participation.
01:39:48 Yes, it's a repeat of a song that Mike did.
01:39:50 Sorry, but I've got props.
01:39:55 OK?
01:39:56 So I want you to jingle some of these, if you would.
01:39:59 We're going to do a little Jose Feliciano.
01:40:02 Jose Feliciano, yeah.
01:40:05 Give us-- yeah, go ahead.
01:40:06 Give us a start.
01:40:08 If you've got keys or something, you can jangle them too.
01:40:11 I know we have key fobs.
01:40:12 That doesn't work so well.
01:40:13 But jingle, jingle along with it.
01:40:16 Feliz Navidad.
01:40:18 Oh, it was my mariachis.
01:40:20 Feliz Navidad.
01:40:21 Feliz Navidad.
01:40:26 Prospero año y felicidad.
01:40:31 I want to wish you a merry Christmas.
01:40:34 I want to wish you a merry Christmas.
01:40:38 I want to wish you a merry Christmas
01:40:41 from the bottom of my heart.
01:40:46 Feliz Navidad.
01:40:47 Feliz Navidad.
01:40:51 Feliz Navidad.
01:40:55 Prospero año y felicidad.
01:41:00 I want to wish you a merry Christmas.
01:41:04 I want to wish you a merry Christmas.
01:41:08 I want to wish you a merry Christmas
01:41:11 from the bottom of my heart.
01:41:15 Cha, cha, cha.
01:41:16 Thank you so much.
01:41:21 Thank you very much.
01:41:22 [APPLAUSE]
01:41:25 Lori Fagan.
01:41:27 Here you go.
01:41:28 Have a mic.
01:41:29 Tall women have no respect for me.
01:41:32 [LAUGHTER]
01:41:32 Oh, are you kidding?
01:41:34 I love you.
01:41:36 Thank you so much.
01:41:37 Once again, a real professional, Lori Fagan.
01:41:41 [APPLAUSE]
01:41:43 On the subject of professionalism
01:41:46 in the world of entertainment and media,
01:41:50 probably most of you have at one time or another
01:41:53 heard the phrase, I'm sorry about the problems
01:41:58 of the previous program, but it was a technical difficulty
01:42:03 beyond our ability to fix it.
01:42:06 Well, last year, after David Miller spent all of this time
01:42:12 putting together a remarkable production,
01:42:16 last year, for those of you who were here,
01:42:18 you may recognize the fact that it didn't go quickly or as well
01:42:24 as it might have.
01:42:25 There were a few problems.
01:42:26 There are theatrical electronics.
01:42:28 And we weren't able to view the video in all its David Miller
01:42:32 glory.
01:42:33 Now, they have since--
01:42:36 it says they have since been replaced.
01:42:39 But actually, they've since been replaced with new equipment.
01:42:43 Thank you.
01:42:44 I appreciate that.
01:42:46 We're going to present the video again
01:42:47 so you can enjoy the creative skills of David Miller.
01:42:50 And if you haven't seen his fantastic talent before,
01:42:55 you're really in it for a special treat.
01:42:57 All I want for Christmas is created, produced,
01:43:00 and composed by the amazingly talented David Miller.
01:43:04 Please enjoy.
01:43:05 [APPLAUSE]
01:43:08 Hi, everybody.
01:43:09 I hope you're having a wonderful holiday season.
01:43:12 Christmas is a terrific time for us
01:43:13 to take a look at the previous year
01:43:15 and take stock of our lives.
01:43:17 For a lot of folks, this has been a really tough year.
01:43:21 For some, it's been a really tough few years.
01:43:24 I know it's been a very long time since a lot of us
01:43:27 have been able to see each other in person.
01:43:29 And so as I think about the true meaning of Christmas
01:43:33 and each and every one of you, I realize
01:43:36 that all I want for Christmas are presents.
01:43:42 Let's go shopping, shall we?
01:43:44 Wow, a robot vacuum cleaner and a 180-inch TV.
01:43:49 It's huge.
01:43:50 It may grow.
01:43:51 A floating record player and a home in Tuscany.
01:43:55 Is that Italy?
01:43:56 Right on the beach.
01:43:58 This year has been so challenging
01:44:01 for my whole family.
01:44:04 So a hot tub boat or a solar yacht seem quite fair to me.
