00:00 The mood however, even though they lost to Buffalo, the mood in this building is buoyant.
00:05 Yeah, because they clinched playoffs. That helps.
00:07 That helps and maybe it's because Jean and Charlotte and the staff decorate this place like it's the North Pole.
00:14 You actually were the one that triggered a conversation with the Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy about
00:20 first of all dealing with your family and trying to have fun with it at Christmas, but then also trying to juggle
00:27 the very important coaching job that you have with
00:30 trying to also make sure that you're there when the kids are over in the presents.
00:34 And how do you really balance that and that's why I asked him.
00:36 It's like this is your busiest time of the year. This is the crunch time for you.
00:41 But it's also a really great time for the family.
00:44 And I know him and his family are so tight and he complimented his wife Jessica saying it's good
00:50 to have Jessica buying you the presents. Yeah. And he said his kids do well.
00:54 Yeah, and then that also he thought it was really important for all coaches not just his family to be with their families on Christmas Day.
01:01 Specifically Christmas morning for that Christmas morning feeling.
01:03 Because we're a full-service show and because I'm of McCarthy's generation
01:09 I can tell you that this isn't just about coaches or players or administrator. This is probably about all of us.
01:15 We were you know, we pretty devoted to what we do here.
01:21 But you really do. In fact, we just had a big conversation.
01:24 What are we going to do all Christmas weekend on Cowboys SI and CowboysSI.com?
01:31 And the NFL work that we do and the NBA and you know, should we make special accommodations?
01:36 And I said I don't mean to be a jerk, but if you sign up to be a sports writer
01:41 you sign up to work on holidays. Just the way it is. So anybody that can't let me know and you're fired.
01:48 No, no.
01:50 But it really is trying to find some balance and it's foundational if you're a football coach because there is a temptation
01:59 after a loss to say I'm gonna I'm honey. I'm gonna stay at the office one more hour.
02:04 I'm gonna watch one more bit of film or as coaches of a previous generation once did a terrible idea.
02:11 It sounded so manly. I sleep on the couch at the office all night.
02:16 But why? Your house is right there.
02:19 Why don't you just go home and sleep on the couch for three hours and come on back to work?
02:23 But it all it sounded so good.
02:24 And of course you don't have anymore
02:27 the issue of coaching burnout that used to Dick Vermeule and others of his time
02:32 because you're just trying to do too much. So a little family balance a little bit.
02:36 Not too much because also a man of my age can also say just like he I'm sure does with his wife.
02:42 Okay, that's enough for me. I gotta go.
02:45 You have a you can clean up you you pick up the boxes and trash. I gotta go back to work.
02:50 Funny how the I gotta go back to work always happens during the cleanup.
02:53 Well, it's a good it's a good husband trick, which you're probably quite aware of.
02:57 The reason he doesn't load the dishwasher is because he's fooled you into thinking he doesn't know how.
03:03 I don't know. What do you mean? I put it upside down. I don't I don't know and the next thing you know
03:08 you're loading the dishwasher.
03:10 [laughs]
