00:00 State Labor promised a trial of just 500 poker machines, but when pubs and hotels were invited
00:07 to participate, the Independent Panel on Gaming Reform hit the jackpot with around 6,000 offered
00:13 up.
00:14 There's an understanding within the industry that the community is generally moving to
00:19 cashless anyway.
00:21 About 4,500 machines in 28 venues across the state have been selected for the trial beginning
00:26 early next year.
00:28 Overseeing it is the state's former Liquor, Racing and Gaming Commissioner Michael Foggo.
00:33 As well as a cashless gaming card, smartphone apps will be tested.
00:37 That app will allow you to limit the time on machines, limit the amount of money you
00:42 spend, the days you spend, the hours you spend.
00:45 He says players will be able to choose their limit, but harm reduction advocates want limits
00:50 mandated.
00:51 WESI Mission is advocating for loss limits of $100 a day, $500 a week and $5,000 per
00:59 year.
01:00 Trials have already been completed at two venues, including Club York in Sydney's CBD.
01:04 They've been testing the technology itself, whereas the upcoming trial will look at the
01:09 effects on human behaviour.
01:11 If the normal spend on a poker machine is X, when it goes cashless, what's the effect
01:18 on that?
01:19 The mandatory cashless gaming card was recommended last year by the state's crime commission
01:24 to curb money laundering.
01:26 This government has to move quickly on a cashless gaming system.
01:30 The panel has been given until next November to report its findings to the government.