01:44:11 Because all I want for Christmas are presents
01:44:15 underneath the tree.
01:44:18 All I want for Christmas are presents,
01:44:21 presents from you to me.
01:44:25 I also accept gift cards, Venmo, and Apple Pay.
01:44:29 Hey, it's Paul McCartney's base and a smokeless fire pit.
01:44:34 That's hot.
01:44:34 That's practical.
01:44:36 A platinum money clip with all the Benjamins that fit.
01:44:40 Pricey.
01:44:41 I'm worth it.
01:44:42 You can keep your figgy pudding and your mistletoe.
01:44:49 An electric truck or a worldwide cruise seem more apropos.
01:44:56 Because all I want for Christmas are presents.
01:44:59 Presents.
01:44:59 Stacked up around the tree.
01:45:03 All I want for Christmas are presents,
01:45:06 presents from you to me.
01:45:09 Don't worry.
01:45:10 I'll send you my Amazon wish list.
01:45:14 Now socks are not a present, nor is underwear.
01:45:21 Stuff you'd buy me anyway doesn't really say you care.
01:45:28 I love the way your eyes light up when I open luxury.
01:45:34 But I love you most when you spend the most.
01:45:38 So don't cheap out on me.
01:45:40 Because all I want for Christmas are presents.
01:45:48 Presents.
01:45:48 Stacked to the top of the tree.
01:45:52 All I want for Christmas are presents, presents from you.
01:45:57 And you, and you, and you.
01:45:58 Presents from you.
01:46:00 Seriously, you are really going to have
01:46:06 to increase your credit limit.
01:46:08 To me.
01:46:08 Merry Christmas, everybody.
01:46:13 [APPLAUSE]
01:46:17 The most--
01:46:23 [INAUDIBLE]
01:46:26 [INAUDIBLE]
01:46:27 [INAUDIBLE]
01:46:29 [LAUGHTER]
01:46:31 You scared me more.
01:46:32 You yelled at me.
01:46:34 David Miller, the most, the most incredible musician, composer,
01:46:40 talent I've met.
01:46:43 David Miller, where are you with your little Santa hat?
01:46:45 [INAUDIBLE]
01:46:46 David, come here.
01:46:48 Come here.
01:46:48 Come here.
01:46:50 I don't-- oh.
01:46:53 [APPLAUSE]
01:46:56 It played.
01:47:01 It actually worked.
01:47:03 It's a Christmas miracle.
01:47:06 I don't know how to fix it.
01:47:07 Oh, let me get that for you.
01:47:09 You're the technical guy here.
01:47:12 David, you are amazing.
01:47:14 I'm so glad we ran it again.
01:47:16 And I'm glad there were technical difficulties,
01:47:18 because we could run it again.
01:47:19 I'd like to see it every single year.
01:47:21 You're amazing.
01:47:23 And you're also Mr. Christmas.
01:47:24 I worked with David the year that he had his first baby.
01:47:28 And this guy walked--
01:47:30 you were like a kid in a candy store.
01:47:32 You were so excited.
01:47:35 I still am.
01:47:36 How old is the baby?
01:47:37 My baby is now a father.
01:47:40 Oh, my god.
01:47:42 I think he's 34.
01:47:43 And my granddaughter is a year or 15 months old now.
01:47:47 And she's adorable.
01:47:48 I've got videos I can show.
01:47:49 Can we get it on the line?
01:47:50 Yes, please do.
01:47:51 Yes, yes, please do.
01:47:54 Merry Christmas.
01:47:55 Thank you.
01:47:55 We love you.
01:47:56 You're wonderful.
01:47:58 So talented.
01:48:00 So talented.
01:48:01 [APPLAUSE]
01:48:05 I wanted to remind-- why is it?
01:48:07 I want to remind everybody that we've got so much entertainment
01:48:15 coming up.
01:48:16 So if you have any plans to go home in the next four hours,
01:48:19 forget it.
01:48:21 Because Mary Jo West is coming up in just a little while.
01:48:24 Of course, Mike Chamberlain.
01:48:25 One of my absolute favorite people from Channel 5,
01:48:30 that Wally and Lad and I got a chance
01:48:32 to work with for years and years and years.
01:48:35 Great storyteller, terrific cook.
