It's been more than a year in the making and now, finally, hundreds of Top End residents have some respite from the scorching heat with the long-awaited reopening of their pool. The new and improved Palmerston community pool officially opened its doors today just in time for the Christmas holidays.

00:15 So it's good to have it back.
00:26 After sitting closed and under construction for more than a year, the Palmerston Pool
00:30 has had a nearly $20 million revamp to replace its 30-year-old predecessor.
00:35 Tiles falling off the old wall, there was a leak in the main tank, the filtration system
00:40 hadn't been updated in that 30 years.
00:42 The facility was really, really tired.
00:45 There's dedicated play areas for the little ones.
00:47 Good variety for all the kids, like bubs, toddlers, big kids, everything kids.
00:53 For lap swimmers, a new 50-metre pool.
00:56 And for those a little more adventurous, thrills and spills, on the new multi-level aquatic

01:02 Officials say it's all a part of efforts to bring the community together and offer a welcome
01:07 reprieve from the top-end sun.
01:09 It's absolutely essential up here and we know not all households have a pool in their backyard.
01:15 So this is a provision for absolutely everyone to come down and enjoy it.
01:19 The pool will remain free until at least 2026, meaning those from Palmerston, Darwin and
01:25 those travelling through will have access to this space to stay cool during those hot
01:29 territory days.
