00:00 Do you know that throughout the year,
00:02 you spend the equivalent of more than one entire day on the toilet?
00:07 But what if, instead of spreading that time throughout the whole year,
00:12 you just got it over with in one single day?
00:15 What if you only went to the bathroom once a year?
00:19 How much poop does a person produce in a year?
00:23 What would sitting on the toilet for this long do to your butt?
00:28 And how would your colon handle something like this?
00:32 This is WHAT IF, and here's what would happen if you pooped once a year.
00:39 It's been reported that some people have withheld going to the washroom for up to one month.
00:45 Refraining from going this long can result in some severe health issues.
00:50 Some have even had surgery because of it.
00:53 But what if, instead of a measly 30 days,
00:57 you held in your poop for 365?
01:01 Before we get started on this journey,
01:03 we should deconstruct exactly how much humans go to the bathroom.
01:08 Throughout your life, you'll spend nearly 92 days on the toilet.
01:13 That's right, over the course of a week,
01:15 you might spend anywhere from 90 minutes to almost two hours doing your business.
01:21 But within that time, how much feces might you be evacuating?
01:26 Well, by the time you reach age 65,
01:29 the average person will have pooped over 9,500 kg (3,000 lb) of feces.
01:35 That's about the same weight as three trucks combined.
01:40 So if we're only letting you do this once a year,
01:43 you would produce 146 kg (3,000 lb) of feces.
01:48 That's more than an adult panda weighs.
01:52 Now that we know how much poop we're going to get rid of,
01:55 what will sitting on the toilet for 24 hours do to your body?
02:00 But first, if we're going to sit here this long, what would you do?
02:05 Well, you could read a good book, but in 24 hours, you might not be able to finish it.
02:11 With this episode's sponsor, Blinkist,
02:14 you could read over 100 books by the time you're done here.
02:17 Blinkist is a service that condenses the best parts of non-fiction books
02:22 into just 15 minutes for you to read or listen to.
02:25 I know, with all the distractions today,
02:27 it can be hard to sit down and read for a couple of hours.
02:30 I mean, who has time for that anyway?
02:33 But with Blinkist, we here at What If have been able to learn
02:36 a ton of new things in a really short amount of time.
02:40 We obviously really like the science section.
02:42 A book I recently read, and I think you guys will like, is titled Physics of the Future.
02:47 It talks about what future technology will look like, according to top scientists.
02:52 The first 100 people to go to Blinkist.com/WhatIf
02:56 will get unlimited access for one week to try Blinkist.
02:59 And if you want the full membership, you'll also get 25% off.
03:02 So go ahead, go on over guys and sign up.
03:04 It helps the channel out, and there's no risk you can cancel at any time.
03:09 Now let's get back to the video.
03:11 What would happen if you sat on the toilet for 24 hours straight?
03:16 Well, you'll quickly notice that your legs and feet will fall asleep.
03:22 Sitting in this position can put pressure on your nerves and cut off your circulation,
03:26 so your legs will feel tingly and numb.
03:29 Usually, when this happens, you get up and walk around,
03:33 and you feel fine within a couple of minutes.
03:35 But in your case, you're going to be here for a lot longer,
03:38 and sitting this long can cause blood clots.
03:43 These are clumps of blood that can form due to immobilization.
03:47 At times, these can move around your body and get into your heart or lungs,
03:52 and stop your blood from flowing, or prevent you from breathing.
03:56 But just sitting there will be the least of your worries.
04:00 That's because during these 24 hours,
04:02 you'll be going to the washroom for the entire time.
04:07 And you'll be forcing 146 kg (1,000 lb) of feces out of your body.
04:12 Most people don't even weigh that much,
04:14 so doing this to your body would put a ridiculous amount of strain on your colon and your butt.
04:20 You'd get hemorrhoids,
04:22 it's likely that your colon would rupture and could even burst.
04:26 Whether your colon ruptures or bursts,
04:29 feces will then seep into your abdomen.
04:31 Now, all that bacteria that was meant to stay in your colon is loose in your abdomen.
04:38 This would cause a severe infection, and maybe even kill you.
04:42 If you could manage to have a colon made out of reinforced steel,
04:46 you could potentially survive this.
04:48 Sure, your butt would be sore, and you might risk getting a blood clot,
04:52 but the chances of these things being fatal aren't a guarantee.
04:56 But you should also keep in mind that having all these feces inside of you,
05:00 you'll be lugging around 146 kg (1,000 lb) of extra weight.
05:05 Gaining this much weight over the course of one year would cause some serious issues in your body.
05:11 Throughout the year, you'll move slower and slower.
05:14 Your stomach would keep expanding and be bigger than ever.
05:18 And on top of all this,
05:20 you'd be dealing with severe chronic pain.
05:23 So although sitting on a toilet once a year might feel like a way to save time,
05:28 there's just no way your body would be able to handle this.
05:32 What if, instead of sitting on a toilet,
05:35 we sat in a bathtub for up to one week?
05:40 Well, we'll save that story for another WHAT IF.
05:45 (upbeat music)