01:48:37 Cooking with Rita was a big success on television here.
01:48:42 She had stars coming in that she interviewed.
01:48:45 And you'd think that that would be enough for anybody's lifetime
01:48:49 career.
01:48:51 But no.
01:48:52 One day she came by, knocked on the door, and said,
01:48:55 I'm not going to do television anymore.
01:48:57 I've got a couple of other things.
01:49:00 And a couple of other things included
01:49:02 being one of the most in-demand public speakers
01:49:07 anywhere in the country, not only live, but also on PBS.
01:49:12 And was a superstar as a speaker on a variety of subjects.
01:49:18 And Wally and Lad and I said, isn't that terrific?
01:49:20 She found something to do.
01:49:24 And then we found out that, including
01:49:27 with the speaking arrangements that she
01:49:30 had as an in-demand personality, she
01:49:35 became the president of Arbonne Cosmetics International.
01:49:41 And after that fun time, she decided to come back to us
01:49:46 and do Christmas shows like this one.
01:49:48 Rita Davenport is in the room.
01:49:52 Rita.
01:49:53 [APPLAUSE]
01:49:55 Thank you, thank you, thank you.
01:49:59 I love you.
01:50:01 Jan, do me a favor.
01:50:03 Don't be kissing him.
01:50:05 Have you ever listened to Dr. Ruth before?
01:50:08 If you keep kissing him, he's going to get a stiff neck.
01:50:11 [LAUGHTER]
01:50:13 OK, some of you don't get it, but that's OK.
01:50:19 Well, Merry Christmas, and what a fun group.
01:50:22 And I brought some notes so you all
01:50:24 would think I can read and write.
01:50:25 But my husband is here, David.
01:50:28 And we dated, let's see, six years.
01:50:33 And I told him that I was pregnant.
01:50:36 And he said, we haven't had sex.
01:50:41 And I said, that's exactly what Joseph said to Mary.
01:50:47 I am grateful for being raised in Tennessee.
01:50:52 Some of you forgot to tell you this,
01:50:54 but according to Dolly Parton, I am the green-eyed Jolene.
01:51:00 She was on my show, and she invited
01:51:03 me to come backstage when she performed that night.
01:51:06 She said to the crew, come over.
01:51:07 I want you all to meet somebody really important.
01:51:09 This is me and my daughter-in-law,
01:51:10 and I was looking, well, who is she talking about?
01:51:12 She said, you all have always wondered
01:51:13 who the real green-eyed Jolene is.
01:51:15 Well, it's really Rita Davenport.
01:51:17 And nobody looks at my green eyes.
01:51:19 They look instead at my flat chest and say, bless her heart.
01:51:24 But anyway, yeah, I dated Carl Dean, Dolly's husband,
01:51:29 of 58 years, I think, something like that.
01:51:32 David and I have been married 57-- about 58 years.
01:51:35 And I told Dolly, I said, Dolly, we dated,
01:51:38 but we never did anything.
01:51:40 She said, oh, Rita.
01:51:42 She said, I know.
01:51:43 She said, I was his first.
01:51:46 And I said, oh, girl, you're so naive.
01:51:48 But anyway, as far as I know, she might have been his first.
01:51:51 Anyway, it's Christmas time.
01:51:53 Raised in poverty in Tennessee was my gift.
01:51:58 I realized there was not really a Santa Claus when
01:52:01 I got a old rusty bicycle, y'all, pitiful.
01:52:05 And I said, no Santa Claus would give that to a kid.
01:52:08 Of course, I was 14 years old, and I still
01:52:10 didn't know there wasn't a real Santa Claus.
01:52:11 But anyway, that was my wake-up call.
01:52:14 And I'm hearing about little kids now
01:52:16 that when Santa Claus-- they get in Santa Claus' lap and say,
01:52:19 well, what do you want for Christmas?
01:52:21 And a little child will say, well,
01:52:23 didn't you get my email, Santa?
01:52:24 Because that's what's going on in the world today.
01:52:26 It's quite different.
01:52:27 And then I heard about a broadcaster
01:52:29 that was out with a group.
01:52:30 And there was this one little girl.
01:52:32 And he said, don't you want to go-- they
01:52:34 had a big holiday parade.
