Malaysia’s decision to restrict ships from an Israel shipping cargo company sends a clear message of its stand not to recognise Israel as a country, says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister told reporters after an event at the ministry on Tuesday (Dec 20) that the move also showed that Malaysia did not want to assist or play any role in terms of the economy that involved Israel.
To a question, Fahmi said he did not foresee that the government’s latest stand would have an effect on Malaysia's shipping and use of its ports.

00:00 Mr. Lee, can I ask about the ship?
00:03 Yes, the ship.
00:04 Is the government decision not only about the Israeli ship from the Malaysian port,
00:12 but also the ship bound to Israel?
00:14 Yes.
00:15 So will it be treated with contempt or will we lose our core interest in going to the Middle East?
00:23 No, I see this is in line with the government's base
00:28 which gave confirmation about several issues involving Israel.
00:35 I see that there is no one, basically we are consistent
00:42 and our commitment to fight for the fate of the people of Gaza is among the priorities.
00:50 I do not expect this to affect the ship and port usage
01:01 because I expect a lot from the ships.
01:06 I am sorry, I do not have a specific figure,
01:09 how many percent of the companies that are ported to our ports,
01:14 the destination is Israel.
01:16 But I believe the amount is not too large.
01:19 And of course the government will investigate this issue from time to time.
01:25 But what has allowed the ship companies in Israel to start using port facilities in Malaysia,
01:39 this is what we have read in the Prime Minister's statement since 2002.
01:44 And they also started coming in 2005, the Zim company.
01:50 And whatever it is, the government is giving a clear signal
01:56 that we do not recognize the state of Israel
01:59 and we will not be complacent in our efforts,
02:05 including in terms of economic assistance for the state of Israel.