01:52:35 Don't you want to go over and talk to Santa Claus?
01:52:37 And this little girl, about six years old,
01:52:39 said, that's not really Santa Claus.
01:52:41 He's at the mall right now.
01:52:43 That's where Santa Claus is right now.
01:52:45 I do know, though, that this is a time that we all have.
01:52:51 It's so special.
01:52:53 And we're grateful to have this time together.
01:52:55 And I think that knowing about a grandmother,
01:52:58 that every year she always got gifts for her kids.
01:53:02 But with advanced age, she realized
01:53:04 she couldn't go out and shop and do like she used to do.
01:53:07 So she wrote each of her grandkids a note.
01:53:10 And she said, because of my age and health,
01:53:13 I just can't shop like I used to.
01:53:17 And she wrote everybody out a check.
01:53:19 And she wrote in the card.
01:53:20 She said, so just get your own gift.
01:53:23 Well, two or three weeks later, she
01:53:25 hadn't heard from any of her grandkids.
01:53:27 And she thought, well, that was sad that I sent them a gift.
01:53:30 They didn't even check.
01:53:31 And they didn't even call me and tell me what they got,
01:53:34 if they liked it or anything.
01:53:36 So she started writing out her bills.
01:53:38 And she opened up her checkbook.
01:53:39 And she had never put a check in any of the cards.
01:53:43 They were all empty.
01:53:44 Just get your own gift.
01:53:45 Made a big difference when they saw that note.
01:53:48 Just get your own gift.
01:53:50 And we have kids at this time of year
01:53:53 that sometimes they're excited, sometimes not so much.
01:53:57 And I heard about the parents of twin boys.
01:54:01 And one of them was optimistic and always
01:54:04 excited about everything.
01:54:06 One was negative about everything.
01:54:07 So the parents took the kids to a psychiatrist
01:54:13 to see what they could do to help with these children
01:54:16 and their different personalities.
01:54:17 They put the very pessimistic child--
01:54:20 he was about eight years old-- they put him in a room
01:54:22 with all these toys, all kinds of toys, Nintendo's bicycles,
01:54:25 anything a child would want.
01:54:26 And the child just sat there, just miserable.
01:54:30 And they took the other little boy,
01:54:31 who was always so positive.
01:54:33 They put him in another room with just a floor
01:54:35 full of manure.
01:54:37 So the parents went outside looking
01:54:39 in to see what the activities were.
01:54:40 And the little kid that was negative just sat there.
01:54:43 The other kid that was in the room full of manure,
01:54:45 he was throwing the manure up in the air.
01:54:47 He was so excited.
01:54:48 And the parents went in there and said, Johnny,
01:54:50 what are you so excited about?
01:54:52 He said, well, with all this manure,
01:54:55 there's got to be a pony somewhere.
01:54:57 So look for the pony, folks, and have a Merry Christmas
01:54:59 and Happy New Year.
01:55:00 I love you all.
01:55:01 [APPLAUSE]
01:55:05 It's an evening of Christmas celebration,
01:55:07 an evening of pioneers.
01:55:09 You've gotten a chance to meet so many people who
01:55:11 have made breakthroughs that nobody had done before
01:55:15 in that specific field.
01:55:16 You're about to meet another one.
01:55:18 Southern Girl says, I loved musical theater
01:55:22 when she was in college and did it.
01:55:24 I loved broadcasting.
01:55:26 And she majored in that.
01:55:28 And I love that.
01:55:29 And she did it a little bit.
01:55:31 And then she came out and did it here a lot.
01:55:36 She wanted to be an anchorwoman.
01:55:37 And everybody told her, no, no.
01:55:40 That's for men.
01:55:41 There's only anchormen.
01:55:44 There's no such thing as an anchorwoman at that time
01:55:48 in television virtually everywhere.
01:55:51 And she didn't listen.
01:55:53 And Mary Jo West became a giant news person at Channel 10.
01:55:59 And she continued on with musical theater, though.
01:56:02 And they asked her to do Maria von Trapp
01:56:05 in The Sound of Music in a Phoenix Theater production.
01:56:08 And it was so enormously successful
01:56:11 that she virtually saved Phoenix Theater financially
01:56:15 with a number of people who bought tickets
01:56:18 in that performance that moved to Phoenix Theater.
01:56:22 Ladies and gentlemen, please, a big heartwarming well-deserved
01:56:26 welcome for the heart of Phoenix Television, Mary Jo West.
01:56:30 [APPLAUSE]
01:56:33 Hello, everyone.
01:56:45 I know the hour is late, and I won't be too long.
01:56:48 I'm going to speak for about three or four minutes.
01:56:52 OK.
01:56:53 And then-- you think I know my way around a microphone.
01:56:57 And then I'm going to sing one song
01:56:59 and be joined in that song by the wonderful Lori Fagan, who
01:57:03 we heard earlier, and the wonderful Frank
01:57:05 Smith, our fabulous pianist.
01:57:07 If we went around the room tonight,
01:57:12 we would hear all about your favorite Christmases.
01:57:16 We heard some already tonight.
01:57:18 But I'm going to sing one song.
01:57:20 We heard some already tonight.
01:57:22 Buddy was telling us and others.
01:57:24 And then if we went around the room again,
01:57:26 we'd hear about some of our worst Christmases.
01:57:30 My favorite Christmas was the Christmas of '68.
01:57:34 And I had the opportunity to go on a USO tour
01:57:37 and entertain our troops in Greenland and Iceland, Thule
01:57:41 Air Force Base.
01:57:43 And my favorite Christmas was getting to sing to a sea
01:57:46 of faces, "Silent Night."
01:57:49 My worst Christmas-- and I'm bringing this up
01:57:51 because we're being televised.
01:57:55 And sometimes the holidays can be the worst thing we can do.
01:58:00 And I want you to know that these people up here tonight
01:58:02 who are famous and still are, they've had bad times, too.
01:58:06 So if you're feeling badly tonight,
01:58:08 there is something you can do.
01:58:10 I know my worst Christmas was many years ago.
01:58:13 And the week before Christmas, I got a really bad broken heart
01:58:18 by someone.
01:58:20 A friend came over, put my tree up.
01:58:23 And I decided that on Christmas Eve, I made plans.
01:58:26 I called ahead to CAS, Central Arizona Shelter Services,
01:58:31 let them know at 9 o'clock I would be there.
01:58:33 And I brought my four-year-old.
01:58:36 And we climbed into bed, the bottom of a bunk bed,
01:58:39 with a homeless woman and her two children.
01:58:42 And we sang, and we read books, and we gave gifts.
01:58:46 And I left that night.
01:58:47 I had a broken heart, but she had a broken spirit.
01:58:50 What I'm going to do tonight is tell you, if you're watching,
01:58:57 if you're feeling like you need to talk to someone,
01:59:00 you can call there now, thanks to broadcasting and all
01:59:04 the hard work that was done, a special number called 988,
01:59:08 if you would like to talk to someone
01:59:10 and get you through the holidays.
01:59:12 And don't hurt yourself.
01:59:14 Well, there is a woman who hurt herself, tried to.
01:59:17 Her name was Jill Jackson.
01:59:21 And Jill Jackson, in 1944, was living in California.
01:59:26 She'd been in foster homes.
01:59:28 She had no parents.
01:59:30 And she decided to try to kill herself.
01:59:33 Well, Jill Jackson fortunately failed in killing herself.
01:59:39 And she found her faith, and she got help.
01:59:42 And I'll be darned if the next decade that came along, 1955,
01:59:48 she married.
01:59:49 And Jill Jackson, in all of her darkness,
01:59:53 wrote a song that we sing every Christmas that brings love
01:59:59 and light to all of us.
02:00:01 So out of her darkness came a song.
02:00:05 She and her husband went to California
02:00:08 to a group of high school kids from all over California.
02:00:12 And they went on a mountaintop, and they tried out a song.
02:00:17 And it was called "Let There Be Peace on Earth."
02:00:20 And those high school kids took it back home
02:00:23 to their small towns.
02:00:25 And it spread throughout the country,
02:00:27 and it spread throughout the world.
02:00:30 And tonight, I would like to sing that song for you,
02:00:34 because we need peace more than ever before.
02:00:37 We need peace to start here.
02:00:39 And in just a moment, we're also going
02:00:41 to have the beautiful Lori Fagan join us.
02:00:44 [MUSIC - LORI FAGAN, "LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH"]
02:00:47 Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
02:01:04 Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.
02:01:15 With God as our Father, brothers all are we.
02:01:28 Let me walk with my sister in perfect harmony.
02:01:36 Let peace begin with me.
02:01:45 Let this be the moment now.
02:01:52 With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow
02:02:03 to take each moment and live each moment in peace
02:02:10 eternally.
02:02:15 Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
02:02:27 Frank Smith.
02:02:28 [MUSIC - FRANK SMITH, "WITH GOD AS OUR FATHER"]
02:02:51 With God as our Father, brothers all are we.
02:03:03 Let me walk with my sisters in perfect harmony.
02:03:17 Let peace begin with me.
02:03:23 Let this be the moment now.
02:03:29 With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow
02:03:40 to take each moment and live each moment in peace
02:03:49 eternally.
02:03:49 Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin.
02:04:06 And let it begin.
02:04:11 And let it begin with me.
02:04:21 [APPLAUSE]
02:04:32 [MUSIC - FRANK SMITH, "WITH GOD AS OUR FATHER"]
02:04:34 Been doing this for a lot of years here,
02:04:47 and that was a moment I've never seen before.
02:04:52 And Mary Jo, Laurie, thank you so much.
02:04:57 [APPLAUSE]
02:05:01 And thanks to the guy who started it all.
02:05:06 Excuse me, do we have a gentleman
02:05:09 who would like to come up and close the evening?
02:05:13 And it's--
02:05:14 Well, I started it.
02:05:15 10 years ago, right?
02:05:20 [APPLAUSE]
02:05:23 Hello.
02:05:26 [INAUDIBLE]
02:05:29 I just have one quick announcement.
02:05:33 Somebody went to the ladies' room
02:05:35 and may have left some bling in there.
02:05:38 And so check--
02:05:39 Laurie, Laurie, she's all around.
02:05:41 They have--
02:05:41 Laurie, she lost her ring.
02:05:43 We found it, Laurie.
02:05:44 You found it?
02:05:45 We found it.
02:05:46 [APPLAUSE]
02:05:48 Let there be bling on earth, and let it begin with me.
02:05:55 Well, would all the entertainers come back?
02:05:59 Laurie and Jan, come on up.
02:06:00 Pat, you can sing too.
02:06:03 Everybody and Dave, come on up.
02:06:07 Don't be shy.
02:06:08 Mary Jo, oh my gosh, look at this.
02:06:11 They are legends in broadcasting.
02:06:14 They are.
02:06:14 [APPLAUSE]
02:06:17 [GUITAR STRUMMING]
02:06:21 [LAUGHTER]
02:06:22 Yeah, David, come up.
02:06:25 Dave and David, that would be a good radio show.
02:06:28 [GUITAR STRUMMING]
02:06:30 Rita, I steal so many of your jokes and use them on stage.
02:06:35 [LAUGHTER]
02:06:38 We have done this every year, and we'll do it again tonight.
02:06:41 We always end with what I think is the greatest
02:06:45 musical spiritual that has ever been written.
02:06:47 It's "Silent Night."
02:06:50 I've told you the story before, but don't stop me,
02:06:52 because I love telling this story.
02:06:54 This song was written over 200 years ago
02:06:57 by an Austrian composer.
02:06:59 And originally, "Silent Night" was in German.
02:07:03 And this composer went down to the cathedral
02:07:07 on Christmas Eve afternoon to rehearse the song one last time
02:07:13 on the cathedral organ.
02:07:16 And he had built the entire surface around this song.
02:07:19 And he went to practice it.
02:07:21 He pressed down on the keys of the organ,
02:07:24 and nothing came out.
02:07:25 It was silent.
02:07:27 It was broken.
02:07:28 He didn't know what to do.
02:07:30 But as the story goes, a late afternoon beam of sunshine
02:07:34 came through a stained glass window
02:07:37 and came to rest upon a six-string guitar
02:07:39 like I'm playing tonight.
02:07:41 And he thought to himself, if that's not a sign from above,
02:07:45 I don't know what is.
02:07:47 And although every philharmonic orchestra has done it,
02:07:49 every famous singer has sung it, but it
02:07:52 was given birth 200 years ago on the simple guitar
02:07:57 like I'm playing tonight.
02:07:58 So I hope I do the guitar some justice when
02:08:01 it comes time to sing.
02:08:02 I hope you'll all join me in what
02:08:04 I think is the greatest Christmas hymn ever written,
02:08:07 "Silent Night."
02:08:08 [MUSIC - "SILENT NIGHT"]
02:08:11 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:08:15 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:08:18 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:08:45 Silent night, holy night.
02:08:52 All is calm.
02:08:54 How many sing it?
02:08:55 All is bright.
02:08:58 Round yon virgin, mother and child.
02:09:04 Holy infant, so tender and mild.
02:09:10 Sleep in heavenly peace.
02:09:17 Sleep in heavenly peace.
02:09:20 Let me try that guitar again.
02:09:22 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:09:26 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:09:29 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:09:33 Adjust our voices.
02:09:58 Silent night, holy night.
02:10:05 All is calm.
02:10:08 All is bright.
02:10:12 Round yon virgin, mother and child.
02:10:18 Holy infant, so tender and mild.
02:10:24 Sleep in heavenly peace.
02:10:31 Sleep in heavenly peace.
02:10:34 One more time on the guitar.
02:10:36 This one's for the composer 200 years ago.
02:10:39 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:10:43 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:10:46 [GUITAR PLAYING]
02:11:15 Merry Christmas, everybody.
02:11:17 [APPLAUSE]
02:11:20 Hold on.
02:11:21 Hold on just a second.
02:11:24 I don't think anybody up here knows
02:11:27 what it is that's causing me to stop the proceedings.
02:11:32 But you won't want to miss this.
02:11:34 Maury Helle, please join us.
02:11:37 Maury Helle, who started this 10 years ago with Mike Chamberlain.
02:11:43 Maury's the one-- Maury's the one
02:11:46 who has to make the phone calls to find out
02:11:49 if people like this, as busy as they are,
02:11:52 can possibly make it for another Christmas show.
02:11:56 And you arranged for the location, all of these things.
02:12:00 And Maury, there are some folks who I believe
02:12:04 would like to thank you in a special way.
02:12:06 If you will.
02:12:10 I really hate being in front of a crowd.
02:12:14 But Maury, we love you.
02:12:15 And the last 10 years have been so wonderful
02:12:18 that you've done with this--
02:12:21 sorry-- with this Christmas concert.
02:12:24 It's been you who's put this all together, producing, directing,
02:12:28 and helping to raise almost $20,000 over 10 years
02:12:32 for our scholarship fund.
02:12:34 So thank you.
02:12:35 [APPLAUSE]
02:12:39 Thank you.
02:12:40 [APPLAUSE]
02:12:43 Sometimes there are just no words besides thank you.
02:12:49 And that's what I give to you.
02:12:51 [APPLAUSE]
02:12:53 And while you're picking up all of your Apple prizes,
02:12:57 there's cake in the back to help celebrate, too.
02:13:00 Thank you.
02:13:01 Yes, sir.
02:13:02 [INAUDIBLE]
02:13:03 Just one more question.
02:13:05 I'm sorry.
02:13:05 I ain't kissing you.
02:13:07 Pat is asking me for one more chorus of "Silent Night."
02:13:11 Yes?
02:13:11 All right.
02:13:12 All right.
02:13:13 Stan got in line.
02:13:14 Look at Pat's cheek.
02:13:16 He can't-- you know Duffy.
02:13:18 He can't go home like this.
02:13:19 Look.
02:13:20 [LAUGHTER]
02:13:23 He's got lipstick all over you.
02:13:24 [LAUGHTER]
02:13:26 Guilty.
02:13:28 All right.
02:13:29 Let's end it with one more chorus of "Silent Night."
02:13:32 And again, thank you all for being here,
02:13:35 for to support the House of Broadcasting,
02:13:38 to all these amazing people in front of you
02:13:41 that donate their time and their talent.
02:13:43 And thank you, and God bless you.
02:13:46 And I wish you the happiest holiday ever.
02:13:50 Silent night, holy night.
02:13:57 All is calm, all is bright.
02:14:04 Round yon virgin, mother and child.
02:14:11 Holy infant so tender and mild.
02:14:17 Sleep in heavenly peace.
02:14:21 Sleep in heavenly peace.
